2005 Hyundai Sonata problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

SUSPENSION,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-27
- VIN: KMHWF25S35A
- Components: SUSPENSION,ENGINE
- Summary: My car's engine cradle, cross member or subframe is rusted out and the OEM replacement for my VIN number won't fit it correctly I'm getting really upset because this could be dangerous for me and my two young kids. I've already paid the mechanic $600 for the replacement part when it really only costs $450 at the most and the two he has ordered before have both been either too big and it says that it is the correct replacement part. What is going on?!!! If something isn't fixed soon and something happens to me or my kids there is going to be a lawsuit.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-30
- VIN: KMHWF35H45A
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I took my car to the mechanic for a “once over” before driving from New Jersey to North Carolina. This car has only 41,000 original miles on it as we bought it new in 2005. Upon inspection, the mechanic came back with certain repairs that are needed due to age; but he was extremely concerned about a severe safety issue that the subframe had rotted out and needed to be replaced. This is a known corrosion issue with other years of manufacture for this model. There was a class action suit for this specific issue for 1999 to 2004 Sonatas. The subframe threatens to collapse from rust at any time and is an extreme hazard to the driver, passengers, and others on the road. There was absolutely no warning of this issue prior to this inspection, making it even more dangerous as it affects many drivers who are unaware of the issue.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-02
- VIN: KMHWF35H15A
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Severely rusted out and corroded front subframe, only noticed it on accident very recently, and my car is the last year of a generation that was recalled for this very issue within the Salt Belt- I live right at the bottom outskirts of the Salt Belt in NKY, and my car is the only year not recalled for subframe corrosion. It's bad and I'm freaked out and can't afford it unless I figure out how to do it myself without prematurely dying due to a dropped engine or something similar (premature because if I don't get it fixed soon I reckon that fate isn't too far off)
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-03
- VIN: KMHWF25H35A
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Clunking sound when turning corners, took to mechanic, sub frame rotted through. Unsafe to drive.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-15
- VIN: kmhwf25hx5a
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: The contact owns a 2005 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at 45 MPH, the vehicle rode over a pothole which caused a fracture in the subframe. The contact had taken the vehicle to several independent mechanics and was informed that the failure was caused by severe salt corrosion. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed her that there were no recalls associated with the VIN. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 134,000. Consumer stated part# FC112 is used for 2003, 2004 AND 2005. 2003 AND 2004 of the same make and model are already recalled for the same issue with the subframe having rust due to excessive salt exposure, but SOMEHOW the 2005 which is EXACTLY the same part and problem has not been recalled.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-23
- VIN: kmhwf35h65a
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: My mechanic just took a picture of the subframe of the car which is almost completely rusted through. He said that this is extremely dangerous and that if it was to break while driving the car, I would loose control. I have seen numerous complaints about this on the 2005 Hyundai Sonata on the internet which makes me think this is a common issue.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-10
- VIN: kmhwf25h55a
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Upon inspecting the undercarriage of my vehicle found the right side of Front Subframe Cradle Suspension rotted almost completely through. When researching for issues pertaining to this model found a TSA was issued , after a lawsuit in California, for the years prior and after my vehicle. The damage is concurrent with the TSA bulletin but excluded. How does a manufacturer whom obviously is aware of an ongoing issue allow so many people, families and children, drive and risk their lives on our public roadways. Is their a subclass recall that will aid those like myself take corrective action.

- Summary: "TAKATA RECALL" I THOUGHT I NEEDED A NEW INNER TIE ROD ON MY 2005 HYUNDAI SONATA. WHEN I WENT TO THE SHOP THE MECHANIC TOLD ME YOU HAVE BIGGER PROBLEMS. " YOUR SUB-FRAME ON THIS CAR IS RUSTED OUT AND THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE." WITH THAT INFORMATION, I CALLED THE HYUNDAI SUPPORT NUMBER, THEY GAVE ME A REFERENCE NUMBER, I THEN WENT TO THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO GET AN ESTIMATE FOR REPAIRS AND TO SEE IF HYUNDAI WOULD REPAIR THE SUBFRAME. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT HYUNDAI CORPORATION REFUSED TO PAY ANY GOODWILL MONEY TO FIX THE CAR BUT THEY DID TELL ME, " OUR ADVICE: " IS TO NOT DRIVE THE CAR, IT IS UNSAFE." THIS IS NOT A MECHANICAL ISSUE THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND EVEN THOUGH I DID NOT FIND ANY RECALLS FOR 2005 SUBFRAME, IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT HYUNDAI KNEW THEY DID HAVE A SLEW OF SONATAS THAT HAD A SERIOUS SUBFRAME CORROSION PROBLEM. IN MY BIT OF RESEARCH, THERE HAS BEEN A DEFINITE PROBLEM WITH THE SONATAS AND THE SUBFRAME ROTTING OUT, ALL DIFFERENT YEARS AND MILEAGE AND AGE THAT HYUNDAI DID REPAIR THE CARS THAT I FOUND ON EDMONDS.COM AND ON THE INTERNET.

