2017 Honda Ridgeline problems

The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.

First generation (YK1; 2006)

The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).

The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.

Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.

Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

Common 2017 Honda Ridgeline problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Honda Ridgeline 2017, several common problems have been reported:

  • Tailgate Malfunction: Some owners have reported issues with the tailgate getting stuck in either the up or down position, particularly affecting the swing-out function. This problem can impact access to the in-bed trunk storage. The root cause is often a sensor rod being too long, which can be fixed for a cost ranging from $88 to $111.
  • Differential Problems: Another common complaint involves jerky movements and noise while turning, originating from the rear axle's differential. This issue, present in models from 2006 to 2010, is caused by the breakdown of the differential fluid. Replacing the factory differential fluid with a higher-quality alternative can resolve this problem, with an average cost of $79 to $93.

These issues highlight some of the challenges faced by Honda Ridgeline 2017 owners, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any emerging problems to ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F72HB
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Sunroof randomly exploded I was traveling on a highway and we heard a very loud “pop”. We at first thought we were hit by someone else, or blew a tire. Neither occurred but then heard wind and noticed the sunroof not only shattered, but blew outward. There were glass shards all around. We have taken it to the dealership and they said while other vehicles have had problems, the Ridgeline is not under a recall. I took pictures as to document what occurred. There was absolutely no warning that it was about to happened, either through the vehicle warning system or noises prior to the loud pop. It simply came out of no where and scared us immensely until we recognized what had happened.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-14
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F79HB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Our 2017 Honda Ridgeline started making a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. We took it to our local mechanic, who determined the engine rod bearing had failed and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken to the local Honda dealer for repair in case it was covered under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V751000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The dealer diagnosed that the engine rod bearing had failed and the engine needed to be replaced, but would not cover cost of the repair since the truck's VIN was not included in the recall even though the truck had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The truck had only 72,000 miles on it and had been regularly maintained. Per my mechanic, it should not have failed in this manner. In fact, he'd never seen a failure like this on a relatively low mile vehicle that had been maintained. I believe that the recall needs to be re-examined to see if the scope needs to be broadened to include more VINs. Based on my mechanics input and the nature of the current recall, I don't believe this failure was just an "bad luck" outlier.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-07
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F81HB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle appears to have rod bearing failure and is available for inspection. Myself and family are at risk for being in a serious accident and/or stranded should catastrophic engine failure occur. Problem has been reproduced and confirmed by dealer (Howdy Honda Austin, TX). There is an existing technical service bulletin (TSB 24-002) for this issue and dealer believes my vehicle is affected, but my VIN does not show in affected VIN database. Vehicle has been inspected, but not affected part since that would require opening up the engine block. No warnings, just the engine knock which showed up a couple months ago. Besides taking vehicle to dealer for inspection, vehicle has been parked.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-27
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F6XHB
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On our way home the motor started ticking loudly and more and more loss of power. All the dash lights came on with the check engine light. We called the dealer and they said to bring it in. We babied it another mile and could no longer go more than 20 mph. We pulled over as soon as we could and the motor couldn’t go any more. Had it towed to the dealership and they said the whole fuel injection system failed and then discovered the rod bearings were destroyed. The car only had 84,000 miles on it and we have only owned it since November of 2023 we had the last service done at the dealership. I know the VIN isn’t right for the recall of the 2017 Ridgelines rod bearings but so many other people have had the same problem. I feel it should at least be looked into more. I do not have a repair invoice yet because it is still at the dealership waiting for a motor to be delivered to put in it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-19
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F58HB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: There was an engine failure with a rod bearing in the engine. I believe the engine is still available at the shop that replaced it for review. I have already raised this issue with Honda and they were not interested in seeing the motor. The truck stalled out on the highway on the way to work during high traffic time. The truck was looked at by an independent auto repair shop. After the failure the engine did restart, and it was obvious by the noise that it had a bearing failure. There were no symptoms that the engine would fail before failure. at the time of the failure the engine light did come on. After the failure I learned that this exact year and model of truck had a recall for the exact issue that I had. I contacted Honda dealership before I had the repair completed and they said they would reach out to the Honda representative to see if there was anything they were willing to do. Nobody got back to me until several weeks later after I contacted Honda customer service on 3/21/24. Honda customer service sent me an email on 4/11/2024 after the engine was replaced. I was told since the engine was already replaced there was nothing they could do. I believe that Honda knows that this bearing recall affects many more vehicles including mine and are trying to save money by not releasing the true scope of the vehicles that may be affected. I will attach a copy of the bill for the engine replacement.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-12
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F86HB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: While driving the automatic transmission would shift hard causing a lurching motion with the truck. This has happened multiple times and is a known to Honda. It did it again recently shifting hard or not shifting which is a problem in traffic where cars are moving faster speed I almost had someone hit me from behind because as the truck accelerates it suddenly stops and lurches forward like popping a clutch in a standard. Then the emission control light came on, check transmission light came on, bsi light came on and on the display where it indicates P D R L it the P symbol with an X through it. I was in heavy traffic and felt lucky not to be in an accident

