The Porsche Cayenne is a series of automobiles manufactured by the German company Porsche since 2002. It is a luxury crossover SUV and has been described as both a full-sized and a mid-sized vehicle. The first generation was known internally within Porsche as the Type 9PA (955/957) or E1. It was the first V8-engined vehicle built by Porsche since 1995, when the Porsche 928 was discontinued. It is also Porsche's first off-road variant vehicle since its Super and Junior tractors of the 1950s, and the first Porsche with four doors. Since 2014, the Cayenne has been sold alongside a smaller Porsche SUV, the Macan.

The second-generation Cayenne (Type 92A or E2) was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show in March. The Cayenne shares its platform, body frame, doors and electronics with the similar Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7. It received a facelift in 2014 with minor external changes, and introduced a new plug-in E-Hybrid version, with its public launch at the Paris Motor Show. Since 2008, all engines have featured direct injection technology. The third generation (Type PO536) was unveiled in 2017 at Stuttgart.

First generation (E1 9PA; 2002)

The original Porsche Cayenne entered into the global market to a mixed reception, but it proved itself to have excellent performance for an SUV and had comparably good handling as well as powerful engines. The lineup initially consisted of the V8-powered Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo. Later in the model cycle, VR6 and diesel-powered versions joined the lineup. In the eight model years of the E1 generation, a total of 276,652 units were produced.

The base model Cayenne is powered by a 3.2-L VR6 engine producing 250 PS (184 kW; 247 hp). The intake manifold is unique to Porsche, but otherwise the engine is largely the same as the VW engine. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) is 9.1 seconds with the manual transmission and 9.7 seconds with the Tiptronic S.

Common 2016 Porsche Cayenne problems

The 2016 Porsche Cayenne, a second-generation mid-size luxury SUV, is known for its performance and styling. However, like any vehicle, it has some common problems that owners have reported.

One common issue is the radiator shutters, which are relatively low and vulnerable to water and debris. While this is not mission-critical, as most of the time when they fail, they fail in the open position, it can still cause some inconvenience. To detect any faults, a scanner that can read Porsche-specific codes is required.

Another issue that has been reported is with the transfer case breather update. It is essential to ensure that there is documentation in the maintenance records for this update. Additionally, many transfer cases have been changed under warranty, so it is worth checking if the transfer case on the specific vehicle has also been replaced.

Electrical gremlins can also pop up, but this is not unique to the 2016 Porsche Cayenne and can be found in many other vehicles. However, it is worth noting that electrical issues can be challenging to diagnose and repair, and they can be expensive to fix.

Older models of the Cayenne had issues with bore scoring in the V8 engines, but this is not a common problem in the 2016 model. However, it is still worth checking for any signs of engine wear and tear during a pre-purchase inspection.

The 2016 Porsche Cayenne is a luxury vehicle, and as such, maintenance is pricey. However, there are no significant ticking time bombs waiting to explode, and the vehicle is generally reliable. Transfer cases can go bad, but this is not a common problem in the 2016 model. If a transfer case needs to be replaced, it can be expensive, but this is not a frequent occurrence.

