Honda Ridgeline problems

The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.
First generation (YK1; 2006)
The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).
The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.
Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.
Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

Common Honda Ridgeline problems
The Honda Ridgeline, a compact truck known for its utility and fuel efficiency, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.
Another common problem with the Honda Ridgeline is the transmission failing to shift into fourth gear, which can cause a vibration around 40 mph and a noticeable hesitation from the truck.
The Honda Ridgeline's tailgate has also been reported to have issues, with the swing-out function breaking and making the in-bed trunk inaccessible.
Additionally, some Honda Ridgeline owners have reported noise and shuddering whenever they steer their trucks around a tight corner, which has been traced back to the rear differential.
In summary, the Honda Ridgeline has several common problems, including engine issues, transmission problems, tailgate issues, and rear differential problems.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-15
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
- VIN: 5FPYK3F70LB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: Scheduled my vehicle for recall related to the tailgate/camera/rear area warning system harness replacement for today 10-15-2024 after two notices. Upon arriving for my appointment, I learned that the dealer, Voyles Honda Marietta, GA does not have the parts, nor can they provide a time/date when parts would be available. Further, the Service Manager, Marvin, said the same parts issue is present with a fuel pump and electric steering campaign currently released. From prior involvement with many heavy truck campaign recalls, I know the O.E.M. Is required to have adequate repair parts to satisfy the released safety recall. In the previously noted Honda recalls this requirement is ignored by the manufacturer placing safety concern on the public, stressing dealers, and forcing vehicle owners to operate defective vehicles because parts to repair are not available, nor is there an expected date when they will be. Responses like “on manufacturer back order “ is not acceptable for a released National Safety Recall. Honda Corporate needs to be held accountable and owners need to be compensated for their inconvenience. Maybe restrict Honda from selling more vehicles until ALL safety campaigns are completed. NHTSA, check your records on Honda’s completion performance and take appropriate actions.

Honda Ridgeline 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-09
- VIN: 5FPYK3F70KB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I am writing to bring to your attention a significant issue I have encountered with my 2019 Honda Ridgeline, which recently suffered a catastrophic engine failure from a seized connecting rod bearing, resulting in a blown engine. With virtually no warning, the dash lights illuminated and the engine lost power and started smoking while on the freeway. A 911 was called and police and fire responded. The engine compartment was drenched with water in an effort to prevent a fire. Any delay in emergency services response would have certainly resulted in a fire and possible accident or injury. The vehicle was towed to and is currently at my local Honda dealer who confirmed the cause of the engine failure. I was informed that there was a recall issued for this exact problem for 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgelines, however my VIN was not included in the recall even though my vehicle experienced the same engine problems. Allstate insurance inspected the vehicle and confirmed the cause of the failure. Additionally, after researching this issue I found that there are numerous 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgeline owners who have also experienced the same exact issues. I would like to understand why my vehicle was not included in this recall and if there is anything that the NHTSA can do to get it covered. I was told by Honda America that you have the authority to expand the recall. .

I do not even notice the presence of our small travel trailer (weighing approximately 3000 lbs) while towing it. Although we appreciate the ample storage space, we would prefer more comfortable seats for extended journeys. Additionally, we would prefer a 2WD instead of a continuous 4WD for improved fuel efficiency.

I have 14K on my Ridgeline RTX. So far, the swing out tailgate latch and the rear seat vent have broken, but overall it's been okay. I've towed boats and trailers with no problems and the brakes work well while towing. However, the fuel mileage drops to 10 MPG or less. It shifts a lot even without a trailer, which can be annoying. I think the engine could handle it if the transmission would wait to drop out of high gear. I did notice some torque steer when passing, which surprised me and made me swerve, but the trunk is awesome. It drives and parks like a car and while the fuel mileage is only so-so, averaging 17-18 and 19-20 on the highway, functionally the truck is great. It may not be the prettiest truck out there, and my buddies make fun of it, but it's really practical and does what I need it to do.

I bought this truck a year ago with 100k miles and have been using it as my daily commuter. It's been a great replacement for my old Dodge V8 truck, which I loved. Although I sometimes miss the rowdy V8 exhaust rumble and engine torque, this truck is incomparable. The Ridgeline has been fantastic in the snow, mud, and rain. It has a comfortable ride and a powertrain that suits the vehicle. It sits high enough to feel like a proper truck and has proven to be very durable. My colleagues at work tease me about it, but they appreciate the truck's functionality. Recently, I had to drive in freezing snow for a couple of days, and I never felt the truck lose traction. I would definitely buy this truck again.

Great mid size pickup! It rides like a dream, almost like a Cadillac. It's also really fun to drive. I have a horse and sometimes need to pick up and haul things for him, and this truck is perfect for that. The only downside is that it doesn't come with an OEM locking tailgate, but I found a solution with the pop and lock PL8600 which gives me a locking tailgate. Overall, I'm really happy that I purchased this truck for myself!

