2009 Jeep Liberty problems
The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.
Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.
The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

Common 2009 Jeep Liberty problems
The 2009 Jeep Liberty has received its fair share of complaints from owners, primarily concerning fuel economy, suspension issues, and transmission failure.
Fuel Economy
The 2009 Jeep Liberty has below-average fuel economy for its class. According to the search results, it averages 15 miles per gallon in the city and 21 miles per gallon on the highway.
Suspension Issues

Transmission Failure
The 2009 Jeep Liberty has also been plagued by transmission difficulties. The automatic transmission is known for lagging and failing prematurely, with gears moving slowly. Transmission fluid leaks are also a common problem, requiring frequent changes to avoid premature component wear.
Other Issues
In addition to the above problems, the 2009 Jeep Liberty has had issues with airbags and seatbelts, with recalls and problems with the airbag system and seat belts.
The 2009 Jeep Liberty has also been criticized for its poor interior trim quality, with some owners reporting that it feels cheap.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-20
- VIN: 1J8GN28K59W
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuel Spit Back During Refueling. When refueling at any gas pump, flammable fuel almost always spits back out of the filler hose, down the side of the vehicle and pools on ground by the tire. There has been a recall issued for the same issue and same vehicle model: Jeep Liberty KK, which runs from 2008-12. However, the recall only covers year 2008.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-08
- VIN: 1J8GN28K89W
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: While driving I heard a popping sound and felt the vehicle sway slightly. The vehicle continued to making intermittent banging noises towards the rear passenger side. Upon stopping and investigating I found the rear control arm had failed on the passenger side. I also examined the driver side rear control arm. It was intact but has significant rust, which likely contributed to the passenger side failure, as it also has significant rust. Car has been parked since the incident. I would like to know if the manufacturer/dealer will replace both components free of charge. There was a safety bulletin for the same issue for the 2004-2007 model year of the vehicle (18V-278). A search on the internet found the same failures in my model year for the lower control arms.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-16
- VIN: 1J8GN28K09W
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The Rear suspension lower control arms were rusted and cracked to the point they were close to breaking into pieces. There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms that alerted us to this problem - we happened to look under the car one day and noticed this. This problem was inspected, confirmed, and repaired by a local mechanic and reported to Jeep via their customer service. I am aware that this particular part caused a recall for the 2007 Jeep Liberty (and I'm guessing this is correlated with similar recalls in other manufacturers, e.g. the 2007-2011 Honda CRVs were recalled due to corrosion in the lower frame due to de-icing agents).
STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-22
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- VIN: 1J8GN28K99W
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I'm the original owner of a 2009 Jeep Liberty with a Skyslider roof that I barely used. I was driving when the Sky Slider roof suddenly blew open and back, snapping the cables and launching pieces of parts like missiles. It was a terrifying experience for me and my young children. I have dealt with the very loud wind noise for the past 12 years after having it evaluated several times by dealerships and being told there was nothing that could be done about it. It can be even more overwhelming for children with Autism and/or sensory issues. Fortunately, I was able to avoid an on-road accident, but still was hit with those projectile pieces and now have the added financial component of having to pay for repairs on a vehicle that the dealership has said most of the replacement parts have been discontinued on. The internet is full of complaints regarding these Sky Slider roof life-threatening issues. Something needs to be done to protect consumers from the physical and financial harm of these vehicles.

The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that all four rear control arms were fractured. The contact referenced NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V278000 (Suspension). The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 101,000.

I CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY TO FILE A CLAIM AND THE ADJUSTER DENIED IT BECAUSE HE STATED THAT IS A MANUFACTURES DEFECT AND THEY DON'T COVER THAT. THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE A RECALL, THIS COULD HAVE ENDED WORSE IF TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. IN ORDER FOR ME TO GET IT TO THE DEALER FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT I HAD TO TAPE IT DOWN (DUE TO WEATHER) AND I HAD TO USE TOW STRAPS TO KEEP THE SKY LINER FROM POPPING UP WHILE DRIVING. THIS REALLY MAKES ME MAD, I USED MY DEPLOYMENT MONEY TO BUY THIS VEHICLE AND I FEEL LIKE I WASTED ALL MY HARD EARNED MONEY FOR THIS PIECE OF JUNK. Hi there! I'm having a bit of trouble with my car. The gate warning light has come on three times and the interior lights have also come on. The switch in the rear hatchback has been replaced twice, but I'm still getting ice buildup inside the driver's side door. The area has been lubed, but unfortunately, it hasn't helped much. I've been having to chip ice from inside the door hinges. Do you have any suggestions or advice that could help me out?