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-15
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F74HB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The collision mitigation Braking System has activated my brakes resulting in a lock up 3 times and I've only owned the truck for 2 months. One of the times I was rear ended do to the trucking stopping suddenly. I now have to drive with the system turned off because of how dangerous it is to have on.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F87HB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: - Door actuators - specifically back door actuators. Both back door actuators are failing, one almost never works (sometimes locks, never unlocks) and the other one is more sporadic. The front passenger door also went a week a few months ago that it was not consistently working. - Safety - 1- the actuators inconsistently work and either leave the car unsecured while moving/parked. 2- because the doors at times only manually lock my 3 year old can open the door. I have changed the side of the car I have her car seat on so I can reach behind me if it does not lock. 3- A younger kid cannot unlock the doors because they are much harder to push after they malfunctioned. Sometimes they become completely jammed and I have to push on it really hard while operating the handle... it is challenging for an adult, let alone a child. I really can't live with not fixing them as my kids would be trapped in an emergency situation. - Yes, dealer confirmed it was the actuator, but could only get back passenger door to fail during the visit. - No, just the dealer who gave me a quote to fix it. Quote was for almost $800 for both back doors, plus $80 to "diagnose" what I already told them which was the actuators did not work. I have it scheduled to be replaced for half that price at a different shop next week. This seemed like a crazy price to not have my kids trapped in the car. This sounds like a common issue in forums and since both of mine have failed (plus maybe the front passenger door too) it doesn't seem like bad luck of 1 part. - No I am not exactly sure when it started. I think the back passenger door has been awhile, my auto-start stopped working but the door awhile ago and I think this was the reason. I didn't realize it until last summer when I went to open the door when someone opened my door when I knew the truck was locked.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F75HB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Rod bearings failed, leaving metal shards in the pistons which causes engine the to overheat and seize or catch fire. The engine noise was getting increasingly loud over a 3 day period so I took it into the dealership (Honda of Seattle) and they found rod bearings had worn apart and were floating around inside the engine. This requires a full engine replacement. There were no warning lamps.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-05
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F56HB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Over the past 15 months, our 2017 Honda Ridgeline has been at the Honda dealership service for over 90 days, or 20% of the elapsed time. A 2nd replacement of the torque converter (3rd unit) in March 2024 has not resolved the judder/vibration, which does not occur when the engine temperature is cold. The vibration is consistently recurring once the engine has reached nominal operating temperature, when the transmission is in 4th-5th gear around 1800 RPM, 30-50 MPH. Based on the dealership-attempted fixes, the dealer believes the issue is due to Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) and Active Control Mount (ACM) degradation. The dealer, in contact with Honda tech line, have no known fix to this systemic defect. The vehicle has been 100% serviced at Fisher Honda per the factory maintenance schedule. All recommended and required service, including Technical Service Bulletins and Recalls have been performed and are up-to-date. Reference earlier NHTSA ID 11554673 (Nov 2023).