My car is fantastic! It has all the features of a more expensive vehicle, but without the hefty price tag. The 100,000 mile warranty is amazing. When my fuel pump died, the company sent a tow truck and fixed the issue at no cost to me. I really wish my wife had bought one instead of that Ford Focus.
-
I test drove every car in this class, and none of them drove as smooth and quiet as the Sonata. The Sonata excels in this area with a very quiet ride, despite one of the pitfalls of front wheel drive being road noise. It's important to note that the Sonata is an excellent vehicle and a real bargain. It's time for Consumer Reports to consider the Sonata as a top contender in this class. Thank you for considering the Sonata!
-
This car has been incredibly reliable. It has never broken down and I have never had to take it to the dealer for unnecessary service. I have put over 75,000 miles on it and it still runs like a dream. The mileage is also fantastic, getting 34 mpg on the highway. Whoever ends up with this car will be getting a great vehicle!
-
My wife and I purchased a car with 15,000 miles on it for $14K. We have only had to replace the oil at regular service times. My wife absolutely loves it! She opens the sunroof and lets the wind blow through her hair while blasting the stereo. The car handles great, even from the passenger's front seat (mine). Sometimes, if I'm lucky, I even get to drive it. We are planning to trade in our Buick Roadmaster for a new Sonata, maybe an '08 or '09. The new V6's have 50 plus HP, so I know we will be happy with it. The interior is even nicer and roomier, and it gets 30 MPG, which is perfect for my wife's lead foot.

I bought this car for $3,000 during the COVID pandemic from an experienced dealer who has been selling cars for 40 years. At the time of purchase, it had 150k miles on it. Over the past year, I have driven it for about 50,000 miles. Overall, I would rate this car 4/5, as I have only encountered two minor issues. The check engine light is on and throwing a “system too lean code” at roughly 170k-180k miles. This means that the car is using a little more gas than it should, but it's not a major issue. If you don't get it fixed, you'll have to rev the car a little bit whenever you go to get gas at the pump. It's a bit annoying, but it's livable and doesn't seem to impact the car negatively. This is a great car that has exceeded my expectations. I believe it will easily go 300,000 miles with just regular oil changes. I'm very impressed with this car despite those two minor issues. It still runs and drives well, even though I'm rough on it. I highly recommend it. I plan to drive this car to 400,000 miles, and if I can get that many miles out of it, I will personally go buy a brand new 2022 Hyundai Sonata highest trim level. That's how much I like this car. If you're thinking about buying it and the price is right, I'd say go for it. It's comfortable, stylish, and makes sense for a 2005 model. It even has a removable ashtray and a sunroof. By the way, if you mess with the shifter knob, the key may get stuck in the ignition permanently in the ACC position. To fix this, put the car in park and twist the whole shifter knob off the base until it's completely removed. Then, you can get the key out of the ignition or just go on Amazon and buy a replacement for anywhere from $20-$30 bucks.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. While I was initially attracted by the best warranty, I have found that after 2.5 years, the car has not held up as well as I had hoped. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the car's reliability, including dead batteries, a worn-out clutch, and various other parts that have needed to be replaced. While some of these items were covered by the warranty, I have still had to spend a significant amount of money on service and repairs. Despite these challenges, I remain happy with the car's look and performance. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my feedback.

1- The dashboard hardware seems to be falling apart. 2- Despite regular maintenance by the dealer, the tires are wearing excessively and need to be replaced after only 31000 miles. 3- Unfortunately, I have experienced three flat tires. 4- The windshield wiper mechanism has a tendency to fail often. 5- The tail lights seem to burn out frequently, this is the second time it has happened. 6- The automatic side view mirrors move, but not enough. 7- While I have had some issues with my Hyundai, I appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback and hope that these issues can be addressed in future models.

My husband and I bought a Hyundai thinking it would be a great purchase, but unfortunately, we have had some issues with it. After 2 months of owning the car, it needed a new timing belt, radiator, and engine. Additionally, we have noticed some rattling under 3 RPM's, which has been a bit frustrating. We have brought it to numerous dealerships, but unfortunately, none have been able to fix the problem. We are hoping to find a solution soon, but overall, we still appreciate the features and benefits of the car.

I recently had some issues with my Kia Sephia and later with my Hyundai Sonata. Despite my initial hope that these were just flukes, I unfortunately experienced similar problems with both vehicles. While I appreciate a good deal, I have decided that I will not be purchasing from these brands again.
