2012 Honda Ridgeline problems
The Honda Ridgeline is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by Honda. Currently the company's only pickup, it is built using a unibody frame and a transverse-mounted engine. It is offered only in a crew–cab short-box configuration with one powertrain.
First generation (YK1; 2006)
The first-generation Ridgeline went on sale in March 2005 as a 2006 model year vehicle. The Car Design Yearbook called it "Honda's first foray into the true heartland of the American automotive way of life—the pickup truck." An engineering team from Honda R&D Americas, led by Gary Flint, designed the vehicle. According to the author of Driving Honda, the automaker wanted to target buyers who were looking to move to a pickup from sedans, minivans, and sport utility vehicles (SUV).
The development started in 2001 with a development mule using an extended version of a first-generation Acura MDX with a competitor's pickup bed integrated into the rear structure. After four years of development, a Sport Utility Truck Concept was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Later that same year, Honda unveiled a revised version at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show and announced the official name of the vehicle, the Ridgeline. The production version of the Ridgeline was unveiled the following year at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.
Honda's publications claim that the first generation Ridgeline shared only 7% of its components with other Honda vehicles. Its powertrain resembled the one used in the first-generation Acura MDX but was "extensively calibrated and strengthened" for heavier hauling and towing duties.
Production of the first generation Ridgeline ended in early 2015.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-01-20
- VIN: 5FPYK1F42CB
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: "TAKATA RECALL" I FOUND OUT MY VEHICLE WAS ON THE RECALL LIST IN FEBRUARY 2016, EVEN BEFORE I RECEIVED MY RECALL LETTER WHICH WAS MARCH 29, 2016. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING A VEHICLE THAT COULD SERIOUSLY INJURE ME OR EVEN KILL ME AND DO SERIOUS HARM TO ANY PASSENGERS AS WELL AS SOMEONE ELSE ON THE ROAD. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR 4 YEARS LIKE THIS WITH NO CONCERN WHATSOEVER FROM THE HONDA COMPANY. I TAKE MY GRANDDAUGHTERS AND ELDERLY MOTHER IN MY VEHICLE A LOT AND THEY COULD HAVE BEEN HURT. YES, HONDA HAS GIVEN ME A RENTAL, AFTER MUCH CONFUSION AND COMPLAINING, BUT I DID NOT BUY MY EXPENSIVE 2012 HONDA RIDGELINE TO HAVE IT SIT IN MY GARAGE UNTIL THEY THINK IT CAN BE FIXED. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE SUMMER OF 2016 TIMING WILL PROBABLY NOT HAPPEN. THESE VEHICLES ARE DANGEROUS TO BE DRIVING AND HONDA HAD ME SIGN A PAPER THAT I WOULD NOT DRIVE MINE. WHY DOESN'T HONDA TAKE BACK THE VEHICLES AND REPLACE THEM WITH A NEW, SAFER VEHICLE? MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 20,000 PLUS MILES ON IT AND IS LIKE NEW. EVEN REPLACING THE AIRBAGS ARE SCARY BECAUSE, IF THEY USE TAKATA AGAIN, HOW DO WE KNOW THESE NEWER AIRBAGS ARE SAFE? WE SHOULD PUT SOME OF THESE EXECUTIVES IN THESE VEHICLES AND LET THEM DRIVE THEM. IT'S LIKE PLAYING RUSSIAN ROULETTE WITH OUR LIVES!
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-11-01
- VIN: 5FPYK1F79CB
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I HAVE EXPERIENCED A LOSS IN POWER STEERING, SOMETIMES, WHEN DRIVING THROUGH PUDDLES OF WATER. I SEE THIS AS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN, AS IF YOU'RE EXPECTING TO BE ABLE TO TURN A CERTAIN WAY, AND THEN YOU CAN'T, YOU'RE GOING TO RUN INTO SOMETHING, AND THIS HAS ALMOST HAPPENED TO ME ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS. THIS HAPPENS WITHOUT WARNING, AND DOES NOT HAPPEN WITH EVERY PUDDLE. INDEED, IT HAPPENS FAIRLY INFREQUENTLY, WHICH TO ME, IS MORE DANGEROUS, AS YOU TEND TO FORGET ABOUT THE ISSUE. IF IT HAPPENED EVERY TIME, IT WOULD BECOME A HABIT. I SPOKE WITH TECHNICIANS AT HONDA, WHO WERE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. IT SEEMS THAT DUE TO A LACK OF A SPLASH GUARD, THE WATER SPLASHES UP ONTO THE BELT(S) AND THEY SLIP, AND THE POWER STEERING IS UNPOWERED FOR A SHORT TIME. THEY TOLD ME THERE IS NO FIX FOR THIS. THE DATE BELOW IS APPROXIMATE.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-01-20
