2014 Honda Ridgeline problems
The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.
First generation (YK1; 2006)
The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).
The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.
Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.
Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

Common 2014 Honda Ridgeline problems
The Honda Ridgeline, produced from 2006 to 2014, is known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the issues that Honda Ridgeline owners have reported:
- Front struts replacement: At higher mileage, front struts may require replacement, costing between $600 and $900 for two struts.
- Rusted U-joint bearing: A rusted U-joint bearing in the propeller shaft can cause vibrations, especially during acceleration or deceleration. While the propeller shaft replacement is relatively straightforward, the part is expensive. Explore options to rebuild it and replace the U-joint separately for cost savings.
- Rust and leaks in the transmission cooler lines: Rust and leaks in the transmission cooler lines near the radiator and power steering lines on the front subframe are common, especially in regions with winter salt use. Timely repair of leaks is crucial to prevent further damage.
- Faulty O-ring: A faulty O-ring can cause a whining noise from the power steering pump. This inexpensive and easy repair can be done with the help of videos online.
- Broken plastic pulleys: Plastic pulleys (cable guides) allowing rear seats to fold up are prone to breaking in the 2006-2011 Ridgeline. Follow Honda TSB 10-068 for an easy and inexpensive fix using replacement metal pulleys.
- Broken sway bar link: A broken sway bar link may cause rattling or clunking noises from the front end. Prompt replacement is essential, and a thorough inspection is recommended to identify any additional damaged components.
- Seized brake calipers: Brake calipers may become seized, requiring replacement. A malfunctioning caliper can cause "brake drag," giving the sensation that the car is not rolling freely.
- Loose intermediate shaft heat shield: A loose intermediate shaft heat shield may lead to a rattle under the truck during acceleration. Replacing the heat shield and damaged nuts or gaskets should resolve the issue.
- Grease spatters in wheel wells or inside wheels: Grease spatters in wheel wells or inside wheels indicate leaking CV boots. While a boot replacement is affordable, consider your mechanic's suggestion to replace the entire CV axle ($250 to $400 for one front CV axle).
- Failing air-fuel ratio sensor: A failing air-fuel ratio sensor (Front O2 sensor) can trigger code P0134, costing around $90-$130 in labor plus the part cost.
- Malfunctioning TPMS sensor: A malfunctioning TPMS sensor may keep the TPMS light on, requiring replacement ($80 to $170 for one sensor).
- Defective A/C compressor relay: A defective A/C compressor relay could cause A/C issues. The relay is inexpensive and easily replaceable; consult YouTube videos for guidance. Address any refrigerant leaks promptly.
- Failed catalytic converter: The catalytic converter might fail at higher mileage, triggering codes P0420 or P0430. Opting for an aftermarket catalytic converter could be a cost-effective solution.
- Misfiring codes for the rear cylinder bank: Misfiring codes for the rear cylinder bank are often caused by fouled spark plugs.
These common problems with the Honda Ridgeline 2014 are based on complaints from owners of this car. It is essential to address these issues promptly to maintain the vehicle's reliability and longevity.

How many miles will a 2014 Honda Ridgeline last?
According to pattersontruckstop.com, a typical Honda Ridgeline will last around 200,000-250,000 miles. This number, of course, will require some effort on your behalf and careful upkeep if you want to make the most of your experience behind the wheel.
What are the best years to buy used Honda Ridgeline?
If you're looking for a used Honda Ridgeline, you have several model years to choose from. First-generation models ranging from 2009 to 2012 are known for their reliability, but second-generation models ranging from 2018 to the present are also good choices.
Does the 2014 Honda Ridgeline have a timing belt or chain?
Newer models use timing belts made of polyurethane and Kevlar for long life and durability. They can go as long as 100,000 miles although it's always a good idea to change it before then. Belt failure can cause extensive damage to the valves, pistons and other internal parts of the engine.

- Summary: I responded to a recall for my 2014 Honda Ridgeline on October 19, 2023. I have gone through recalls before and did not think much of it until the dealership informed me that my vehicle was "CONDEMNED". I have been calling Honda America ever since and they are not responsive. I was given a case manager as of October 23rd but this case manager cannot get me a loaner vehicle or any other information on how Honda America will make me whole. I have one car in my family and we live in a rural area with no public transportation. If Honda is going to issue a recall and find no remedy they MUST be held accountable and must be responsive to people like me who needs a car to get to work. The Honda dealership made me sign a waiver saying I assume all responsibility if anything happens which is outrageous. I requested a loaner vehicle and they denied the request. I asked that my case be expedited and it's been 3 weeks with no word.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM

