Jeep Liberty problems

The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.
Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.
The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

Common Jeep Liberty problems
The Jeep Liberty, a compact SUV known for its off-road capabilities and unique features, has faced several common problems throughout its production years. These issues have been reported by numerous owners and have led to recalls, lawsuits, and general dissatisfaction.
One of the most prevalent problems across all Jeep Liberty models is engine misfires, which can be caused by faulty intake valves. For instance, the intake valves in the 1st generation Liberty (2002-2007) may not function properly, leading to problems with air intake and combustion. This issue can trigger the check engine light and result in misfires or a loss of power.
The 2004-2007 Jeep Liberties are also known for fluid leaks, particularly from the transfer case or differential pinion seal. These leaks can lead to significant repair costs, especially if the vehicle is no longer covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
The 2008-2010 Jeep Liberty models have experienced issues with the Sky Slider sunroof, which has been criticized for excessive wind noise, too much sun exposure, and failing materials. In some cases, water has leaked into the interior due to faulty seals, leading to damaged interiors and a class action lawsuit against Chrysler.
The 2011 and 2012 Jeep Liberty models have faced problems with the integrated power module (TIPM), which regulates power distribution within the vehicle. Drivers have reported all warning lights illuminating, gauges dropping to zero, and inability to start the vehicle due to this issue.
Power door locks have also been a common problem in the Jeep Liberty, with many drivers reporting misbehaving door lock actuators requiring replacement. The cost of repair can vary, but it can reach up to $200.
In summary, the Jeep Liberty has faced a wide range of issues, from engine problems to faulty sunroofs and power door locks. These problems have affected various model years, with some experiencing more severe issues than others. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a purchasing decision.
What is the common problem with Jeep Liberty?
Engine misfire is a common problem for both generations of the Liberty. Drivers have reported cases of engine knock, rough idling, and excessive vibration when shifting gears. The most common culprit was faulty intake valves.
Is a Jeep Liberty a reliable car?
The Jeep Liberty Reliability Rating is 3.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 14th out of 26 for midsize SUVs.

I checked online and this seems to be a known problem caused by the ethanol in the fuel reacting with a check valve. HAVING FUEL SHOOT OUT AT YOU EVERY TIME YOU FILL THE CAR IS DANGEROUS!!!

I bought my Jeep new and I absolutely love it! However, I have had some trouble with the rear window regulators. Unfortunately, they have broken three times already. To fix the issue, I had to take off the door cover and prop up the window with a 1x1 stick. I don't think anyone sits in the back of my car anyway! Interestingly, my brother and nephew also have Jeeps and they have experienced the same issue. It would be great if the manufacturer could do a recall or at least make the part available. Unfortunately, they don't, which means you are stuck going to the dealer. I can buy the motor, but not the regulator.

This car has been an amazing machine for the 14 years that my mother and I have owned it. It was passed down to me during my senior year of high school in 2014 and has taken me from California to my current home in Chicago. It has been there for me through the ups and downs of my life. Although it lacks traction control, ABS and 4WD, it's still fun to drive, especially in rain and snow. We were consistent with maintenance and as a result, it has been as reliable, if not more so, than Japanese cars. The only issues we've had were with the A/C condenser (in the desert on the way to Vegas, ugh), the radiator, the rear window regulators (which are notoriously prone to failure in Libertys), and worn valve cover gaskets. Other than that, the engine and transmission are still running strong, and the suspension is holding up well. A few interior bits are broken, worn or torn, but that's to be expected in an American car of this vintage. If you can find a Liberty with less than 200,000 or even 150,000 miles and a decent maintenance history, then buy it. This car can last well above 200,000 or even 300,000 miles if taken care of. Maybe even more. It's just that good.

