The Hyundai Excel (Korean: 현대 엑셀), also known as the Hyundai Pony, Hyundai Pony Excel, Hyundai Presto, Mitsubishi Precis, Hyundai X2 and Hyundai XL, is an automobile which was produced by Hyundai Motor Company from 1985 to 1999. It was the first front-wheel drive car produced by the South Korean manufacturer. The Excel range replaced the rear-wheel-drive Hyundai Pony.

Background

The Excel was based on the second generation of the Mitsubishi Mirage, but it received its own sheet metal design by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The Excel was available in three- or five-door hatchback and four-door sedan models. The Excel was the first Hyundai car to be exported to the United States.

The Excel was available with either a manual or automatic transmission mated to a four-cylinder engine aspirated by a carburetor or fuel injection system, depending on market and model year.

Originally, the Excel was supposed to be replaced by the Elantra in 1990, but it ended up being sold for four more years until being replaced by the Hyundai Accent in the model year 1995. From 1990, there was a coupé variant called the Hyundai Scoupe, which was replaced by the Hyundai Coupé in 1996.

Common 1998 Hyundai Excel problems

The Hyundai Excel, produced from 1985 to 2000, was a popular subcompact car known for its affordability and reliability. However, like any vehicle, the Hyundai Excel had its share of common problems, particularly in the 1998 model year.

One of the most frequently reported problems with the 1998 Hyundai Excel is with the electrics. Owners have reported issues with warped or cracked plastic trim components due to prolonged exposure to the sun. However, the most frustrating problem is with the vehicle's electrical system, which can cause a range of issues, from dashboard lights not turning on to the radio not working and power windows not functioning properly. These issues are often caused by a faulty alternator, a damaged battery, or a malfunctioning power window motor.

Another common problem with the 1998 Hyundai Excel is with the gearbox. The manual gearbox in the Excel is known to be unreliable, with many owners reporting issues with selecting reverse gear and second-gear synchro. These issues can be caused by worn-out clutch or faulty gearbox components. In some cases, the entire gearbox may need to be replaced.

The Hyundai Excel's brake system is another area where common problems have been reported. Drivers have reported that the brakes feel spongy or unresponsive, which can lead to difficulty stopping the vehicle. This issue is often caused by worn-out brake pads, a damaged brake rotor, or a malfunctioning brake caliper.

The engine is another area where the 1998 Hyundai Excel has experienced common problems. Some drivers have reported that the engine stalls or fails to start altogether, while others have experienced issues with the engine misfiring or running rough. These issues can be caused by a malfunctioning fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, or a faulty ignition coil.

Rust and corrosion are also common problems with the 1998 Hyundai Excel. The paint can bubble and peel, and the body can rust, particularly around the wheel wells and undercarriage. To prevent rust and corrosion, it's important to wash the vehicle regularly and apply protective coatings to the body.

In summary, the 1998 Hyundai Excel had its share of common problems, including issues with the electrics, gearbox, brakes, engine, and rust and corrosion. However, with proper maintenance and repairs, many Excel owners are able to keep their vehicles running smoothly for years to come.
