Common 1996 Plymouth Breeze problems
The 1996 Plymouth Breeze is a midsize car that was designed as a lower-priced option in the midsize market, sharing its platform with the Dodge Stratus and Chrysler Cirrus. While the car was praised for its affordability, spacious interior, and competitive equipment, there were some common problems reported by owners.
- Steering Issues: One of the most frequently reported problems with the 1996 Plymouth Breeze is related to steering. The steering system may experience difficulties, which can negatively impact the driving experience. This issue can be caused by various factors, including worn-out components or improper maintenance.
- Spark Plug Tube Seals Failure: Another common issue reported by Plymouth Breeze owners is the failure of spark plug tube seals, which can lead to misfires and poor fuel efficiency. This problem typically arises due to the seals' deterioration over time, allowing air and fuel to leak out of the combustion chamber.
- Engine and Transmission Performance: The Plymouth Breeze's engine and transmission performance have been criticized by some owners. The base engine, a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, produces only 132 horsepower, which may be insufficient for some driving situations. Additionally, the optional 4-speed automatic transmission has been reported to sometimes shift harshly or hesitate, affecting the overall driving experience.
- Suspension Tuning: In 1999, the Plymouth Breeze received revised suspension tuning to provide a smoother ride. However, some owners have reported that the suspension tuning may still be too firm, leading to a less comfortable driving experience on rough roads.
- Noise and Vibration: Some Plymouth Breeze owners have reported issues with noise and vibration, particularly from the engine and drivetrain. These issues can be caused by various factors, including worn-out components, improper maintenance, or design flaws.
- Interior Quality: While the Plymouth Breeze's interior is generally considered spacious and well-equipped, some owners have reported issues with interior quality, including cheap-feeling materials and poor fit and finish.
- Lack of Power: The Plymouth Breeze's base engine has been criticized for its lack of power, particularly when compared to competitors' offerings. This can make passing and merging more challenging, especially on highways.
- Build Quality: Some Plymouth Breeze owners have reported issues with build quality, including rattles, squeaks, and other noises that can be distracting and annoying.
- Reliability: While the Plymouth Breeze is generally considered to be a reliable vehicle, some owners have reported issues with reliability, including electrical problems, engine issues, and transmission failures.
- Fuel Efficiency: The Plymouth Breeze's fuel efficiency has been criticized by some owners, particularly when compared to competitors' offerings. The base engine's fuel efficiency is relatively low, which can lead to higher fuel costs over time.
- Resale Value: The Plymouth Breeze's resale value has been criticized by some owners, particularly when compared to competitors' offerings. The car's low resale value can make it a less attractive option for those looking to purchase a used vehicle.
In summary, the 1996 Plymouth Breeze is a midsize car that was designed to be a lower-priced option in the midsize market. While the car was praised for its affordability, spacious interior, and competitive equipment, there were some common problems reported by owners, including steering issues, spark plug tube seals failure, engine and transmission performance, suspension tuning, noise and vibration, interior quality, lack of power, build quality, reliability, fuel efficiency, and resale value.

Oldsmobile (1897-2004): Established in 1897, Oldsmobile faced declining sales and was eventually phased out by General Motors to streamline its brand portfolio.
Why did Oldsmobile go out of business?
Why did they stop making Oldsmobile? General Motors (GM) stopped making the Oldsmobile due to overall mismanagement of the brand that resulted in Oldsmobile going from the #3 best-selling brand in the 1980s selling over a million units, to being an afterthought with consumers in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Why did Plymouth cars fail?
The demise of Plymouth was due to lackluster cars that were similar to other models offered by other brands in the group, although Chrysler Group had a few tricks up their sleeves with the new PT Cruiser being planned to revive the Plymouth brand.
Why did Plymouth stop?
It's all about the money. As staid as it may sound, the answer has nothing to do with corporate intrigue, malfeasance from competitors, or even cars so bad it killed the brand, even if the Plymouth Prowler didn't help much. Plymouth went the way of the dodo for one simple reason: Money.
Was Plymouth a success or a failure?
Though Plymouth would never develop as robust an economy as later settlements—such as Massachusetts Bay Colony—agriculture, fishing and trading made the colony self-sufficient within five years after it was founded. Many other European settlers followed in the Pilgrims' footsteps to New England.

