Mitsubishi Eclipse 2000 problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.

The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.

According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.

At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.

In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

  • Transmission Issues
Transmission problems are also prevalent in the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse, with some owners reporting that their cars lose all gears in the automatic transmission, even after changing the filter and fluid.
  • Electrical Issues
Electrical problems are another common issue in the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Some owners have reported issues with the headlights, such as them only partially working or not working at all.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-07-31
  • VIN: 4A3AC84LXYE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I AM THE TECHNICIAN WHO REPAIRED THIS DEFECT. THE VEHICLE WAS A NO START, NO CRANK COMPLAINT. ALSO VEHICLE HAD NO DASH OR ACCESSORY POWER. THE MAIN IGNITION FEED FROM THE UNDERHOOD FUSEBOX HAD NO POWER AT THE IGNITION SWITCH & TESTING PROVED IT WAS SHORTED TO GROUND. THERE WERE ALSO SEVERAL OTHER COMPONENTS WITH NO POWER SUCH AS PIN 16 AT DLC, STARTER & ANTI-THEFT RELAYS. THESE CIRCUITS ARE HOT AT ALL TIMES. AFTER EXTENSIVE TROUBLESHOOTING I FOUND A SEVERELY BURNED AND SHORTED WIRE HARNESS THAT RUBBED THROUGH THE INSULATION FROM CONTACTING THE SHARP EDGES OF THE FENDER SHEET METAL. THIS HARNESS RUNS FROM THE UNDER HOOD FUSEBOX THROUGH THE FENDER WELL TO THE JUNCTION BLOCK UNDER THE DASH. THERE WERE NO BLOWN FUSES FOUND AS A RESULT OF THIS WHICH IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL WITH THE AMOUNT OF CURRENT ON THESE CIRCUITS. THE FIX WAS TO SPLICE/REPAIR THE DAMAGED HARNESS AND RELOCATE THE HARNESS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE FROM THE FENDER SHEET METAL. THIS IS A HUGE FIRE HAZARD. *TR

Negative Mitsubishi Eclipse 2000 car reviews

  1. Pedro Pacocha 2024-11-08

My 2000 Eclipse has had a history of transmission and sunroof issues. The transmission was rebuilt at 30,000 miles and is now giving me trouble again at 65,000 miles. The sunroof has also never worked properly, and I had to bring it in for repairs nine times during the first two years under warranty. Despite my complaints to Mitsubishi, the car continued to have issues and the dealer even threatened to refuse service if I continued to complain. However, I can confidently say that my experience with this Mitsubishi has been disappointing and I cannot recommend it to others.

This car has had major clutch and transmission issues since the day I bought it new. The brakes have gone out twice, and the gearbox has been rebuilt, yet it still shifts very hard. Despite these issues, the dealer service has been unable to find any problems. Additionally, I have had to spend $2K on rust repair for a car that is less than 2 years old. However, I still appreciate the design of the car and believe it has the potential to be a lot of fun.

Hi there! It sounds like you've had a bit of a rough time with your car. It's a shame that it hasn't lived up to your expectations. I hope you don't mind me saying, but it's always a good idea to do some research before making a big purchase like a car. That way, you can be sure you're getting something that's right for you. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I had a really bad experience with my Mitsubishi car, and unfortunately, I won't be buying another one. The car had several issues, such as the passenger seat not locking into place, the buttons falling off the dashboard and sunroof controls, and the plastic cover over the back seat falling off. Additionally, the car always sounded like it had a hole in the muffler and had a slight antifreeze smell. The glove box wouldn't stay closed, and the car was too cramped inside. Even school buses have a better turning radius! Unfortunately, I had to terminate my lease 6 months early because I couldn't take it anymore.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for 2 years now and it's been mostly great. However, after a year, I started experiencing some air conditioning issues - it was leaking onto the floorboard. Additionally, the clutch and gear shifter have been a bit sticky. While it's still fun to drive, these issues have been a bit of a hassle.

Positive Mitsubishi Eclipse 2000 car reviews

I'm so glad to hear about your positive experience with your 2000 Eclipse GT! It sounds like you made a great choice with the silver bullet. From the moment you sat in the driver's seat, you knew it was the car for you, and it's great to hear that it has lived up to your expectations. It's impressive that you've reached 127,000 miles with very little unexpected work. Although you've had to do the typical routine stuff, such as timing belts, tires, and accessory belts, it's great to hear that your original clutch is still going strong. The only unexpected repair you've had was a bad fuel pump, which is amazing considering the mileage you've put on the car. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

It sounds like you have a great car! I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues with it and that it gets you where you want to go in style.

  3. Reginald Morar 2024-09-18

What an incredible vehicle! I'm amazed that you've had no problems with it even after 60k+ miles. The power is great and it handles like a dream. The ride is incredibly smooth and the fuel/mileage is just fantastic. It definitely blows the Cougar and Celica out of the water - they're not even in the same class!

  4. Jillian Dibbert 2024-09-03

This car is awesome! The new body style is great. Don't hold it against the car that it's a V4, it's quick, peppy, and fun to drive. Whenever you're ready to go somewhere, you get a rush of excitement! If you're looking for a reliable and fast sport compact import, this is the way to go! There's also a wide range of after-market parts available for those street racers out there!

  5. Domenico Krajcik 2024-08-29

I purchased this car brand new back in 2000. Overall, I think it's a great car, especially considering the price. I've driven almost 60k miles and haven't had a single issue yet. I was particularly impressed when I hit a curb hard and one of my tires took the brunt of the impact, but the alignment remained rock solid. The only minor issue I've had is with the stereo display, which sometimes goes blank. However, a quick on/off cycle usually fixes the problem. Another thing to note is that when the hatchback opens and there's water on it, the water tends to get into the trunk. Lastly, I highly recommend getting the aluminum gas cap - it's worth the investment.
