2002 Hyundai Sonata problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI CARIBBEAN-PUERTO RICO
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 82 MODEL YEAR 2002-2003 SONATA VEHICLES. REPEATED USE OF THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE MAY CAUSE WEAR OF THE CHROME PLATING. IF THE TOP EDGE OF THE HANDLE HAS VERY THIN CHROME PLATING THAT PORTION OF THE PLATING MAY WEAR AWAY MORE EASILY THAN MORE THICKLY PLATED AREAS AS THE DOOR HANDLE IS USED. THE WORN CHROME PLATING ON THE UPPER EDGE OF THE HANDLE MAY RESULT IN A CRACK OR SEPARATION BETWEEN THE CHROME PLATING ON THE INBOARD AND OUTBOARD SURFACES OF THE HANDLE, WHICH MAY FORM A SHARP EDGE.
- Consequence: A SHARP EDGE COULD LACERATE OR OTHERWISE INJURE A VEHICLE OCCUPANT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE CHROME PLATED INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 16, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI OF PUERTO RICO AT 1-787-999-3333.

- Summary: HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.
- Consequence: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. - Consequence: INADVERTENT ACTIVATION OF THE TCS WILL CAUSE AUTOMATIC APPLICATION OF THE BRAKE AT THE WHEEL WHERE THE COMPACT SPARE TIRE IS INSTALLED. INADVERTENT BRAKE APPLICATION COULD CAUSE OVERHEATING AND DAMAGE TO THE BRAKE, AND MAY PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM BEING DRIVEN AT SPEEDS ABOVE 20 MPH, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPARE TIRE WITH A NEW LARGER DIAMETER T125/80R-15 COMPACT SPARE TIRE AND A NEW TIRE PRESSURE LABEL WILL BE INSTALLED ON THE DRIVER'S DOOR TO PROVIDE INFORMATION APPLICABLE TO THE T125/80R-15 COMPACT SPARE TIRE. - Consequence: INADVERTENT DEPLOYMENT OF A SRS SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG WHEN A SIDE IMPACT CRASH HAS NOT OCCURRED COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG SATELLITE SENSORS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JULY 8, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

Positive 2002 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

We were searching for a new car for winter driving because we already own a 2001 BMW. We test drove Hondas, Toyotas, and Mazdas. We found that for a comparably equipped Japanese car, we would have to pay more. We had never considered a Hyundai before. We almost bought a Protoge until we saw the Sonata in the dealer's lot. After just one test drive, we were sold. The car has been flawless and I am extremely happy with my decision to get this car.

I'm so glad you're considering this car! I was a bit hesitant at first, but after driving it for a year and taking a few long trips, I absolutely fell in love with it. It's also quite capable of pulling a decent size load with the trailer hitch I attached. In terms of gas mileage, it gets around 23 mpg (imperial) in the city and an impressive 35 mpg (imperial) on the highway. The only issue I've had is with the gas cap - if it's not turned tight enough, the check engine light comes on and I have to take it to the dealer to fix it. Luckily, the dealer is excellent and always takes care of it for me!

The styling of my car has attracted quite a few curious strangers who have stopped to ask me what brand it is. The front view gives off a classy 'Jaguar' vibe. Although I did experience a problem with the transmission in the first week (apparently common with Hyundais), the stereo is good (although sadly popular amongst car burglars). It's always fun to floor it and the car is very comfortable even on 3-6 hour drives. After 8000 miles, I can confidently say that it compares well to most imports I've ridden in. The V6 + Shiftronic make it easy to navigate tightly timed traffic lights and winter weather. I've easily attained a max speed of 122 MPH. The 4 disc brakes take some getting used to, but the V6 purrs (unlike the 4 cyl which has a high pitch whine on acceleration). As a driver, I am extremely happy with my car and would give it *3* thumbs up!!!

I purchased this car from a dealer when the odometer reading was around 72K. Since then, I have driven less than 3K. I really enjoy the car's style and its quick pickup. It leaves almost every other car in the rearview! I have even tested it against cars like Lexus, BMW, Toyota, and Honda, and my Sonata picks up faster than all of them! However, I have found that maintenance for this car can be quite costly. I have had to replace the alternator (which cost about $500), the power steering pressure hose (which cost about $450), and perform general maintenance. Unfortunately, the car's engine makes some noise that my mechanic couldn't figure out, so I need to take it to the dealership (which will cost more money). Additionally, the airbag signal has turned red, which only the dealer can see (and will also cost more money). Overall, it has been an expensive car to maintain for only 3K miles of travel.

Your car has been a reliable mode of transportation, providing 100% reliability even after accumulating 94K miles. It is the most dependable car you have ever owned. However, you have experienced some issues with the electric antenna, clock, and radio. Despite these issues, you still love the car as it drives wonderfully, is very comfortable, and has required minimal repairs. It also has good mileage and still looks shiny and new. Regarding your purchasing experience, you had a negative experience with Rick Case due to their manipulative tactics. Additionally, their service department did not meet your expectations as they charged you for both back brakes but only did one and left a work light hanging from your car. You plan to buy another Sonata soon, but you will not be purchasing it from them.

I have owned the car for 5 years. During the first 60,000 miles, I had zero problems as long as I kept up with the maintenance. However, after that, I experienced some issues such as the power steering pressure hose bursting, the ignition crank sensor failing, and many interior and exterior pieces coming loose and looking bad. Unfortunately, the struts are now bad too. At 75,000 miles, the timing belt failed and destroyed the engine to the point where it needed a rebuild. In my opinion, it's best to ditch the car after 60k as its resale value is so low that it's not worth the repairs. I now have a year-old Toyota and the previous car is just a six-thousand-dollar paperweight.

I have a 99 Sonata. While I've had some issues with reliability, unfortunately, it seems like my car has been in the shop every few months. The airbag light comes on every six months, and the oxygen sensors have gone out three times. Recently, I had to replace the wheel bearing in the back tires, which cost over $300 since they don't sell just the bearing. Since it's front-wheel drive, the rear bearings aren't covered by the powertrain warranty.

At around 8,000 miles, there was a problem with the drum brakes, which was disputed with the dealership. However, the headlight and battery failure were covered under warranty. Although the vibrating in the steering wheel and chair was disputed and not resolved, I will check with another dealership. The service center I used was Freeman Hyundai.

So far so good! You can pick up the car on March 24th, 2002. We bought a base Sonata with a V6 and automatic transmission for $16,038.00 plus tax and title, in Desert Sand. We traded in a 98 Bonneville, which was a nice car but too big for my wife. We had leased two Mazda 626s for 6 years, but after taking a used 626 01 for a test drive, we decided to try out the Sonata 4CY and 6CY. What a difference in ride! Even the 4CY was quite compared to the 626, with better handling and all-around better features. My wife loves the car and we're still breaking it in. As for ABS brakes, I've had two cars with them and I would never buy a car with them again! Take a test drive and see what you think.

I strongly advise against purchasing this car. It consistently caused issues and drained my finances. Despite attempts at repair, new problems arose frequently. Due to the poor quality of this Korean vehicle, I will not be purchasing from this brand again. It is regrettable that I did not make a more informed decision.
