1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems
The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.
The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.
According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.
At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.
In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

Common 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems
The 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse is known for several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and maintenance.
- Transmission Failure: One of the most significant issues with the 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse is transmission failure, which can occur even in low-mileage examples. The primary cause of this issue is the wave caution spring in the transmission, which can fail and cause small particles to circulate throughout the system, leading to heavy damage . If the transmission fails, it will need to be replaced or rebuilt, which can be a costly repair.
- Oil and Leaks: The 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse is prone to oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover. If the valve cover cracks, it can cause oil to leak, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. Additionally, if the oil cap has a milky foamy substance on it, it could be a sign of a blown head gasket, which can cause coolant to mix with the oil, leading to engine damage .
- Maintenance: Many of the issues with the 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse are related to maintenance. The car's age and the tendency of some owners to modify the car without proper maintenance can lead to a range of problems. Regular maintenance, including replacing all the oils, fluids, and vacuum lines, is essential to keep the car running correctly .
- Comfort and Performance: Some owners have reported issues with the car's comfort and performance, including a rough ride due to the stock suspension system and poor electronic system performance.
In summary, the 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse is prone to engine problems, transmission failure, oil leaks, and maintenance issues. Proper maintenance and regular inspections can help prevent many of these problems, but some issues, such as transmission failure, can be costly to repair.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-09-06
- VIN: 4A3AK44Y9WE
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: ON 9/6/2010 I GOT IN MY CAR AND PULLED OUT OF MY PARKING SPACE. MY CAR HAD BEEN SITTING ALL THAT DAY AND THE PREVIOUS DAY. AS I PULLED OUT, HEARD A FLOP, FLOP NOISE, STOPPED MY CAR, GOT OUT AND LOOKED AROUND. THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE, A UNIROYAL LONG TOURING A/S, HAD COMPLETELY BLOWN OUT (NOT JUST GONE FLAT). I REPLACED THE TIRE WITH MY SPARE. I LOOKED OVER THE BLOWN TIRE AND FOUND A TEAR APPROX. 1-2 INCHES LONG ON THE INSIDE OF THE TIRE, JUST BELOW THE TREAD. MY FATHER CONTACTED THE TIRE MANUFACTURER, BECAUSE MY SISTER HAD THE SAME MODEL TIRE AND HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WEEKS EARLIER. MY FATHER WAS TOLD WE COULD GET REIMBURSED FOR NEW TIRES IF THEY WERE INSPECTED BY THE DEALER AND FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE. TODAY, 9/8/2010, I TOOK MY CAR TO A TIRE DEALERSHIP AND GOT THE ONE TIRE REPLACED. THE BLOWN TIRE WAS FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE. AN INDIVIDUAL FROM THAT DEALERSHIP CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER & WAS TOLD TO FILL OUT A CLAIM FORM SO I COULD BE REIMBURSED 60% OF THE NEW TIRE COST. THE DEALER KEPT MY BLOWN TIRE. I CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER ABOUT GETTING ALL NEW TIRES, BECAUSE THE OTHERS WERE FOUND TO BE DEFECTIVE WITH CRACKS BEGINNING. THEY SAID THE TIRE I JUST PAID FOR COULD NOT BE COVERED BECAUSE IT WAS NOT AN ACCEPTED BRAND, BUT FOUR NEW TIRES THAT WERE OF AN ACCEPTED BRAND COULD BE COVERED UP TO 60%. THE TIRES HAVE ALL BEEN SAID TO BE DEFECTIVE BY THE DEALERSHIP, HOWEVER THE MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO COVER THE FULL COST OF REPLACEMENT TIRES. *TR
STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-02-06
- Components: STRUCTURE,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: I PURCHASED MY 1998 ECLIPSE GS IN 2003 WITH APPROX. 38,000 MILES ON IT. WITHIN 2 MONTHS, MY DRIVER'S DOOR HANDLE BROKE WHEN OPENING THE DOOR. THIS OCCURRED ON A DAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER. NOT THINKING MUCH ABOUT IT, I HAD IT REPLACED AT A COST OF ALMOST $300.00 (PARTS, LABOR, & PAINT) IT HAPPENED AGAIN WITHIN 3 MONTHS. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THIS ONE ALSO AND ONLY CHARGED ME FOR THE PART, A MERE $175.00. ABOUT 6 MONTHS LATER, MY GIRLFRIEND AT THE TIME WAS OPENING THE PASSENGER DOOR AND THAT HANDLE BROKE OFF. THIS MAKES 3 BROKEN DOOR HANDLES IN 11 MONTHS. I MIGHT BE A STRONG GUY, I GUESS, BUT MY GIRLFRIEND WAS 5'1" AND ABOUT 90 LBS.. THE KIND OF GIRL WHO HAD TROUBLE TEARING NOTEBOOK PAPER. WELL, WHILE WAITING FOR THE DEALERSHIP TO ORDER A REPLACEMENT HANDLE, MY BROTHER WAS GETTING INTO THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF MY CAR TO INSTALL A NEW STEREO AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE HANDLE SNAPS OFF IN HIS HAND. I HAD TO LEAVE A WINDOW DOWN FOR A WEEK INORDER TO GET IN AND OUT OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE SINCE STOPPED ORDERING FROM THE DEALERSHIP AS A FIBERGLASS DOOR HANDLE WAS AVAILABLE ONLINE FOR $35.00 AND CAME BLACK IN COLOR. TO DATE, AS OF 2010, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE DRIVER'S DOOR HANDLE 6 TIMES AND THE PASSENGER SIDE TWICE. AFTER SPEAKING WIT QUITE A FEW MITSUBISHI ENTHUSIASTS, I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM MITSUBISHI KNOWS ABOUT, ALWAYS KNEW ABOUT, AND HAS SIMPLY REFUSED TO FIX, EVEN AS FAR AS NOT MAKING REPLACEMENT DOOR HANDLES OUT OF STRONGER MATERIAL. I WILL NEVER BUY A MITSUBISHI AGAIN BASED ON THIS SIMPLE DESIGN FLAW WHICH THE COMPANY DEEMS IS BENEATH THEM TO MAKE RIGHT. *TR

