1999 Hyundai Sonata problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-01-30
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON JAN 30TH, 2015 AND THE CAR STARTED PULLING TO THE RIGHT. THE NEXT DAY, SAT THE 31ST, I JACKED UP THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE CAR TO SEE WHY THE CAR STEERED TO THE RIGHT. I FOUND THE LOWER WHEEL ASSEMBLY ATTACHMENT TO THE FRAME HAD COME LOOSE. THAT WAS BECAUSE THE FRAME HAD THREE OF FOUR SIDES RUSTED THRU. THE CONDITION COULD HAVE CAUSED A MORE SEVERE ACCIDENT IF THE ATTACHMENT TO THE FRAME HAD PULLED COMPLETELY APART. I WILL CHECK WITH HYUNDAI TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. THANKS FOR LISTENING. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-19
  • VIN: KMHWF25S2XA
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: AFTER REMOVING THE DRIVERS FRONT WHEEL I NOTICED THE CONTROL ARM ATTACHMENT POINT SEVERELY RUSTED, & THE SUB FRAME CRACKED READY TO BREAK. I KNOW ABOUT THE RECALL. UNFORTUNATELY NEBRASKA ALONG WITH OTHER STATES WERE NOT INCLUDED. THIS CAR WAS WELL MAINTAINED BY THE ORIGINAL OWNER, & DRIVEN VERY LITTLE IN SALT/ SNOW CONDITIONS. SHE PURCHASED @ APPROX. 80 YEARS OF AGE. NHTSA SHOULD TAKE A LOOK AT THIS AGAIN. WATER BEING TRAPPED IN THE SUB FRAMES IS THE REAL PROBLEM, SALT MAY HAVE ONLY MADE THE FAILURE HAPPENED A BIT SOONER. I HAVE TALKED WITH HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE, & WAS TOLD THE CAR WOULD NOT BE COVERED BY THE RECALL. I LIVE 8 MILES AWAY FROM IOWA, WHICH IS COVERED BY THE RECALL. OMAHA DOES USE SALT ON THE STREETS. 14 -15 YEARS FOR A SUB FRAME TO ROT AWAY SEEMS QUITE SHORT. THE PROBLEM IS A DESIGN DEFECT NOT ALLOWING THE WATER TO GET OUT. NO STATES SHOULD HAVE BEEN LEFT OUT! WHO DOESN'T WASH THEIR CAR REGULARLY? HOW MANY 1999-2004 MODELS OF THIS CAR ARE STILL ON THE ROAD? FORTUNATELY FOR OUR FAMILY WE NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL SIGNIFICANTLY OUT OF POSITION, & BOTH FRONT WHEELS LEANING IN AT THE TOP. SEPARATION OF THE CONTROL ARM FROM THE FRAME WOULD NOT PRETTY AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED. PEOPLE THAT HAVE LOOKED AT THE PICTURES I TOOK OF BOTH SIDES ON THIS CAR SEEM TO AGREE, WE WERE PROBABLY ONLY A FEW MORE CHUCK HOLES AWAY! WILL HYUNDAI NOTIFY CURRENT OWNERS OF ANY OF THESE CARS REGARDLESS OF WHICH STATE & REMEDY CORRECTLY?? WILL HYUNDAI, OR GOVERNMENT PUT OUT TSB'S OR PSA'S ALERTING ANY CURRENT OWNERS OF THE POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC CONDITION WHICH MAY COST SOMEONE THEIR LIFE? *TR

1999 Hyundai Sonata recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1999 Hyundai Sonata.

2009-04-16
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.
  • Consequence: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

  • Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION THAT LEADS TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION COULD RESULT FROM MOTION OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR WHICH MOUNT TO THE ADJUSTABLE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY. THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS AND COULD PREVENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING A CRASH WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR.
  • Consequence: NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY DURING A SIDE IMPACT CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL MORE SECURELY FASTEN THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESSES AND CONNECTORS TO THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SEAT CUSHION FRAMES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 28, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

The driving of this car has been normal. It has been reliable wherever I wanted to go.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the GLSv6 that my wife and I bought with 50k+ miles on it. After a few trips to get some known problems fixed, everything seems to be running smoothly. I've put over 20k more miles on it and, even though I haven't been the most regular with oil changes, it's still going strong. I have noticed some clunks over bumps and some body lean, but overall it's been a great car. During a road trip, I found that one of the rear wheel bearings was very loose, which could have been disastrous, but thankfully Hyundai paid for everything and there was no deductible required. Thanks for listening!

