1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems
The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a sport compact car that was produced by Mitsubishi in four generations from 1989 until 2011. A convertible body style was added during the 1996 model year.
The first two generations share the automobile platform and parts with the rebadged Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser captive imports. They were built during Mitsubishi Motors' close relationship with Chrysler Corporation. Their partnership was known as Diamond-Star Motors (DSM). In Japan, the first two generations were sold at a specific Japanese retail chain called Mitsubishi Car Plaza. The third, 2000–2005 generation shared a redesigned platform with the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Stratus. In May 2005, the fourth, and final generation Eclipse was introduced, replacing the Chrysler platform used for the third generation with the PS platform.
According to Mitsubishi Motors, the Eclipse was named after an unbeaten 18th-century English racehorse that won 18 races in a row and then retired.
At the end of August 2011, the final Eclipse was manufactured and subsequently auctioned for charity.
In 2017, Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name on a compact crossover vehicle, called the Eclipse Cross.

Common 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse problems
Based on search results, here are the common problems with the Mitsubishi Eclipse 1990:
- Clutch Problems: The 1995 to 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse models are known to have clutch problems. Some RepairPal users have noticed rattle noises when the car is idle. This may indicate a bad clutch pressure plate. When you press down on the clutch pedal, you should hear a creaking noise if the pressure plate is in bad condition. Otherwise, you may need to check the spring alignment in your clutch disc for wear.
- Oil and Leaks: Check the bottom of the oil cap for a milky foamy substance on it. This could be a sign of a blown head gasket, where the seal separating the cylinder head and the engine block might have failed, causing a coolant leak as a result, the coolant gets mixed with the oil causing it to have that milky foamy tan color. Also, check for oil leaks because the 2g eclipse is an old car, a common area where you might find an oil leak on an eclipse is on the valve cover .
- Difficulty Shifting in Manual Transmission: The main culprit of difficult shifting in a manual transmission is the binding of the synchronizer gear to the gear surface. The spline and grooves on the main shaft of the synchronizer assembly may develop burrs that cause difficult shifting. You can try adding a special friction modifier to the manual transmission fluid. If that doesn’t fix the problem, you may need to install a revised synchronizer kit .
- Faulty Brake System: The Mitsubishi Eclipse has its share of problems, including issues with the manual transmission, a faulty brake system, and weak wheels prone to bending.
These common problems need to be addressed before you can start enjoying your Mitsubishi Eclipse. It's crucial to have a mechanic inspect the car before purchasing it to ensure that these issues are fixed or at least known to the buyer.

It's great to hear about your experience with your 1990 Eclipse Turbo! From mid-1990 to the end of 1998, you logged a bit over 46,000 miles in this little rocket and enjoyed the heck out of it. It's understandable that you sold it only because you'd heard that the turbo engines were developing problems after 50-60,000 miles, and your wife didn't like driving it once the roads started filling up with huge SUVs. In retrospect, you wish you'd kept it a couple of years longer. It's interesting to note that the torque steer when you accelerate is noticeable, but manageable. Overall, it sounds like you got a lot of car for the money!
-
Your previous car sounds like it was a real gem! Even though it needed some work, it was dependable and got you where you needed to go. It's great that you were able to find a friend who sold it to you for such a great price. It's clear that you have a real love for this car, even though it may not look like much. It's wonderful that it has never let you down and is always ready to go for a drive!
-
I love this car! When I was 16 back in 1990, I begged my parents for it and they surprised me with it. Since then, I've cherished it. Although I shorted out the electrical system a few years back by adding a giant stereo with a custom boom box, I'm eager to get it fixed so that my kids can drive it when they turn 16. It's the ultimate shifting car and it goes extremely fast. I did get a lot of speeding tickets in this car, even though it's not turbocharged. One time, I was caught going 123 on the lonely stretch of highway from Vegas to Mexico. It's fast!
-
I can tell you, I really like it. I hate to sell it. I love my 1st gen eclise.
-
I can tell you really love your 1st gen Eclipse! It's understandable that you don't want to sell it.

I purchased this car back in 2001 with 120k miles and recently sold it with 122k miles. It was a reliable car and I didn't have to spend any money on it until the ECU (CPU) stopped working. Although the mechanic made it seem like a big deal, I was able to find a solution through www.ecutogo.com here in Houston. They sell rebuilt ECUs that are easy to install yourself. This is a common issue with almost every Eclipse, but it was a fairly easy problem to fix. The only other minor issue I had was with the lift arms on the hatch, but it was not a big deal. You can easily purchase a new pair at Autozone and even install them yourself, although it can be a bit tricky. Overall, the car runs well and is very reliable, never failing on you.
