2006 Honda Ridgeline problems
The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.
First generation (YK1; 2006)
The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).
The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.
Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.
Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

Common 2006 Honda Ridgeline problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2006 Honda Ridgeline, several common problems have been reported:
- Front Struts Replacement: At higher mileage, front struts may require replacement, which can cost between $600 and $900 for two struts.
- Rusted U-Joint Bearing: A rusted U-joint bearing in the propeller shaft can cause vibrations, especially during acceleration or deceleration. While replacing the propeller shaft is relatively straightforward, it can be costly. Exploring options to rebuild it and replace the U-joint separately is advised for cost savings.
- Transmission Cooler Lines and Power Steering Lines Leaks: Rust and leaks in the transmission cooler lines near the radiator and power steering lines on the front subframe are common issues, especially in regions with winter salt use. Timely repair of leaks is crucial to prevent further damage.
- Faulty O-Ring in Power Steering Pump: A faulty O-ring can cause a whining noise from the power steering pump. This inexpensive repair can be done with the help of online videos. It is essential to check the power steering fluid level and replace the power steering pump if the noise persists after changing the O-ring.
- Plastic Pulleys Breakage: Plastic pulleys (cable guides) allowing rear seats to fold up are prone to breaking in the 2006-2011 Ridgeline. Following Honda TSB 10-068 for an easy and inexpensive fix using replacement metal pulleys is recommended.
- Brake Calipers Seizure: Brake calipers may become seized, requiring replacement, which can cost between $220 and $350. Malfunctioning calipers can cause "brake drag," giving the sensation that the car is not rolling freely.
- Loose Intermediate Shaft Heat Shield: According to Honda service bulletin TSB 07-028, a loose intermediate shaft heat shield may lead to a rattle under the truck during acceleration. Replacing the heat shield and damaged nuts or gaskets should resolve the issue.
- CV Boots Leaking: Grease spatters in wheel wells or inside wheels indicate leaking CV boots. While a boot replacement is affordable, consider replacing the entire CV axle for one front CV axle costing between $250 and $400.
These issues highlight common problems reported by owners of the 2006 Honda Ridgeline, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and timely repairs to ensure the vehicle's longevity and performance.

Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 1, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. We took my son's vehicle to our local Honda dealership for the recall repair. They replaced 2 bolts that secure the fuel tank straps to the frame. Then sent us away with an invoice saying the vehicle is not safe to drive due to severely rusted fuel tank straps. I have emailed and called American Honda many times to ask why this is not covered by the recall and requesting a buy back. They have only responded by saying the recall repairs were made. They won't put anything in writing explaining why the severely corroded fuel tank straps that are a safety issue per their dealership are not related to the recall.

- Summary: My vehicle was recalled for the rusting rear frame (Honda Case # [XXX]) which I took into the local Honda dealer (Stafford Brown in Arlington VA). The service manager at the dealer explained the subframe is rusted extensively to the extent that it is a safety issue. The service manager noted, while the vehicle passed the required Honda test specified in the Honda recall, it is a hazard, and the vehicle would likely fail the same test in 6 to 12 months. The service manager noted they can only address what is specified in the recall. The manager submitted the concern and pictures to the Honda DPSM. The manager also provided me with a copy of the pictures. I also submitted the pictures, to include the email from the service manager to Honda USA. Honda USA rep, Ms [XXX] , (case # [XXX]) contacted me and apologized for the situation I am in but offered no means to address the safety concerns. Honda could not explain why they have no remediation for the rust issue that is still a safety hazard when the recall was for rust. Honda is not addressing the issue that they responsible for and was required to remedy by NHTSA, which is rust. I am attaching the pictures and emails sent to me by the Honda Service Manager. - Summary: My vehicle was recalled because corrosion can form on the rear frame due to accumulation of road de-icing agents mixed with mud and dirt. The fuel tank, which is mounted to the rear frame, can become unsecured as the rear frame deteriorates from corrosion. An unsecured fuel tank may result in a fuel leak and an increased risk of fire in the presence of an ignition source. Loud noises from the rear of the vehicle can alert you in the event the fuel tank becomes unsecured. I called to make an appointment for the recall on [XXX] and it was dropped of at Williams Honda in Traverse City MI the next day for nearest appointment which was [XXX}. I was notified by Williams Honda on [XXX] that my vehicle failed the inspection and could not be fixed. Williams Honda told me to expect a call from Honda. I never did until I called a week later. I tried to get a loaner vehicle or rental since mine could not be repaired. Honda advised that Williams needed to arrange it and Williams advised that it needed to be approved by Honda. This went back an forth for weeks until Honda advised that I could have a rental if I drove to Williams 2 hours from my house. Honda suggested that I purchase a rental vehicle with my own money and submit for reimbursement with the hopes that I would be made whole. It is now [XXX] and they still have refused to make reasonable accommodations for a rental vehicle and they have not fixed my vehicle. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I would be willing to discuss this matter in greater detail over the phone [XXX] ). - Summary: There is currently a rust recall for vehicles registered in states surrounding me, but North Carolina, Tennessee is not included. The recall is from damage by salt to rusting frame and rocker panels. Mine was originally registered in Western NC and currently registered in north east TN. Both of these areas use salt on the roads and my Ridgeline is rusting in the rocker panels and underneath. This is a known issue but why would you allow Honda to not cover vehicles in neighboring states to those covered, i.e. Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia. Hoping you will act on this since you know it's a problem with states using salt and this Honda is starting to rust rapidly with no warning.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-04
- VIN: 2HJYK16586H
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,WHEELS
- Summary: When my dealership inspected my rear frame for corrosion related to warranty 22V-430, they noted that the rear frame corrosion was so severe that the rear passenger wheel was no longer secured to the rear frame, resulting in a severe safety risk. However, warranty 22V-430 relates to corrosion of the rear frame resulting in an unsecured fuel tank which may result in a fuel leak and an increased risk of fire. The dealership and the district Honda representative agreed that the frame was severely corroded and presented a severe safety risk, but the district Honda representative said Honda will not warranty the defective frame nor offer any remedy for the related rear frame corrosion problem. The corrosion problem acknowledged in warranty 22V-430 could impair the safety and stability of the vehicle and put the driver and all passenger as well as other vehicles and pedestrians at risk if the wheel becomes unsecured. Until warranty 22V-430 was performed, there was no warning system alerting me to the safety issue and thus could have easily gone undetected. Since Honda is not taking responsibility for defect in the rear frame, I am seeking your help for this related rear frame corrosion problem. Note: The attached 4 pictures show the rear drivers side frame with secured wheel compared with the rear passenger side frame with unsecured wheel.