In summary, the 2016 Porsche Cayenne is a reliable vehicle, but like any vehicle, it has some common problems that owners have reported. These include issues with the radiator shutters, transfer case breather update, electrical gremlins, and transfer cases. However, with proper maintenance and regular inspections, these issues can be minimized, and the vehicle can provide years of trouble-free driving.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
  • VIN: WP1AD2A22GL
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: **Subject**: Urgent Safety Concern: Headlight Condensation and Water Damage in 2015-2018 Porsche Cayenne 958.2 Dear NHTSA, I am writing to report a serious safety issue with the LED matrix headlights on my 2016 Porsche Cayenne GTS (958.2). The problem involves severe condensation buildup within the headlight assembly, leading to water damage and electrical failures. This defect has caused my headlights to fail, particularly during nighttime driving in heavy rain, which significantly reduced visibility. This failure could have resulted in a major accident, putting my life and the lives of others at risk. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The issue first became noticeable after a rainstorm, where condensation started to build up inside the headlights. Despite multiple visits to my local Porsche dealership, where they confirmed the problem and attempted repairs, the issue continues to persist. I also notified Porsche corporate directly, but neither the dealership nor Porsche offered any assistance or permanent resolution. Both have failed to take responsibility for what I believe is a widespread defect, as I have found numerous similar reports from other owners. No warning lights or messages were displayed prior to the headlight failure, which made the issue even more dangerous. Without any prior indication, I was left driving without functioning headlights at night, in poor weather conditions. Given the potential for catastrophic consequences, I strongly urge NHTSA to investigate this issue. A recall or other corrective action is necessary to prevent further risks to drivers. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
  • VIN: WP1AB2A2XGL
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Dear NHTSA, I am writing to express a serious safety concern regarding the dashboard of my 2016 Porsche Cayenne S. The leather on the dash has begun to shrink and is no longer fitted properly. This misalignment is causing me significant worry about the potential impact on airbag deployment in the event of an accident. Given the crucial role that the dashboard and its covering play in the proper functioning of the airbag system, this issue could compromise the airbags' deployment or effectiveness. This is not only a major safety concern but also poses a risk of the airbags failing to protect occupants as intended, potentially leading to severe consequences during a collision. I am aware that this problem is not unique to my vehicle, as several other owners of the same model have reported similar issues. The potential impact on safety is alarming, and I believe this requires immediate attention. I kindly request that you investigate this issue urgently and advise on the appropriate resolution to ensure the safety of the vehicle’s airbag system. Prompt action is essential to address this potential risk.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-26
  • VIN: WP1AD2A2XGL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving vehicle, noticed some slippage/clunking when turning. Took vehicle to Porsche dealer, they said transfer case needed to be replaced. Car has 12,600 original miles on it. Dealer said there was an extended warranty on the transfer case that had expired. In researching, it became obvious that there is a Porsche design problem that affected several model years for the Cayenne. As a mechanical engineer I am concerned that a transfer case failure at freeway speeds could be dangerous. Separately an auto mechanic shop opined that driving without replacing could be a safety concern. In my opinion there should have been a recall rather than a extended warranty.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-16
  • VIN: WP1AE2A21GL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: my car had a problem in the hybrid part, before doing the diagnosis they said 3 different problems, when they gave me the diagnosis they said they didn't know what it was but that to begin with “it could be “ the components $13,000 to fix. but my car is under the 8 years or 100,000mls hybrid system warranty, so i contacted porshe headquarters and they said the car was out of warranty. so i called porche in Fremont (where they have mentioned the warranty on their website) and 3 people confirmed that the car is under warranty by VIN n. I called headquarters again and they said they needed this guarantee in writing. So when I called Fremont again 3 weeks later they said the car is not under warranty, meaning they changed the whole conversation within 3 weeks. I already confirmed it on CARFAX and I am under warranty but I never received any responses to emails or phone calls they are ignoring me because they don't want to assume the warranty. Fremont confirmed that I had 6 months or 19,000 miles until the warranty expired, and strangely 3 weeks later that warranty no longer appears in their system. in my opinion they don't know what the car has and they are trying to escape the warranty because there are few months left to finish, that's why they don't give me answers, I haven't tried all possible options and I can't find help to solve this problem, I'm stuck at home dor the last 3 months with 2 children without car. because my only car is at the porsche parked waiting for someone to take over the car's warranty. mentioned that the car had no accident, it was just parked in the garage and one morning it didn't start and had to be towed. Terrible costumer service

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-01
  • VIN: WP1AF2A22GK
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2016 Porsche Cayenne. The contact stated that moisture was entering the headlights on both sides of the vehicle. Over time, the condensation in the passenger’s side headlight was burned out with a message on the instrument panel. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The dealer gave the contact an estimate without a diagnostic test. The manufacturer was called and informed that they would provide a nominal portion of the repair cost. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000. The contact stated that they took their vehicle to a couple dealerships and mechanics before the issue was diagnosed as a design flaw. Therefore, simply changing the headlights out would not fix the problem.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer on multiple occasions however, the mechanic was unable to determine the cause of the failure before performing a software update to the accelerator pedal which appeared to correct the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-05
  • VIN: wp1ab2a2xgl
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: the driver receives a warning light in the instrument panel left tail light is defective, and then right tail light defective. Some times tail light works and does not when car is in cold weather Was told that both tail lights were defective and would have to be replaced at a cost of $3400.00 . Found an after sale Porsche publication saying that it affected 2015-2018 Porsche Cayenne. Dealer told me that it is no longer covered since my warranty is not in effect anymore. However this is a safety issue not a warranty issue. Have paperwork stating that Porsche knows the tail lights are defective. Since I live in Florida they have been working fine. But as soon as the car is in colder climates this starts to happen