- Summary: My local dealership, Wesley Chaple Honda, in Wesley Chaple Florida, cannot get the tool required to perform the recall /repair of the rusted gas tank belt support that the recall no. 22V430 refers to. I purchased the 2014 Honda Ridgeline in Butler, PA in 2014 and is considered the rust belt region which is causing the corrosion of the support. Honda claims there are not enough Ridgelines in Florida to supply the local dealership with the necessary repair parts and the special tool required to make the correction. The Honda Corp. customer support just says to take the vehicle back to the dealership for the recall, but the dealership here cannot perform the recall without the proper tool.
STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
- VIN: 5FPYK1F57EB
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Paint defect for 2014 Honda Ridgeline How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? NA Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Dealership auto body shop said that the car's paint seems to have a defect such as clear coat is gone on car that is why it is peeling badly which is resulting to rust. I do not know if the paint had been improperly applied or issues with chemical composition of the paint that lead to premature chipping and wear that is occurring with the car. I had a 2007 honda pilot older than the 2014 Honda Ridgeline and it is not even peeling and rusty like the ridgeline. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? By Martin--email [email protected] who is the body shop manager at Russ Darrow Honda. I brought it to Honda Corporation's attention at [email protected] Case #: 12815491 and they refuse to assist claiming that there is no recall and it is considered "normal wear and tear" which I do not believe that in my case is the truth. There have been several complaints about Honda ridgeline's customers who are unhappy about the peeling paint. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Started toward at the end of 2021 and then had it estimated in Mar 2022, cost over $10,519 for the paint alone. For a paint job that cost over $10519 that means that there must be something wrong with the car to being with during manufacturing. It should NOT be blame on normal wear and tear. Solution: I would appreciate for Honda to do a courtesy repair on the car such as a new paint job at their own expense. Perhaps NHTSA should contact and research about folks who are in the same position as I am with the peeling paint.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-03
- VIN: 5FPYK1F51EB
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: There was significant water infiltration on left side front at location around and below fuse block and parking brake. Soaked insulation up to driver side seat and back to the windshield on the same side were noted. Water infiltration after heavy rain was severe enough to cause audible parking brake alarm that wouldn't clear completely until the area had partially dried. This alarm is loud enough and persistent enough to cause driver distraction and would become intermittent as carpet dried. insulation had to be removed after it was noted still wet after three days of no rain and with what appeared visibly as black mold near steering column at floor board. This appears similar to water infiltration addressed in the Honda service bulletin 07-082 for the 2007 and 2008 year models of the Ridgeline truck.

- Summary: Safety Recall for rear subframe rust was "performed" at local dealer. Quality of work was questioned in that safety recall indicated dealer would removed corrosion on said subframe and apply anti-corrosive wax. Dealer notes they applied some anti-corrosive wax and some undercoating to a small section but did not coat ALL corrosion areas they cleaned. I had area reviewed by independent repair shop who noted the area was a concern and should be coated in the near future to prevent further corrosion and damage to frame. After discussing this with the dealer service department they informed me that was my job and my expense and told me to "have a nice day" and hung up. Is this appropriate behavior for a safety related item that could result in a fuel tank detachment or fuel leak?

THE CAR ONLY HAS 90K MILES WHICH ALSO IS AN ISSUE AS THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL FAILURE. I WAS ABLE TO AVOID A COLLISION BUT IM WONDERING IF THIS SHOULD BE LOOKED INTO CLOSER AND IF THERE ARE OTHERS THAT HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM BUT DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE FAILURE POINT SINCE THE PART IS NOT SUPPOSE TO FAIL IN THIS MANNER .

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-12-15
- VIN: 5FPYK1F73EB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: IN DECEMBER 2016 I BEGAN TO NOTICE BILLOWING CLOUDS OF BLUE SMOKE FROM MY EXHAUST PIPE ON STARTUP. ON WATCHING THE PROBLEM FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS I NOTICED THAT IT HAPPENED INTERMITTENTLY, USUALLY (BUT NOT ALWAYS) WHEN THE ENGINE WAS COLD. FOLLOWING THE INITIAL BLUE CLOUD (DEFINITELY NOT BLACK OR WHITE SMOKE), ANY EXHAUST GASES BECAME INVISIBLE (BUT I AM UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHETHER MY TRUCK WAS SMOKING FROM THE EXHAUST WHEN I WAS DRIVING). I ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN I STARTED IT UP WHILE IN THE DRIVEWAY (WITH THE INTENTION OF PULLING THE TRUCK INTO MY GARAGE), EVEN IF THERE WAS NO SMOKE VISIBLE THE GARAGE WOULD FILL WITH FUMES ? IT WAS SO BAD THAT I WOULD HAVE TO HOLD MY BREATH, EXIT THE TRUCK, AND SPRINT INTO MY HOUSE TO AVOID INHALING THOSE FUMES. IT QUICKLY BECAME APPARENT TO ME (AS AN AMATEUR MECHANIC) THAT SOMEHOW OIL WAS FINDING ITS WAY INTO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND WAS BEING BURNED, RESULTING IN THE SMOKE & FUMES. I THEREFORE TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE HONDA DEALER IN ORDER TO HAVE THEM ISOLATE AND REPAIR THE PROBLEM. LATER IN THE DAY [XXX] PHONED TO SAY THAT THEIR SERVICE TECHNICIANS HAD NOT BEEN ABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM, THEREFORE HAD DONE NO SERVICE TO THE TRUCK, AND THAT I SHOULD COME PICK IT UP. WHEN I ASKED WHAT DIAGNOSTIC SERVICE HAD BEEN PERFORMED, [XXX] TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD STARTED THE TRUCK SEVERAL TIMES AND LET IT RUN FOR SEVERAL MINUTES, ALL THE WHILE VISUALIZING THE EXHAUST PIPE TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY SMOKE: THERE WAS NONE. THEREFORE THEY SEEMINGLY DECIDED THAT THERE MUST NOT BE ANY PROBLEM AND THAT MY COMPLAINT WAS NOT VALID. TO SUMMARIZE: MY RIDGELINE IS BURNING OIL, WHICH PRESENTS A HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE FOR ME; CLOUDS OF BLUE SMOKE AND FUMES ARE BEING DISCHARGED INTO THE ENVIRONMENT; AND I HAVE BEEN INSULTED BY THE SERVICE MANAGER AT VACAVILLE HONDA WHEN I TRIED TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED. 2014 Honda Ridgeline recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2014 Honda Ridgeline.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame mounting surface, where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached, to corrode and possibly detach the fuel tank, which can result in a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is LCD.
- Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
- Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
- Consequence: If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

