Hyundai Sonata 2003 problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-22
- VIN: KMHWF35H33A
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: Airbag light came on and stays on. Pulled a code that pointed to the wiring in the passenger seat. Moved wiring around and made sure connectors were properly plugged and the light went away for maybe a week. Light is back on again. Removed seat bolts to gain better access, used tubing and electrical tape to straighten any kinked wiring I could find underneath passenger front seat, disconnected and reconnected connections. Airbag light blinked once and still remains on with the code still pointing to the passenger seat wiring. Apparently this issue has been reported many times in online forums with no meaningful response from the company though this clearly affects proper airbag deployment.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-27
- VIN: KMHWF35H33A
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
- Summary: THE AIR BAG LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY ON, MEANING THAT IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, THEY WILL NOT DEPLOY. INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. THIS IS APPARENTLY DUE TO WIRING UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SEAT STRETCHING AND PINCHING FROM MOVING THE SEAT ITSELF AND WHEN THINGS ARE PLACED UNDERNEATH THE SEAT THAT MAY DISTURB THE WIRING. I KNOW IT IS THE WIRING UNDERNEATH THE PASSENGER SEAT DUE TO CHECKING THE TROUBLE CODE AND ALSO BEING ABLE TO TEMPORARILY FIX THE ISSUE FOR A COUPLE WEEKS BY GINGERLY MOVING THE WIRES UNTIL THE LIGHT WENT AWAY. NOW I CAN'T GET THE LIGHT TO GO AWAY NO MATTER WHAT METHODS I TRY. CAN'T FIND A REPLACEMENT SET OF WIRES NOR CAN I LOCATE WHICH WIRE SPECIFICALLY IS BEING AFFECTED TO TRY TO FIX THE ISSUE MYSELF. I HAVE SEEN DOZENS OF PEOPLE MAKING THIS SAME COMPLAINT ABOUT THE AIRBAG LIGHT STAYING ON. THIS NEEDS A RECALL SINCE THIS CAN EASILY LEAD TO DEATH SINCE THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY TO ATTEMPT SAVING METHODS TO PASSENGERS. LIGHT WAS ON FOR THE PREVIOUS OWNER FOR I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG AND HAS BEEN ON FOR ME FOR ALMOST A YEAR NOW.

THE CAR WAS INOPERABLE SO I HAD IT TOWED TO MY HOUSE. 6-24-17 I BEGIN TO INSPECT WHAT HAPPENED, I JACKED THE RT FRT END OFF THE GROUND AND BLOCKED IT UP. I FOUND THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS SOMEWHAT LOOSE. IT WAS BROKEN LOOSE FROM THE RT SIDE SUBFRAME. I CAME IN THE HOUSE AND RESEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THIS WAS A PROBLEM WITH SONATA'S FROM 1999-2004 CAMPAIGN NUMBER 09V12400, I CONTACTED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE 6-24-17 AROUND 12:30PM. I GAVE THE CAR INFO TO THE LADY AND SHE SAID ONLY AN A-C RECALL WAS AVAILABLE FOR THE CAR. I ASKED ABOUT THE RECALL AND GAVE THE NUMBER, SHE SAID NOT FOR MY CAR AND THAT WAS ALL THEY COULD OFFER. WHEN THE CONTROL ARM BROKE LOOSE FROM SUBFRAME IT CAUSED THE AXLE TO PULL OUT OF THE DIFFERENTIAL AND THAT WAS WHY IT LOST POWER. I ALSO FOUND THAT THE SUBFRAME IS ALMOST RUSTED THROUGH AND WEAK.

- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: 2003 HYUNDAI SONATA AFFECTED BY PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE RIGHT FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLE, AND RESULTING IN THINNING, RUSTING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION/RUST IS VISIBLE AND DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION & ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND ALSO HEAR NOISES & NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL.THESE SIGNALS ARE DETECTING THE CORROSION PROGRESSING AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM DETACHING FROM THE SUB-FRAME. THE VEHICLE WAS BOUGHT NEW IN NEBRASKA, AND HAS REMAINED IN NEBRASKA ITS ENTIRE LIFE. NEBRASKA USES SALT ON ITS ROADS IN THE SAME CAPACITY AS IOWA AND OTHER "SALT STATES". SUCH CARS SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL WHEN CONSIDERING THE LACK OF SAFETY AND DANGERS INVOLVED WHEN THE SUBFRAME DETERIATES DUE TO DEFECTS IN THE MANUFACTURE OF SAID CAR. HYUNDAI SHOULD HONOR AND EXTEND THE RECALL OF SAID CAR IN THE STATE OF NEBRASKA BECAUSE THE DEFECT IN THE SUBFRAME HAS BEEN AFFECTED IDENTICALLY AS IN OTHER "SALT STATES".

