The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.
First generation (YK1; 2006)
The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).
The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.
Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.

- Summary: On Approximately February 10, 2022 I hit a deer and sent my truck out for repair, I encountered a serious issue with my vehicle's engine, which was later diagnosed by Honda as a rod bearing failure which was not related to the accident which meant insurance wouldnt cover. This failure caused the rod bearing to wear and seize, resulting in significant damage to the engine and the presence of metal shavings in the oil pan. As a result, my vehicle's engine has been rendered inoperable and requires extensive repairs. To my dismay, I recently discovered that Honda has issued a recall for nearly 250,000 vehicles due to the same rod bearing issue. The recall states that the rod bearing in the engine may wear and seize, leading to engine damage and potential issues such as improper running or stalling while driving. However, to my surprise, my 2018 Honda Ridgeline is not included in this recall. Considering the identical nature of the problem I encountered and the fact that Honda has acknowledged the issue by issuing a recall, it is evident that my vehicle should have been included in this recall. This exclusion not only undermines my trust in Honda as a manufacturer but also raises concerns about the company's commitment to customer satisfaction and safety. I firmly believe that my 2018 Honda Ridgeline is a lemon, and the engine failure I experienced is a direct result of Honda's negligence in ensuring the quality and reliability of their vehicles. I have always been a loyal Honda customer, and this unfortunate incident has left me feeling betrayed and let down by a brand I once held in high regard.

- Summary: Our 2018 Honda Ridgeline broke a connecting rod, that quickly punched through the engine block. My entire family was left stranded on the side of I-79, at night, in the mountains of West Virginia, in subfreezing temperatures, with no power or heat. It took an hour for a tow truck to reach us (we were in the middle of nowhere) and another hour to get it towed to the nearest Honda dealership. The only warning we had was a slight rattle for about 10 minutes, followed by a POW, immediate and complete loss of engine power, and all the dashboard lights came on simultaneously. The dealership (Urse Honda in Bridgeport WV) confirmed the hole in the side of the engine block, and let me take pictures of the broken rod cap. Ironically, the month before the catastrophic failure, on 11/9/2023 Honda internally released Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) [XXX] that speaks to "internal damage at the connecting rod bearings, possibly leading to engine failure." However I only found out about this TSB AFTER my engine blew up. Furthermore even though this TSB describes exactly the failure I experienced, it ONLY covers 2017 and 2019 Ridgelines, mysteriously skipping over my 2018 Ridgeline. Because of this (for now) Honda is refusing to cover damages to my engine, and also to repair other customers' 2018 Ridgelines before they too catastrophically fail. Even more curious the front 2/3rds of the Ridgelines and Pilots are the same, replacing only the third row Pilot seat with a truck bed in the Ridgelines. Yet the 2018 Pilots ARE covered by this TSB. - Summary: The hood flops in the wind, like a 2 foot long piece of aluminum foil. It's because the glue holding the composite skin to the metal frame has come loose. I'm sure over time, the stress from the wind will cause the composite material to break completely from the hood. Honda dealer wanted Honda to repair it, but Honda will only pay 60%, leaving me with a 1100.00 bill. Not acceptable, since it's a manufacturing defect. I now have a brick and a tie down holding it in place, and you know that's really safe. Since we only drove it in town for the first 2 1/2 years (bought it new off the showroom floor) we didn't know it had a problem. Wasn't until we drove it on I-90 at 80mph, that it had a floppy in the wind problem, it just got worse from then on. Honda dealer in Scottsbluff NE was the place that told us it wasn't normal. That's when we tried to get HONDA to fix it.

If the tonneau cover is not properly secured in the open or closed position, wind resistance may cause the cover to flip and buckle. If this occurs, the hinges between the center and rear panel may deform, possibly allowing the rear panel to separate from the vehicle.

- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018 Honda Pilot and Ridgeline vehicles and 2018 Acura MDX vehicles. The front driver and passenger powered seats in the Honda vehicles and the driver powered seats in the Acura vehicles may have been assembled with improperly manufactured rivets. In the event of a crash, the rivets can break causing the seats not to be secured to the floor. As such, these vehicles may fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 207, "Seating Systems," and 210, "Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages."
- Consequence: In the event of a crash, if the seat does not remain secured to the floor, the seat occupant has an increased risk of injury.