- Summary: I PURCHASED MY 1996 PLYMOUTH BREEZE IN APRIL OF 1998 WITH 33,000 MILES ON IT AND IT CURRENTLY HAS 115,000 MILES ON IT. THE INITIAL SIGNS OF PROBLEMS BEGIN AT 50,000 MILES WITH AN OIL LEAK NO ONE COULD SEEM TO FIX (NOT EVEN THE DEALERSHIP). WITHIN A SPAN OF 82, 000 MILES: I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE HEAD GASKET TWICE AT 54,000 AND 113,000 ($1000), I HAVE HAD TWO MAJOR TUNE-UPS AT 60,000 AND 92,000 MILES ($500), I HAVE HAD ALL SENSORS REPLACED AT 101,000 MILES ($1500), I HAVE HAD THREE MAJOR BRAKE JOBS WITHIN 18 MONTHS ($1800), I HAD TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR ($250), I HAD TO HAVE THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACED AT 75,000 MILES ($350), I HAD TO HAVE A NEW TRANSMISSION AT 95,000 MILES ($1500), IVE HAD NUMEROUS REPAIRS BASED ON THE READOUTS FROM THE COMPUTER ($600+), REPLACED THE OIL PAN GASKET BUT IT STILL LEAKS ($150) THE WINDOW SEALS LEAK WHEN IT RAINS (NEVER TRIED TO FIX) (THIS CAR SAT IN MY DRIVEWAY ALMOST ALL OF 2002 BECAUSE I COULD NOT AFFORD THE REPAIRS) AFTER ALL OF MY FUTILE ATTEMPTS TO KEEP MY TRANSPORTATION OPERABLE, ITS CURRENTLY SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY WITH THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS: IT CUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE REVS UP AND DOWN WHEN IDLE, THERE IS A SEVERE OIL LEAK THAT NO ONE CAN SEEM TO FIX, THE ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON NO MATTER WHAT REPAIRS ARE DONE, THE FACTORY RADIO, THE SPEEDOMETER, AND THE MILEAGE GAUGE, NO LONGER WORK. THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PICKUP WHEN DRIVING UP HILLS, WHEN YOU TURN THE AC ON THERE IS AN UNBEARABLE HORRIBLE RATTLING NOISE AND THE CAR LOSES AN OBSCENE AMOUNT OF POWER AND FEELS AS THOUGH ITS GOING TO CUT OFF, THERES A SCOWLING NOISE WHEN YOU TURN THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT TO RIGHT IT TAKES 15 MINUTES IN ORDER FOR THE HEATER TO BLOW OUT WARM AIR. AND I STILL OWE $6,000 ON THIS VEHICLE. *JB

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-01-15
- VIN: 1P3EJ46C3TN
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT
- Summary: I ACQUIRED A 1996 PLYMOUTH BREEZE IN MARCH OF 2002. THE DAY AFTER I GOT THE CAR, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON. SINCE THEN, THE LIGHT HAS COME ONE A TOTAL OF 4 TIMES. EACH TIME IT HAS BEEN FIXED OR LOOKED AT, THE O2 SENSOR WAS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. ON HALLOWEEN 2002, I TOOK MY CAR IN TO GET A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE AND TO FIND OUT THE CAUSE OF A TICKING SOUND. THE AUTO CENTER (THAT WAS DOING MY OIL CHANGE) SAID IT WAS A ROD BEARING, BUT WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THAT IT WAS A FLYWHEEL. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AND 2 DAYS AFTER I PICK UP THE CAR, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT COMES ON FOR THE 4TH TIME. I AM TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND PRAYING THAT THIS IS THE LAST TIME I WILL HAVE TO MAKE ANY REPAIRS FOR THE SAME THING!!!
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-04-15
- VIN: 1P3EJ46C6TN
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VISIBILITY
- Summary: THE HEAD GASKET WAS REALLY THE PROBLEM THAT I HAVE THE BIGGEST BEEF ABOUT. I HAVE HAD AN OIL LEAK SINCE AT LEAST AUGUST 2002 AND THE MECHANIC THAT I'VE BEEN TAKING MY CAR TO HAS REPLACED THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH TWICE AND MOST RECENTLY THE CAM SHAFT SWITCH. AT THE LAST REPAIR, HE INDICATED THAT I HAD A TORN HEAD GASKET, A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH MY MODEL OF CAR. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER AND THEN CONTACTED CHRYSLER ABOUT SOME MONETARY ASSISTANCE WITH THIS REPAIR. CHRYSLER CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM WITH THE DEALER AND THEN DID NOTHING FOR TWO DAYS UNTIL I CALLED BACK AND FOUND OUT THAT THE DECISION RESTED IN THE REGIONAL MANAGER'S HANDS WHO WAS OUT OF TOWN ON VACATION FOR 4 MORE DAYS. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER AGAIN AND ESCALLATED THE DECISION THROUGH A FEW LEVELS OF MANAGEMENT AND FOUND THAT MY REQUEST HAD BEEN DENIED DUE TO THE AGE OF THE CAR AND ITS MILEAGE. THIS IRRITATES ME FOR SEVERAL REASONS. HEAD GASKETS ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE A MUCH LONGER LIFE SPAN THAT 72K MILES. THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED DEFECT WITH THE CAR I HAVE AND I FEEL THAT A RECALL IS IN ORDER. FROM WHAT I'VE READ ON THE INTERNET, MANY BREEZE/NEON OWNERS HAVE HAD SUCCESS CONVINCING CHRYSLER TO PAY FOR SOME OF THE REPAIR. I BROUGHT MY CAR IN ON TUESDAY NIGHT AND IT WASN'T UNTIL THE END OF THE DAY ON THURSDAY THAT CHRYSLER MADE THEIR DECISION. IN THE MEANTIME, THE MECHANIC DID NOT REPAIR THE PROBLEM BECAUSE HE WAS WAITING ON THE RESPONSE FROM CHRYSLER. HENCE, I WAS OUT OF THE USE OF MY CAR AN ADDITIONAL TWO DAYS. ADDITIONALLY, I'VE ALREADY INCURRED ABOUT $400 IN EXPENSES MOST LIKELY RELATED TO THIS HEAD GASKET FROM PREVIOUS REPAIRS TO MY OIL LEAK PROBLEM. IT'S A SHAME ALL THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE I WAS PRETTY PLEASED WITH THE CAR UP UNTIL I DISCOVERED THIS PROBLEM.

