2010 Honda Ridgeline problems

The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.

First generation (YK1; 2006)

The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).

The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.

Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.

Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

Common 2010 Honda Ridgeline problems

The Honda Ridgeline, introduced in 2006, is a unique blend of ruggedness, smooth driving, and practicality. While it has gained a reputation for reliability, certain common problems have been reported by owners. This article will detail these issues, focusing on the 2010 model year.

  • Front struts: At higher mileage, front struts may require replacement, costing between $600 and $900 for two struts. This is a common issue in many vehicles as they age and accumulate miles.
  • Rusted U-joint bearing: A rusted U-joint bearing in the propeller shaft can cause vibrations, especially during acceleration or deceleration. While the propeller shaft replacement is relatively straightforward, the part is expensive. Explore options to rebuild it and replace the U-joint separately for cost savings.
  • Transmission cooler lines: Rust and leaks in the transmission cooler lines near the radiator and power steering lines on the front subframe are common, especially in regions with winter salt use. Timely repair of leaks is crucial to prevent further damage.
  • Faulty O-ring: A faulty O-ring can cause a whining noise from the power steering pump. This inexpensive and easy repair can be done with the help of videos online.
  • Plastic pulleys: Plastic pulleys (cable guides) allowing rear seats to fold up are prone to breaking in the 2006-2011 Ridgeline. Follow Honda TSB 10-068 for an easy and inexpensive fix using replacement metal pulleys.
  • Broken sway bar link: A broken sway bar link may cause rattling or clunking noises from the front end. Prompt replacement is essential, and a thorough inspection is recommended to identify any additional damaged components.
  • Brake calipers: Brake calipers may become seized, requiring replacement ($220-350). A malfunctioning caliper can cause "brake drag," giving the sensation that the car is not rolling freely.
  • Loose intermediate shaft heat shield: A loose intermediate shaft heat shield may lead to a rattle under the truck during acceleration. Replacing the heat shield and damaged nuts or gaskets should resolve the issue.
  • Grease spatters in wheel wells: Grease spatters in wheel wells or inside wheels indicate leaking CV boots. While a boot replacement is affordable, consider your mechanic's suggestion to replace the entire CV axle ($250 to $400 for one front CV axle).
  • Failing air-fuel ratio sensor: A failing air-fuel ratio sensor (Front O2 sensor) can trigger code P0134, costing around $90-$130 in labor plus the part cost.
  • Malfunctioning TPMS sensor: A malfunctioning TPMS sensor may keep the TPMS light on, requiring replacement ($80 to $170 for one sensor).

These common problems, while not affecting all 2010 Honda Ridgeline owners, can provide valuable insight for potential buyers or current owners looking to maintain their vehicles. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help ensure a reliable and enjoyable driving experience with the Honda Ridgeline.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-18
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5FPYK1F50AB
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On Friday 2/18/2022 I was pulling into a parking space with my 2010 Honda Ridgeline. When applying the brake, the vehicle suddenly accelerated unintentionally and hit the car in the opposing parking space. I stood on the brake harder when I sensed the vehicle lurching forward. After I struck the opposing car, I confirmed that my foot was on the brake and not touching the accelerator. Also, oddly the vehicle immediately stopped running and I noticed the car was in Reverse. I took pictures and video immediately after the incident both inside the car and outside before I touched anything. I then put the car in Park, started the car, and backed it up. I inspected both cars for damage and did not find any damage. I left a note for the other car. The owner later called and confirmed she did not find any damage. One interesting thing that I noticed is that the parking space had a sewer drain in the front left corner that had a large slope and snow/ice surrounding it. The unintended acceleration occurred right when the front left tire hit that sloping ice patch.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-03-29
  • VIN: 5FPYK1F2XAB
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL: I RECEIVED THE FIRST LETTER OF RECALL FROM AMERICAN HONDA ON MAR 29, 2016 FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER LETTER ON JULY 19, 2016. ENOUGH TO MENTION THAT I HAVE HARDLY DRIVEN MY TRUCK SINCE APR 1, 2016! THESE TWO LETTERS WERE FOLLOWED BY SEVERAL CALLS BY THE AMERICAN HONDA ON JUNE 30, JULY 07, JULY 18, JULY 29, & AUG 17; 2016 INFORMING ME THAT MY NEAREST HONDA DEALER WOULD CALL ME TO OFFER A RENTAL VEHICLE BEFORE BOTH -- DRIVER'S SIDE & PASSENGER SIDE -- AIRBAG INFLATORS ARE REPLACED. EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT THEY REPLACED MY DRIVER'S SIDE INFLATOR ON JULY 20, 2016, NOTHING HAS BEEN OFFERED TO ME SO FAR. IT WAS THE ONLY VEHICLE THAT I HAD UNTIL JULY 6TH, 2016 -- AFTER WHICH I HAD TO BUY A SMALL CAR ON MY OWN AS A REMEDY BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO TAKE THE RISK -- EXPLAINED TO ME BY THE AMERICAN HONDA ON THE ABOVE-LISTED DATES. THE QUESTION IS: IS IT WHAT THEY CALL 'THE TRICK OF THE TRADE' TO ABUSE THE CUSTOMERS IN THE NAME OF FULFILLING THEIR OBLIGATIONS? THE ONLY FAVOR THEY DID TO ME WAS THAT A GUY -- NAMELY, DONALD IN THE HONDA OF SPRING -- APOLOGIZED TO ME FOR NOT OFFERING ANY VEHICLE ON JULY 19, 2016. THAT'S ALL WHAT I HAVE HEARD FROM THEM. THIS IS WHILE I GENERALLY GO THERE EVERY MONTH FOR THE ELEMENTARY CHECKUPS SUCH AS OIL, AIR PRESSURE, ETC.. AND THEY KNOW ME QUITE WELL... SHAME ON THE CUSTODIANS OF THE RULE OF LAW!!!