After two years of use, I have not encountered any new problems. However, I do find some of the technology difficult to use, particularly adjusting the fade and balance on the stereo, which negatively impacts my music listening experience. Although, since I mostly listen to talk radio, I haven't spent much time trying to figure it out. It should be more intuitive. When I installed a tailgate lock (which should be standard), I noticed a small gap around the back-up camera on the original handle and the one that comes with the tailgate lock, which may allow water to enter the inside of the tailgate. It seems like there should be a better gasket there. I'm not sure if the water will cause any problems. Overall, the Ridgeline is a flexible, safe, comfortable, and economical truck. It is the best truck for how many people want to use it. The cab has lots of room around occupants and overhead. It rides as smooth and quiet as a nice sedan, and the best versions are loaded with safety features. However, Honda should not make you buy a moon roof and an in-bed speaker system to get all the good safety features. The ten-way power adjustable driver's seat has a lousy lumbar support, about like the old Ridgeline. The controls have been a bit hard to figure out. I'm still not sure why sometimes it unlocks or locks, or worse yet beeps even though I thought I had it set not to do that. It's a quiet beep, but I still want to make sure I can avoid even the softer beeps so I have to read the directions again. The Ridgeline has a nice easy step-in height, and it's fairly low to get in and out of the bed. The rear bumper is a better surface to step on than the old Ridgeline.UPDATE: I had the excessive hood flutter fixed per the Technical Service Bulletin and it seems to be working fine now. I've driven it in some moderately high cross-winds, but not as high as when I noticed the original problem, and it's been great. There have been no other repairs or defects, and no squeaks or rattles, which is a huge improvement from my 2007 Ridgeline when it was new. Although, I have noticed that some of the controls are quite hard to use. I had to read the manual to figure out what should be simple functions. For example, it was hard to figure out how to control the fade, so I couldn't listen to music because it was so annoyingly loud in front. I only listened to talk radio until I figured out how to adjust the fade and balance. However, the truck won't let me do that while driving, although my wife could. I guess it detects somehow who's reaching over to adjust the control, and Honda decided it's too dangerous to let the driver do it while driving (which includes while stopped at a light). That should have told Honda that it's too hard to make that adjustment. Other things don't work the way I want them to, but I need to remember to look it up and figure it out when I'm not driving. Once I'm home, I tend to be busy, so I forget. It does annoying things like resetting my mirrors after I've got them where I want, and it's not obvious how to save my settings. So, I can't do that until I look it up. Overall, it's a good truck in many ways, but it's annoyingly difficult to use. Also, the mpg calculation seems to be lying to me and trying to make me think my gas mileage is about 1.5 mpg better than it really is. I think other owners have indicated the same thing. Update 8-20-19: There have been no additional problems with the truck, and it's still very nice to drive.

Hi there! If you're looking for a reliable vehicle, I highly recommend a Honda. I was in a similar situation where I needed a pickup for unexpected jobs, but didn't want anything too heavy duty. This vehicle ended up being the perfect fit for my needs! It handles really well, almost like a nice SUV. Unfortunately, I had to sell my truck when I moved to a smaller home.

I was a bit surprised to find out that the Honda engineers did not include a lock for the 2-way tailgate. I need to carry some small cargo that won't fit in the trunk, so it would be great if Honda could consider providing a work-around for owners. I learned that it's important to pay attention to even the smallest details and not rely solely on the sales staff to inform you about potential drawbacks of the vehicle.

I purchased a brand new truck in March 2018 and drove it for 51000 miles before experiencing transmission issues. Despite being a pleasure to drive and use on a daily basis, and having a convenient in-bed trunk, the truck's transmission began to slip and surge between 3rd and 5th gear after towing a small camper weighing 3400 pounds on two separate trips. I took the truck to a Honda dealership in Mobile, where the technician could not find any issues but recommended a transmission flush and other unnecessary services. Despite being covered by the 5/60000 mile warranty, I decided to purchase a new Silverado from a nearby Chevrolet dealership. It is important to note that if you plan on towing anything near the 4000-5000 pound range with the AWD Ridgeline, the transmission may be a weak point. I recommend considering other options if you plan on towing frequently. I confidently drove the car for 5 hours to have it inspected within a week. Despite being on vacation, I did not hesitate to take action. Although my home Honda dealer in Columbus Mississippi is awesome, I did not want to risk driving the car any further. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2018 Honda RTL-T Ridgeline. I did have a bit of trouble with ice build up inside the cap less gas tank, which caused the outer plastic flap to burst. It was a bit inconvenient, but I was able to remove the ice blockage with a hairdryer and screwdriver. Additionally, I had an issue with the engine RPMs fluctuating drastically, but thankfully I was able to drive the truck to my local Honda dealership. They were able to diagnose the issue as a transmission problem and replace it for me. While it was disappointing to have this issue with my Honda, I'm glad that the dealership was able to fix it for me. I also had to replace the regulator for my driver side window, but overall I'm still happy with my purchase. Thanks for listening!
