2008 Jeep Liberty problems

The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.
Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.
The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-23
- VIN: 1J8GN58KX8W
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I'M SPEEDING UP AS I'M PASSING A TRUCK ON 395, SIGNALING WITH LEFT BLINKER. START SPEED AS BEGINNING TO PASS IS APPROX. 55 MPH. I SIGNAL RIGHT AS I PULL BACK IN THE SOUTH BOUND LANE, TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS PEDAL AS I NOTICE I'M DRIVING 80 MPH. THE GAS PEDAL IS STUCK AND THE CAR IS GOING 80 MPH ON ITS OWN. I STEP ON THE BRAKE CAREFULLY BUT ITS ROCK HARD AND DOESN'T MOVE AT ALL. AT THIS POINT THE CAR IS STUCK AT 80 MPH. I TRY TO BRAKE AGAIN BUT THE SAME - BRAKE PEDAL IS STUCK, DOESN'T MOVE AT ALL AND IS ROCK HARD. ROAD CONDITIONS ARE GOOD SO I'M IN A "CONTROLLED PANIC", AND TRY THE BRAKE ONE MORE TIME. THIS TIME THE BRAKES ENGAGE AND I GET THE CAR DOWN TO 65 MPH. I DON'T WANT TO BURN THE BRAKES SO I RELEASE THE BRAKE AND IMMEDIATELY THE CAR SPEEDS UP ON ITS OWN TO 80 MPH. I REPEAT. SLOW TO 65 MPH, STEP OFF THE BRAKE AND AGAIN THE CAR IMMEDIATELY SPEEDS UP TO 80 MPH. AT THIS POINT MY THOUGHTS GO TO CRUISE CONTROL (WHICH I HAD NOT ACTIVATED OR USED ON THIS TRIP). I PULL THE "CANCEL" ON THE CRUISE CONTROL, NOTHING. I TRY AGAIN AND LOOK AT THE DASHBOARD WHERE THE CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT IS "OFF", INDICATING CRUISE CONTROL IS NOT ON. I TURN THE CRUISE CONTROL ON AND PULL THE "CANCEL" AGAIN AND BRAKE. THIS TIME THE CAR COMES OUT OF IT, AND I TURN THE CRUISE CONTROL OFF AGAIN. SINCE THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT EVEN ON TO BEGIN WITH, I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S WHAT ACTUALLY MADE THE CAR 'UNFREEZE'. I WAS LUCKY I WAS ON A STRAIGHT STRETCH OF ROAD WITH NO TRAFFIC IN FRONT OF ME. SINCE I WAS PASSING A TRUCK I'M NOT 100% SURE IF I SPED UP TO 80 MPH OR IF THE CAR SUDDENLY DID THAT ON ITS OWN. I DO BELIEVE THE CAR DID THAT, AS THERE WAS NO REASON TO GET UP TO THAT SPEED TO PASS SAFELY.

2008 Jeep Liberty recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2008 Jeep Liberty.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro 4X2 vehicles manufactured March 21, 2006, through March 1, 2008; and 2008 Jeep Liberty 4X2 vehicles manufactured February 15, 2007, through March 1, 2008. The transfer case heat shield may drop down and rub on the drive shaft, weakening it and potentially causing the drive shaft to break.
- Consequence: If the drive shaft breaks, a section of it can strike the transfer case tunnel with enough force that the airbag computer will believe the vehicle is in a crash and thus deploy the airbags. Additionally, the drive shaft failure will result in a loss of motive power. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will add a bracket to support the rear of the heat shield, free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on May 29, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N10.

- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 1, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

THESE SUSPENSION SYSTEMS WERE PRODUCED WITH GRADE 2 CARRIAGE BOLTS INSTEAD OF THE PROPER GRADE 5 CARRIAGE BOLTS. THE IMPROPER GRADE 2 CARRIAGE BOLTS COULD EXPERIENCE A LOSS OF CLAMPING FORCE FOR THE BOTTOM STRUT FORK.
- Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE A LOSS OF EFFECTIVE LIFT AND LOWERING OF THE AFFECTED VEHICLE, POSSIBLY CREATING THE DRIVER TO PANIC WHICH COULD POSSIBLY LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: ROCK KRAWLER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND PROVIDE A FREE REMEDY. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 15. 2008. ALL THE AFFECTED UNTITS HAVE BEEN REMEDIED. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ROCK KRAWLER AT 1-518-270-9822.

I built my Liberty up with a 3-inch lift kit, skid plates, and other modifications, which I believe improved the vehicle's exterior stance. With the right tires (I highly recommend the BFGoodrich All Terrains), Jeeps can get through anything. The interior is comfortable and has a lot of neat storage spaces, including fold-flat seats, including the passenger seat. I have not experienced any mechanical problems, and the vehicle has a very tight turning radius. However, I did encounter some issues with the skyslider. While it is awesome for going to the beach, it leaks water into my headliner, which has caused staining and an unpleasant smell. Additionally, it causes quite a bit of wind noise. I believe these issues were addressed in the 2009 model.