- VIN: 5FPYK1F42CB
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL. TO DATE NOTHING HAS HAPPENED BUT IF I HADN'T SEEN SOMETHING ON MY LOCAL NEWS I WOULD STILL BE DRIVING MY VEHICLE, WHICH BY THE WAY ONLY HAS 22,000 OR SO MILES ON IT. I CONTACTED HONDA, WHICH WAS A DRAWN OUT AFFAIR TO LET THEM KNOW MY VEHICLE IS ON THE RECALL AND THEY SET SOMETHING UP FOR A RENTAL CAR. THEY HAD ME SIGN A PAPER STATING I WOULD NOT DRIVE MY VEHICLE, WHICH I WOULDN'T ANYWAY, AND SENT ME TO A RENTAL AGENCY. NOW I HAVE TO RETURN EVERY 30 DAYS TO REDO THE RENTAL CONTRACT AND IF MY RENTAL CAR IS SOLD, I WILL HAVE TO RETURN IT RIGHT AWAY. I DID NOT BUY MY $33,000 VEHICLE TO HAVE IT SIT IN MY GARAGE FOR AS LONG AS A YEAR OR MORE, ACCORDING TO WHAT THE HONDA DEALER TOLD ME. I DO NOT WANT ANOTHER TAKATA AIRBAG, BECAUSE THEY ARE THE PROBLEM TO BEGIN WITH AND HOW DO I KNOW THAT THE NEXT ONE WILL BE SAFE? I THINK THE HONDA COMPANY SHOULD TAKE MY VEHICLE AND GIVE ME A NEW SAFE VEHICLE. I WAS DRIVING AND TRANSPORTING MY THREE YOUNG GRANDDAUGHTERS AS WELL AS MY ELDERLY MOTHER IN MY VEHICLE AND NOW I COME TO FIND OUT I AS WELL AS THEY COULD HAVE BEEN TERRIBLY INJURED OR KILLED. DOES ANYONE AT THIS AGENCY OR THESE DEALERS PUT THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES IN THESE POSITIONS? I AM DISAPPOINTED THAT PEOPLE'S LIVES SEEM TO MEAN NOTHING. IF THESE AIRBAGS DO ERUPT, THEY CAN DANGEROUSLY INJURED THE OCCUPANTS AS WELL AS OTHERS OUT ON THE ROADWAYS. THE VEHICLES SHOULD BE REPLACED WITH NEW VEHICLES. MY VEHICLE SITS IN MY GARAGE UNTIL IT CAN BE FIXED AND THEN IT WILL BE TOWED TO THE HONDA DEALER. I DID NOT BUY MY VEHICLE TO HAVE IT SIT AND DEPEND ON A RENTAL FOR TRANSPORTATION.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-11-01
- VIN: 5FPYK1F20CB
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 HONDA RIDGELINE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE CONTACT OBSERVED THAT THE THIRD BRAKE LIGHT GARNISH SET DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, BUT IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. EIGHT MONTHS LATER, WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS GOING THROUGH A CAR WASH, THE THIRD BRAKE LIGHT GARNISH SET DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 15,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-29
- VIN: 5FPYK1F53CB
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: THE GAS GAUGE DOES NOT ACCURATELY INDICATE THE FUEL CAPACITY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. ACCORDING TO THE PEARSON HONDA DEALER, LOCATED ON HULL STREET ROAD, MIDLOTHIAN, VIRGINIA, THE GAUGE IS OPERATING "NORMAL". WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FULL, THE DASHBOARD INDICATOR IS SHOWING, 3/4 READING. AS THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN LONGER, IT'S DIFFICULT TO KNOW THE FUEL CAPACITY DUE TO THE FAULTY READING OF THE GAUGE. I'M CONVINCED THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM, NOTWITHSTANDING THE ASSURANCE FROM THE DEALER. MY RESEARCH INTO THIS GAS GAUGE ISSUE WITH THE HONDA RIDGELINE, INDICATES THAT THE 2010 RIDGELINE MODEL, ALSO HAD REPORT RELATING TO THIS GAUGE ISSUE. I DO NEED MORE RELIABLE ASSURANCE ABOUT THIS GAS GAUGE ISSUE. *TR
2012 Honda Ridgeline recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 12 recalls for different components of the 2012 Honda Ridgeline.
- Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2006-2014 Ridgeline vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame mounting surface, where the fuel tank mounting bands are attached, to corrode and possibly detach the fuel tank, which can result in a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is LCD.

