2001 Hyundai Sonata problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 2001 Hyundai Sonata problems
The Hyundai Sonata, produced since 1985, is a popular midsize sedan known for its reliability and affordability. However, certain model years have been associated with specific problems based on complaints from owners.
For the 2001 Hyundai Sonata, one common issue reported is corroded suspension mounting points, frames, and sub-frames, which may cause the lower control arm to detach from the sub-frame. This issue led to a recall in 2009, affecting certain 2001-2004 Sonatas.
Another problem that has affected various model years, including 2011-2013, is a seatbelt linkage that’s not properly connected to the pretensioner. This issue can increase the risk of injury during a collision or other road accidents, as the detached linkage may not be able to restrain the passenger. Hyundai recalled certain Sonata models in 2017 to install external wire filter kits to address this issue and installed warning labels on affected vehicles to prevent future detachment.
Engine failure has also been a commonly reported problem in 2011, 2012, and 2013 Hyundai Sonatas. Many drivers complained that their engines seized up after hearing knocking noises upon acceleration, leading to a loss of power, brakes, and steering. This issue resulted in a class action lawsuit against Hyundai in 2016, where the automaker paid a settlement fee of $8.5 million. The settlement covered engine repair and replacement, towing expenses, and rental fees of the replacement cars for the owners of affected 2011-2014 Sonatas with 2.0- or 2.4-liter Theta II engines.
In 2012 Hyundai Sonatas, many owners experienced problems shifting their gears due to a faulty speed sensor. This issue caused vehicles to grind, shudder, and produce clunking noises when shifting from park to drive. Some owners even reported having no gear selection display on the dashboard or gear shift.
Steering issues have also been widely reported in 2011 Hyundai Sonatas, with the most common complaint being a steering wheel that clicks and wobbles when turning due to a faulty steering wheel column coupling.
While these issues have been reported, it is important to note that the Hyundai Sonata has a 4.0 out of 5.0 reliability rating and is ranked fifth out of 24 midsize cars by RepairPal. The annual repair and maintenance costs for the Sonata are below average, amounting to less than $500, while its competitors average $600 plus labor costs.
Is 2001 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Desirable, safe and well equipped, Sonata is perfect for hauling the family around town. If you're still not convinced that the Sonata could lure you away from that bare-bones Camry, Accord or Passat you've been salivating over, go drive one. You'll be surprised by what you discover.
What is the common problem of Hyundai Sonata?
Old and new Sonata model years had similar issues with their timing chain tensioner, which produced rattling noises upon engine startup. Many owners also reported a broken timing belt, which damaged the crankshaft position sensor.
What was a bad year for Hyundai Sonata?
A Hyundai Sonata engine failure lawsuit accuses Hyundai of manufacturing defective engines in model year 2011-2012 Sonatas. The plaintiff alleges Hyundai knew when the connecting rod bearings start to fail, metal debris from the bearings is sent throughout the engine through contaminated engine oil.
Is Sonata a good car?
While the Sonata's road manners don't impress us as much as the Honda Accord's, its high style quotient and value-oriented packaging make it a great choice among family sedans—and a great addition to our 2024 Editors' Choice list—nonetheless.