I received this car as a gift for my 16th birthday and I am still impressed with it even now that I am 18. Despite putting it through a lot of abuse due to my youth, it has held up remarkably well. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable vehicle with excellent fuel mileage and comfort. The only major repairs I had to do were control arms and ball joints, but that was due to my rough handling. As someone who has spent 4 years in automotive shop and grew up around cars, I can confidently say that this car is excellent. I would definitely buy another one!

I love the 5 speed manual with the 4 valves per cylinder engine. I average about 35 mpg overall. The only problem I had was the head gasket. This car saved me a lot of money and is fun to drive. It's a shame they don't make Plymouths anymore.

Your dad made a great choice when he bought this car 10 years ago with only 10000 miles on it. It's amazing that it's still running solidly at 118000 miles! As long as you keep up with regular maintenance, this car will last you a long time. Of course, like any car, it has had a few things break, but that's to be expected. Despite being a sedan, it's a good-looking car with an excellent interior. Even for tall people like you (6'8

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I absolutely love it and it runs great. I paid $5,200 for mine - it's a '96 and had 29,000 miles on it when I bought it. I know some people have had trouble with the head gasket, but luckily I haven't experienced any issues with it yet.

I bought a program car with 2000 miles. It's only been in the shop once in 6 years and starts even on the coldest days. I'm 6 feet tall and fit in just fine. I'm really happy with the value for money that I got.

The car has experienced several issues with the front end, including problems with tie rods, wheel bearings, and ball joints. Additionally, there have been issues with the head gasket, valve cover gasket, and cam seal gasket. Despite these challenges, I still love the car. However, it has required frequent repairs and is also showing signs of rusting.

Fine car, except the model I have has ABS, which has caused the brake pedal to lock creating a brake failure and potential for a serious accident. No shop has been able to diagnose the problem, so unfortunately I must get rid of it. It was a very good car, but did have its problems as well. Can't find a more ergonomic or roomy car for the money though. Just pass on ABS and you should be fine.

My Plymouth Breeze has been a reliable car for the past three years, having driven over 70,000 miles. Although I recently experienced some issues with the rear brakes and front end, I have been able to address them promptly. While I do need to add about two quarts of engine oil per month, the car has otherwise been running smoothly. Although the resale value may not be ideal, I am confident in the car's overall performance and reliability.

After bringing my lovely Breeze into my mechanic for the twelfth time, he suggested that it might be time to consider selling it. He explained that the cost of repairs could end up being more than the car is worth. In the end, I decided to give my little brother my 1990 Chevy Cavalier instead, which has only required routine maintenance. The Breeze, on the other hand, has had a few more issues. It's been burning oil, had two broken tie-rods, a leak in the transmission fluid, fried connections to the engine, and even some issues with the radio connections. Despite all of this, I'm still hopeful that we can get it running smoothly again soon.