The rotating portion of the accelerator pedal assembly may bind. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 124, "Accelerator Control Systems."
- Consequence: If the accelerator pedal binds, the engine may not quickly return to idle after the pedal is no longer pressed, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dorman will notify owners, and qualified service facilities will replace the affected accelerator pedal assemblies, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, using option 5. Dorman's number for this recall is AS1019XXXX.

Just traded up from an '06 RTL with Navi and I'm thrilled with the improvements. Some people complain about the lack of a complete redesign of the RL, but I couldn't be happier. The new Bali Blue color is the best yet, and the gauges and touch points are much better than the '06. The fog lights are now integrated, and there's been a slight horsepower gain (feels like substantially more). The software has been improved, the transmission has been tweaked, and there's now Bluetooth and an information center. The interior design has been improved too (they've toned down those metallic door handles), and the carpeted floor mats are a nice touch. As someone in the business of mechanical devices (I drive an RL to move them), I can attest that several years into a platform enhances reliability.

The car has a super performance overall, but the brakes could be improved. The ride is very comfortable and the interior is well laid out. However, the stop and go mileage is pretty poor, averaging between 15-17. On the bright side, Honda is known for its reliability!

If you're looking for an excellent family utility vehicle with great ride, comfort, and reliability, this truck is perfect for you. Sometimes I forget I'm driving a pickup truck. The rear seats have a pull-down center armrest with cup holders, which is a blessing when the kids are riding with me. I love the huge trunk space under the rear deck and the two-way deck door opening. I even carry my golf clubs under the lift-up back seats. I recently finished a 3600-mile round trip from California to Texas and back, and it was very comfortable. The truck averaged 21.8 MPG over the whole trip. High-grade Michelin tires are supplied on alloy wheels. You can't go wrong with this truck.

Great small truck! I love the ride and the interior design, especially the trunk under the bed. It would be even better with auto lights and memory seats.

A terrific happy medium. Very functional as a family car, work car and a hauler. Well designed inside and out. I ordered an aftermarket bed cover with lock which makes the bed like a huge trunk. Although gas mileage could be improved and a little more power would help, overall it's a great truck. I did experience an unusual whistle at certain speeds from wind noise, but the Honda dealership worked hard to fix the problem. They added a sunroof wind protector and bug shield in front which solved the problem.

This truck has had several issues that have been disappointing. The third brake light assembly broke off the truck on the highway after 2 years, which was out of warranty. Despite being a well-documented problem on forums, Honda USA was not helpful. The radio also had issues due to the antenna being located in the third brake light assembly. The brakes have needed to be replaced three times in three years, which is unusual for highway driving. The left front axle also blew out after three years. Additionally, the timing belt, spark plugs, and valve adjustment needed to be replaced for a total cost of $1500. The truck also requires frequent fluid changes, which is inconvenient. The seats are uncomfortable for moderate to long rides, and the interior design is confusing. Despite these issues, the truck may still hold some value until the new model is introduced.

I owned a Ridgeline RTL for 30 months. Although I initially loved the vehicle, I encountered some quality issues. The rear sliding window seal would get pinched and leak, and there was wind noise on the front windshield due to the window seal pulling away, especially during cold weather. Additionally, there was a high-pitched 'whistle' that I tracked down to a body seam behind the XM antenna, which could be silenced by covering the seam with electrical tape. I also experienced a dash rattle caused by the factory not tightening the left front speaker screws, which resulted in the dash having to be removed and creating a new rattle. Furthermore, there was a heater temperature sensor control problem, and the door and body panel seams were aligned poorly, making the rear seat uncomfortable.

I bought this vehicle because Consumer Reports rated it highly. However, I found it to be useless in the snow. The iframe crossbar underneath catches snow and stops it from moving, making it difficult to drive. Additionally, it did not have as good mileage as the Tacoma, although it was faster when needed. I also experienced issues with the power windows not going up in the cold, and had to pull them up by hand and press the button. The 4 position tire sensor was overly complex and expensive to maintain, as I had to pay a lot of money to reprogram it every time I rotated the tires (which was required twice a year for my Honda AWD). Overall, I found this vehicle to be quite needy. However, it was easy to sell, which was a relief as I could not get rid of it fast enough.

The driver's seat squeaks and unfortunately, Honda is currently unable to provide a repair for it. According to the Honda Field Service Person, the squeak is considered normal. The local dealership service writer found this remark amusing. However, Honda Customer Service may not be able to assist with a fix at this time. Based on this experience, the writer may not consider purchasing another Honda vehicle, but this is understandable given the circumstances.

We owned a 2010 RTL, which was our second Ridgeline. Although we enjoyed the truck, we decided to trade it in for a 2008 Lexus GX470 after 17 months. Why did we do this, you may ask? To us, the answer is simple - while the Honda excels in some areas, it falls short in others. Although it has great highway manners and ride quality, the wind and road noise at highway speeds is unbearable. When we brought up the issue with Honda, we were told that all Ridgelines are like that. Really? Are they designed to be noisy? Apparently, gas mileage is more important. Speaking of which, our 2010 only averaged a measly 17.x mpg on a recent 3000 mile highway trip.