If you're considering buying this car from the dealer, I would suggest looking elsewhere. In my experience, I had to take it back to the dealer around 10-15 times in the first year alone for various issues such as recalls, peeling paint, wheel bearings in rear, crankshaft sensor, burnt wiring in transmission, carpet falling apart, airbag sensors, and more. Unfortunately, the sensors went out after the warranty expired and it was expensive to replace them. Overall, I would not recommend this car. Currently, I'm letting it sit until I pay it down some because the trade-in value is not great. On the other hand, I've been driving a Honda with 152,000 miles with no major problems. I did have some issues with the dealer I got the car from, as they didn't have a loaner car available 95% of the time and wanted me to sit for four to five hours. I only got a loaner car twice and it was an Accent. I hope this helps you make an informed decision!

I bought this car 4 years ago and have been using it to commute to work. In the 50K miles I've driven it, I've only had one issue with a sensor, which was quickly resolved. The previous owner took good care of the car, and I have continued to do the same. Despite its history, I didn't expect it to last this long, but I'm pleasantly surprised that it's still running smoothly. You can actually purchase this car for less than $3K, and if you know it has been well-maintained, I highly recommend giving it a try. I took a chance on it and I'm still driving it several years later!

I purchased my Hyundai back in December of 2001. Unfortunately, in January of the following year, I had to take it to the shop because the transmission had fallen out. Although it took until February to get my car back, the dealership called in a specialist to fix it, which I appreciated. In May, my family and I took a trip from Indianapolis to Detroit, but unfortunately, we got stranded. I replaced the battery, but by June, we were back in the shop again. For the next six months, my car would sit in the dealership, and I would only get it back for a few days at a time before it would break down again. However, I am happy to say that I am getting it back tomorrow for the last time. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The car seemed well designed and reliable so I gave it to my daughter. Unfortunately, she had a fender bender due to black ice and the repair shop found that the engine cradle frame on the right side was almost rusted into. It looks like it will cost more to fix than the car is worth. I wanted to share this experience as a friendly warning to other owners to check out their frames as soon as possible.

Hi there! I noticed that my car has reached 301,000 miles and unfortunately, the motor has started to make some noise and the transmission is slipping between gears. However, I'm proud to say that all of the original equipment is still intact, except for a few replacements such as the tune-up/filters, a/c compressor, a/c block, inside fan motor (x3), rad., alt., and 1st replacement rotors (1st brake job @ dealer @ 80k miles). The suspension is still the original one and I haven't had any major motor or transmission work done, just normal maintenance and oil changes every 10k miles. Overall, it's been a remarkable car that has kept up with me!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. It has been absolutely wonderful! I've owned quite a few cars in my lifetime, but this one has been my favorite. I haven't had a single problem with it (it's a 2000 GLS V-6), and I just love the sunroof and the feel of the leather seats. The quiet and smooth ride have made road trips a real pleasure. In fact, just a few months ago, we drove more than 3000 miles on a road trip and my car achieved an impressive 27-28 mpg - even with the Air on and driving between 60-80 mph! I also get a lot of compliments on the looks of the car, especially since I replaced the stock wheels with some shiny 16 inch chrome ones. Thanks for letting me share!

I drove the 4 banger 1999 Sonata and decided to buy the 1999 GLS V6. It's quirky, reliable, and still fun to drive some 5 years later. Although it did go back to the dealer for warranty repairs early in its life (including a replacement transmission shipped in from Korea in 2000), it's still going strong. The only negative experience I had was with the dealer, as some dealers tend to overprice the car, making it more expensive than lesser Accords. My advice is to play hardball and negotiate for a better deal.

I'm glad to hear that you had a great experience with your GLS V6 DOHC car! Despite the normal wear and tear that comes with a 60+ K car, it's great to hear that you haven't had any serious problems with it. The suspensions are still more comfortable than some new cars I've ridden in, and the driver's seat is perfect for long drives. It's great to hear that you've taken it on long drives to other states without any issues. It sounds like you really love your car!
