Honda Ridgeline problems

The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.
First generation (YK1; 2006)
The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).
The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.
Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.
Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

Common Honda Ridgeline problems
The Honda Ridgeline, a compact truck known for its utility and fuel efficiency, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.
Another common problem with the Honda Ridgeline is the transmission failing to shift into fourth gear, which can cause a vibration around 40 mph and a noticeable hesitation from the truck.
The Honda Ridgeline's tailgate has also been reported to have issues, with the swing-out function breaking and making the in-bed trunk inaccessible.
Additionally, some Honda Ridgeline owners have reported noise and shuddering whenever they steer their trucks around a tight corner, which has been traced back to the rear differential.
In summary, the Honda Ridgeline has several common problems, including engine issues, transmission problems, tailgate issues, and rear differential problems.
What issues does the Honda Ridgeline have?
A/C and Heater Problems
Some models of Ridgeline have an issue where the heater or A/C system doesn't kick on when it should. This problem is mostly about driver comfort in the cab, and some drivers may choose not to have the issue addressed, especially if they were thinking about upgrading soon anyway.
What are the negatives of the Honda Ridgeline?
Cons of the Honda Ridgeline:
Towing Capacity: While the Ridgeline offers respectable towing capabilities for light-duty tasks, it falls short compared to some of its competitors in the midsize truck segment, making it less suitable for heavy towing needs.
What year is Ridgeline best?
If you're looking for a used Honda Ridgeline, you have several model years to choose from. First-generation models ranging from 2009 to 2012 are known for their reliability, but second-generation models ranging from 2018 to the present are also good choices.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-15
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-15
- VIN: 5FPYK3F70LB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: Scheduled my vehicle for recall related to the tailgate/camera/rear area warning system harness replacement for today 10-15-2024 after two notices. Upon arriving for my appointment, I learned that the dealer, Voyles Honda Marietta, GA does not have the parts, nor can they provide a time/date when parts would be available. Further, the Service Manager, Marvin, said the same parts issue is present with a fuel pump and electric steering campaign currently released. From prior involvement with many heavy truck campaign recalls, I know the O.E.M. Is required to have adequate repair parts to satisfy the released safety recall. In the previously noted Honda recalls this requirement is ignored by the manufacturer placing safety concern on the public, stressing dealers, and forcing vehicle owners to operate defective vehicles because parts to repair are not available, nor is there an expected date when they will be. Responses like “on manufacturer back order “ is not acceptable for a released National Safety Recall. Honda Corporate needs to be held accountable and owners need to be compensated for their inconvenience. Maybe restrict Honda from selling more vehicles until ALL safety campaigns are completed. NHTSA, check your records on Honda’s completion performance and take appropriate actions.

Honda Ridgeline 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-09
- VIN: 5FPYK3F70KB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I am writing to bring to your attention a significant issue I have encountered with my 2019 Honda Ridgeline, which recently suffered a catastrophic engine failure from a seized connecting rod bearing, resulting in a blown engine. With virtually no warning, the dash lights illuminated and the engine lost power and started smoking while on the freeway. A 911 was called and police and fire responded. The engine compartment was drenched with water in an effort to prevent a fire. Any delay in emergency services response would have certainly resulted in a fire and possible accident or injury. The vehicle was towed to and is currently at my local Honda dealer who confirmed the cause of the engine failure. I was informed that there was a recall issued for this exact problem for 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgelines, however my VIN was not included in the recall even though my vehicle experienced the same engine problems. Allstate insurance inspected the vehicle and confirmed the cause of the failure. Additionally, after researching this issue I found that there are numerous 2017 and 2019 Honda Ridgeline owners who have also experienced the same exact issues. I would like to understand why my vehicle was not included in this recall and if there is anything that the NHTSA can do to get it covered. I was told by Honda America that you have the authority to expand the recall. .

