2008 Honda Ridgeline problems
The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.
First generation (YK1; 2006)
The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).
The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.
Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.
Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

Common 2008 Honda Ridgeline problems
The 2008 Honda Ridgeline has been known to have several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues range from exhaust system problems to transmission and electrical troubles.
- Transmission Issues: The 2008 Honda Ridgeline has faced transmission problems, with many owners reporting issues such as the transmission refusing to shift into the fourth gear, malfunctioning intermittently, and experiencing excessive vibrations while on the road. These issues are often attributed to a faulty torque converter. Some owners have reported that a software update fixed the transmission issues, while others have not been so lucky.
- Electrical Troubles: Electrical issues are another common problem reported by Honda Ridgeline owners. These issues include horns blaring out of nowhere, problems with the forward collision sensing feature, and headlights stopping to work after a few years. Honda had to issue a recall to address the headlight issue, as it posed a significant safety hazard for drivers.
- Airbags: The 2008 Honda Ridgeline has had issues with airbags, with some owners reporting that the airbags deployed unexpectedly or without any apparent reason. This can be a significant safety concern for drivers and passengers, as unexpected airbag deployment can cause injuries.
- HVAC Wiring: Another common problem reported by Honda Ridgeline owners is issues with the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) wiring. This problem is a wiring issue, which can be time-consuming and expensive to fix, despite being a relatively simple problem to solve. This issue is most common in the 2008 Ridgeline but can occur in any model from around that time.
- Peeling Paint: Some 2008 Honda Ridgeline owners have reported issues with the paint peeling off the vehicle. This can be an aesthetic concern for drivers, but it can also lead to more significant problems if the underlying metal is exposed to the elements, as it can lead to rust and corrosion.
In summary, the 2008 Honda Ridgeline has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include exhaust system problems, transmission troubles, electrical issues, airbag malfunctions, HVAC wiring problems, and peeling paint. While some of these issues can be relatively simple to fix, others can be more complex and expensive, requiring significant repairs or replacements.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-02
- VIN: 2HJYK16518H
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: My 2008 Honda RIdgeline has a frame rusted to the point where it has been deemed unsafe to drive by my local Honda dealership and Honda USA. My 2008 Honda Ridgeline is PA titled and was involved in recall 22V-430 (NHTSA recall number) / 22-021 (Honda recall number). I took my truck into Wright Honda (Uniontown, PA) on June 2nd, 2023 for the 2006-2014 Ridgeline Rear Frame Repair Safety Recall. The truck is available for inspection, and Honda USA has several pictures of the frame problems that they evaluated. When Wright Honda performed the recall work, they informed me that the frame rust is so severe that it is not safe to drive and it will not pass inspection; they recommended that I tow it home (at my expense, which is what I had to do). I asked them if my truck might be considered for a buyback. They told me that Honda USA did request more pictures and that someone from Honda USA would be in touch with me. Basically, after speaking to a case manager and supervisor, Honda USA told me that the frame corrosion is my responsibility because they performed their recall. The Honda USA technician Eric (4605592) agreed that the frame rust is so bad that is should not be driven on a road. So although multiple parties at Honda agree that my frame rust is so severe that I can no longer drive the truck, and there is a recall regarding frame rust on my Ridgeline, Honda refuses to take responsibility and either replace the frame or buy it back. The recall was to prevent the gas tank from falling off and catching fire. I think it is equally important for Honda to take care of frames that may break while driving, killing everyone in the truck, when it is known that the frame corrosion is already a problem because of a Honda quality control issue.

2008 Honda Ridgeline recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2008 Honda Ridgeline.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame mounting surface, where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached, to corrode and possibly detach the fuel tank, which can result in a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is LCD.

The truck is a powerful machine. If you're not interested in a diesel, consider this gas truck.

Wow! It's amazing how much there is to say, but so little space to say it in! I've been researching this segment for nearly five years now, and I have to say, I'm really impressed with the Honda Ridgeline. I was originally looking for a Tacoma, but even with the low car sales plaguing the industry, Toyota didn't seem interested in making a deal. However, Honda immediately offered me an incredible deal on this 08 RTS, and I didn't need any more incentive- I snatched it up! This is an incredibly smart truck- all the space is usable, and the seats are comfortable, even in the back. I was concerned about the back seats because this often-overlooked space is easiest to get the cheapest attention (like the Chevy Colorado). But the Honda Ridgeline has absolutely the smartest design in this category (if you're looking for heavy hauling, look to full-size trucks). It fits me like a glove, and I absolutely love it!