You've taken great care of your vehicle since you bought it, only going to the dealership for routine maintenance. It sounds like you're interested in upgrading to a newer model with the latest driver assist safety features. Have you considered all the options available to you?

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience trading in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 150k miles for an 09 Liberty Limited with Nav, skyslider, leather, chromes - it's fully loaded with premium pack II, Nav, and roof. I have to say, the Liberty is such a huge improvement! It's almost the same size as my old Jeep, but with better mileage and similar power to the old 5.3l V8. The feature content is amazing, and the Nav is so easy to use - I had no trouble pairing it with my cell phone. Plus, it's been great in the snow - I recently drove in some heavy snow and felt safe and stable the whole time. I've heard that the 09 model has an improved ride over the 08, a better seal on the SkySlider roof, and the tan leather (single color) looks really nice. There's also more leather trim inside. Overall, I'm really happy with my decision to upgrade to the Liberty. Let me know if you have any questions!

You're going to love this! We have two packages available and let me tell you, they tow our travel trailer like a dream! We get around 13-15 mpg with the trailer, and without it, we're getting a solid 22 mpg on the road, just as rated. We've had a lot of vehicles over the years, but this one is definitely our favorite. And we're not the only ones who think so - at 70 years young, we've got plenty of experience to back it up!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Jeep Liberty. My wife and I had one of the first models back in '01 and we loved it so much that we recently decided to trade it in for a new '09 Liberty. We considered other vehicles like the Honda CRV and Subaru Forester, but ultimately, we decided that the Liberty was the best fit for us. The new model has a lot of great refinements and improvements over the old one. It's more spacious, rides smoother, and is quieter too. Of course, it still has that rugged 4WD drive that Jeep is known for. While it may not get the same gas mileage as the CRV or Subaru, or have the same 'car-like ride', that's not what we were looking for. We wanted a REAL 4WD, not just a cutesy imitation. And let me tell you, this thing can go through just about anything! Thanks for listening to my story.

Hi there! I have a 2009 Jeep Liberty that I've owned for a couple of years now. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues with it lately. The heater core needs to be replaced, and there are some squeaks that I hear every time I drive it. Additionally, the sunroof leaks and the headliner is in pretty rough shape. I'm feeling a bit frustrated about it all, but I'm hopeful that I can get these issues resolved soon. I purchased the vehicle from Drivers Village in Syracuse, NY, and while I've had some trouble with it, I'm sure they'll be able to help me out. Thanks for listening!

I'm so excited to share that I recently purchased my first American car after years of driving foreign vehicles. Despite the challenging times, I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to buy a new car and decided to give American car companies another chance. I opted for a Jeep and I must say, I'm pretty impressed so far. While the amount of product has lessened, the quality and workmanship have definitely improved. Although metal and materials have taken a back seat to technology, Jeep has managed to bring some of the important basics back to an industry that has become a bit 'boring'. Safety was one of my top priorities and I'm happy to say that Jeep delivers on that front with a full frame, rear-wheel drive, and superb styling. When I was looking at other SUVs, they all seemed to look and drive the same until I met Jeep. I highly recommend it!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with a car that I received as a birthday present. Although it was free, I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of it. I live in an area with extremely cold temperatures, and unfortunately, the heat doesn't always do the trick when it comes to warming up my feet or the dashboard. In fact, I've even had ice form on the inside of the windshield! When I brought this up with the dealer, they said that there wasn't much they could do about it. As a result, I wouldn't recommend this car for anyone living in colder climates. Thanks for listening!
Reinhold Dare 2024-07-03
The car is really comfortable to drive, with a great chassis and suspension. Handling is also very controlled and easy, even for such a heavy SUV. However, the engine is a bit slow, and the car can feel like it's dragging even when you're flooring it. Additionally, the fuel economy could be better. Some of the exterior details are a bit overdone, and the back end looks somewhat squished (done for ground clearance).

You got a great deal on it! It was bought new with only 29 miles on it, and $5k less than book. It runs well, but it could use a bit more power. The 4x4 and traction control system are amazing! It's the first vehicle you've had with such an awesome system. Although, there have been a few issues with the transfer case control module after 40k miles. The steering rack also had a leak, and the rear tire pressure sensor went out causing everything to shut down. Unfortunately, you couldn't use 4x4 with that out, and the rear hatch light comes on with the dome light at times. It rides like a rock, but turns on a dime. There is only a few inches of suspension travel, so don't get too crazy off-road because it is not forgiving.