- Summary: BOTH MY HANDLES BROKE OFF, THE DRIVERS SIDE ARM REST,( WHERE THE BUTTONS FOR THE WINDOWS ARE), FELL OFF AND INTO THE CAVITY BELOW. THE CONVERTIBLE TOP LEAKS BADLY ALONG THE POINT WHERE THE TOP MEETS THE CAR WINDSHIELD,WINDOWS,AND BACK WINDOW. VERY UPSET THAT THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WITH SAME PROBLEM YET NO ONE WANTS TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE...MITSUBISHI SHOULD PAY FOR REPAIRS... *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-05-01
- VIN: 4A3AX35G2WE
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: CONVERTIBLE ROOF DOES NOT FOLD DOWN DUE TO BENT FRAME MEMBERS ON EACH SIDE - CALLED "BENT TOP STACK CONTROL LINKS". THIS PREVENTS THE TOP FRONT BOW FROM CLOSING TIGHTLY AND ALLOWS WATER TO ENTER THE CAB CAUSING ADDITIONAL DAMAGE FROM MOLD AND MILDEW - HEALTH HAZARDS. THE HEAD LINER PULLS 1-1/2" FROM THE FRONT BOW AND SAGS SIGNIFICANTLY DUE TO THE SLACK DISTORTING THE VIEW FORWARD AND LIMITS THE VIEW IN THE MIRROR - A DEFINITE SAFETY ISSUE. THE REPAIR SHOULD BE A FACTORY ISSUE AND NOT COST ME MORE THAN $500 FOR THE PARTS AND LABOR. IF THIS BAR BREAKS IT WILL FURTHER DAMAGE THE RAG TOP AND QUADRUPLE THE REPAIR COST. THE REPAIR SHOP SAID THIS HAS BEEN A PROBLEM WITH MANY MITZU ECCLIPSE SPYDERS SINCE THEY WERE INTRODUCED. RECALL - RECALL - RECALL. THANKS *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-05-15
- VIN: 4A3AK44Y8WE
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: AROUND 50,000 MILES ABOUT 2001 MY SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND GO OFF. I CALL DEALERSHIP AND BECAUSE I COULDN'T BE SEEN NO EARLIER THAN 2 WEEKS AHEAD OF TIME I WAS UNABLE TO GET A CONVENIENT APPT. I DIDN'T GET THE VEHICLE IN THE SHOP UNTIL MUCH LATER. WHEN THE LIGHT STARTED STAYING ON STEADY AROUND 81,000 I TOOK IT IN. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP AND THEY CHARGED ME OVER $200 TO TELL ME MY COMPUTER WAS NO GOOD AND A NEW ONE WOULD COST $1100 AND MY WARRANTY ON THE COMPUTER WENT OUT AT 80,000. I LET SOME TIME GO BY AND PURCHASED A COMPUTER FROM THE JUNKYARD. I THEN FOUND A PLACE THAT REBUILT COMPUTERS. I SENT MY ORIGINAL COMPUTER AWAY. I LATER GOT A PHONE CALL WITH THE PLACE TELLING ME THAT MY COMPUTER HAD BEEN RECALLED SO I CALLED MITSUBISHI. THEY TOLD ME THERE HAD NOT BEEN A RECALL SO I CALLED THE PLACE BACK. THE GUY EXPLAINED THAT MY COMPUTER HAD THE SAME ISSUE AS MANY OTHERS LIKE MINE HAD AND THAT MITSUIBISHI DID NOT RECALL THEM BUT STOP MAKING THAT TYPE OF COMPUTER. HE DID TELL ME THEY MADE A NEW ONE AND IF I COULD FIND OUT WHAT THEY WENT OVER TO HE COULD FIND ME ONE. WHEN I CALLED MITS BACK AND EXPLAINED THEY TOLD ME THAT THE DEALERSHIP COULD HAVE OVER RIDDEN THE 81,00 MILES SINCE IT WAS SO CLOSE TO THE 80,000 AND IF I WENT BACK THERE I COULD SEE IF THEY WOULD DO IT. WELL I CALLED BACK AND SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER. HE WANTED ME TO DO ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC TEST WHICH I AM TRYING TO EXPLAIN THAT WOULD NOT BENEFIT ME. I WOULD BE PAYING ANOTHER $200 PLUS DOLLARS TO BE TOLD THE SAME THING THAT THEY HAD ALREADY TOLD ME OR TOLD SOMETHING DIFFERENT WHICH MEANS I HAVE WASTED MY FIRST $200 PLUS DOLLARS. I GAVE UP AND HAVE BEEN REPLACING EVERYTHING ON THE CAR TO GET IT FIXED. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO USE THE JUNKYARD COMPUTER CAUSE MY ORIGINAL ONE HAD BLOWN UP AND IT HAS BEEN AN ISSUE EVERY SINCE. MY SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT STAYS ON NOW AND IT IS MISSING BADLY. I HAVE CHANGED THE OXYGEN SENSORS 3 TIMES. *TR

