2020 Honda Ridgeline problems

honda logo

The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.

First generation (YK1; 2006)

The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).

The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.

Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.

Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

Common 2020 Honda Ridgeline problems

The Honda Ridgeline, a compact pickup truck, has been a popular choice among consumers since its introduction in 2006. However, as with any vehicle, there have been reported issues and complaints from owners. This article will focus on the 2020 Honda Ridgeline and its common problems based on complaints from owners.

  • Electrical Troubles: Another common complaint among 2020 Honda Ridgeline owners is electrical issues. These problems range from horns blaring out of nowhere to issues with the forward collision sensing feature. Some owners have also reported problems with the headlights, with some vehicles experiencing premature failure. Honda had to issue a recall to address the headlight issue, which poses a safety hazard and is illegal when not functioning properly.
  • Recalls: The 2020 Honda Ridgeline has had several recalls, including issues with the side-view mirrors, hood latch striker, and tonneau covers. The side-view mirrors may not be bonded properly, causing the mirror glass to detach and reducing driver visibility. The hood latch striker may become damaged and separate from the hood, potentially obstructing the driver's view and increasing the risk of a crash. The tonneau covers, if not properly secured, may deform and separate from the vehicle, posing a road hazard.
  • Consumer Complaints: Individual consumer complaints about the 2020 Honda Ridgeline include issues with the transmission, audio controls, and overall performance. Some owners have reported glitchy transmission behavior, with weird shifting and coasting. The audio controls have been criticized for taking attention away from driving. Additionally, some owners have described the Ridgeline as slow and boring, despite its good gas mileage and attractive appearance.

In conclusion, while the 2020 Honda Ridgeline has been praised for its unique design and functionality, it has also had its share of issues and complaints from owners. Transmission problems, electrical issues, recalls, and individual consumer complaints highlight the importance of thorough research and consideration before purchasing a vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-15
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F70LB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: Scheduled my vehicle for recall related to the tailgate/camera/rear area warning system harness replacement for today 10-15-2024 after two notices. Upon arriving for my appointment, I learned that the dealer, Voyles Honda Marietta, GA does not have the parts, nor can they provide a time/date when parts would be available. Further, the Service Manager, Marvin, said the same parts issue is present with a fuel pump and electric steering campaign currently released. From prior involvement with many heavy truck campaign recalls, I know the O.E.M. Is required to have adequate repair parts to satisfy the released safety recall. In the previously noted Honda recalls this requirement is ignored by the manufacturer placing safety concern on the public, stressing dealers, and forcing vehicle owners to operate defective vehicles because parts to repair are not available, nor is there an expected date when they will be. Responses like “on manufacturer back order “ is not acceptable for a released National Safety Recall. Honda Corporate needs to be held accountable and owners need to be compensated for their inconvenience. Maybe restrict Honda from selling more vehicles until ALL safety campaigns are completed. NHTSA, check your records on Honda’s completion performance and take appropriate actions.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F78LB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I own a 2020 Honda ridgeline pick up truck. For many months, I have been aware of an existing recall on the rear view camera tailgate wire harness and have received two notices. I have been at the dealer twice to have it repaired, the last time of which they canceled my appointment the day before the repair saying they don’t have any parts and that I will hear sometime Late fall. Honda has been aware of this problem with the rear camera tailgate wire harness because of recalls on the 2017 through 2019 models. That I have received two recall notices already with Honda claiming they don’t have the parts to fix it is ridiculous. Their dilatory conduct in fixing this defect is a definite safety concern. My rearview camera does not work and Honda has failed to timely fix it pursuant to recall 24V-321.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F80LB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I experienced multiple warning lights on my dash when disengaging my cruise control on the freeway to pass a slower vehicle in front of me. Attached photo depicts these lights and a loss of dash gauges. I arranged a vehicle inspection from the purchasing dealer the next day, but later the entire dash “blacked out” losing speedometer, tachometer, turn signals, back-up camera etc. Given the uncertainty of the safe driving condition of the vehicle I opted to have a closer authorized dealer inspect the vehicle. The consensus was that there was a failure of the dash panel resulting in a $1600.00 repair. Learning that this exact failure was known to American Honda Motor Co., Inc. I reached out to their customer service since like year(s) models of the Passport, Pilot & Odyssey were part of an official warranty recall (along with extended warranty coverage) by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. to see if any goodwill assistance would be provided, given what I’m sure are shared components between the three models. Honda declined. In all transparency, I am a retired AHM employee who services my own vehicles, so their decline, I’m told was partially based on the lack of an official service history. The failure that I have described is totally unrelated to scheduled service. In closing, I am attaching a “screenshot” for a Honda Pilot Owners blog which goes into greater detail of the exact failure I experienced, described as inappropriate software programming. Again, these items in the Recall cited FMV SS101 & FMV SS111 as being key reasons for the issuance of the recall. Why the 2020 Honda Ridgeline which experienced this exact failure was excluded is a question that Honda should answer. Thank you.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-21
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F77LB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When operating the vehicle in reverse, the dashboard screen was black/blank instead of displaying the view from the rear backup camera. The issue began to occur intermittently at ~40,000 miles and the camera was completely non-operational at 42,163k miles (10/21/2023). Upon investigating and diagnosing the root cause of failure, the dealer determined that the rear backup camera wiring harness failed. The failure point was a flexible section at the rear tailgate hinge that permits opening and closing the rear tailgate. Because the dealer's total replacement cost was too expensive (>$500), the original wiring harness was repaired by the owner. At 50,185 miles, the failure is intermittently occurring again with the repaired harness. A non-operational backup camera puts pedestrians, cyclists and others at risk when the vehicle is backing up because the driver may not be aware of their presence and could strike them or cause a collision. The local dealer diagnosed the issue and subsequently sold the owner a new replacement wiring harness that has yet to be installed. The vehicle or component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem occurred prior to the failure.