These vehicles are equipped with driver frontal air bag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are S5B and W59.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling specific 2003 Acura 3.2CL, 2013-2016 ILX, 2013-2014 ILX Hybrid, 2003-2006 MDX, 2007-2016 RDX, 2002-2003 3.2TL, 2004-2006, and 2009-2014 TL, 2010-2013 ZDX and 2001-2007 and 2009 Honda Accord, 2001-2005 Civic, 2003-2005 Civic Hybrid, 2001-2005 Civic GX NGV, 2002-2007 and 2010-2011 CR-V, 2003-2011 Element, 2007 Fit, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2003-2008 Pilot, and 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles. The affected vehicles received a replacement driver air bag inflator as part of a previous Takata inflator recall remedy or a replacement driver air bag module containing the same inflator type as a service part. Due to a manufacturing error, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver frontal air bag, these inflators may explode.

This vehicle has 100 thousands miles on and is immaculate. It has been serviced every five thousand miles and garage kept, making it very dependable. If the price was right, I would not hesitate to purchase another one. 👍

Hi there! I noticed that you've owned both a 2007 Ridgeline RTS and a 2014 SE, and have put quite a few miles on both! It's great to hear that you love the comfortable ride and the 5-star crash safety rating. Safety is definitely a top priority when it comes to traveling, and it's wonderful that you feel secure both locally and on long trips. I also appreciate that you mentioned the low cost of maintenance from year to year. That's always a plus! And let's not forget about the 8.5 cubic feet trunk - that's definitely a unique feature that sets it apart from other vehicles. While it could use a bit more torque and horsepower, it's great to hear that it still gets you where you need to go. With 17 MPG in town and 21.5 MPG on the highway, it sounds like it's pretty efficient too! Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

The Ridgeline is a truck with a waterproof trunk in the bed of the truck. It's overall fuel efficient, has AWD, leather heated seats, and more for comfort and safety. It's a great vehicle!

About 5 years ago, I was in a grocery store's parking lot when I saw a couple loading the rear compartment of their Honda Ridgeline. I had never seen a Honda Ridgeline before, but it caught my attention. I started researching and decided that I wanted a Honda Ridgeline made from 2006 to 2014. I was looking for a Sport model with low mileage, cloth seats, white with tan interior, and no sensors. I was patient and looked for it, but unfortunately, I couldn't find my Ridgeline. However, nine months ago, I found my love. It was not what I had been looking for, but instead, a gorgeous 2014 Honda Ridgeline SE with 33,000 miles, a beautiful silver exterior, and black leather interior. My wife and I drove 18 hours to where the truck was located, and then we brought our baby home. It has the best ride of any pickup I had ever experienced. The interior is roomy and comfortable, and the design is simple and easy to use, except for the GPS system. The stereo sound system is awesome! Once home, I took my baby to a Honda dealership and had everything serviced, then replaced the tires with some Michelin Defenders. The ride is quiet, smooth, and handles like a sports car. I'm 70 years young, and my Honda Ridgeline is the best transportation I've ever owned. It is as comfortable as riding in a car, and I can haul my toys. I hope it lasts forever!

I'm so glad I chose this vehicle for its large amount of storage and cubbies, as well as its smooth test drive. However, I must admit that it falls short in nearly every other area.

My dealer has been reminding me about getting the transmission fluid changed for $167. I was surprised because I've never had a dealer suggest this before. According to the owner's manual, there are indicator lights to show what is needed, but I've never seen any indicator to suggest changing any fluid other than engine oil. I'm not sure if my dealer is trying to scam me or if this is really necessary.

It seems like there are quite a lot of features in it that can be frustrating and overwhelming. I understand that it may not be your first choice in a replacement vehicle, and that you prefer something less costly to fix.