I'm so glad to hear that you're still loving your Jeep after 3 years of ownership! It sounds like you've got a great vehicle on your hands. Despite the poor gas mileage, it's great to hear that you're enjoying the sport model with all the options, including the sun roof, upgraded sound system, and chrome package with painted fender flares and matching wheels. The Jeep is a solid vehicle with plenty of power and good off-road capabilities, making it perfect for driving around town or exploring the many forest service roads in Arizona. It's great to hear that your gas mileage even increased by 2 mpg for no apparent reason! Although you did experience an emission engine code at 90k miles, it's great to hear that replacing the gas cap solved the problem. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Growing up in rural Ohio, we were taught to be frugal. There wasn't much in the way of luxury. So when I got my first vehicle, a 2000 Ford Ranger, I expected to have it for another 10-15 years. After exhaust issues, along with countless Ohio winters eating away at the body, it was finally time to get something new. I wasn't looking for a Liberty when I got it, but if I saw the reviews, I wouldn't have got one. However, don't listen to those reviews, as you'd be making a BIG mistake. The 210 hp motor, while being undersized in comparison to the competition, is more than adequate. It has no issue getting up to 60 and beyond, and is relatively quiet at higher speeds. The handling is exactly what you need it to be. This Jeep is easy to drive, just enough 'fancy' to appeal to the higher class, and enough 'no frills' attitude to appeal to that crowd. This Jeep is perfect for your drive to work, a cruise on the highway, a trek on the trails, and anything in between. With a 5,000-pound tow capacity, it's also good for towing your camper for your weekend away. When comparing fuel economy to other SUVs in its class, the Liberty does fall flat, and the seats are a little uncomfortable, but when it comes down to it, for me, no vehicle compares to the Liberty. If you're looking for a reliable, go-anywhere vehicle that'll last you 20 years, then the Liberty is for you! I highly recommend it!

Best car you'll ever own! I recently moved into a mountain home and needed to trade in my city car for a 4x4. This car has not failed me in the mud, snow, or steep mountain roads yet! I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I purchased a brand new Jeep Liberty 2006 and have had some issues with the windows regulators for the rear windows. Unfortunately, I have had to replace them about 6 times, which can be quite costly at around $200.00 each time. It would be great if Chrysler could issue a recall for these plastic regulators. Additionally, I had an issue with the gear shifter light, which I attempted to fix by replacing a fuse. However, the dealer informed me that they didn't have a fix for it and that the whole shifter would need to be replaced. I was surprised by this, so I decided to leave it as is. Lastly, I had some trouble with the interior door handles, which came off after several months of use. Despite these issues, the engine runs great and I haven't experienced any major problems. It's just a shame that Chrysler used such cheap materials.

Although my experience with my 2002 Jeep has been challenging, I can confidently say that it is not a reliable vehicle. Despite having to replace the power steering twice, fixing an oil leak, and addressing issues with the starter and heat, the vehicle continues to have problems. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this vehicle to others.

I recently purchased a 2005 Liberty with only 65K miles on it. However, I soon discovered that the vehicle had some issues. For instance, the gas tank has a known issue where it spills gas down the side of the car every time it is filled. Additionally, the transmission works, but the shifting is not smooth. The suspension wears out quickly, and even Jeep enthusiasts admit that it is normal to replace the struts every couple of years. The engine also has some problems, with metal found in the oil at 70K miles. I had to replace the engine multiple times, and even with the replacements, it is still noisy, gutless, and fuel-hungry. Therefore, I would advise against purchasing a 2005 Liberty with less than 100K miles, even if it looks nice on Craigslist.

I am reporting review (138141727) (Jeep Engine Failures due to Valve Seats) because my daughter recently purchased a 2002 Jeep Liberty. We changed the oil and I advised her to check it every two weeks since the vehicle was new to her. She followed my instructions for a couple of weeks and reported that it used no oil. She is very diligent in watching her mileage to plan oil changes every 3000 miles. However, one day when she went to work, the engine started to knock. Upon checking the oil, she found it to be 3 quarts low and received no low oil warning. We took it to a shop and were informed that it needs a new engine. Unfortunately, no reputable salvage yard wants to sell the engine due to a known oil gear issue, so they will not even warranty one with low miles. A rebuilt motor with the oil gear issue fixed costs $3200.00. With labor, my daughter is looking at $4500.00 to replace an engine with only 119000 miles. After researching online, I found many complaints regarding the blown motor of 2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7 engine. The average seems to be 96000 miles. Many people online said they contacted Jeep and they were not able to help. While I do not expect a new engine for free, I would like to see an American company doing everything it can to create customer loyalty, especially when the average vehicle today does 250000 miles by most manufacturers and Toyota is at 400000. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Best regards, Steve