SUSPENSION,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-30
- VIN: KMHWF35V11A
- Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: RECENTLY I HAD A SITUATION WHERE I WAS DRIVING ON COUNTY ROAD WAY AND MY CAR SUDDENLY COLLAPSED AND CAME TO AN IMMEDIATE STOP. TO SAY THE LEAST, I WAS A LITTLE SHOOK UP. I GOT OUT THE CAR AND NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE WHEEL HAD LODGED AGAINST THE WHEEL WELL. THE CAR WOULD GO INTO GEAR BUT IT WAS MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE SO I TURNED IT OFF. A DRIVER OF A GREEN SEDAN CAR WAS BEHIND ME AND I WAS TRYING TO WAVE HER AROUND ME BUT SHE STOPPED AND ASSISTED ME INTO GETTING MY CAR OFF THE STREET BY PUSHING MY CAR WHILE IT WAS IN NEUTRAL. I AM ONLY TELLING YOU THIS BECAUSE THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY CAR BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. I WAS TOLD BY HYUNDAI THOMPSON THAT MY CAR WOULD NOT START AFTER IT WAS TOWED THERE. I WENT THERE THE NEXT DAY AND THE CAR DID START BUT IT WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR WHICH WAS A SURPRISE TO ME. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY MAY HAVE TO CHECK THE TRANSMISSION AND TALK TO YOU TO SEE IF THAT DAMAGE WOULD BE COVER UNDER THE RECALL FOR REPLACING THE ENGINE CRADLE. AFTER HYUNDAI THOMPSON REPAIRED MY CAR I HAD TO TAKE IT BACK FOR A ROARING NOISE CAUSED BY THE WHEEL BEARING IN THE WHEEL THAT JAMMED AGAINST THE WHEEL WELL WHEN THE AXLE SNAPPED OFF THE SUBFRAME. THEY ALSO COULD NOT PREFORM A WHEEL ALIGNMENT. I ALSO TOOK IT FOR A SAFETY INSPECTION AND IT FAILED DUE TO SOME ITEMS I FEEL ARE RELATED TO THE REPAIR OF REPLACING THE SUBFRAME LIKE THE WHEEL BEARING, THE FRONT END ALIGNMENT, BOTH FRONT UPPER CONTROL ARMS AND THE OUTER TIE RODS MISSING COTTER KEYS. I WANT TO KNOW MY RIGHTS CONCERNING THIS RECALL AND I ALSO WANT MY CAR IN THE DRIVING CONDITION BEFORE THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED. CASE # 15551136 WITH HYUNDAI.

- Date Of Incident: 2018-07-22
- VIN: KMHWF35V41A
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: CONTROL ARM COMPLETELY SEPARATED/ BROKE FROM THE SUBFRAME. CALLED HYUNDAI AS MECHANIC SAID THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED UNDER A RECALL THAT CAME OUT SEVERAL YEARS AGO FOR "BECAUSE OF A POTENTIAL CORROSION RISK INVOLVING THE FRONT SUB-FRAME...CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME. IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVER POWER TO THE WHEELS. THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL." "SEPARATION OF THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH" THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO MY 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER YESTERDAY AND FORTUNATELY SHE DID NOT CRASH AS SHE WAS NOT IN A POPULATED AREA, BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE. WHY IS THIS PARTICULAR 2001 HYUNDAI SONATA NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. IT NEEDS TO BE COVERED AND COVERED ASAP. PLEASE ASSIST. VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT COLUMBIA FAMILY AUTO CARE IN JESSUP MD 301-362-0777