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-08
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F76HB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The check engine light came on while driving on the highway. I then pulled over to check oil and coolant levels. The coolant was down but not empty, so I topped it up. I then restarted the truck and the engine was down on power and I had to limp it to the dealership. The dealership confirmed that the engine was blown, likely due to a connecting rod bearing failure. Now I am waiting for Honda to make a call on it because it is out of warranty.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F68HB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My incident is related to Keyless system problem, it is drained out the battery and I can't be able start on my pickup. Because it is turn on and off the instrumental panel several times until the battery is drained out of power. This Keyless system, shouldn't affect the battery, because his function is only for turn on the vehicle. I never thought this kind of new turn on system buttons.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-25
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F73HB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2017 Honda Ridgeline began making an odd noise, so I took it to my dealer. They diagnosed failed connecting rod bearings, which have sent metal shavings throughout the engine. The only repair would be an engine swap, which would cost almost the value of the vehicle. I cannot drive the vehicle as is due to the potential of catastrophic engine failure. Certain 2017 and 2019 Ridgelines are under recall for this same issue, but mine was manufactured 5 months later than the select few 2017 Ridgelines they have included. Honda will not cover my engine under recall or goodwill. I am left with a worthless vehicle that would have been very dangerous to continue driving. Please urge Honda to expand the recall. I'm sure I am not the only one in this unfortunate situation.

UPDATED 3/20/17: Hi there! I still really like the vehicle, but there are a few things that have left me a bit disappointed. While acceleration is good when you really step on the pedal, low end responsiveness in day to day driving is a bit weak. I've also found that the transmission never seems to be in the gear I want, which can make precise control of speed difficult. It would be great if there was a manual mode or a performance mode to flip the computer to a more aggressive dynamic, but unfortunately the only option is a lone button to downshift to D4. On the bright side, steering/handling remains a Honda strength and is exceptional, as the vehicle steers like a car. It also rides like a Honda, which is to say a bit on the stiff side, but tuning makes it handle great on uneven terrain and it's definitely a worthwhile tradeoff. Storage is fantastic - you can even fit a golf bag under the rear seat, and the rear trunk and bed are both wide and useful. However, I have to admit that I'm not a fan of the touch screen interface. Even after 6 months, I still get lost at times as it's not very intuitive. The E trim also states that it has a The interior lights could use some improvement as they are weak and narrow, making it difficult to see a large portion of the storage areas at night. However, the power rear sliding window and sunroof work great, and the mirror defroster works efficiently in less than a minute. The front seat headrests are poorly positioned and lean too far forward, but the HVAC is strong and heats and cools quickly, with easy-to-use controls. The front ground clearance is more like a light SUV than a truck, but the front air dam is made of flexible rubber instead of hard plastic, which means it can bend instead of breaking if scraped against the ground. The USB ports only work with the car in ACC or ON, which can be inconvenient. However, the spare tire is located in the trunk and away from the elements, which is a nice design feature from Honda. The rear camera works well and has three top-down viewing angles to choose from, making it easy to hitch up a trailer. The vehicle tows well and can easily pull a 2500 lb boat. The driver assist technology is semi-useful, but the lane keeper feature can drive the car for you on level pavement, even around moderate curves. However, it doesn't work well on sloped pavement as it drifts all the way to the line before correcting. Overall, the car has its pros and cons, but it's a reliable vehicle that can get the job done. The car has some great features that I find useful. The backup warning of side traffic works great and has great range, which helps when backing out of spots where it's hard to see, or if you're not paying attention. It actually helped me avoid a jogger wearing black at dusk when backing out of driveway one night! The adaptive cruise is probably the single most useful feature, which actually works. However, I would like to see more configuration options on distance from preceding vehicle. The blind spot detection works but is not very useful. The road departure feature is not very helpful as it comes on after you're already heading into the ditch (i.e. too late). Overall, after 6 months, I've lowered my opinion of the vehicle slightly due to it being advertised as a