2006 Honda Ridgeline recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 14 recalls for different components of the 2006 Honda Ridgeline.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame mounting surface, where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached, to corrode and possibly detach the fuel tank, which can result in a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is LCD.

I purchased my 06 in the fall of 2005 and I can confidently say that it is a reliable and durable vehicle. However, due to the harsh effects of Michigan road salt over the past 15 years, rust has become an issue that needs to be addressed.

This is a fantastic vehicle! I absolutely love it. The bed is perfect for my occasional needs and the ability to lay a sheet of plywood down in the bed was a huge factor in my decision to purchase it. As an avid golfer, I find the in-bed truck works perfectly for my clubs and pull cart. The cab is spacious and comfortable, easily accommodating four of us on our way to the golf course. Plus, you can have a normal conversation with people in the front or back seats. All of my friends who have driven it rave about the handling qualities and are satisfied with the power, although I personally think it could use a little more. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone in need of a light to moderate duty pickup. Just keep in mind that it's not designed for off-road use.

Your Honda Ridgeline sounds amazing! It's great to hear that you love the unique design, sun roof, leather, heated seats, 4-wheel drive, running boards, cargo area, two way tailgate and comfort. It's clear that you take great care of your vehicle, having driven it from 114000 miles to 160000 miles. It's wonderful that you plan to keep driving it until the wheels fall off. You truly have a great vehicle!

This is my first truck and I absolutely love it! Everyone who rides in it comments on how spacious it is on the inside. I have had zero problems with it so far. When I drove it halfway across the country from California to Texas, I was pleasantly surprised by the good gas mileage it got (for a truck). The average was close to 26 MPG. It has plenty of passing power and I experienced no problems passing on steep inclines (plenty of torque). I highly recommend the factory tonneau cover, which I use to spend time sitting atop with my girlfriend watching fireworks, sunsets, and picnics in the country. Additionally, the cover helps to hide contents in the bed of the truck. Honda really hit a homerun with this thing!

This truck has been a great fit for my needs, combining the best of both an SUV and a truck. It's nicely appointed and incredibly comfortable. I've been driving it for 5 years now and I still absolutely love it!

My experience has been two-sided actually. From a family hauler perspective, it's great for taking the kids to after-school functions and throwing some groceries in the back on the way home. I'm glad to have the cover. However, as for a truck, I really wish I had my Silverado back, having traded it in on this. We camp in the summer and also tow the boat over to Dale Hollow on the weekends. The salesman assured me a 3500# boat would not be a problem, but unfortunately, this is not the case. The V-6 struggles to get the boat off of our street, let alone the heart attack I almost had trying to get it up a ramp. The brakes offer no confidence either when trying to bring the trailer to a halt (w/ trailer brakes!).

It seems that the V8s available in other manufacturers may have more power than this one. Additionally, the fuel economy could be improved, especially when accelerating at highway speeds or pulling over hills. As for the ride, it may be a bit bumpy and there could be some rattling in the doors. It's possible that the door sills are not aligned properly and there may be some squeaking as well.

The Ridgeline had several issues, including a locked-up front rotor at 18,000 miles, a faulty tire pressure monitoring sensor at 30,000 miles, a blown engine at 80,000 miles (reportedly due to a loose spark plug), and a leaking air conditioning compressor that requires replacement at 90,000 miles.

It is unfortunate that the timing belt was installed instead of a chain in an interference engine, as it can cause significant damage if it breaks. In this case, the belt broke and caused damage to the engine, which can be quite costly to repair. It is understandable to feel frustrated in this situation, especially after having recently replaced the belt and related components. We are sorry to hear about your negative experience with Honda and hope that you are able to find a solution that works for you.

After 11 months of ownership, I have decided to sell my truck. Despite multiple trips to the dealership for repairs, the issues with the rear window, front strut coils, back side panel, rattles in the dash area, and loud buzzing noise at freeway speeds persisted. Additionally, the gas mileage was well below sticker estimates and the limited leg room made it uncomfortable for me at 6'5
