2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.

The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.

According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.

In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-11-15
  • VIN: 4A3AK24F88E
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY 2008 ECLIPSE HAD AN OPEN RECALL ON ISSUES WITH ABS FOR OVER A YEAR. AFTER A YEAR I WAS FINALLY NOTIFIED THAT THE PARTS WERE AVAILABLE TO FIX THE ISSUE. AFTER MUCH HASSLE DEALING WITH THE LOCAL DEAL I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR REPAIR. THE SERVICE CENTER CLAIMED TO HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER NOW MY CAR IS NO LEAKING BRAKE FLUID FROM THE ABS. I CONTACTED CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD I NEED TO TAKE THE CAR TO A SERVICE CENTER TO BE LOOKED AT. NORMALLY NO ISSUE THAT THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP RECENTLY CLOSED AND THE NEXT CLOSEST ONE IS OVER 100 MILES AWAY. AS MY CAR IS LEAKING BRAKE FLUID IT HAS BEEN DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A SERVICE CENTER TO BE LOOKED AT BUT THEY WOULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT IT WOULD BE FIXED. AS THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH ABS SYSTEM AND AN OPEN RECALL THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. CUSTOMER SERVICE TOLD ME IT WAS NOT THEIR CONCERN ON GETTING THE CAR TO BE FIXED AND IT DID NOT MATTER THAT THERE WERE NO SERVICE CENTERS WHERE I LIVED. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT THEIR PROBLEM. AS THIS PRODUCT IS MANUFACTURED BY THEM AND HAS THEIR NAME I FIND THIS TOTALLY LAUGHABLE. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THIS COMPANY HAS NO CONCERNS FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS AND HAS NO INTENTION OF FIXING AN KNOW ISSUE AS IT IS AN OPEN RECALL.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-02-04
  • VIN: 4A3AK24F18E
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE '08 DURING THE YEAR 2015, I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY BRAKES WHEN I DRIVE OVER BUMPS QUICKLY OR HIT A DIP IN THE ROAD. EACH TIME THIS HAPPENS, MY BRAKES PRACTICALLY LOSE ALL PRESSURE. I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PUMP MY BRAKES A NUMBER OF TIMES TO GET THE PRESSURE BACK UP. I HAVE BROUGHT MY VEHICLE THREE TIMES TO A PRIVATE BRAKE COMPANY AND HAD MY BRAKE SYSTEM INSPECTED AND BRAKE PADS REPLACED FIRST AND LATER HAD THE BRAKE SYSTEM INSPECTED IN THE LATTER VISITS. WHEN I STILL CONTINUED TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM, I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE DEFINITELY HAS BEEN A RECALL ON THE MITSUBISHI ECLIPSES. THEY TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WITH MY BRAKES WAS BECAUSE THERE WAS A FLUID LEAK FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER. I PAID OUT OF MY OWN POCKET TO HAVE WHATEVER NEEDED FIXED IN MY BRAKING SYSTEM FIXED BY THEM IN OCTOBER 2015. APPROXIMATELY LESS THAN FOUR MONTHS LATER, I WAS ON THE FREEWAY (AND OF COURSE PEOPLE DRIVE FAST AND THERE WERE CARS ALL AROUND ME), I HIT A DIP IN THE ROAD AND MY BRAKES ALMOST WENT OUT. IT SCARED ME SO BAD! I HAD TO PULL OVER THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND PUMP MY BRAKES AGAIN TO GET THE PRESSURE BACK UP. I HAVE OWN OTHER VEHICLES FOR YEARS AND NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE UNTIL I OWNED THIS PARTICULAR TYPE VEHICLE. SO WHATEVER THEY FIXED DID NOT WORK BECAUSE I SHOULD NOT HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AFTER THE DEALERSHIP 'SUPPOSEDLY' FIXED IT WITH NEW PARTS. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP IN FEBRUARY 2016 AND THEY STATED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY BRAKE SYSTEM AND REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT IT. I DRIVE THIS VEHICLE EVERYDAY SO I KNOW WHEN SOMETHING 'JUST DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT'. I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT OR DIED BECAUSE I COULD NOT STOP MY VEHICLE AND THIS NEEDS TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY BEFOREHAND NOT AFTER MYSELF OR SOME ELSE DIES.

2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

2015-06-02
  • Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Eclipse vehicles manufactured April 20, 2005, to February 13, 2009, and 2007-2009 Eclipse Spyder vehicles manufactured December 23, 2005, to February 13, 2009. Due to corrosion inside the antil-lock brake system (ABS) unit, one or more of the internal valves may seize. In a braking event that uses the ABS, a seized valve would increase brake pedal travel and reduce braking ability.
  • Consequence: A sudden reduction of braking performance may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, flush and clean the ABS hydraulic unit using high grade brake fluid, free of charge. If the inspection shows that the valves may seize, the ABS unit will be replaced. The recall began on July 21, 2015. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-15-004.

