2004 Hyundai Sonata problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 2004 Hyundai Sonata problems
The 2004 Hyundai Sonata has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car.
One of the most critical issues is related to the suspension system, specifically the front sub-frame. The sub-frame may corrode due to the application of road salt in certain jurisdictions, which may result in progressive internal corrosion of the front sub-frame. This corrosion may lead to thinning or perforation of the sub-frame steel, causing the forward mounting of the lower control arm to detach from the sub-frame. This issue can result in noise, tire misalignment, and steering pull. Hyundai has issued a recall for this issue, and dealers will measure the thickness of the front sub-frame and inspect it for corrosion damage. If necessary, the front sub-frame will be replaced with a new one that incorporates additional holes in the upper and lower panels. If the front sub-frame does not require replacement, the dealer will add drainage holes to the sub-frame and treat it with rust-proofing material to stop the corrosion process.
Another common issue is related to the engine and engine cooling system. The throttle control module (TCM) may require reprogramming in 2003-2004 Sonata 2.4L/2.7L vehicles to address a driveline bump between 2-10 mph. This issue can be resolved by reprogramming the TCM, and Hyundai has issued a service alert for this issue.
The 2004 Hyundai Sonata may also have issues with the accelerator/throttle. There have been 60 service alerts for this issue, indicating that it is a common problem. The ABS harness may have a certain wire responsible for transmitting information about a sign of movement, which may cause problems. Additionally, removing the spring valve from the clutch sleeve cylinder in cars with the old Sirius may also cause issues, although less frequently. The idle speed control or throttle position sensor may also cause problems, and attention should be paid to these components. The engine may consume more oil after 150,000 kilometers due to hardening of the valve stem seals, and the starter may fail after 150 to 200,000 kilometers due to wear of the retractor or brushes. The engine mounts may also need to be replaced by this time due to vibrations. The radiator may leak, and the electric fans may fail soon. The catalyst may also become unusable, and the engines were paired with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission
The mechanical box is quite reliable, but with high mileage, it may become necessary to repair it due to wear on the differential gears and bearings. The clutch of mechanical boxes paired with 2.0-liter engines runs more than 120 to 180,000 kilometers, while clutch boxes operating with a 2.7-liter V6 have a shorter life. Mechanics recommend installing an analog from Santa Fe instead of a faulty flywheel, as it is more reliable. The machine was developed by Mitsubishi and has the designation f4a42. Under normal operating conditions and regular oil changes, the box is quite capable of driving 300,000 kilometers without repair. However, in practice, serious malfunctions may occur after 200,000 kilometers, requiring the replacement of the valve body or the elimination of the consequences of the destruction of the differential paired with a 2.4-liter engine
The suspension settings are biased towards comfort, and the steering wheel is light and uninformative. The reactions to the rotation of the steering wheel are restrained, and active taxiing may cause the stern to float. The seams and road patches on the front axle use double wishbones, while the rear axle uses a multi-link scheme with steering effect silent blocks. The first two engines are representatives of the Sirius series, while the largest is a Delta series unit, which is a copy of Mitsubishi engines of the same name
In summary, the 2004 Hyundai Sonata has several common problems, including issues with the suspension system, engine and engine cooling system, accelerator/throttle, and transmission. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

- VIN: KMHWF35H24A
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I currently own a 2004 Hyundai Sonata with a severe sub-fame deterioration, Unfortunately it does not fall under the so called salt belt states, That being said I don't know how Kansas does not fit that especially north east Kansas. Wondering if there's some way that they could reconsider on this matter and maybe get some help. I know the cars almost 20 yrs but it's in good shape with only 108000 miles on it. Thanks for any help with this matter. I was just informed by Hyundai that they would not do anything with it so I guess my only option is to drive it at my own risk and hope for the best. Regardless I'm very upset with there decision and that there okay with a persons life knowing this was a issues with many sonatas that probably didn't make the recall list.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-12
- VIN: KMHWF35H94A
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
- Summary: NHTSA Campaign 09V124000 (Hyundai Recall #089) - excessive corrosion, thinning of the metal and perforation of the front sub-frame steel, due to road salt, resulting in separation of the forward mounting of the lower control arm increasing the risk of a crash. The recall was issued in 2009 for 1999-2004 Hyundai Sonatas. The present owner purchased the vehicle in 2014 with no knowledge of previous recall. The excessive corrosion and perforation of the sub-frame was brought to the owner's attention in December 2022 during a routine oil change by a Meineke shop and reported as unsafe to drive. The vehicle was towed to Route 1 Hyundai in Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, for inspection and repair estimate on December 30, 2022 and an online complaint filed with Hyundai Motor America for the recall (Case #[XXX]). Following numerous email communications to Hyundai Consumer Affairs, it was confirmed by a National Consumer Affairs representative that the vehicle was covered in Hyundai Recall #089. Route 1 Hyundai took photos of the front sub-frame and H-frame, completed a report and submitted it to Hyundai Motor America. Hyundai Motor America responded that they are declining assistance due to the failure being out of warranty caused by the time in service and mileage of the vehicle. The vehicle has 80,000 miles on the odometer. I am of the understanding that safety recalls are never out of date. Please verify if the response made by Hyundai Motor America is justified. - Summary: The front subframe has a hole in it it rusted for some reason and upon research there was a recall on this particular issue but now there isn’t one. I went to two dealerships and they informed me that Hyundai had recalls on this issue that’s why I’m confused on why when I search by my VIN there isn’t any open recalls. Just because they isn’t any open recalls on this doesn’t mean that people aren’t still experiencing this issue.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

