2023 Honda Ridgeline problems

The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.

First generation (YK1; 2006)

The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).

The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.

Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.

Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-23
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F74PB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The auto dimming feature on headlights fails to function. When the high beams are in use, they will not dim when approaching an oncoming vehicle. Conversely, when they are on low beam, they do not switch to high beam setting when it is totally dark outside and no cars are approaching. This fault was not disclosed during initial test drive and the dealerships only explanation is that they are sorry, but it can’t be fixed.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-24
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F52PB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Vehicle is equipped with auto dimming headlights. The system is way too sensitive and dims headlights on reflected road signs and distant street lights. Honda says it is working properly. It is basically worthless and very distracting because when driving through a neighborhood with no other cars around it dims and brightens constantly. Honda says there is no way to adjust sensitivity! Previously I believe you could. 2020 Ridgelines worked perfectly?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-10
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F72PB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Multiple issues that are safety concerns. 1. The lane mitigation system or forward collision warning system. These has been a constant problem from date of purchase. A. repeated warning flashes on dash when driving on any type of road with a slight curve or a standard turn, also two lane roads causes terrible warning on the dash as well. Very distracting! 2. The adaptive cruise control performs a hard brake/ing when another driver enters into my lane (in front of me) which causes other drivers entering into or following me to also make evasive maneuvers to avoid hitting my vehicle. People think I'm brake checking them. Constant problem and is a serious safety issue. 3. This is also a huge problem and can cause the police to be citing me for a distracted driver violation. My infotainment system has connectivity issue and is very distracting which is a safety issue. example: If I can get my phone connected correctly (constant connectivity issues typically at start up) while driving the infotainment system disconnects randomly and typically will not reconnect unless I stop my vehicle and turn it off so to reset the system. I am a CDL driver and touching or operating an electronic device (cell phone) will cause me to be cited by the police department, this has distracting me regularly. Honda is unwilling to do a software update to remedy these problems and I am gracefully asking for your help. We have spent 46K on a vehicle so we can have these safety features and this vehicle as been the opposite of safe. Super distracting and stressful to drive. I have spoken to the dealership four separate times about these issues but I recently found out by Honda that only one did the dealership document my concerns.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-31
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F82PB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The Ridgeline is unsafe with the mirror tilting and moving when in reverse. Mirrors need to be adjusted every time I go in reverse. EVERYTIME. This is unsafe as the mirror not only fails to stay static or wherever I adjust it to. It drops down (the mirror) every time I put the truck in reverse. The Ridgeline is unsafe when I back up, the mirrors move and distort and defeat the whole purpose of a mirror rendering it ineffective and a huge safety hazard. The Ridgeline is unsafe when the truck lunges forward when placing in park, after reverse. I suppose it is trying to get the mirror back to the Orginal position which needs to be adjusted back every-time. The mirror is not static. When placing in drive after reverse the lunge is not only jarring to my neck and back, it is completely unsafe. In my lay opinion what I think is happening is the truck’s computer is waiting for the mirrors to return to their position, but then are out of focus requiring me to pull over to readjust the mirror every time I back up. This is extremely unsafe especially in tight environments like parking spaces (backing out. Parking. Adjusting mirror to correct and safe position. Then proceeding with my trip). This is impractical in some situations and thus ineffectual in all others. Coupled with a wiring harness failure in cold temps for mirror, cameras are ineffective as well. I live in Minnesota and we have extreme winters. The harness issue is a previously recalled issue. But it is only compounded by these other issues.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F50PB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2023 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated while driving at approximately 25 MPH, several unknown warning lights were illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated that while depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. In addition, the contact stated while at a stop, the transmission shifted into neutral independently. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer and was diagnosed with a software error and the computer was restarted. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the same local dealer where it remained awaiting further diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F18PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My issue is about service with my dealer, I have been several times in dealer but they never have in stock the part to fix my recall.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F70PB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Automatic headlight dimming is too sensitive and does not reliably dim headlights when there is oncoming vehicles with headlights on. Many times, the high beams turn off entering a corner because they apparently sense the road sigh reflexion. This sudden change in the light produced entering the corner causes a distraction as well as a loss visibility of the approaching corner. Addionally, I have had vehicles flash their bright lights when approaching me to advise me to dim my lights.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F77PB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Automatic high beams do not dim consistently when approaching oncoming traffic. Honda has tried twice to fix the problem but it persists. They said they have no fix and I just have to turn off that feature. I have video that is available on YouTube. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-04
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F58PB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have had toxic fuel/engine smells in the cabin from the engine compartment. There are multiple complaints when searching Honda gas cabin smell online. Located the source is the Pcv vent hose on top of the engine. Honda needs to replace this hose with an odor barrier hose that doesn’t allow the fumes to be brought into the cabin via the fresh air intake.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-18
