2000 Hyundai Sonata problems

The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

2000 Hyundai Sonata engine

Old and new Sonata model years had similar issues with their timing chain tensioner, which produced rattling noises upon engine startup. Many owners also reported a broken timing belt, which damaged the crankshaft position sensor.

What was a bad year for Hyundai Sonata?

A Hyundai Sonata engine failure lawsuit accuses Hyundai of manufacturing defective engines in model year 2011-2012 Sonatas. The plaintiff alleges Hyundai knew when the connecting rod bearings start to fail, metal debris from the bearings is sent throughout the engine through contaminated engine oil.

A Hyundai Sonata will cost about $5,998 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular sedan models by $1,098. There is also a 17.73% chance that a Sonata will require a major repair during that time.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-10
  • VIN: KMHWF35V3YA
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA ON GOOD ROAD AND APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT IN THE LEFT THROUGH-LANE OF A MULTILANE STREET, I MADE A QUICK STOP (NOT AND EMERGENCY STOP) WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED YELLOW. THE ROAD WAS IN GOOD CONDITION AND DRY, AND THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE WAS ABOUT ABOUT 80 DEGREES F. UPON MAKING THIS STOP THE CAR PULLED UNUSUALLY SHARPLY TO THE RIGHT - IF THERE HAD BEEN A CAR IN THE RIGHT LANE, I WOULD HAVE HIT IT. AFTER THIS STOP, THE FRONT TIRE(S) MADE UNUSUAL SQUEELING NOISES UPON TURNING, AND THE STEERING FELT UNUSUAL AND SHAKEY. I DROVE THE CAR DIRECTLY (ABOUT A MILE) TO THE PLACE WE WERE VISITING IN LAS VEGAS AND THE NEXT MORNING TOOK THE CAR DIRECTLY TO A HYUNDAI DEALER. UPON INSPECTION THE DEALER FOUND THAT THE FRONT SUSPENSION FRAME CROSSMEMBER (FRONT SUBFRAME) HAD A CORROSION HOLE THROUGH THE FRONT SUBBFRAME AND THE FRONT SUBFRAME HAD FAILED, CAUSING THE RIGHT FRONT (PASSENGER) TIRE TO MOVE OUT OF POSITION AND SITTING AT AN ANGLE. THE DEALER'S ADVICE WAS THAT THIS WAS A SAFETY PROBLEM, AND IT COULD FURTHER FAIL AND RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL. THEY ADVISED THAT I DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR UNTIL THIS THIS FRONT SUBFRAME WAS REPLACED. THIS IS A REPLACEABLE PIECE - WHICH WAS ORDERED, AND REPLACEMENT PLANNED. THE CAR WAS LEFT WITH THE HYUNDAI DEALER, AND NOT DRIVEN FURTHER. THIS SITUATION IS ESSENTIALLY IDENTICAL TO NHTSA REFERENCE NUMBER 13V354000 FOR THE REAL SUSPENSION FOR SOME HYUNDAI VEHICLES THAT LED TO HYUNDAI RECALL CAMPAIGN 113 APPROVED IN SEPT 2013. HYUNDAI RECORDS SHOW THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED IN ILLINOIS (ONE OF THE APPROVED 113-RECALL STATES) AND IT WAS DRIVEN THERE FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS OR SO. I AM THE SECOND OWNER. HYUNDAI HAS ISSUED TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN CAMPAIGN NUMBER 12-01-029 DATED OCTOBER 2012 (SUPERSEDES BULLETIN 09-01-020-2) WHICH ADDRESSES THIS FRONT SUBFRAME PROBLEM, BUT, I AM TOLD, IT IS NOT AN APPROVED RECALL. *TR

THEY REFUSE TO FIX THE PROBLEMS THAT I EXPERIENCED BY SAYING MY CAR IS NOT LISTED IN ANY RECALL CAMPAIGN. UNFORTUNATELY THIS YEAR, ON 10/11/12, I TOOK MY CAR FOR AN ANNUAL STATE INSPECTION FOR 2000 HYUNDAI SONATA AND IT FAILS THE SAFETY INSPECTION. HERE IS WHAT IT SAYS: ***VEHICLE MEMO*** VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE...REAR SUB-FRAME HAS HOLE ROTTED THROUGH... DUE TO THE CURRENT FINANCIAL SITUATION, I DON'T KNOW HOW I WILL GET THIS CAR FIXED BECAUSE THE CAR IS NOW 115,000MILES AND 12 YEARS OLD AND I DON'T KNOW IF THEY WILL FIX IT. THEY HAVE CONTINUOUSLY REFUSED TO FIX MY CAR UNDER WARRANTY EVEN WHEN IT WAS CLEARLY WITHIN THE WARRANTY PERIOD AND I WAS LUCKY THEN THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PAY THE FIXES OUT OF POCKET BUT I DON'T HAVE THE LUXURY OF PAYING OUT OF POCKET THIS TIME. 2000 Hyundai Sonata recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2000 Hyundai Sonata.