HE CONTACTED AN ATTORNEY FOR CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT TO BE STARTED D/T SAFETY ISSUES TO PREVENT DEATH TO OTHERS & REPAIR FRAME TO ROB CAREY AT ROB.CAREY @ATT.NET & [email protected]. FROM 2006- UNTIL 2009 DURING ROUTINE OIL CHANGES, I ASKED KERRY HYUNDAI IN ALEXANDRIA, KY TO CHECK MY FRAME D/T VISUAL RUST & ABOUT RECALL. HYUNDAI FINALLY ADMITTED AFTER MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS DURING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE IN A LETTER TO ME ON 6/24/09 THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON 4/16/09 AND MY FRAME TO BE REPLACED. 8/15/16 I LOST CONTROL OF MY 2001 SONATA, HYUNDAI WHILE DRIVING ON EXPRESSWAY DURING RUSH HOUR D/T MAJOR CORROSIVE ISSUES CAUSING RIGHT REAR TIRE ROD TO BREAK. I DID TWO 360 DEGREE TURNS FROM FAST LANE TO SLOW LANE. GRACE OF GOD I DIDN'T CRASH OR CAUSE ANY ACCIDENTS. FILLED REPORT WITH HYUNDAI DEALER & CORPORATION 8/16/16. CORPORATION STATED THAT THERE IS CORROSIVE SETTLEMENT FOR FRONT FRAME AND ANOTHER FOR THE REAR FRAME. HAS BEEN TWO WEEKS AND HYUNDAI CORPORATION HAS NOT CONTACTED ME BACK, BUT STATED COMPLIANT ALONE WITH PICTURES TAKEN BY DEALER HAS BEEN SENT TO "REGIONAL AGENT". MANAGER OF SERVICE DEPARTMENT FROM DEALERSHIP AT KERRY HYUNDAI ALEXANDRIA, KY, JEFF, STATED "THE MATTER IS OUT OF HIS HANDS AND REPRESENTATIVE FROM HYUNDAI CORPORATION IS TO HANDLE MATTER. ALSO, JEFF, MANAGER OF SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT KERRY HYUNDAI, STATED "DAMAGE TO FRAME COST MORE THAN WHAT CARE IS WORTH". MECHANIC AT KERRY HYUNDAI STATED THAT "HYUNDAI HAS MAJOR ISSUE WITH FRAMES, THIS IS THE THIRD ONE THIS MONTH, OF AUGUST, THAT HAS COME IN D/T CORROSIVE DEFECTS, AND ONE OF THE CARS WAS ONLY THREE YEARS OLD". PLEASE DO SOMETHING BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED. LIFE IS A PRECIOUS GIFT AND NO MONETARY AMOUNT CAN REPLACEMENT IT.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-04-26
- VIN: KMHWF25S71A
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: MY CAR HAS A REAR RUST PROBLEM THAT HAS LEFT THE CAR UNDRIVEABLE. THE SUPPORT FOR THE WHEEL HAS RUSTED THROUGH AND THE REAR WHEELS ARE TILTING IN. I DID LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR AS IT SWAYED FOR ONE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO THE OTHER LANE AND BACK. MY SPEED WAS ABOUT 45 MPH ON A TWO LANE ROAD WITH A SPEAD LIMIT OF 45 TO 55. WHEN I WOULD HIT A BUMP IN THE ROAD THE CAR SWERVED UNCONTROLABLY THE RUST IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM THAT OUR GOVERNMENT IS IGNORING. I HAVE HAD THE FRONT OF THE CAR IN FOR THE ORIGINAL RECALL FOR THE FRONT SUBFRAME. DID YOU KNOW THAT THIS RECALL ALLOWS THE MECHANIC TO DRILL HOLES IN THE SUBFRAME TO HELP THE MOISTER ESCAPE. SOUNDS LIKE A TEMPORARY FIX TO A SERIOUS PROBLEM BECAUSE THE DESIGN DID NOT ALLOW FOR MOISTURE PROBLEMS. YET THE PROBLEM IS ROAD SALT ACCORDING TO THE ORIGINAL LAW SUIT. BUT THEN WHY DRILL HOLES IF THE MOISTURE IS COMING FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE HOLES ARE NOT DRILLED FOR ANY REASON EXCEPT TO ALLOW MOISTURE TO ESCAPE FROM A POORLY DESIGNED SUB FRAME ASSEMBLY. HYUNDAI REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE CARS INHERENT PROBLEM. WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT THIS PROBLEM BEFORE MORE PEOPLE GET TERRIFIED OR DIE. REALLY THIS NEEDS TO GET DONE BY OUR GOVERNMENT. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. LIKE THE PINTO GAS TANK DESIGN.

SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-10
- VIN: KMHWF35V01A
- Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING THE CAR THE WHEEL AND ASSEMBLY BROKE FREE FROM THE FRAME OF THE CAR WHICH WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED AND DROPPED THE CAR TO THE GROUND PUSHED THE WHEEL ASSEMBLY WHEEL WELL. AFTER RESEARCHING THE MAKE AND MODEL THEIR IS A RECALL PERTAINING TO THIS ISSUE BUT ONLY APPLIES TO THE SALT BELT. MY CAR WAS ORIGINALLY SOLD AND OPERATED IN VIRGINIA FOR 7 YEARS. THIS ISSUE WITH THE SUB FRAME IS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE AS THE RECALL BUT DUE TO THE CAR NOT BEING TITLED IN THE SALT BELT, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS DRIVEN THROUGH THE SO CALLED SALT BELT, HYUNDAI IS SAYING IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I BELIEVE ALL CARS THAT EXPERIENCE THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY AS IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. I WAS LUCKY I WASN'T GOING FAST AS IT COULD HAVE JEOPARDIZED MY LIFE OR ANYONE ELSE'S THAT WAS TRAVELING ON THE ROAD. *TR
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