- VIN: KMHWF335HX3
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: REPORT RECEIPT DATE: MAY 21, 2009 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 09V171000 COMPONENT(S): LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES SIMILAR ISSUE IS HAPPENING IN MY 2003 HYUNDAI SONATA VEHICLE. A CHILD IN MY BACK SEAT JUST SLICED THEIR HAND WITH A 2" INCH CUT AND WE HAD 3 OTHERS SLICE THEIR HAND ON THE FRONT DOOR HANDLE (WE TAPED THIS) BUT WAS NOT AWARE OF BACK SEAT NOR RECALL TILL TODAY. VERY CONCERNED AS TO SAFETY OF CHILDREN IN BACK SEAT. I ONLY REALIZED THIS HAPPENED TO ALL DOOR HANDLES AND THEIR HAD EVEN BEEN A RECALL AS THE PARENT OF THE INJURED CHILD SAID THEIR CAR HAD BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS ISSUE. I CALLED HYUNDAI 4/13/2016 TO DISCUSS AND WAS TOLD MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL ALTHOUGH THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. ALL CHROME IS PEELING FROM TOP OF HANDLE AT THE SEAM ON ALL 4 INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-03-01
- Number Of Injuries: 6
- VIN: KMHWF35H03A
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: REPEATED USE OF THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE MAY CAUSE WEAR OF THE CHROME PLATE. IF THE TOP EDGE OF THE HANDLE HAS VERY THIN CHROME PLATING, THAT PORTION OF THE PLATING MAY WEAR AWAY MORE EASILY THAN MORE THICKLY PLATED AREAS AS THE DOOR HANDLE IS USED. THE WORN CHROME PLATING ON THE UPPER EDGE OF THE HANDLE MAY RESULT IN A CRACK OR SEPARATION BETWEEN THE CHROME PLATING ON THE INBOARD AND OUTBOARD SURFACES OF THE HANDLE, WHICH MAY FORM A SHARP EDGE. CONSEQUENCE: THIS MAY INFLICT LACERATION INJURIES TO ANYONE USING THE DOOR HANDLE. BASICALLY WHEN YOU GO TO USE THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLES THE PEELING CHROME IS SHARP AND CUTS YOUR FINGERS. HYUNDAI RECALL #93 ENDED IN MARCH 2003, MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN MAY 2003. THE PROBLEM IS IDENTICAL TO THE MODELS IN RECALL #93.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-20
- VIN: KMHWF25HX3A
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: MY VEHICLE IS AFFECTED BY THE FOLLOWING SAFETY RECALL IN WHICH THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES ARE PEELING AND THE TOP EDGE BECOMES SHARP - I TAPED OVER THE TOP SO I WOULDN'T CUT MY HANDS IN THE MEANTIME: NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 09V171000 / HYUNDAI RECALL NO. 093. I BROUGHT IT FOR SERVICE AT MOTORWORLD HYUNDAI IN WILKES BARRE, PA AND THEY VERIFIED ALL DOOR HANDLES WERE PEELING. THE INITIAL RECALL REPAIR FOR THIS CAMPAIGN WAS PERFORMED ON 11/11/2009, BUT CLEARLY THE REPAIR DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM AS IT RECURRED. MOTORWORLD TOLD ME THEY HAD TO CONTACT HYUNDAI CORPORATE FOR AUTHORIZATION FOR THE REPAIR. I WAS CALLED BACK AND TOLD THEY WOULD ONLY PAY FOR PARTS BUT NOT LABOR. THIS SURPRISED ME, AS A SAFETY RECALL IS SUPPOSED TO BE REMEDIED AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. I THEN CONTACTED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE 4 TIMES, ON 1/20, 1/27, 2/10, AND 2/18 OF 2016 AND EACH TIME I WAS TOLD I WOULD RECEIVE A CALL BACK, WHICH I NEVER RECEIVED. I THEN CONTACTED AN ATTORNEY FOR ADVICE AND THEY TOLD ME IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW THAT HYUNDAI SHOULD BE PAYING THE ENTIRETY OF THE COSTS FOR ALL SAFETY RECALLS. I CALLED AGAIN ON 3/7 AND STATED THIS AND THEY TOLD ME THEY CAN'T HELP ME. I CAN'T PROCEED WITH THE ATTORNEY SINCE THAT WOULD COST ME MONEY I DO NOT HAVE. WHAT CAN I DO? IT HAS BEEN 47 DAYS SINCE I FIRST BROUGHT THIS SAFETY RECALL PROBLEM TO THE ATTENTION OF HYUNDAI AND THEIR REPRESENTATIVES AND THEY HAVE FAILED TO ASSIST ME IN ANY CAPACITY.