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-02-27
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: I PURCHASED MY CAR NEW IN FEBRUARY 1998. AFTER 9 YEARS I ONLY HAVE 43,000 MILES ON THE CAR. I LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SO THERE IS NO EXTREME TEMPERATURE CHANGES WHICH MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THE DOOR HANDLE TO BE COMPROMISED, NOR ABUSE AS I SEE OTHERS ARE BEING TOLD BY SERVICE SHOPS. I DID NOT EXPECT TO OPEN MY DRIVERS SIDE CAR DOOR LAST WEEK AND HAVE IT COME OFF IN MY HAND. THE REASON I BOUGHT THIS CAR WAS THAT A FRIEND HAD JUST BOUGHT ONE FOR HIMSELF THE MONTH BEFORE I DID. I WAS VISITING HIM YESTERDAY AND ASKED HIM TO GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TO MY CAR AND HE BEAT ME TO IT. HIS DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR HANDLE HAD COME OFF IN HIS HAND 2 WEEKS AGO. I WAS FIRST CHECKING FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL BEFORE BRINGING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP. RIGHT NOW, I HAVE TO CLIMB THROUGH FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE TO POP OPEN MY DOOR OR LEAVE THE WINDOW DOWN WHEN RUNNING ERRANDS. I THINK THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS SEEMS TO WARRANT SOME SORT OF A RESPONSE TO THIS FROM MITSUBISHI. *JB

- Date Of Incident: 2006-04-01
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I BOUGHT MY 98 ECLIPSE, STANDARD, IN 2003, NOT EVEN A YEAR AFTER I HAD IT IT DIED ON ME ON THE FREEWAY ONE DAY. TURNED OUT IT WAS THE SPEED SENSOR THAT GOT ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE. ABOUT ANOTHER 6 MONTHS LATER THE FOUND AN OIL LEAK ON THE HEAD GASKET THAT WAS MAKING ME MISFIRE, THAT WAS FIXED. THE CAR WAS FINE UNTIL ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO WHEN THE ENGINE WENT OUT ON ME BECAUSE APPARENTLY THE ENGINE OIL AND COOLANT WERE SOMEHOW MIXING, MY HOSES WERE OUT, SO WAS MY WATER PUMP, O2 SENSOR AND FUEL PUMP SENSOR, ALL AT THE SAME TIME. WELL I HAD MAJOR WORK DONE EVERYTHING WAS PUT IN NEW, ABOUT A MONTH LATER MY DRIVER DOOR HANDLE FALLS OFF, THAT COST ME 150 DOLLARS! ONE MONTH AFTER THAT, NOW, MY SPEEDOMETER STOPS WORKING ALL OF A SUDDEN AND 2 WEEKS LATER MY TRANSMISSION GOES OUT. ALSO MY CLUTCH IS GOING OUT. SO NOW I CANT DRIVE THE CAR ANY HIGHER THAN 5TH GEAR BECAUSE IT THROWS MY GEAR OUT!!! SINCE I STILL OWE 6K ON THE CAR I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO FIX IT. WHICH IS GOING TO END UP COSTING ME, IN ALL I'VE SPENT AND AM ABOUT TO SPEND, AS MUCH AS I STILL OWE ON THE CAR! *NM