ALSO AT THE SAME TIME THE CAR WOULD BANG INTO GEAR FROM PARK AND INTO REVERSE. I WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED NEW OUT OF THE SHOWROOM WITH 10 MILES ON IT AND 6 MONTHS LATER A NEW TRANSMISSION. ( WELL WE WERE TOLD AT THE TIME IT WAS BRAND NEW, I HAVE SINCE LEARNED THAT IT WAS A REBUILT) SHAME ON THE DEALER FOR LYING TO CUSTOMERS. THE CAR DID OK TILL ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO. THE CAR WILL DECELERATE AND I HAVE TO DO WHAT I STATED ABOVE. THEN CANT GET OUT OF PARK AND THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES. A NEW BRAKE SWITCH WAS PUT IN AND THE CAR WAS FINE FOR 7 FULL DAYS AND ON THE 8TH DAY SAME THING. SO BACK WE GO TO THE DEALERS AND THEY ARE REALLY RUDE AND NOT HAPPY TO SEE ME AT ALL . ( I DON'T' WANT TO SEE THEM EITHER) I WAS TOLD SAME PROBLEM AND ANOTHER SWITCH HAS BEEN PUT IN THIS IS THE THIRD ONE. THE OTHER ISSUE IS WE ARE NOT BEING NOTIFIED OF RECALLS. AND THE DEALERSHIP IS SO RUDE. WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER ONE. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-11-30
- VIN: 5NPEC4AC0BH
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: HYUNDAI SONATA 2011 PUSH BUTTON START. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE. YESTERDAY I WENT INTO MY CAR AND PROCEEDED TO START MY CAR. I HAD TO PUSH THE START BUTTON THREE TIMES BEFORE ACTUALLY STARTED UP. THIS HAPPENED TWICE WITHIN 2 HOURS. 5 DAYS PRIOR MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP FOR THE RECALL ON THE STOP LAMP SWITCH. AN EXISTING RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 13V113000) INDICATES THAT FOR THE 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA THE STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. THEY ,THE DEALERSHIP, PERFORMED THE SERVICE AND REPLACED THE STOPLAMP SWITCH. AS RESULT MY CAR IS EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT SWITCH POINT CONTACT WITH THE PUSH-BUTTON START FEATURE. THIS IS CRAZY. *TR
SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-09-21
- VIN: KMHWF25S51A
- Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS
- Summary: I WAS TRYING TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT, AS I SWERVED THE CAR FISH TAILED. THE DRIVER SIDE REAR TIRE HIT THE CURB, AT WHICH POINT THE TIRE ACTUALLY BUCKLED UNDER THE CAR. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A SHOP. WHEN THE MECHANIC LOOKED AT THE CAR AT FIRST WE BELIEVED WE ONLY NEEDED THE REAR TIRE ASSEMBLY. WE THEN DISCOVERED THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE SUB FRAME ASSEMBLY. HE TOLD ME THE SUB FRAME WAS RUSTED AND ROTTED AND HE BELIEVE THAT WAS WHY THERE WAS SO MUCH DAMAGE. THEN I WAS TOLD BY A FRIEND THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE 2001 HYUNDAI SONATA SUB FRAME. I LATER FOUND OUT THAT IT WAS THE FRONT SUB FRAME. WHEN READING THE DESCRIPTION OF WHAT WAS OCCURRING IN THE RECALL OF THE FRONT SUB FRAME LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THE SAME MAYBE OCCURRING TO THE REAR SUB FRAME.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-08-30
- VIN: KMHWF35V71A
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: I TOOK MY 2001 HYUNDAI SONATA GLS IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE. THEY CALLED ME TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO TELL ME THAT THE CROSS MEMBER ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WAS RUSTED BADLY AND MAY BE CRACKED. THEY TOOK PICTURES AND CONTACTED HYUNDAI TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM, AS THEY HAD "NEVER" SEEN IT BEFORE. HYUNDAI HAS TOLD THEM I AM ON MY OWN FOR REPAIRING IT. RIDICULOUS, THERE IS A RECALL FOR CARS JUST ACROSS THE RIVER IN MN FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM. I SHUDDER TO THINK WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD I BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE DRIVING 75 MPH AND IT BROKE. HOW ABOUT A LITTLE RESPONSIBILITY HYUNDAI?? I HAVE HAD THIS CAR IN FOR ALL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AS REQUIRED, SO IT IS NOT NEGLIGENCE ON OUR PART. *TR
STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-08-07
- VIN: KMHWF35V31A
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,TIRES,WHEELS
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING AND WITHIN 15 MINUTES MY HYUNDAI RIPPED THROUGH 2 TIRES. LUCKILY I FIGURED SOMETHING WAS UP AND WAS TAKING BACK ROADS WHEN THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED PARTS OF THE RUBBER FROM THE TIRES WERE IN THE ROAD. I HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AND APPARENTLY THE CRADLE SUB FRAME WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED APART CAUSING THE ALIGNMENT AND TIRE ISSUES. I AM IN THE SALT BELT STATES SO IT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE RUST/CORROSION RECALL 089. I UNDERSTAND IT HAS MANY MILES BUT IT WAS RUNNING REALLY WELL UNTIL THIS AND SHOULD BE COVERED IN THE RECALL. *TR
2001 Hyundai Sonata recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2001 Hyundai Sonata.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.
- Consequence: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