I recently downsized from a Suburban and decided to go with a Honda. I have been really impressed with the Honda so far. It rides well and seems to be quite reasonable with regard to fuel economy. While there are a few things that I think Honda could improve upon, overall I am quite satisfied with my purchase. For example, I have found that the HomeLink buttons are not lighted and can be tough to find at night. Additionally, I think that fog-lights should certainly be standard on the RTL. I was also disappointed to find that only the bottom cushion of the front passenger seat is heated due to the side-impact airbags. Other manufacturers have figured out how to heat the entire seat, so I think Honda should give them a call. Finally, while the stereo is good, it is not quite as good as the one in the top-of-the-line Pilot. Honda, please take note: truckers like to rock out too! All in all, I think that the Honda is a great vehicle for the money!

Hey there! I drive 200 miles round trip every day, mostly on the highway with my cruise control on. At first, my mileage was low, but after putting about 15,000 miles on the truck, I now regularly get 22MPG while cruising at 70, with my highest being 23.9! I've found that the power is quite good, but some folks might get the impression that it doesn't have low-end power because the VSA system intrudes too much. However, if you switch the button off, the truck will launch hard, indicating that Honda should rethink the programming. My biggest complaints are the lack of a telescoping wheel that would allow me to rest my elbows on the door and console pad without feeling like I'm reaching, and the seat comfort is a bit misleading; it's way too hard. But overall, I'm still a big fan and will be the first in line for a new dturbo diesel!

I've been a proud owner of Honda Accords for the past 27 years. Recently, I decided to switch things up and purchased a brand new 2008 Honda Ridgeline RTL. Let me tell you, I absolutely adore my Accords, but the Ridgeline takes the cake. It's truly the best vehicle I've ever owned. Honda never fails to deliver superior quality and performance.

I purchased this used with 237K on the odometer to replace a more valuable Toyota Tacoma that wasn't seeing much use. My idea was to have a weekend truck that could otherwise see limited use at a lower cost. The Ridgeline is far more refined than the Tacoma, but it has its complexities that come at a cost. I had to sort out LOTS of problems with the Ridgeline, which are almost all common to other owners. For instance, I had a bad wheel bearing that required an entirely rebuilt front end due to severe corrosion. Most of the dash lights were burnt out, and the 'leather' seats were worn and cracking. Two window regulators don't work, and there were electrical gremlins, broken and rattling heat shields, failing radiator, and severe rust spots on welded seams on every door and door frame. There was also a minor leak in the main seal, and the list goes on. Although I expected some wear, the 3 Toyota trucks/SUVs I've owned and driven beyond 250K never had this many issues. It's been decades since I had a vehicle that required regular manual valve adjustments (really?!). Toss in the fact that this vehicle gets relatively poor mileage, and it's been fairly disappointing. If I'd spent more than I did on this, I'd be very unhappy. As it is, I'm only modestly disappointed and somewhat miss my Toyotas.

The vehicle may not be suitable for those with long legs and short arms, and some customers have reported that Honda's famous 'fit and finish' is lacking. Additionally, some drivers have found the vehicle to be underpowered at 245hp and 4500 lbs, with a fuel economy of only 14 in town, rather than the advertised 17. While Honda's implementation of 4WD has received mixed reviews, the in-bed storage is a large plus. Overall, some customers may prefer a vehicle with a better hp/weight ratio, which could also improve fuel mileage. However, it's important to note that the vehicle has some positive features and may still be a good fit for some drivers. It's always a good idea to carefully consider your options before making a purchase decision.

I was thrilled when I first brought home my ridgeline! However, I encountered some issues when the first sleet and ice storm hit. I was coming home from work that night at 10 pm and couldn't get the defroster to melt the ice off the windshield. I had to pull over several times before I got home to scrape the window. Despite my feet being freezing, my mechanic explained that I could either have warm feet and not much windshield defrost or vice versa. Unfortunately, I also experienced a few other problems such as the steering box under the left front wheel breaking at about 7,000 miles and the rear left lens cover letting water into the tail light. To top it off, the heat/ac completely stopped working at 26,000 miles. Needless to say, I've become quite close with my mechanic. However, I'm still a loyal Toyota customer and will definitely be coming back!