I really enjoyed reading through the reviews, and I couldn't help but notice that some people might benefit from taking better care of their vehicles. If you follow the instructions in the manual, most vehicles can last well beyond their manufacturer's warranties. I have personally owned two Jeep Grand Cherokees, and I can attest to their reliability. My first one had 135,000 miles on it when I bought it, and I sold it with 280,000 miles on it. My second one, a 1996 model, still runs great with 336,000 miles on it. I was pleasantly surprised by how comfortable this Jeep Liberty was. The only issue I had was that it tended to slip in 2-wheel drive on wet pavement, but switching to 4x4 solved the problem. While I was hoping for better mileage than my 96 Jeep, it was about the same, which is still pretty good.

This is our 3rd Liberty Limited ('01, '04, '08), and it is by far the best. Virtually everything has been improved to address any shortcomings. It's great to see that the Liberty is no longer considered the 'poor sibling' compared to the Grand Cherokee or the Commander.

Hello! I just wanted to share our experience with our jeep. We've had it for six years now, and it's been a great purchase for us. We bought it with only 30,000 miles, and it now has 112,000. About 8 months ago, we had to replace the heater core, but other than that, my wife, who travels a lot, has not had any issues at all. The only downside is that the interior colors aren't the greatest, as the seats are stained and won't come out. But overall, we're really happy with our jeep!

We've owned a 97 Wrangler, 99 Cherokee and now this completely loaded Liberty. Loved them all and this one is the best. We just had a huge snowstorm here near Chicago. My wife and I went out for a drive before our streets were plowed. No one else could make it except for other Jeeps or serious 4WD trucks. Our Liberty went through 19-20 inches of snow without any issues. It's comfortable, functional, and very capable in deep sand or snow.

We bought our '08 Liberty brand new in March of '09 and got a great deal with all the incentives. The first 60,000 miles were fine, but then we started experiencing some problems. Unfortunately, it leaks in rainwater to the rear cargo area and the power mirrors no longer function. At 80,000 miles, we had to replace the A/C entirely. Now, at 90,000 miles, the Check Engine Light indicates an electrical failure that causes the engine to rough idle. It's not very enjoyable to drive in the rain, even with all-season tires, as the vehicle is unstable. Additionally, the plastic wheel moldings are coming loose and separating from the body, and we're constantly replacing screws and pins to keep the mud flaps on. The windshield washer has also ceased to function. The top fuel mileage is 18 MPG on the highway, and it guzzles fuel in the city. We've maintained this vehicle just as Jeep recommends since new, and we had hoped to keep it for at least 150,000 miles. However, it now appears that we'll need to correct the electrical problem and sell it as soon as possible. Having owned Jeeps in the past, I'm hesitant to recommend this vehicle to anyone. I know it's discontinued, but I doubt we'll ever trust another Jeep product.

It seems like the motor in the driver window has given out after about 2.5 years of use. Unfortunately, shortly after that, there was a short in the rear window wiper causing it to start wiping on its own. It was quite frustrating as I didn't turn it on and it wouldn't turn off! I had to pull over and turn off the car and turn it back on a few times hoping to get it to stop. Then, in late 2015, the cruise control, radio, and all the door locks except the driver door stopped working, including the hatch! I couldn't even open the hatch! I did my best to care for the car, with regular oil changes and maintenance, and even a full tune-up at 4 years. I never took it off-roading, only using it to get to work and back home.

I've owned nine Jeeps over the past 25 years, seven of which were Grand Cherokees with 4.0 Straight 6 Cylinder Engines, and they were all fantastic! One of them, a 1993 model, went over 425,000 miles, while another, a 1997 model, went 395,000 miles, and a 1998 model went 385,000 miles. However, the two Liberty's that I owned were junk by comparison. The 2002 model was the better of the two, but I began experiencing various electrical problems relatively early on, by my mileage standards, which admittedly might be higher than most. The primary source of the electrical problems in both the 2002 and the 2008 Jeep Liberty is the I have been a loyal Jeep customer for a long time and have always spoken highly of my past experiences with the brand. However, it seems that Jeep/Chrysler is more focused on acquiring new customers than retaining their loyal ones.

There are many quality cars available today, so it may be best to consider other options before purchasing this car. While the engine and 6-speed manual transmission are generally reliable, they may not be the best fit for this particular car. The engine lacks power and has a small power band, with long ratios that make acceleration difficult. Additionally, there have been issues with various components of the car, including the 4WD, wiper switches, window switches, door lock switches, airbag sensor, door sensors, gas tank, shift boot, seat trim, spare tire, wheels, brake pads, and exhaust flex joint. While the car was covered by a lifetime powertrain warranty and lifetime maxcare, the cost of maintenance and repairs added up quickly. Ultimately, it may be best to explore other options before investing in this car.Another time it was in for service for two consecutive weeks, brought it home, and had something else fail the very next day. In my opinion, it might be better to consider other options before purchasing this car. Thank you for considering my experience.

I leased this vehicle back in January 2008. Unfortunately, I have experienced two episodes of 'throttle malfunction' where the accelerator pedal sticks to the floor and the vehicle speeds out of control. Despite taking the vehicle back to the dealer three times, they have been unable to duplicate the problem. As a result, I have decided not to drive the vehicle as I do not feel safe doing so. I have had to hire a Lemon Law Attorney to help me break the lease and get rid of this obviously unsafe vehicle. It's worth noting that the vehicle has stored codes that reflect this malfunction.