Negative 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse car reviews

  1. Oren Veum 2024-11-29

This car was designed with more emphasis on aesthetics than practicality. It has a weight of over 3500 lb, which is quite heavy for a sport coupe, and a turning circle of 40 ft, which is comparable to that of an SUV. Additionally, it has several blind spots due to its wide pillars and small side windows, as well as small side mirrors. Maneuvering this car in tight spaces may prove challenging. The car also exhibits noticeable understeer. The interior, even with the leather option, features cheap-looking materials, such as plastic on the door handle and middle dash, which detract from the overall experience. The rear seat is primarily intended for storage. A redesign may be necessary.

  2. Arno Funk 2024-06-26

Had the car since Feb 08 and finding too many little things that bother me every time I drive it! Should have rented one first for a week before purchase.

  3. Deon Kertzmann 2024-01-19

Overall, I'm really pleased with this vehicle. While the interior could use a bit of sprucing up, it's generally fine. I particularly love the blue dash at night. The only real downside is that, for a small car, it's quite heavy and has a turning radius more akin to a Super Duty Pickup. So, be sure to give yourself plenty of room when trying to fit into a parking space!

Positive 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse car reviews

  1. Wellington Fisher 2024-11-18

I purchased my GT-SE two years ago with less than 40k miles on it for less than $9,000. I think it's a great deal for a car that originally sold for 30k. Currently, it has 57k miles on it. The power and torque are great. I drive it hard and use that 263 HP and 260lbs of torque. When the MIVEC opens up those exhaust valves at around 3500 RPM, you can definitely feel and hear it, especially with my K&N short ram intake. Lowering it with springs or coil overs really helps with the looks and handling. Adding a stiffer rear sway bar also helps with the understeer. The turning radius is not great, though. The factory Rockford Fosgate stereo is a great feature to have. The rear wing makes seeing clearly out of the rear window impossible, but in my opinion, the Eclipse looks terrible without it. For most of my ownership, I have a recurring check engine light for a bad O2 sensor or catalytic converter, but I put a new sensor in every year before inspection, and it keeps the light off long enough to pass. Performance isn't affected by whatever the problem is thus far. In mixed driving, I get 23 MPG, which is not great considering you need premium fuel in the V6. But the performance is good enough for me to ignore the fuel cost. If these cars were 500 pounds lighter, they would be incredible. The driver and passenger seats are very roomy, but the rear seats are useless for anyone over 5'3. These cars are known to have a rattle coming from the clutch. Mine started doing it at around 50k miles. My mechanic told me to let it go. From what I read, it's clutch disk springs? The noise goes away when the pedal is depressed. It doesn't affect shifting as of yet. I know it may sound like there are a lot of drawbacks to these cars, but I think it's fun enough to drive that I ignore the not-so-good stuff. I highly recommend buying one. And this is coming from someone who's owned a 2008 Mustang Shelby GT and a 2010 Corvette. I truly enjoy my Eclipse almost as much as those cars.

I love Eclipses! I used to have a '96, and recently an '08 Versa (which was a bit dull). I just got this 2008 Eclipse GS in Rave Red (such a beautiful color!). What a difference between the Versa and this car. This car makes driving a thrill again! I absolutely love it!

You've done your research and looked at many competitors in this price range, including Sky, GTI, Speed3, M-X5, and more. While they were all nice cars, they seemed to be designed for people who are 5'4 and weigh 98 pounds. As someone who is 6'1

I used to own a 98' Eclipse GS which lasted for 11 years. Recently, I decided to trade it in for an 08 model and I must say, I couldn't be happier with my decision. The car is stylish and affordable, and in my opinion, it has great gas mileage. It also provides a smooth ride, and I have even pushed it to its max speed of 155 mph on the interstate, and it still felt smooth. The only downside is that it's quite heavy for a sports car, weighing in at 3550 lbs, which can make cornering a bit difficult on the tires unless you take them extremely slow. However, I'm used to this issue as my previous Eclipse had the same problem. Overall, I absolutely love my car, and it never fails to attract attention.

I needed a reliable and fuel-efficient vehicle, and the Eclipse caught my eye! This car drives incredibly smoothly and has impressive acceleration for a 4-cylinder. I opted for the SE edition, which includes a sunroof and an amazing Rock Ford Fosgate sound system complete with a subwoofer in the trunk. The front and rear spoilers add a sharp touch to the car's appearance. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase and can already see a significant improvement from my previous truck. :)