I've owned the car for two weeks and so far, I haven't found anything wrong with it. If I ever do, I'm confident that my 100,000 mile warranty will cover it.

When I was looking for a family car, I was initially sceptical about Hyundai. However, after considering Honda and Toyota, which were out of our price range, we found that the Hyundai Sonata was the perfect fit for us. The great warranty was definitely a factor in our decision. I have now owned this car for almost 3 years and it has been very reliable, with only a few minor exceptions. The Sonata drives like a Camry and is very comfortable to drive. Although it's not a performance sedan, it could use a little more horsepower out of the 2.4 liter engine, but you could always opt for the V6. Overall, I rate this car as outstanding.

I purchased the gold trim package, V6 Sonata GLS and I have been absolutely thrilled with it since the day I bought it. My co-workers and friends have all complimented me on the vehicle, and it's easy to see why. It's very similar to the 2003 model, with the exception of the different grill. I'm not sure why the 2003 model supposedly gets 1 less mile to the gallon, but I think it might be due to the automatic climate control feature. With the Sonata GLS, there's now another quality import in town to compete with Toyota!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your vehicle! It sounds like it's been very reliable for you, and the fact that you're getting such good gas mileage is definitely a plus. I'm also impressed that you've been able to haul so much cargo with the back seat folded down. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I really love this car. My Fiancee got it for me as a present to replace my old Nissan Altima. It has plenty of room for our kids, is great on mileage, and the sunroof is a lot of fun on sunny days in Florida. I would definitely recommend this car to anyone!

The car looks good and drives well. I had to replace the battery after almost 3 years, and the warranty lived up to its promise. My main concern is the resale value. If you are considering buying one, I would recommend buying it used. We are currently preparing to trade it in, and we are quite disappointed with the trade-in value.

My 6 cylinder Sonata was reliable for the first 30,000 miles. However, after a tune up, I experienced issues with the disc brakes making noise, a faulty sensor that required costly repairs, a slipping transmission, and power windows that required repairs from Hyundai with a cheap plastic piece. Although I may have driven the car aggressively, the reliability of the vehicle is subpar. In comparison, my Ford Tempo has outlasted the Sonata so far. Thank you for considering my experience with the Sonata.