HE HAD A MITSUBISHI SPECIALIST TO LOOK AT THE PROBLEM AND HE SAID THE SPECIALIST ADMITTED THAT THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THE CRANK PULLEY BOLT BRAKING. THAT THE ONLY WAY, AND LEAST EXPENSIVE WAY, TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM IS TO REPLACE THE MOTOR WHICH IS CHEAPER THAN REPLACING THE CRANK SHAFT. *JB

This car is amazing! It's very fast and responsive, and it grips the road phenomenally. Thanks to its AWD, it turns like it's on a rail. It's also excellent in the snow. I compared it to a WRX with high expectations, but this car has indistinguishable performance, plus leather, a sunroof, and good looks. I've had almost no repairs in the 5+ years I've owned it, making it the best car I've ever owned, and I've owned some great Euro sports sedans.

You have a good, reliable car! Just remember to keep up with regular oil changes. As it gets older, you may find that the spark plugs need to be replaced more frequently. Additionally, the turning angle may not be as good as it once was.

I've had my maroon Eclipse GS for almost a year and it's been a great car for me as a college student. Although I've had a few minor issues, such as the check engine light coming on due to recalled spark plugs, and the door handle breaking off which was a bit pricey to fix, overall it's been a reliable car. It's perfect for city driving and has some pep on the highway. The only thing I wish it had was a little more horsepower and a larger engine, preferably a V6.

This car is amazing! It gets outstanding mpg (miles per gallon) for its year and Mitsubishi put in the AWD 5spd turbo engine which lets the car punish the pavement. Plus, because it's an AWD car, it's much easier to drive during winter time because it gets better traction when all the wheels move instead of just two. This car is reliable, fast, sharp-looking, and fuel-efficient. It has everything a consumer could want and need!

This car has been fantastic, with only minor wear and tear (brakes x1 each and new clutch at 100k). I bought it new and have taken great care of it, using only Mobil 1 and driving it with enthusiasm! It's still quick and fun, and I can't help but smile every time I see it. I've used it to haul everything from firewood to bookshelves to 2 mountain bikes, and it's taken me all over the country, from Austin to Santa Fe, Big Bend, and New Orleans. While there have been a few issues with the locking trunk release and the high lift over hatch, overall it's a fantastic car that can easily compare to my Acuras. I'm pretty hard on my cars, but this one has held up remarkably well!

This car has required a significant amount of repairs in the past two years. Despite spending $4000 on repairs, it continues to experience issues that require frequent visits to the shop. As a result, I have lost confidence in Mitsubishi and will not consider purchasing another vehicle from them.

Great handling car! It gets 23-26 city and 35 hwy mpg with the 4 cyl. The acceleration is decent for getting on the highway. However, the motor needed a new head gasket and milling at 81k miles, which is too early in my opinion.

I've owned this car for less than a year, and I must say, it's my favourite car so far, even after owning several imports. I've just started on some minor race modifications to get it ready for SCCA Autocross next summer. Although the motor is a bit challenging to get out through the top, everything else has been fun to work on. The interior strips out with so much ease, and the exhaust is easy to replace. Some people say that this car isn't fast without a turbo, but if you don't mind having a less comfortable street car, you can strip the interior, drop the power steering and a/c, add an intake, lower the car by about two inches, add strut bars, and total straight pipe, which will help greatly (although it may sound and look like crap after all this, it runs great).

I had a disappointing experience with my Mitsubishi car. It broke down frequently and I would not consider purchasing another one. Additionally, I know of two other individuals who had similar issues with their Mitsubishi cars. However, I appreciate the compact size of the car, which made it easier to move to the side of the road when necessary.

This car has only 78000 miles and has been well-maintained. Although I recently had to pay $2000 for head gasket and valve repair, the shop informed me that this is a known issue with Mitsubishi due to a design flaw.
