2011 Jeep Liberty problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.

Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.

The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

Common 2011 Jeep Liberty problems

The 2011 Jeep Liberty has several common problems that have been reported by owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM), which is the main computer responsible for controlling various electrical functions in the vehicle. The TIPM is known to fail around 80,000 miles, causing problems such as the engine cranking but not starting, power windows not rolling up or down, the horn going off randomly, and power door locks locking and unlocking on their own. Replacing the defective TIPM module is the only solution, which can cost around $1,000.

Another common problem is engine failures, which have been reported by some owners around 120,000 miles. The issue is caused by the springs in the engine failing, leading to piston #2 destroying the entire engine. Replacing the motor costs over $5,000, depending on local labor rates.

Power window failures are also a common issue in the 2011 Jeep Liberty, typically occurring around 45,000 miles. Both the window motor and regulator wear out, requiring replacement. The cost of swapping them out is around $700.

Additionally, there are three recalls on the 2011 Jeep Liberty, including two for the airbags and one for the steering column, all of which Jeep will replace for free.

The 2011 Jeep Liberty is not the most reliable SUV and can last anywhere from 8-10 years with proper maintenance. It is also capable of reaching up to 200,000 miles on the odometer, depending on its usage and how well it’s maintained.

The 2011 Jeep Liberty offers a wide range of technology features, such as keyless entry, cruise control, air-conditioning, a tilt-only steering wheel, and an optional touchscreen interface. However, the optional touchscreen interface can be somewhat unintuitive for some buyers, and there is no built-in navigation system.

Despite these issues, the 2011 Jeep Liberty is still a reasonable option for used car buyers today due to its affordability and off-road capabilities.

Negative 2011 Jeep Liberty car reviews

  1. Danny Leffler 2024-11-29

I downsized from a F150 4x4 5.7L V8 to my Jeep Liberty. Surprisingly, I was getting better fuel mileage in my truck. However, I have not been impressed with the Jeep Liberty at all and if I could go back, I would. I have had it for 10 months and feel it was not the best decision I have ever made. I highly regret not researching this vehicle before buying it. Although it looks very good, it did not meet my expectations. I wish I had made a better choice. I have worked at a car lot and I know a lot about cars, but I guess I just jumped the gun on this one because the price sounded nice. I should have known better.

  2. Rashad Ritchie 2024-10-11

I bought my 2011 Jeep Liberty Renegade last March and fell in love with it. It's hands down the best winter vehicle I've ever owned, getting about 20MPG in the summer and 16-17MPG in the winter. It's the perfect small SUV. I even took it on a 24-hour road trip with five passengers and while luggage space was a little tight, the ride was comfortable. I also took it off-roading in the Big Horn Mountains and was pleasantly surprised that it lived up to the Jeep name, driving 14 hours home without any issues. While there are a few minor kinks, such as the lack of power despite being a V6 and drafty doors in the back, I still love this vehicle. However, after owning it for roughly a year, I'm currently seeking a new car due to some frustrating issues. Despite my regular maintenance routine of washing it once a week, wiping it down after, and hand waxing once a month, the oil pan rusted out, the gate is rusted shut, and the doors are rusting on the inside. It's disappointing that a 7-year-old vehicle with under 100k miles should be rusting so quickly, especially in the undercarriage. As someone who takes great care of their vehicle, there's no reason it should be rusting like this. Lastly, it's not the easiest vehicle to work on - it took myself and two mechanics 12 hours to replace the oil pan due to its placement.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my new Jeep Liberty Limited 4x4. As a proud owner of my 5th Jeep, I must say that I am very pleased with the interior and roominess, especially coming from an '06 Jeep Liberty. The rear seats fold perfectly flat, making it super easy for me to fit my two mountain bikes inside. Plus, the roof rack is strong enough to carry my two kayaks on top! Another great feature is that this vehicle can be flat towed behind an RV, thanks to the Command Trac II with a neutral position. However, I have been experiencing a slight miss at highway speeds, and unfortunately, the dealer has not been able to find a cure for it yet. I am currently waiting for an answer from Jeep. Additionally, the fuel mileage could be better, as I am getting about 16 mpg overall. Overall, I am still very happy with my purchase and can't wait to take it on more adventures!

  4. Joel Crona 2024-08-13

Replaced rear shocks at 40k, heater core at 50k, two coils, and addressed a rear hatch window leak that was setting off the alarm. While there was some engine knock from day one, the dealer assured me that it was normal. Despite the underpowered 3.7 motor, I am confident in my decision to own a Jeep or Chrysler product.

  5. Jaren Schuppe 2024-08-05

I recently traded my 2004 Jeep Cherokee for a 2010 Jeep Liberty in the hopes of improving my gas mileage. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with the car. The back hatch sensor and hood sensor have both been replaced, which caused the remote car start to fail. Additionally, my heat and A/C seem to be stuck on defrost, even when they're turned off. The 'auto' light position on the headlights is also broken, and the dash reads 'Low Spare Tire' even though I've had it checked multiple times and the spare is not low. I've been told that the computer software needs to be updated, but I can't afford to take it to a dealer. It's been frustrating, but I'm hopeful that I can find a solution soon.

Positive 2011 Jeep Liberty car reviews

  1. Unique Ernser 2024-11-15

We've had this vehicle for several weeks now and we absolutely love it. I highly recommend taking a look at one and test driving it yourself, despite what the 'experts' may say. I almost passed on this vehicle based on their reviews, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. It's truly an excellent, solid, and well-built vehicle that runs quietly.

  2. Maxine Ryan 2024-10-11

And it's reassuring to know that if any issues arise, Jeep/Dodge will take care of it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

The 2011 Jeep Liberty Limited 4X2 is a great vehicle that drives securely on any road surface. Although the dash surfaces could have been designed with better quality materials, they are easy to clean. The only downside is the 'Poor' MPG, which most owners will attest to. Additionally, the engine can be a bit sluggish when passing others on the highway and freeway. If you plan on buying a used Jeep Liberty from a private party, make sure the current owner has performed regular service on the automatic transmission every 20K-30K miles, as well as regular oil and filter changes every 3K miles. Also, ensure that regular cooling system service was performed and tune-ups. If the current owner cannot provide documents of past service history of this vehicle, it may be best to look elsewhere.

I just wanted to start by saying how impressed I am with this Jeep. I have absolutely no regrets about buying it. I was looking for a basic four-wheel drive vehicle with true off-road and towing ability, and the Liberty definitely fits the bill. One of my favorite things about it is the ride height and driving position, which make for a really comfortable ride. I also love the AUX plug-in and the surprisingly spacious rear seat. Even though it doesn't have cruise control, the fuel economy isn't great, and there are no tinted windows or roof rack, I'm still really happy with my purchase. The only things I'm not crazy about are the light gray inserts on the seats (which seem to attract stains) and the cheap hinge on the center console. I'll definitely need to address that in the future. So far, though, the reliability has been excellent.

Firstly, I'd like to share my experience with the Xterra. In 2007, both my friend and I purchased off-road SUVs. While he opted for the Xterra, I chose the Liberty. We have taken both vehicles on some serious off-road adventures, and unfortunately, the Xterra never made it back on its own. On the other hand, my Liberty has been indestructible. It's worth noting that my friend eventually sold his Xterra, while I still have my trusty Liberty. Although some may argue that the interior lacks sex appeal, what truly matters is its robust body and reliable mechanics. In my opinion, the Liberty is a true SUV that stays true to its core.