When people ask me what type of vehicle I have, they are often surprised to find out it's a Hyundai. Some have even mistaken it for a Jaguar or a Mercedes due to its sleek appearance. And when they've ridden in it, they always comment on how nice it is.

Your car runs great! I noticed that sometimes the engine seems to be working a bit too hard.

After doing a lot of research, I decided to purchase a 2003 Sonata. It's been a fantastic car and I got a great deal on it! I opted for a more basic model, which cost me around $15,000, but it still comes with plenty of features that other cars charge extra for.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 2003 LX w/ABS & TC. Overall, I'm really happy with the vehicle, although the gas mileage (18 MPG, 60-40 city/highway) could be better. However, I'm optimistic that it will improve over time. I also really enjoyed my 2001 Sonata GLS Leather until it was unfortunately totaled when a car going 55 MPH hit us from behind while we were stopped. Thankfully, none of us inside were injured. I've received nothing but compliments on the vehicle, including from the techs who installed my alarm system. Thanks for listening!

I would definitely recommend this car based on its great price, impressive performance, and outstanding reliability. The 6-cylinder engine provides more than enough acceleration, and the car handles beautifully. Just remember to change the timing belt before reaching 70k miles (highly recommended). Overall, I am extremely pleased with this purchase!

This car requires some repairs, but I am confident in its potential. Despite some negative reviews, I believe in the quality of the Sonata. I recently took it to the dealer and was informed of some necessary repairs that will cost approximately $2000. Although the airbag light is not covered under warranty and will cost $481 to fix, I understand the importance of safety and will take care of it. The engine is making some noise and a belt needs to be replaced, but I trust the dealer's expertise and will authorize the necessary repairs. While I still owe $10000 on the car, I am confident that it will be worth it in the long run.

The Sonata's standard equipment list and aesthetics caught my eye, leading me to choose it over the base model Accord. However, after owning it for 12 months, I have encountered a few issues. I needed new brake pads and front tires at just 15,000 miles of mostly city driving, and had to replace the wiper fluid pump and front headlight fuses. Additionally, the window trim is already peeling. Despite these setbacks, I have averaged 17 MPG in 95% city driving with automatic. Overall, I still enjoy driving my Sonata.

The Sonata is priced at an average of $5k less than the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. However, I have personally experienced that after 6 years of ownership, I ended up spending much more on repairs for this 'cheap car' than I would have if I had gone with one of the others. Everything on this car at the garage is considered 'special parts' and therefore expensive. It requires special transmission fluid when flushing and special tires (racing ones found on a Jag) that cost about $130 per tire, and I have already replaced 2 sets. The power radio antenna broke, which cost $300 to repair, and the power steering line rusted and broke, with the repair still pending. I have driven 134,000 miles on it so far and have gone through 3 sets of brakes and pads, even though most of my driving is on wide-open highways. Therefore, I suggest buying a better car upfront and saving money in the long run.

I really like my car and its features, but unfortunately it hasn't been very dependable. I've had to replace the alternator, cv shafts, and even the whole engine. It's important to follow maintenance intervals for timing belts, as they tend to break and can cause serious damage. Despite these issues, my car is still nice and turns heads even after 7 years. I wish it was a little more fuel-efficient and dependable, and had more features, but I only have the base model. I plan to keep driving it until I graduate college, but I'm not sure if I would buy another one. The body has 154,000 miles on it, but the engine only has 7,000 and it's still going strong. I really hope it lasts! Thank you.

The car has had some issues with the caliber, brakes, interior handles, transmission fluid, alternator, timing belt, and paint. However, it is important to note that these are common issues for a used 2003 car and can be addressed with proper maintenance. It is recommended to be prepared for potential repair costs and to have a budget in place. Overall, with proper care and attention, this car can still provide reliable transportation.