2009-04-16
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.
  • Consequence: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.
2002-04-09
  • Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION THAT LEADS TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION COULD RESULT FROM MOTION OF THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS AND SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESS CONNECTOR WHICH MOUNT TO THE ADJUSTABLE SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY. THIS CONDITION ONLY RELATES TO THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAGS AND COULD PREVENT AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT DURING A CRASH WHERE SUCH DEPLOYMENT SHOULD OCCUR.
  • Consequence: NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY DURING A SIDE IMPACT CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL MORE SECURELY FASTEN THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WIRING HARNESSES AND CONNECTORS TO THE VEHICLE'S FRONT SEAT CUSHION FRAMES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 28, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

Negative 2000 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

We've been really pleased with the car! So far, we've driven it about 14,000 miles and it has been great. The car drives well, has upscale features, and we haven't had any maintenance problems. Although there have been several manufacturer recalls, the Renton dealership has been fantastic to work with.

My transmission went out at 78,000 miles, which is the second time it has happened with a Hyundai. Unfortunately, my 96 Accent also lost its transmission after the 60,000 mile warranty. It cost me $2000 last time, and I am not willing to pay that much again, especially not to this dealer. It seems like they do not value their customers. If you have a Hyundai, it might be best to drive it until it is no longer drivable. It can be difficult to get a good trade-in value for a Hyundai, and many dealerships do not even want them on their lot. You may have to give it away or drive it until it dies.

The car's ride has become firmer and wind noise has increased since I first acquired it. The bumps on the road are now more noticeable. Although the cabin was already somewhat loud, it has worsened over time. In colder weather, the windows may not roll down and tend to fog up frequently in rainy, snowy, and/or cold conditions. The heater must be set to defrost the windshield, or else all the windows will fog up, which is a significant flaw. I have replaced the rear wheel bearings and both front headlights, but otherwise, the car has been reliable. The only feature that it lacks is a moon roof.

Hello! If you're reading this, I wanted to share my experience with the Hyundai warranty. I had an issue with my car's engine, and unfortunately, I had some trouble getting the power train warranty honored. Despite having all the receipts and maintaining my car well, I had to hire an attorney to help me out. I've also seen similar complaints online, so I recommend doing some research on Hyundai's warranty before making a purchase. Thanks for reading!

I'm really happy with my car, it's been a great value for the money. Unfortunately, I had to replace both back wheel bearings even though the car has less than 25,000 miles and is not even 3 years old. I take great care of my car and there was no wear and tear, so it seems like a manufacturing issue. However, I'm glad that Hyundai has excellent towing service and they were able to pick up my car within minutes and tow it to the nearest dealership for free repairs. Overall, I really enjoy driving this car.

I cannot express how much I love my 2000 Sonata GLS V6. It has everything you could want in a car! It is incredibly comfortable, quiet, and enjoyable to drive. As a proud owner of a Hyundai, I highly recommend this line of vehicles. In fact, my family also owns Hyundai cars. If you have any doubts about the product, I encourage you to test drive one. I am confident that you will be impressed!

Hi there! We bought this car when gas prices were high. Although it's not a Camry, it's still a great car. I've noticed that some people who leave reviews don't seem to understand that cars require some preventative maintenance. I've had to replace the timing belts and brakes on both my Camry and this car. While the Camry is considered the GOLD standard, the Sonata is also a solid vehicle. It's probably not fair to compare the two, but I've heard that the new Sonatas are closer in feel to a Camry. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. The car has a similar design, ergonomics, and power to my old '96 Accord. Thanks for taking the time to read this!

My Sonata has been great! I'm so glad I chose it. I haven't had any major problems and it's a joy to drive. It's really comfortable and has a lot of get up and go. I always get approached by strangers who tell me how much they love the styling and ask how happy I've been with the car.

  4. Tyler Ledner 2024-08-12

I've owned this vehicle for almost 4 years and haven't had any problems. The only expenses I've had were for routine maintenance. I really enjoy driving it, and I was pleasantly surprised when Hyundai (or my dealer) covered the cost of fixing the heater fan, even though it was broken because a mouse had built a nest in it.

  5. Brandon Crooks 2024-07-28

As a fellow Hyundai Sonata GLS V6 owner, I am thrilled to hear that you are satisfied with your purchase! It's great to know that you were able to get a good value and a low APR in March 2000. As for the car itself, it seems to be very well-built and reliable, with very few problems even after approaching 60,000 miles. It's impressive that you've only had to take it to the dealer three times, and even then, it was mostly for recalls and warranty issues. The car runs smoothly, feels solid, and has decent power, all while remaining reasonably quiet even at high speeds. While the adaptive transmission can be a bit rough at times, it's reassuring to hear that there haven't been any major engine or transmission problems yet. It's good to know that the front brakes were replaced at 57,000 miles, ensuring that the car remains safe and reliable. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the Hyundai Sonata GLS V6!