I have experienced issues with the sensors twice, both times due to the sensor compartment getting wet. The first time was during a rainy drive, and the second time was after a car wash. I have been informed that the unit will be replaced with new parts. However, given that other individuals have reported similar issues, it may be necessary for Honda to re-examine this area of the design. Although I paid cash for my vehicle and love the truck, I cannot tolerate this recurring issue.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck from the summer of 2018. Unfortunately, I started having some warning lights come on in the instrument cluster, including red, blue, yellow, and more. I took it to the dealer three times, but Honda didn't seem willing to step up and fix the issue. The dealership didn't seem too concerned either, until I had a bit of a meltdown in the sales room. After that, they were finally willing to look into the problems with my truck. It ended up being there for quite a while, and the wiring problem required removing the bed from the truck and replacing the wiring harness from the cab back. While comfort and ease of getting in and out of the truck are great features, reliability is even more important. Unfortunately, this experience has left me feeling like I won't be purchasing any more Honda's in the future. Instead, we've decided to go back to Toyota. Thank you for listening to my story!

My 2018 RTL Ridgeline has been making loud mechanical popping noises when driving at low speeds in forward and reverse, especially when turning the steering wheel. Despite taking it to Honda multiple times, they have been unable to determine the source of the noise. However, since it is still under warranty for another 3 years, I am confident that any issues that may arise will be covered. While the gas cap design could be improved, I have found that taking extra care during rainy weather prevents any issues. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase and trust in Honda's commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.Honda produces excellent CRV vehicles. However, the Ridgeline pickup truck has some issues that need to be addressed. The mechanics are not experienced with this new model, which makes it difficult for them to diagnose the mechanical popping noises. I have learned my lesson and will stick with manufacturers that have more experience in producing pickup trucks. Additionally, the rear doors do not open fully, making it challenging to load and unload items. The tailgate does not lock, and the Bluetooth connectivity is not reliable, requiring frequent disconnection and reconnection with my iPhone 6s. Despite these issues, I hope this information provides an honest assessment of the Ridgeline's quality.

This truck has great handling and ride. The interior ergonomics are great and the center console is huge. Although the cup holders can be a bit annoying since anything that doesn't fit perfectly rattles, they are still functional. I absolutely love the in bed trunk, it's so convenient! I have been averaging 19mpg with a mix of California highways and city driving, which is pretty impressive. However, I did experience a few issues with my truck. Right from the start, I had two annoying rattles coming from the dash area which originates from inside the dash where I cannot reach. The rattle comes and goes with the fluctuation of temperatures. After 1000 miles, my truck developed two loud pops or bangs from the front when I am in reverse with the wheel turned (parking in reverse). After around 3000 miles, my transmission developed a faint '1-click' under light acceleration in 4th gear. At 5000 miles, that faint click has become noticeably louder and now occurs in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear. Along with the clicking, the truck has developed very aggressive engine braking while low speed coasting or decelerating to a stop. Although these issues have been frustrating, I have done some research and found that Honda is working to address these problems. It's important to be aware of these issues as a future buyer, but overall I still think this is a great truck.