Negative 2020 Honda Ridgeline car reviews

  1. Daren Kulas 2025-01-24

I have owned my 2020 Honda Ridgeline RTL-E for just over a year now and I am confident in saying that it is a great truck with many useful features. The dual function of the tailgate and the under bed trunk are particularly impressive. However, during a recent cold spell, I experienced some issues that were concerning. The heat to the floorboard area was completely inadequate and my gas mileage dropped significantly. I suspect that some of the lubricants are not sufficient for extreme cold temperatures. I brought these issues to the attention of the dealership where I purchased the truck and it seems that I am not the only one experiencing similar problems. Despite this, I remain confident in the overall quality of the truck and would recommend it to those living in warmer areas. For those living in colder regions, however, I would advise caution before making a purchase.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the E-trim level that I bought new in Jan 2020. Lately, I've noticed that the windows, including the sunroof, open on their own from time to time when I lock the truck using the key fob. While I've been lucky that this hasn't happened during a rainstorm, it could be quite a mess if rain entered through the open roof and side windows. When I reached out to Honda, they didn't have a concrete solution beyond a shrug, and suggested that I not put the key fob in my pocket after locking the truck. However, that's not a practical solution, is it? I'm sure you can relate. Unfortunately, this issue has made me reconsider buying another Ridgeline. Thank you for listening to my experience.

At 45K miles, it is recommended to have your transmission and differential oil changed (most highway). Honda suggests timing belt and water pump replacement at 60K, which can be quite expensive. It is surprising that an engine with a timing belt is still being produced in 2017. Honda's warranty handling can be disappointing and it can feel like the odds are against you. They may provide you with used or remanufactured parts, which can be frustrating. Even if you have proof of an intermittent problem, if the technician cannot replicate it, the process ends and you are left without a solution until the warranty expires. The radio/nav in the Ridgeline and other Honda cars is known to fail intermittently. If you purchase a car with this radio/nav, you may be stuck with it as it cannot be replaced with a non-Honda unit without losing the capacity to set most car parameters. Unfortunately, Honda may not stand behind their product and may replace one problematic unit with another. It is understandable that you are frustrated with Honda's corporate attitude. However, it is important to note that Honda has produced top cars in the past. Ultimately, the decision to purchase a Honda or not is up to you.

I really appreciate some of the features on my 2020 Ridgeline RTL-E, such as the great ride, interior, seats, and two-way tailgate. However, there are a few things that I don't like, which I'll point out below. For example, there is an annoying Auto stop idle feature that has to be disabled every time you drive, and there is an unnecessary ECO mode. Additionally, the no gear shift requires you to have to look every time you want to switch gears. The blindspot activation comes on too close to the rear end of your vehicle to take evasive action, and the indicators would be better if located on mirrors. The remote control features can be a bit confusing, for example, the tailgate will not unlock automatically with the fob in your pocket, and requires pressing the unlock button two times. Then, doing this will not also unlock all doors, requiring pressing unlock two more times. There is no instant radio mute on the steering wheel, requiring you to decrease the volume to lower the radio. The Bluetooth phone requires multiple commands to make a phone call. The collision monitoring system goes off continuously when going through a fast food drive-through, and can only be stopped by putting the transmission in park! If you disable adaptive cruise control, you cannot use the lane keeping feature. Finally, there are over 30 settings you have to decide on in the cumbersome and confusing NAV/Radio screen, which is all touchscreen and confusing going back and forth. Overall, unless you're a technology nut, I'd recommend a more straightforward vehicle.

The truck is of good quality overall. However, it is worth noting that the rear camera stopped working at 38100 miles, which required an expensive repair.

The Ridgeline is the perfect vehicle for you! It has a towing capacity of 5000 pounds, which is more than enough for your needs. If you need to haul heavier loads, you might want to consider a full-size pickup. The Ridgeline rides like a dream and has tremendous storage. You'll be more than happy with this vehicle!

  2. Arvid Bogisich 2024-11-08

It's great to see that this vehicle drives like a sophisticated high-end car while still being able to do everything you'd expect from a heavy-duty truck. Additionally, the tailgate party compartment is fantastic for secure storage.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Honda Ridgeline truck! It's great to hear that it drives like a car and is easier to maneuver than your previous GMC Canyon. The composite truck bed and hidden cooler under the bed are really nice touches, and it's fantastic that there's ample room in the back seat area to transport your bicycle. The storage is also much better than other trucks you considered. It sounds like you made a great decision in choosing the Ridgeline. Plus, with plenty of room in the back, you can haul items without using the truck bed!

I had the pleasure of test driving both the 2020 Ridgeline and the Tacoma on the same day. I must say, the Ridgeline is an excellent vehicle. After careful consideration, I narrowed my truck search down to the Ridgeline and the Tacoma, and Honda's reliability (I've owned 3 Hondas) was a significant factor in my decision. I was particularly impressed with the fold-away rear seats, two-way tailgate, under-bed storage, and sunroof. While there were a few things I wasn't fond of, such as the 5 ft bed and gearshift knob, the most significant issue for me was the difficult rear sight lines. This was especially important to me as I have a long driveway and back into my garage every night. Overall, I believe the Ridgeline is an excellent vehicle.

I'm so glad you're considering the Ridgeline! Based on my experience test driving most mid-size truck options, I can confidently say that the Ridgeline is the clear winner. Its drive experience is unparalleled compared to its competitors, making it the perfect truck for what most trucks actually get used for.
