2005 Jeep Liberty problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.

Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.

The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

This problem has caused difficulties in operating windows and has required multiple replacements of the regulator, with some owners still experiencing issues despite replacements.
  • Fuel Tank and Brake Lock-Up: Problems related to a faulty fuel filler neck causing the gas tank to overflow have been reported. This issue has led to tanks filling up before the pump shuts off, resulting in gas splattering on the vehicle's exterior.

These common problems with the 2005 Jeep Liberty highlight various issues that owners have faced, ranging from suspension and transmission issues to electrical system malfunctions and window regulator failures. • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1J4GL48K35W
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: About 6 months ago the passenger side front end to hit the ground, just after going 60 miles an hour thankfully turning in daughter's driveway. Lower ball joint passenger side came apart. On Monday doing 35 mph the driver side hits the pavement hard! Luckily I ditched in a driveway on the left! The tire slammed into the fender well breaking the plastic there and the piece that goes back under the doors? Ball joint broke completely into? I'm on my third day of working in the rain alongside a road repairing this?

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-04
  • VIN: 1J4GL58KX5W
  • Components: SEATS

When the driver stopped to inspect, the back of the seat had burned through the lumbar support pillow. The seat is severely charred and damaged through the inner foam layer of the seat. The seat will need to be replaced. The driver could have been seriously injured if the seat had caught fire. Jeep was notified, but expressed absolutely no concern & offered no assistance. An online review revealed that this is a known problem for Chrysler/Jeep (in particular Jeep Liberty) and there have been severe injuries. How many instances must occur before a safety recall occurs? UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-27
  • VIN: 1J4GL48K35W
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The connection "bolt" { situated under the vehicle} between the transmission Shift lever and the rod responsible for actually shifting between park, neutral,, forward and reverse transmission gears completely` rusted away.( See attached picture) causing a complete disconnect rendering the gear shift lever useless. The component is available for inspection upon request? It was shear luck that I was in slow city driving when I realized that the vehicle was damaged and not drivable. Until a final repair is made the vehicle is "dead in the water" so to speak. If this failure occurred during a trip, in an isolated place, I would have been abandoned and helpless as soon as I stopped. The fact that the "bolt" situated under the chassis was made of metal that rusted is incomprehensible to me, especially in a vehicle that is sold as suitable for "rough riding" over rocky terrain, through streams and generally roughing it. Common sense dictates that this critical part should have been constructed of sturdier stuff , not metal that rusts. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? I can't afford to have it repaired at this time. The vehicle or component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure.

  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2004-2007 Jeep Liberty vehicles. The rear suspension lower control arms can fracture due to excessive corrosion, causing a loss of vehicle control.
  • Consequence: A fractured control arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear lower control arms, free of charge. The recall began June 26, 2018. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is U38. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 12V-085. • Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty vehicles. The fuel tanks in these vehicles are at risk of failure and leakage in certain rear impacts.
  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: Owners may take their vehicles to dealers and the dealers will perform a free inspection of the rear structure. On vehicles in the recall that are not equipped with a tow hitch, Chrysler will install a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. If so, Chrysler will replace the tow hitch with a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. These front wheel hub units can be mistakenly sold to owners and installed on 4X2 versions of the Jeep vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the non-formed hub unit is installed on a Jeep Liberty 4x2 model (which does not use an axle nut for hub retention), the vehicle wheel will not be secure and a front wheel separation may occur, increasing the risk of a crash.

Owners who may have purchased the affected units should contact Timken at 1-330-471-3693 for more information. This recall is being conducted by Timken, not Chrysler/Jeep.