I recently purchased the 2022 Ridgeline after test driving several vehicles. As someone who has never owned a truck before, I was initially skeptical, but this is not your ordinary truck. The Ridgeline offers all the style of an SUV with the added benefit of cargo space. I patiently waited for the perfect exterior and interior color combination and was thrilled when I found it. After a few trips to Home Depot and Lowes, I am so glad I made this decision. The two-way tailgate is a versatile gem and the Ridgeline's unibody chassis, fully independent suspension, and torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system make for a quiet and firm driving experience. It is unrivaled among midsize pickups and the benefits of being a car-based truck really shine through. The vehicle feels stable and composed around turns, making it a pleasure to drive. I can confidently say that it is reliable and I highly recommend taking it for a test drive. I have read stories of long wait times and poor inventory, but in the Charlotte NC area, inventory is surprisingly fair with most dealers having some inventory. UPDATE: After owning two full-size SUVs, we decided to purchase the 2022 Honda Ridgeline for our road trips with family and our dog. After six months, we are totally convinced that we made the correct decision. The vehicle looks great, the interior is comfortable, and it drives well. It hauls enough and is perfect for our local trips to Home Depot or Lowes.

Headlights on this vehicle are not as good as the 2018 Toyota I traded in. The high beam uses a halogen bulb (yellow light) and the low beam uses a dull LED white light. However, I was able to improve the situation by purchasing new LED bulbs. Additionally, the passenger seat cannot be adjusted up or down, which makes it difficult for my wife to reach the floor with her feet. Overall, I believe this vehicle has some areas for improvement, but I am confident that with some adjustments it will be a great car.

The 2020 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E was my top choice after weeks of shopping around and test driving other trucks. I occasionally tow a smaller boat and make trips to home improvement stores. Living in a seasonal climate, I encounter a fair share of snow, but the Ridgeline easily handles everything I've encountered so far. I absolutely love it! The comfort and luxury of a high-end SUV combined with a bonus pickup bed, not to mention all the unique features this truck has, including a two-way locking tailgate, trunk in bed, and convenience charging/power ports. The safety features are also top-notch! I believe the Ridgeline is underrated as a pickup truck, and I was initially hesitant to even consider it, but I quickly changed my mind after test driving it myself. If you're in the market for a pickup truck, I highly recommend test driving a Ridgeline before making your final decision. I know this review may sound like a Honda commercial, but I assure you, I'm being completely honest! Best of luck. -Frank

I have driven Chevy, Ford, and Dodge pickups before switching to the Honda. The Honda Ridgeline is the perfect fit for our family's needs. The ride is smoother than any other vehicle I have owned or test-driven. The 6-cylinder engine offers great acceleration and a 5000-pound towing capacity, which is more than enough for my needs. The heated leather seats are adjustable to any position I need and I can even preset my own adjustment as well as one for my wife. The rear seats can accommodate average-sized people with no problem, and even a 6+ footer could fit if necessary. It would be nice if the rear doors opened wider, though. The lockable waterproof trunk in the floor of the truck bed provides exceptional space, and the dual-action tailgate should be an industry standard. The technology in this vehicle is fantastic and has helped me become a safer driver. The biggest bonus with this truck is the MPG. Previous reviews I read said the gas mileage was in the low 20s, but I have found that by driving the speed limit with the ECON button on, I am averaging over 30 mpg on the highway (highest was 33.8) and about 26 mpg in town. I could not be more pleased with the Black Edition Honda Ridgeline and would highly recommend this truck to anyone.

