1996 Buick Park avenue problems
The Buick Park Avenue is a full-size car built by Buick. The nameplate was first used in 1975 for an appearance option package on the Electra 225 Limited. It became an Electra trim level in 1978 and its own model starting in the 1991 model year after the Electra was discontinued.
There were two generations of the Park Avenue that were manufactured in the United States until 2005. In 2007, the nameplate was revived on a large Buick sedan built by Shanghai GM for the Chinese market based on the Holden Caprice from the WM/WN range. The nameplate is derived from the affluent New York City boulevard, Park Avenue.
Electra Park Avenue (1975–1990)
1975-1976
Park Avenue first appeared as an appearance package on the 1975 Buick Electra Limited. It included similar seats to the Cadillac Sixty Special, optional full center console, Buick 455ci V8, posi-traction, 15-inch rallye sport wheels, rear automatic leveling, optional leather, optional Air Cushion Restraint System, remote mirror with thermometer, and automatic climate control. The 1976 cars were largely the same except for some styling revisions and added emissions systems.
1977-1984
Park Avenue, previously an appearance option package, became an official trim level on the Electra in 1978. Cosmetically, a different grille and redesigned tail lights were the only notable cosmetic changes that year but 1979 brought a redesigned, flat front end and a subtly different taillight treatment featuring a Buick crest and bisecting horizontal silver line. A more extensive redesign occurred for the 1980 model year.
1985-1990
Park Avenue remained the top trim on the Buick Electra, it was redesigned along with the rest of the Electra line, moving to the heavily downsized front wheel drive GM C-Body. It featured a Buick 3800 V6. The coupe version was discontinued in 1987. For 1989, Buick introduced the Park Avenue Ultra trim level. The Ultra was an upgrade to the Electra Park Avenue trim and featured a standard leather interior with dual 20-way power front seats designed and manufactured by Lear Siegler and styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign; lower-body accent exterior paint treatment; distinctive thick-padded french-seamed vinyl top with limousine-style rear-window surround (available only on Ultra); simulated burled elm trim on the doors and instrument panel; unique aluminum wheels; anti-lock brakes; chromed B-pillar moldings; specific grille and tail lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel; electronic instrumentation; padded glove-compartment door and unique interior door panel trim. The Park Avenue Ultra carried a higher base price than Cadillac's Sedan de Ville. The Park Avenue Ultra did not gain much popular recognition, however, until the following generation of Park Avenue where the "Ultra" badge offered even more features.

You've got to hand it to the Buick - even after 284,000 miles, it's still going strong with its second engine and fourth transmission. While some parts of my wife's Japanese car may last longer, the Buick is a real pleasure to drive on the highway, and it gets great mileage (around 28 mpg) too. Plus, it's a breeze to maintain, making it a truly worthwhile investment. When you consider the actual cost per mile over the long run, it's hard to beat the value that the Buick provides.

This car has 80,000 miles, yet handles like new! It has been to New York, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and Virginia. I have even taken it on trips in the snow up and down mountains that most cars get stuck on. I love this car so much that I am planning to get it re-painted!

I recently purchased a 96 Park Avenue Ultra because I am a fan of classic muscle cars, and I must say, it's a great car! Despite my friends laughing at me, I find it to be very comfortable to drive and it has tons of power. Although I haven't taken it on a long road trip yet, I'm getting just over 20mpg in town. The interior is awesome and comfortable, and it cannot be beat by the imports. The trunk is huge, and I think it will fit 4 sets of golf clubs, which I will find out this Friday. I sold my 2007 Honda Pilot (which was an awesome car but only got 15 MPG) so that I could use this as my daily driver. I even tinted the windows real dark so that people cannot see me! :)
-
You know how to maintain an older vehicle, right? I'm getting too old for that responsibility now.
-
This car belonged to my parents for many years. Although I used to think it was unattractive and resembled a grandma car, I have come to appreciate it. My parents kept it around for me to practice driving, and I began driving it on my learner's permit in 2006 when it was already a decade old. When I obtained my license in December, I did not yet have my own car, so I was compelled to continue driving it. I have now been driving it for three months. Although it appears less stylish than the small compact cars that many of my peers drive, it is a reliable vehicle with many useful features. The length of the car makes it difficult to judge the back when parking on the street or backing out of a parking lot, but it drives smoothly and I am grateful for the opportunity to practice with it.

This vehicle has had some issues, but I have been able to address them effectively. The passkey initially did not work, but I was able to program it for only $92. The blower motor was also malfunctioning, but I replaced the motor controller for $171. I was able to fix the washer pump and tank myself for only $19 in parts. Additionally, I replaced one air controller for $212.80 to fix the issue of air not blowing out of the dash vents. Despite these challenges, the car still has good gas mileage, over 30mpg Hwy. It is unfortunate that Buick has not maintained their previous level of quality with this vehicle, but I am confident in my ability to keep it running smoothly.
