The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.

First generation (YK1; 2006)

The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).

The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.

Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.

Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

2013 Honda Ridgeline recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2013 Honda Ridgeline.

2022-06-16
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame mounting surface, where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached, to corrode and possibly detach the fuel tank, which can result in a fuel leak.
  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is LCD.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
  • Consequence: If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag air bag inflators assembled as part of the frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment (such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bags), may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to higher absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began November 6, 2018. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are H2H and S2I.

Negative 2013 Honda Ridgeline car reviews

  1. Dallin Russel 2024-08-12

This truck has had several issues that have been disappointing. The third brake light assembly broke off the truck on the highway after 2 years, which was out of warranty. Despite being a well-documented problem on forums, Honda USA was not helpful. The radio also had issues due to the antenna being located in the third brake light assembly. The brakes have needed to be replaced three times in three years, which is unusual for highway driving. The left front axle also blew out after three years. Additionally, the timing belt, spark plugs, and valve adjustment needed to be replaced for a total cost of $1500. The truck also requires frequent fluid changes, which is inconvenient. The seats are uncomfortable for moderate to long rides, and the interior design is confusing. Despite these issues, the truck may still hold some value until the new model is introduced.

It seems like there are quite a lot of features in it that can be frustrating and overwhelming. I understand that it may not be your first choice in a replacement vehicle, and that you prefer something less costly to fix.

Positive 2013 Honda Ridgeline car reviews

  1. Felton Towne 2025-01-09

My Ridgeline was unfortunately destroyed in an accident caused by another driver who ran a stop sign. However, I am grateful to report that the truck performed flawlessly in protecting me. The airbags deployed as intended without any issues and the crumple zones absorbed the impact shock as designed. This vehicle was an absolute pleasure to drive on long trips, providing both comfort and security for myself and my passengers. In fact, everyone who rode along always expressed delight and admiration for the quality of the vehicle. While I did have one complaint about living in a rural area where barnyard rodents chewed on the control cable wiring, I hope that Honda will consider protecting this with an armored sheathing in the future. I will certainly miss the electric heated leather driver's seat and side mirrors, XM radio, and traction control on slippery winter roads. The rough track to my farmstead was never a problem to negotiate with AWD and cruising the Interstate was like a soft run across silk. Overall, I can confidently say that this was the best ride I have ever owned.

Your ‘12 RTL sounds amazing! It gets 17.5 mpg in town, has a roomy interior, sun roof, leather heated seats, electric rear window, 8 tie-offs in the bed, and a cool trunk. I love that you had a newer stereo installed with Apple car play. It's understandable that you had to replace your big pickup with a Ridgeline since it didn't fit in your garage.

I couldn't resist writing my first ever product review for the Ridgeline, as it's such an excellent vehicle. I purchased a used Ridgeline with only 13K miles on it about a year ago and have driven it for 15K miles. As my first pick-up, I absolutely love it. Before purchasing, I did plenty of research and test drove both the old and new 2017 models. In my opinion, the new 2017 model is just okay. I personally prefer the old design. I love the car-like ride, comfort, tons of interior storage capacity and compartments, in-bed trunk (which holds two sets of golf clubs), and the mid-size that makes it easy to maneuver (my wife has no problem driving it). It also has great traction in the snow and easy-to-use controls (knobs and buttons vs the new touch screen). The gate swings to the side, which is very convenient. There are a few areas where improvement could be made, such as the lack of memory seat, poor radio reception, small and difficult-to-read

  4. Judge Hegmann 2024-11-18

Just like a trusty knife, it may not be the most specialized tool out there, but you can't help but love it for its versatility. This car is a reliable daily driver that can also handle weekend adventures with ease.

  5. Beau Durgan 2024-10-22

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new vehicle, even if you've only had it for a short time. It's great to hear that you've chosen Honda for your first car!