Last year, my wife and I decided to replace our FJ Cruiser with a truck, and bought a new '16 Tacoma Ltd 4x4. Unfortunately, we had a lot of issues with it such as poor shifting, buzziness in the steering wheel at speed, and poor mileage. When we spoke to Toyota Corporate or the Dealership about these issues, all we got was a response of 'Functions as designed.' We were worried about how much we were going to lose trading it in, but we knew we couldn't keep driving the Tacoma. We test drove the GM twins and they were okay, but we were concerned about their reliability. A friend suggested we look at the new Ridgeline, and we were pleased to see that it didn't look like the previous generation with that wing-back design. Our local dealer had some coming in, and we were able to test drive a Pearl White RTL-E with black interior on 6/23. We were impressed with how comfortable, smooth, and quiet it was, and it had much more rear seat room than the Tacoma. It handled amazingly well and had everything we could want in a mid-size pickup, including a number of unique features like the in-bed trunk, fold-up rear seats, unique dual-release tailgate, and a suite of safety features. After owning it for 3 weeks, I can unequivocally say that dumping the Tacoma and buying the Ridgeline was one of the best decisions I've ever made, even though we lost almost $5k in the transaction. I didn't realize how stressful it was to own/drive the Tacoma until we got rid of it and purchased the Ridgeline. My wife loves it too, and she did not really like the Tacoma at all. While the Tacoma looked more 'macho-trucky,' the Ridgeline has proven to be a much better fit for us.However, it didn't take me long to get used to it and I'm amazed at the compliments I receive. The Tacoma may tow more, but if you don't need to tow excessively, the RL's 5k rating is more than enough. Additionally, the RL performs better off-road in extreme conditions, such as rock crawling. In my opinion, there is nothing else that the Toyota does that the RL doesn't do much better. Unless you are an extreme off-roader or are put off by the looks (or the fact that it's a Honda truck), why would anyone even consider buying any other mid-size truck? Moreover, the Honda truck is reliable, as it's not a completely new design. The engine and transmission come from the Pilot, and they started with a Pilot 'frame' and beefed it up to handle truck duties, so it's been proven to work well and reliably. Check it out, I'm very glad I did and took the plunge.

I've owned this truck for approximately 4 years and 60k miles. I really like the size and the engine is decent. It started to feel even better at around 50k miles. It tows fine, although I haven't towed long distances and I'm towing just under the 5k lb. limit. However, I do have one issue with it - the wind noise is quite loud! I would buy it again in an instant if it were quieter inside. Honda, would it be possible to add $150 of sound insulation? Keeping the fluids fresh is important as it greatly affects gas mileage (3-4 mpg). If it were quieter, I would give it a 5 out of 5. However, it's important to note that it's not meant to replace a full-size truck, but rather fill a different niche, which it does nicely. I just wish it did it with less interior noise.

I have owned my 2020 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E for just over a year now and I am confident in saying that it is a great truck with many useful features. The dual function of the tailgate and the under bed trunk are particularly impressive. However, during a recent cold spell, I experienced some issues that were concerning. The heat to the floorboard area was completely inadequate and my gas mileage dropped significantly. I suspect that some of the lubricants are not sufficient for extreme cold temperatures. I brought these issues to the attention of the dealership where I purchased the truck and it seems that I am not the only one experiencing similar problems. Despite this, I remain confident in the overall quality of the truck and would recommend it to those living in warmer areas. For those living in colder regions, however, I would advise caution before making a purchase.

Hello! Thank you for considering my vehicle. I purchased it in late 2005 because of its extensive safety features and fuel economy within the price point. Although I have put less than 2K miles on it, I am ready to sell. The reason being, the gas mileage is running 12-13 mpg rather than the 16-21. Additionally, as a petite driver, I found the significant blind spots in the right rear due to design and rear headrest configuration made the vehicle difficult and dangerous to drive. I believe the headrest design should be improved as the curvature forward makes it very uncomfortable and many people turn them around defeating the purpose. Lastly, it is difficult to judge distance when backing up due to the blind spots. Thank you for your consideration!

My experience has been two-sided actually. From a family hauler perspective, it's great for taking the kids to after-school functions and throwing some groceries in the back on the way home. I'm glad to have the cover. However, as for a truck, I really wish I had my Silverado back, having traded it in on this. We camp in the summer and also tow the boat over to Dale Hollow on the weekends. The salesman assured me a 3500# boat would not be a problem, but unfortunately, this is not the case. The V-6 struggles to get the boat off of our street, let alone the heart attack I almost had trying to get it up a ramp. The brakes offer no confidence either when trying to bring the trailer to a halt (w/ trailer brakes!).