I've been the proud owner of my 2010 Ridgeline for about a month now and I absolutely love it! Before this, I had a Mazda 2300 which did its job, but with my kids growing up, I needed a crew cab. After doing a lot of research, I found that the Ridgeline was the best choice among trucks. I considered the F-150 and the Silverado, but the Ridgeline was the clear winner. It has all the room I need to comfortably accommodate back seat passengers and it offers a smooth, car-like ride. Plus, it's very fuel-efficient, getting an impressive 19-21 mpg. Although I don't pull or trail anything, it's great to know that I can if I need to, thanks to its 4 by 4 capabilities.

On November 17, 2017, we purchased a brand new 2018 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E, VIN 5FPYK3F75JB007572, for a cash price of $42,560.00 from Buerkle Honda. Despite the initial excitement, we noticed an air noise coming from the driver's side front window as soon as we hit 45 mph. We immediately contacted the dealer and scheduled an appointment with their warranty manager. During the visit on November 24, 2017, a technician test drove the vehicle and heard the noise. They identified the problem as a trim panel on the driver's side door and replaced it. Although the noise seemed to have disappeared, it returned as soon as we drove off the lot. Over the next week, my wife drove the vehicle to work and back, and the noise persisted, even at low speeds. After conducting our own tests with a sound meter, we contacted Buerkle again and scheduled another appointment with the warranty manager on December 12, 2017. During this visit, the technician confirmed that the noise was still present and informed us that it was inherent in the vehicle. He even let my wife test drive another new Ridgeline, which also had the same issue. Despite our disappointment, we appreciate the honesty of the technician and the dealership. We will consider writing to Honda to address this issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter. After numerous attempts to address the issues with my Honda vehicle, I received a call from North American Honda on 1-8-2018 at 1:16 p.m. Central Standard Time. During the call, the representative acknowledged my concerns and stated that the issue was with Honda's design and engineering. While the air conditioning was initially not functioning, it was promptly repaired by the dealer. However, there have been ongoing issues with the vehicle suddenly flashing a warning to brake while driving on flat, smooth, dry, paved roads at 55 mph. Despite taking it back to the dealer, the issue persists. As a confident Honda customer, I trust that this matter will be resolved in a timely and satisfactory manner.

At 3,000 miles, the truck experienced a transmission fault and was unable to come out of park. Despite the dealer's claim of fixing the issue, it recurred 90 miles from home. Unfortunately, Honda Roadside was unable to provide assistance, leaving me to handle the situation myself after taking a day off from work. Although a second dealer replaced the transmission module and the truck is now running smoothly, my confidence in its reliability has been shaken. While the truck is otherwise good, reliability is the most important aspect of any vehicle, and this one falls short. In hindsight, I should have chosen Toyota.

It snowed then thawed, then froze again. When I went to fill up my tank at the gas station, I noticed that the cheap plastic flap on the capless fuel filler had broken off. It turned out that water had gotten between the outer plastic fuel flap and the inner stainless steel flap, causing it to freeze and block the filler path. Luckily, there was a Honda dealer just four blocks away. They were able to replace the defective plastic parts under warranty and I got my car back the very next day. The dealership even washed my car for me, but when I went to fill up my tank, I noticed that there was water from the car wash trapped between the two flaps. Unfortunately, this seems to happen every time it rains (which is quite frequent in the Pacific NW). I've seen many complaints on Honda owners' forums about frozen/leaking fuel fillers, but there don't seem to be any solutions from Honda. My solution may be to wrap a plastic bag around the fuel filler and secure it with a rubber band to keep water and dirt out. Honda, please take note - with RTL-E plus tax and license plus extended warranty approaching $50k, a functional fuel filler should be a given.

I have experienced issues with the sensors twice, both times due to the sensor compartment getting wet. The first time was during a rainy drive, and the second time was after a car wash. I have been informed that the unit will be replaced with new parts. However, given that other individuals have reported similar issues, it may be necessary for Honda to re-examine this area of the design. Although I paid cash for my vehicle and love the truck, I cannot tolerate this recurring issue.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my new import vehicle. While the performance is great and it's a lot of fun to drive, I have to admit that I'm not completely sold on it yet. Driving it in the snow is an absolute dream and it tows my medium sized tent trailer with ease, but I've found that the front seats aren't very comfortable on long drives and my back ends up feeling pretty sore. Additionally, I've had a few issues with the tailgate that have required multiple trips to the dealership to fix, and even after all that, the problem still isn't completely resolved. After about a year of use, the driver door seal wore out and had to be replaced. Lastly, I've noticed that the paint is quite soft and scratches easily, so I would recommend avoiding darker colors if possible. Overall, while I'm not completely satisfied with my purchase, I'm hopeful that things will improve over time. Thanks for listening!