2010 Honda Ridgeline recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2010 Honda Ridgeline.

2022-06-16
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame mounting surface, where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached, to corrode and possibly detach the fuel tank, which can result in a fuel leak.
  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is LCD.
2019-10-10
  • Manufacturer: Dorman Products, Inc.
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
  • Summary: Dorman Products, Inc. (Dorman) is recalling certain Accelerator Pedal Assemblies part numbers 699-114 and 825-5029-1, sold as replacement parts for 2003-2006 Acura MDX, 2004-2008 Acura TL and TSX, 2003-2007 Honda Accord, 2005-2006 Honda CR-V, 2007-2011 Honda Element, 2005-2008 Honda Pilot and 2006-2014 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
  • Consequence: If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

The vehicles are equipped with passenger frontal air bag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator, free of charge. The recall began August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are E5D and X5C.

Negative 2010 Honda Ridgeline car reviews

  1. Alden Wehner 2024-09-16

The driver's seat squeaks and unfortunately, Honda is currently unable to provide a repair for it. According to the Honda Field Service Person, the squeak is considered normal. The local dealership service writer found this remark amusing. However, Honda Customer Service may not be able to assist with a fix at this time. Based on this experience, the writer may not consider purchasing another Honda vehicle, but this is understandable given the circumstances.

  2. Emmet Morar 2024-05-19

We owned a 2010 RTL, which was our second Ridgeline. Although we both liked the truck, we decided to trade it for a 2008 Lexus GX470 after 17 months. You may wonder why? To us, the answer seems simple enough - while the Honda does some things well, it does an equal number of things poorly. While the highway manners and ride are great, the wind and road noise at highway speeds are absolutely terrible. When we tried to get Honda to address the wind/road noise, we were told that all Ridgelines are like that. Really? Does that mean they are designed to be noisy? Apparently, gas mileage is more important. Gas mileage? Well, our 2010 recently averaged only a measly 17.x mpg on a recent 3000 mile highway trip.

  3. Jensen Schmeler 2024-04-12

I owned a Ridgeline RTL for 30 months. Although I initially loved the vehicle, I encountered some quality issues. The rear sliding window seal would get pinched and leak, and there was wind noise on the front windshield due to the window seal pulling away, especially during cold weather. I also experienced a high-pitched 'whistle' that I tracked down to a body seam behind the XM antenna, which I was able to silence by covering the seam with electrical tape. Additionally, there was a dash rattle caused by the factory not tightening the left front speaker screws, and the dash had to be removed, creating a new rattle. I also had a problem with the heater temperature sensor control, and the door and body panel seams were aligned poorly. Lastly, the rear seat was uncomfortable.

  4. Tom Skiles 2024-04-08

I bought this vehicle because Consumer Reports rated it highly. However, I found it to be useless in the snow. The iframe crossbar underneath catches snow and stops it from moving, making it difficult to drive. Additionally, it did not have as good mileage as the Tacoma, although it was faster when needed. I also experienced issues with the power windows not going up in the cold, and had to pull them up by hand and press the button. The 4 position tire sensor was overly complex and expensive to maintain, as I had to pay a lot of money to reprogram it every time I rotated the tires (which was required twice a year for my Honda AWD). Overall, I found this vehicle to be quite needy. However, it was easy to sell, which was a relief as I could not get rid of it fast enough.

Positive 2010 Honda Ridgeline car reviews

  1. Harold Conroy 2025-01-09

I love my Ridgeline! It's comfortable, powerful, and practical. The rear window opening feature is especially great for cross ventilation, and the dual climate controls and heated front seats are luxurious touches usually found in more expensive cars. The fit and finish are perfect, and everything works flawlessly. Plus, it's incredibly quiet! I was really impressed with the Michelin tires, which handle very well. I haven't experienced any problems with braking or stopping distances, despite what Edmunds says. The only issue I've had is some wind noise on the driver's side coming from the mirror, but it disappears when the mirror is folded. I'm taking it to the dealer to get it fixed. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my Ridgeline!

  2. Winfield Kling 2024-11-21

A terrific happy medium. Very functional as a family car, work car and a hauler. Well designed inside and out. I ordered an aftermarket bed cover with lock which makes the bed like a huge trunk. Although gas mileage could be improved and a little more power would help, overall it's a great truck. I did experience an unusual whistle at certain speeds from wind noise, but the Honda dealership worked hard to fix the problem. They added a sunroof wind protector and bug shield in front which solved the problem.

  3. Vincent Hayes 2024-09-28

The car has a super performance overall, but the brakes could be improved. The ride is very comfortable and the interior is well laid out. However, the stop and go mileage is pretty poor, averaging between 15-17. On the bright side, Honda reliability is always a plus!

  4. Ola Champlin 2024-09-18

I see that you've had the 2010 Ridgeline for 30 days and 700 miles. It's great to hear that you've owned 7 Honda's and have had excellent experiences with them. The Ridgeline is an excellent truck that can meet most people's needs and it rides like a full-size car.

  5. Clay Durgan 2024-08-28

It's more of an SUV than a truck, but it has great cargo and towing capacity when you need it!