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F86PB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My brakes locked and my accelerator pedal deactivated without warning or cause. The engine and all accessories continued to work normally, but the gas pedal remained deactivated until I came to a complete stop. I was in the process of merging into the oncoming lane. I still own the vehicle but am trying to get the dealer to repurchase the truck. The vehicle(s) behind me had little warning and the result could have been a multi-vehicle collision. I had no way to know what caused the lockup and inability to drive away, and still don't know if or when the problem will recur. My Dealership examined my truck for 3 days and did not explain any plausible cause. They sent info to Honda's America HQ in California and told me that I might not ever receive a response, and if I do it will likely be at least a few weeks from now. They have given me nothing in writing. There was no warning of any kind either during the event or afterward. The lane ahead of me was completely clear of vehicles, pedestrians, animals, etc., but it was a slight S-curve. Driving conditions were ideal. it occurred during the middle of the day with no traction or glare issues.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-06
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F53PB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My 2023 Honda Ridgeline is leaking water from under the dashboard and leaving water on the passenger side front floorboard. This is also a safety risk due to the amount of electrical wiring from where the leak is originating. So far Honda cannot find the source of the leak despite the water on the carpet and rubber floormat.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-20
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F85PB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: After months of using my new Ridgeline the garage door closed inadvertently once i passed down the garage motor impacting the vehicle at the exit. The Ridgeline uses the homelink on the rear-view window which is included as part of the Ridgeline. I contacted HONDA and they referred me to Homelink for whom I also created an incident.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-07
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F53PB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Auto high beams do not work properly. When activated the high beams engage and disengage erratically. When cars are passing by as well as when you come up to a vehicle from behind, the high beams may or may not disengage. On approaching vehicles, faulty auto high beams could possibly blind, them causing an accident, or they respond by turning on their high beams blinding me. This is a known problem within the Honda Ridgeline community. This situation has happened multiple times prior to my filing this report.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-08
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F81PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 1- The GPS unit doesn't understand me. Im told it cannot be repaired. Honda won't repair it. This is a safety hazard because I have to scramble for my phone to get directions. 2- The charging pad doesn't work. Again, Honda admits to the problem but has no fix. I must look away to charge up the phone when using it for GPS.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-02
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F71PB
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: My steering locked up while moving at a very low speed (<5mph) and turning my wheel (not all the way). Voltage in the vehicle dropped (HVAC speed and lighting). A yellow caution/warning blipped for a second on the dash. I would not normally submit an issue like this but if this had happened at high speed, going down the road, the results could be catastrophic. I have seen the HVAC fan speed drop before while turning the wheel but never the steering lockup. This only happened once on Tuesday Night 1/2/24 at 11pm. This was not just the Power steering stopping working where i could overcome the turning with strength, it was locked up hard for less than a second (like the security steering solenoid engaging). This has to be a huge safety issue!!! I brought this to the dealer and the battery cable was loose. Since tightening the cable the issues has not re-occurred. I think that even with a loss of power/voltage, the steering should not lock up while the vehicle is moving. Please investigate.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-27
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F71PB
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Both Drivers and Passenger doors won't unlock or open without significant' force. This only occurs sometimes but has happened many times over the last year. I have had witnesses (son's) in the car when this happens. It seems like the door locking solenoid is holding the doors locked and both pulling the handle and tryin to flip the unlock switch are difficult. The risk here is in a crash or fire, someone without strength, won't be able to exit the vehicle. I video'd this on 27Apr24 (can provide if requested).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-22
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F81PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: As stated earlier, The GPS does not work properly. Its voice command system does not work. This causes the driver to manually put the information in and causes the driver to take eyes off the road. Second, the charging pad does not work. In both incidences, I am told Honda has no repair. They do not seem to care. Hundreds of other owners, of all Honda vehicles are having the same problem. A recall is needed and fines need to be accessed.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F57PB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Vehicle flashes automatic emergency braking sign on dashboard when it is confused by oncoming traffic in the other lane.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-21
  • VIN: 5FPYK3F54PB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: After a 2 1/2 drive (interstate, 75 mph on cruise contral, eco button not on), I took the exit to go home. Immediately after going from cruise to normal driving, the check engine light flashed and as I pushed down on the accelerator there was no power. The engine would rev up to 4000 rpm but would not go over 30 mph and would not shift. Once I got on the more level area of the road I did nurse it back to 55 but still very little power and the engine was struggling. I then stopped at a stop light and the engine shuddered when i tried to accelerate again, no power. Made it to a gas station, turned off the vehicle, filled the tank, then restarted, the engine ran just fine. Took it to the Honda dealership the same day and they were unable to find any codes on the computer and were unable to re-simulate what happened to the engine.

