2008 Jeep Liberty problems
The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.
Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.
The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

- Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Dodge Nitro 4X2 vehicles manufactured March 21, 2006, through March 1, 2008; and 2008 Jeep Liberty 4X2 vehicles manufactured February 15, 2007, through March 1, 2008. The transfer case heat shield may drop down and rub on the drive shaft, weakening it and potentially causing the drive shaft to break.
- Consequence: If the drive shaft breaks, a section of it can strike the transfer case tunnel with enough force that the airbag computer will believe the vehicle is in a crash and thus deploy the airbags. Additionally, the drive shaft failure will result in a loss of motive power. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will add a bracket to support the rear of the heat shield, free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on May 29, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N10.

I've taken this vehicle on some really rough roads, from sea level to over 8,000 feet in the same day. I've crawled over rocks and used every off-road feature, and it always came through. While I do wish it had better fuel efficiency, this baby is tough, yet plenty fast with good braking. Unfortunately, I had to ditch the Goodyears that came with it. However, after Discount Tire boosted me up one size and I put on Yokohamas, there was an instant and huge improvement in handling, ride quality, and quietness. JEEP should consider discontinuing the Goodyears, as I had to replace three of them within months. Thankfully, Discount Tire treated my prior two purchases as if I was coming in to buy only two more, not the four Yokos I was buying. Overall, the JEEP is a great vehicle, but it needs better tires.

I purchased this vehicle for two reasons: to transport all our supplies for the tradeshows we do for our business and to have the ability to handle Great Lakes snow storms. I am happy to report that it gets 5 stars in both categories. I have read reviews that say it is uncomfortable to ride in and sloppy on the road, but I find mine just the opposite. It is comfortable even when loaded with supplies and rides as I would expect a vehicle of its class to ride. It handles great both on slippery and dry roads, and I feel very safe driving it in all conditions.

I was a bit hesitant about purchasing a Jeep, but after considering the Liberty's features and price, I decided to take the plunge. I purchased the 08 Liberty Sport 4x4, which was slightly used (2700 miles), and I couldn't be happier with my decision. It handled the snow really well this winter, and I even drove it 1700 miles cross-country. The drive was comfortable, even at speeds of 80 mph or more. I also took it off-road on some of Arizona's most challenging roads, and it performed admirably in all instances. While I can't comment on its reliability yet (as I've only driven 6700 miles), so far, everything seems to be going well.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Liberty! It sounds like you're really happy with the new look and the driving experience. While the interior may be simple, it's still nice and functional. It's great to hear that the suspension is firm but not too rough, and that the turning radius is amazing. I hope that the gas mileage continues to improve as the engine breaks in. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Liberty!

I've owned my 2008 Liberty for over 3 months now and I must say, it's been a great experience. I find that Consumer Reports doesn't do justice for the Jeep. The ride is smooth and comfortable, making it perfect for traveling, camping, and just getting around. While the gas mileage could be better, I still manage to get 18-24 miles per gallon, which is above the sticker range of 16-22. I also disagree with Consumer Reports' claim that the engine is weak and difficult to pass on the open road. In my experience, this has not been the case at all. Overall, I highly recommend this Jeep over most in its class.

We purchased this car brand new in 2008, but unfortunately, it did not meet our expectations. During the test drive, we noticed some issues with the dashboard, which made us hesitant to buy it. However, we were swayed by the exterior styling. Over the course of three years, we experienced some difficulties with the window motors and the dashboard, which required repairs. Additionally, we found the seats to be quite uncomfortable. Despite these challenges, we were able to achieve around 10 MPG in the city and 16 MPG on the freeway. Overall, while our experience with this car was not ideal, we learned a lot from it and appreciate the time we had with it.

I have been the owner of a Liberty for 9 months and have driven it for 8,000 miles. While the car has some great features, I have found the interior to be a bit lacking in quality. Additionally, I have experienced some issues with water leakage from the rear cargo area, which can be frustrating. The brake assist is helpful on slopes, but it may not be as effective in emergency situations. On the other hand, the tow package is fantastic. It's important to be careful not to accidentally engage the 4WD. The car's MPG is not great, but I was able to purchase it with some great pricing incentives. Overall, I am hopeful that with some care and maintenance, my Liberty will continue to serve me well in the future.

I completely agree that the Liberty occupies a unique space in the market, sitting between the smaller, more stylish sport utility vehicles and the pricier, larger SUVs. While it is often grouped with the Rav-4 and Escape, it really stands out as the only option if you need to haul cargo or explore rugged terrain. Personally, I would have preferred if they had kept the Cherokee name. As someone who enjoys the outdoors and also works in IT downtown, I find that this Jeep is perfect for both tight city driving and off-road adventures. However, I do have a major issue with the skyslider - it was poorly designed and broke almost immediately. Despite having taken it to the dealership over 10 times for the same issue, Jeep has not been willing to stand behind their product. I am even considering pursuing a Lemon Law claim.

I understand your mixed feelings about your Jeep. While it looks great both inside and out, it's hard to ignore the abundance of cheap plastic that scratches easily. The MPG sticker may say 20 mpg on the highway, but realistically you can expect around 16-17 mpg combined city/hwy. It's also worth noting that the drivetrain hasn't been updated with the rest of the Jeep, which can make it feel a bit sluggish from a stop. Overall, I appreciate your honest review and hope you continue to enjoy your Jeep despite its flaws.

I would not recommend purchasing a vehicle with a slider roof based on my personal experience. During my test drive on 1/1/09, I asked about the roof noise and was told it would be a minor adjustment that could be done the next day. As the rebates were expiring that day, I decided to purchase the car. Unfortunately, the next day they were unable to fix the issue and I had to leave the vehicle with them. After a week, the district manager and two service representatives drove the car and all agreed that the noise was excessive. A week later, they replaced a part and declared it fixed, but unfortunately, the noise remains unchanged. I have paperwork showing that a Chrysler engineer said the repair they were going to do would not fix the problem. Despite this, Chrysler has refused to buy the car back and has stated that the noise is normal. Please be aware of this issue before making your purchase.