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When slowing almost to a stop, and then need to accelerate, such as slowing for a yield sign, then trying to merge, vehicle is non responsive to throttle input for at least a second, or more. This has put me and others at risk because I assume I'm going to be able to accelerate when pull into traffic and am not able to. The dealer has had the vehicle but was unable to reproduce. It does not always do it, there's some combination of engine, drivetrain or fuel management it's in that does this. I have disabled start/stop mode. There are no system messages or OBD errors. The dealer has said that others have experienced this and the manufacturer has told them it's "normal". It's a safety problem and I'm seeking help in getting the manufacturer to fix it. Note, I sent the attached letter to manufacturer and did not receive a reply. I called their customer support line around Sept 20th and they did not offer any escalation or other action to address other than writing to their email address. I did this, and received no response.

Negative 2016 Porsche Cayenne car reviews

  1. Frederick Kohler 2024-11-04

I used to own an X5 4.4, and in my experience, the Cayenne doesn't quite match up in terms of handling and comfort. I personally don't think it's worth the money.

  2. Xzavier Fahey 2024-11-04

I recently ordered this car as I am a huge Porsche fan. However, I must say that I am disappointed with the infotainment system on this car (not SUV). The weather only shows large cities and not the current location, and there are no headlight washers, unlike the VW and Audi variants. Additionally, the traction system is not up to par as the car drives in rear-wheel drive until it slips. Furthermore, there is no center or rear locker on the diesel or hybrid, which is a weight-saving measure. The car was priced at 88K, and unfortunately, the dealer cannot offer me a deal on a different car due to the restrictions on diesel sales. As a result, I have decided to cancel my plans to upgrade my 2012 911 GTS. Thank you for your understanding.

  3. Felix Schimmel 2024-08-06

I traded my Range Rover for this car as I wanted a newer model and thought diesel would be an economical alternative since I also own a Tesla Model S. However, I have been disappointed with the car since the day I bought it. I paid $90k, as you know Porsche options can climb high from the base 60k price. I was hoping to like it as much as I loved my Range Rover, but it has terrible turbo lag and an uncomfortable ride. Then the dieselgate scandal erupted, and now I feel stuck with a worthless car. The dealerships have only offered me $45k for a car I bought a year ago for $90k, so I cannot trade it for the Range Rover I really want. I am frustrated with the service as well. All dealerships make you feel like you are nothing because you don't own a 911. You have to wait three weeks for a service appointment and every 5k miles for diesel, only 15k miles intervals for Range Rover diesels. The $300 oil change is painful as you have no loaner and have to wait 8 hours in the dealership, and this is true for more than one place. I have called multiple Pittsburgh dealers, and this is the answer I get. When I called Porsche North America customer service, they said the only thing they can do for me is giving me an extended warranty, which I originally bought at purchase. They said they would note that and try to do better for me, but months later, I have not received any calls. Although I am disappointed with my experience, I hope that Porsche can provide me with a solution so that I can move on from this situation.

  4. Justus Rempel 2024-07-03

Hi there! I noticed that your car is making noise by a speaker and dripping a lot of water on the floor when plugged in overnight due to AC cooling the battery. Have you considered taking it to a mechanic to get it checked out? They might be able to help you fix these issues. Let me know if you need any further assistance!

  5. Jordon Kovacek 2024-02-21

We recently repaired a 2016 Porsche that was purchased in the fall of 2015. While working on it, we noticed some design flaws that could be improved. For example, the battery is located under the seat and accessing the exhaust requires a lot of labor, including the removal of a body panel. Unfortunately, even a minor accident caused damage to the rear passenger seats bolt that secures them to the floor. However, we were impressed that the airbags did not go off in the accident, which shows that they are designed to only deploy when necessary. Although the repairs were costly, we believe that this car has a lot of potential and can be a great investment for those who are willing to put in the effort. As part of the VW family, we expect nothing but the best from Porsche and we are confident that they will continue to improve their engineering in the future.

Have had many luxury SUV's (LR,BMW & MB); hands down the Porsche Cayenne Diesel is the best of the bunch. Still as solid as a rock! No issues. Gets 35 MPG on a Trip! Fit & Finish is great! After 5 years won't even consider selling it.

The car is great, however, I am disappointed with its MPG and the time it takes to charge while driving.

Hey there! Before you make any decisions, why not check out Edmunds' prices first?