Negative 2023 Honda Ridgeline car reviews

  1. Edward Donnelly 2024-11-14

When driving at low speeds, between 20-50 km/hr, the truck tends to surge forward even with just a light touch on the gas pedal. Additionally, when you let your foot off the gas, the torque converter kicks in and slows the vehicle down without any coasting in between acceleration and engine braking. This can be quite frustrating. If the issue cannot be resolved, I may have to consider other options.

  2. Karson Lesch 2024-10-22

Just bought a new 2023 Ridgeline. It's very spacious and comfortable. It's very similar to our 2021 CR-V except for one thing - the brakes are a bit too soft for my liking. I have a mountainous trip coming up and I'm a bit nervous about the decline, but I'm sure it'll be fine. Other than that, the truck is perfect!

  3. Jasmin Gerlach 2024-09-03

I was really excited to get the 2023 Honda Ridgeline after reading all the great reviews, but unfortunately, my experience has been disappointing. While the vehicle drives well, it lacks power compared to my previous 8-cylinder Lexus. My main issue, however, is the low mileage I am getting. Despite the vehicle being advertised to get a minimum of 18 MPG for city and 24 for Hwy, I am only getting 13.8 miles per gallon. Even right out of the factory, I was only getting 14.9 MPG, which gradually sank to 12.8 before creeping back up to 13.8. When I brought this up with the dealer, they told me that new cars need to be driven a few miles to start getting good gas mileage, but I'm not convinced. I believe a new car should be getting better mileage from the start. At this point, I am considering returning the car to the dealer before my 30-day window closes. While there is no lemon law in TN, I can't imagine driving this car for its life with such poor gas mileage. Maybe I should have gone with an 8-cylinder GMC instead, at least then I would know what to expect.

  4. Pietro Okuneva 2024-08-27

The collision avoidance system of this car maker could use some improvement. It can be quite sensitive and annoying to turn off every time I get in the vehicle. I hope Honda can take note of this and make some changes. Additionally, it would be great if the truck had more ground clearance.

  5. Derek Hill 2024-07-23

I purchased my 2023 Honda Ridgeline in August 2023 and overall, I was happy with my lease. However, I encountered an issue when my truck wouldn't start after listening to the radio for less than 10 minutes with just ACC on. I called AAA and the man who came to jump-start my truck mentioned that he had helped another woman with a new Honda who had the same issue. I drove to Hyannis Honda and left the truck running until a service man came out to check it. The truck started fine and I was able to visit my daughter at the hospital without any issues. Unfortunately, the next day, I needed another jump-start. I called Hyannis Honda and spoke to the same man who had helped me before. We agreed that I would bring the truck in first thing Monday. I drove the truck around for an hour and left it running while I went into a shop at a farm stand. The next day, I tried to start the truck again but it was dead. This is unacceptable for a vehicle that hasn't even gone in for its first service. I will be calling again tomorrow morning to arrange for a third jump-start and will be taking the truck directly to Hyannis Honda.

  1. Misael Hudson 2024-11-25

If you're not planning on going off-road or towing, this vehicle is a great fit for your family. It's the king of the road!

  2. Carter Larkin 2024-11-24

I think this is the best car-truck hybrid available today. It has the smooth ride of a Pilot, but with the added versatility of a pick-up. The trunk in the bed is perfect for storing items like golf clubs, keeping them with you but out of sight. It also boasts great performance, and the RTL-E model comes with all the extras you could want or expect from a modern vehicle.

  3. Hobart Schuppe 2024-10-08

It's my first time driving a truck, and I really like it. This truck is beautiful, not too big and not too small - it's perfect for me. I highly recommend buying it.

  4. Hazle Blick 2024-09-11

You'll love everything about the Ridgeline! The cabin is packed with features and the interior is top-notch. Plus, the truck bed has everything you need.

  5. Mohammed Johnson 2024-08-21

This is an excellent vehicle, but it does not have power folding mirrors. If you have a single wide 96