- VIN: KMHWF35H94A
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I own a 2004 Hyundai Sonata. On 1/19/22, while driving the car, the brakes started failing. I was able to drive the car to my independent mechanic's shop and they repaired the brake issue with a fabrication and installation of the brake line. As my inspection was due, I made an appt with them to bring it back for inspection before the month was over. When I did bring it back however, another mechanic (who apparently had seen underneath the car when they did the brake work) stated that it would never pass inspection as the corrosion was severe. I then made an appt on 2/9 with the dealer who sold me the vehicle. The dealer however stated that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign 09V124000 (Suspension). I believe it should have been included in that recall and that I am entitled to the "Remedy" outlined in the NHTSA recall.

2004 Hyundai Sonata recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2004 Hyundai Sonata.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.
- Consequence: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

Your car sounds amazing! I'm glad to hear that you love it so much. It's impressive that it still runs like a champ even after six years. The mahogany wood grain inside sounds like a beautiful touch, and the silver body style is definitely sleek and sporty. It's great that you have the V6 2.7L engine, which delivers a lot of power and speed. I hope you get another 100,000 miles out of her! Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

I bought my Sonata with 17,000 miles on it.It now has 204,000 miles and it's still going strong. It has never once left me stranded, and I've only had to do the usual car maintenance: brakes, tires, tune up, etc.I have been meticulous about oil changes every 3,000 miles. The interior is still in great shape, and it continues to be a comfortable ride, still.Truly the best car I've ever owned. My only complaint is that it's not the greatest in terms of gas mileage.
-
Have it checked by a mechanic.

I'm so grateful to my Sonata for keeping me safe when my driver's door was crashed in by a car going 50mph. Thanks to both airbags deploying, I only ended up with a scratch on my finger. At the scene, several people thought I was dead and searched for the driver who was gone. When I walked outside of the car and told them that I was the driver, they were shocked! Although I had some trouble buying my second car at Glassman in Southfield, I had great success at LaFontaine in Dearborn. I love my car and the dealership is awesome! I'm definitely considering buying a third car from them when the time comes.
-
I experienced a car accident due to the left rear tire coming off while driving on the highway. Fortunately, there were no other issues and no one else was involved in the accident. It is unclear whether this is a common occurrence.

The fuel pump has failed three times since ownership at 50,000 miles. Additionally, the water pump failure at 100,000 miles caused damage to the pistons, timing belt, and heads. Despite these issues, I am pleased with the appearance of my brand new Hyundai and find the ride and comfort to be satisfactory. Overall, while there have been some setbacks, I remain confident in the quality of my vehicle.

Great bodystyle, 6 cyl moves out quite well, and everything seems tight fitting with good attention to detail. However, the standard model lacks cupholders for children in the rear. Despite this, I am confident in recommending this vehicle. Unfortunately, my dealer experience was terrible and unprofessional.

The car experienced significant issues after only 9 months of use, including peeling exterior paint and malfunctioning windows. Despite the supposed reliability of the Hyundai Sonata, my brother's engine blew at only 50,000 miles, and both the manufacturer and dealership refused to honor their warranty. Although he was forced to pay over $2,000 out of pocket, he is still fighting for reimbursement in court. It is clear that Hyundai has failed to deliver on their promises of quality and customer service. This experience serves as a warning to potential buyers to avoid purchasing a Hyundai vehicle.

I purchased a Sonata in June 2004 and traded it in April 2007 with 77,000 miles. Although it was comfortable, the 4-cylinder engine lacked acceleration and did not provide any MPG benefits, averaging 22mpg on mostly highway driving in the winter and 24-26mpg in the summer. Unfortunately, the reliability was questionable, as it required 3 visits to the shop for emissions issues, as well as 1 brake and 1 fuel pump repair. On the other hand, my friend's V6 Sonata had better MPG, more power, and none of the issues I experienced. The interior used cheap materials, but it was put together well, and I did enjoy driving the car. In the future, I plan to purchase another Hyundai, but not for high mileage driving. I may consider an Elantra or a new Sonata to complement my BMW (2003 model) for when an automatic transmission would be convenient.