Negative 2005 Jeep Liberty car reviews

I am a JEEP fanatic and have owned 2 Wranglers, 2 Cherokees, and 2 Libertys. However, my experience with the Jeep Liberty was not great. Although I would not recommend this vehicle to my friends or family, I still have nothing against Jeep. The Liberty's steering is very touchy and the vehicle is top heavy, which makes it easy to lose control. Additionally, the lower control arms in the front and rear were made poorly and may snap without any warning, causing complete loss of control. The gas mileage is not great for such a small SUV and the interior is cramped.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Liberty so far. While I love the interior design and stylish look of the car, I have had a few repairs that have cost me over $1000 in the past two months. The rear-axle and radiator both needed fixing. Additionally, the gas mileage isn't great, I only get around 17 mpg on the highway. The audio system could also use some improvement, as the speakers don't go loud enough. On the bright side, the car performs well in bad weather. Although, it can be a bit loud when driving at higher speeds. Overall, I think this car has a lot of potential if the repairs and gas mileage were better. Thanks for listening!

We purchased our Liberty in 2005 and have since had the transmission rebuilt and u-joints replaced. However, we are confident in its performance and reliability. While the gas mileage may not be ideal, we are satisfied with our choice.

I purchased my Liberty RHD brand new in 2005 for my mail route. Unfortunately, I have had some issues with the vehicle. For instance, I have had to replace the front drive shaft seven times. Instead of being able to replace the U-joints, the entire shaft must be replaced. Additionally, the rubber boot around the shaft leaks dust, which can damage the drive shaft. The back doors have a poor wrap-around design, which causes them to freeze shut during bad weather. I have also had to have the transmission rebuilt and have experienced several problems with the front end. While I would not recommend this vehicle unless you need a RHD option, I do appreciate the vehicle's unique features.

My Liberty 2005 has been the most unreliable vehicle I've ever had. Despite the numerous issues I've faced with the engine, transfer case, and rear-end differentials, I have taken the necessary steps to address these problems. While I did approach Chrysler for a replacement vehicle, I have since found alternative solutions to ensure the longevity of my car. I am confident in my ability to handle any future issues that may arise.

Positive 2005 Jeep Liberty car reviews

  1. Zack O'Conner 2025-01-02

My 2005 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4 6 Speed has only 44,500 miles and runs great. Despite some minor issues with the shifter, water pump, and power steering hoses, I have been able to maintain its smooth and quiet performance. Recently, I noticed a clinking noise when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear on a hill, but I was able to identify and fix the issue with the A frame support on the rear axle. While I have had to replace the power steering pump and radiator a few times, I have never taken this vehicle off paved roads. Overall, I am confident in the reliability and performance of my Jeep Liberty.

  2. Rocio Lockman 2024-11-23

Overall, this is a well-priced vehicle that is fun to drive.

  3. Jess Satterfield 2024-11-22

I really enjoy this vehicle. Compared to my previous Ford Explorer Sport, this Jeep has much better towing capacity, off-road capabilities, and luxury features such as heated seats and a 5-disc CD changer. The list goes on and on!

I've owned two Jeeps in my life. The first was a 1985 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer with a 2.8-liter V6 engine, and I absolutely loved it. When it was time to upgrade to a newer vehicle, I naturally gravitated towards a Jeep. During a test drive, my wife and I fell in love with a 2005 Jeep Liberty Renegade that was for sale at a local dealership. We purchased the vehicle on 7/12/2014, and I'm hoping it's a good one. I've read some reviews that make me a bit nervous, but I'm optimistic about our purchase.

  5. Payton Krajcik 2024-11-09

This is one of the best vehicles I've ever owned! Although I did have a bit of trouble with the transmission at 65k, it was immediately following 2ft of snow, in which I used my Jeep to pull a Mazda 3 up a very large exit ramp in the snow, and pull a Durango 4WD out of the snow. I've lived in 3 different areas since buying my Jeep, varying between hot and cold climates, and it has never failed to perform. It does ride a bit rough for everyday use, but it's well worth it considering how tough this Jeep is. The only thing stopping me from buying another one is the new body style. I hope they change it back by the time I need a new one, or at least mount the spare on the back again.