Positive 2017 Honda Ridgeline car reviews

  1. Forrest Becker 2025-08-23

I previously owned the 2007 version of this truck and it was a great experience. I purchased it for 19K in 2012 and sold it for 10K after putting 65K miles on it, which is an amazingly low annual cost. Needless to say, I put a lot of miles on my car and I wanted better gas mileage and something I knew would last me a long time so I looked at the new version. I was impressed with the versatility of the Ridgeline and the very good road manners. The improvements are perfect and I absolutely love the option to turn off a few cylinders and go into I recently purchased a 3500lb popup camper and it tows beautifully. The truck has lots of power and good control, which always made me feel secure. Even when I completely filled the bed and the interior, the suspension felt a little softer, but it was still very secure. The headlights are amazing, and I can see things clearly at night. *(Update: Seriously, these headlights are amazing. I am consistently appreciative of how effective they are, especially on dark, rainy nights.) I was also impressed when the brights turned off automatically when I was driving on a country road at night and there was an oncoming car. Although the controls for the touchscreen take a little while to get used to, I appreciated that some of the features and settings were limited to when I was not driving so as to not distract the driver. Now that I am used to them, I appreciate them, but I do think a physical lever or button for sound would be nice beyond the steering wheel controls. I really like the red accents and lighting, but in all honesty, I was disappointed that in this top-of-the-line black edition, the red lighting was only in the front seat-wells and door handles, and there were none for the back seats. The interior has good quality and soft materials. I did notice that the access to the back seats through the doors is a little less on this new model. Not a big deal, but getting bigger things into the back seat is a little more challenging. (Update: I have not been impeded at all by the access in the rear seats, and no one who has ever been a passenger back there has mentioned it.) I really like the new exterior styling; it's very sleek. While not an overly rugged-looking truck, it appeals to me because it looks sophisticated and at home in the city, which is where I do the majority of my driving. I do not consider myself an off-roader, but I did take this new truck out on the beach and tested out the 'sand mode,' and it performed with flying colors. My previous version was great in the snow, so I expected the same from this generation. I'm happy to report that it performed perfectly even without chains during a few snowstorms, including an ice and 10-inch snow event. Unfortunately, there were no deals to be had at the dealership yet due to high demand and low inventory. Overall, I believe that Honda has taken the best parts of the Ridgeline, such as ride quality, performance, versatility, and features, and significantly improved each one. They have also addressed my biggest complaint with the previous version, which only averaged 16 mpg in mixed driving. As a mostly city driver who rarely tows, hauls, or off-roads, but wants the versatility only a truck can provide while also wanting the comfort of an SUV, I fit the demographic Honda was targeting very well. Bingo! *(Update: After 26500 miles and 19 months, my big takeaway is that this is a solid, comfortable, versatile, and quiet truck that makes me feel secure in all driving situations I have been in so far. It has been a pleasurable 26500 miles, and I expect many more! Kudos, Honda)

Congratulations on your new Ridgeline! It sounds like you made the perfect choice for your needs. The Ridgeline's quiet and SUV-like driving experience is definitely a plus, and it's great to hear that the technology is top-notch with features like Apple Carplay, Bluetooth, Navigation, and cameras. The interior also sounds comfortable and spacious with plenty of storage. It's no wonder people stare at your truck at stop lights! Thank you for sharing your positive experience and recommendation for others in a similar situation.

  3. Olen Kohler 2025-08-01

As a 66-year-old, I was searching for a vehicle that would provide comfort, utility, and driving fun. And I found it with our 'E'! My wife and I live in Minnesota and took delivery in February after about 6 weeks of waiting. The heated seats and steering wheel are wonderful, and the vehicle has very good control and feel in snow and ice. I have been pleasantly surprised by the nice ventilation and fresh air flow through the cabin during the summer months when opening the sunroof and rear window. Recently, we did a 700-mile road trip, much of which used the Ecco mode, and we averaged 28.5 MPG. Hauling lumber and bags of mulch from home and garden stores is now much more pleasant, and hauling grandkids in the back is much easier. Although there have been some grumbles about the information system, I'm enjoying getting out the manual, going online, and educating myself on the system. I do enjoy the large screen, and the in-bed speakers are fun for an old 60s rocker like me. While it's true that the rear doors could open wider and some knobs on the radio would be nice, my bride of 37 years and I are very pleased with our 'E'. Update: August 2020 - we are still in love with the Ridgeline. It is everything we need in a truck, and we would definitely look at the 3rd generation when it comes out. We are 100% satisfied.

  4. Alvah Cole 2025-07-21

The truck has excellent visibility, features, handling, and comfort. It combines the feel of driving an SUV or crossover with the practicality of a bed. To those who argue that it's 'not a real truck', I say, enjoy your 3 mpg and stepladder mounted to the side. We likely haul the same amount, but I prefer the versatility of this truck. Of course, if I were towing a yacht, megacamper, or concrete, I might consider a larger vehicle like a megatruck. But for everyday use, this truck is perfect.

If you're in the market for a midsize pick-up truck, I highly recommend taking 20 minutes of your time to visit the nearest Honda dealer and test drive the new 2017 Ridgeline. It's a step ahead of the competition, including Tacoma, Frontier, Colorado, and more. You won't be disappointed! Good luck!
