1997 Buick Park avenue problems
The Buick Park Avenue is a full-size car built by Buick. The nameplate was first used in 1975 for an appearance option package on the Electra 225 Limited. It became an Electra trim level in 1978 and its own model starting in the 1991 model year after the Electra was discontinued.
There were two generations of the Park Avenue that were manufactured in the United States until 2005. In 2007, the nameplate was revived on a large Buick sedan built by Shanghai GM for the Chinese market based on the Holden Caprice from the WM/WN range. The nameplate is derived from the affluent New York City boulevard, Park Avenue.
Electra Park Avenue (1975–1990)
1975-1976
Park Avenue first appeared as an appearance package on the 1975 Buick Electra Limited. It included similar seats to the Cadillac Sixty Special, optional full center console, Buick 455ci V8, posi-traction, 15-inch rallye sport wheels, rear automatic leveling, optional leather, optional Air Cushion Restraint System, remote mirror with thermometer, and automatic climate control. The 1976 cars were largely the same except for some styling revisions and added emissions systems.
1977-1984
Park Avenue, previously an appearance option package, became an official trim level on the Electra in 1978. Cosmetically, a different grille and redesigned tail lights were the only notable cosmetic changes that year but 1979 brought a redesigned, flat front end and a subtly different taillight treatment featuring a Buick crest and bisecting horizontal silver line. A more extensive redesign occurred for the 1980 model year.
1985-1990
Park Avenue remained the top trim on the Buick Electra, it was redesigned along with the rest of the Electra line, moving to the heavily downsized front wheel drive GM C-Body. It featured a Buick 3800 V6. The coupe version was discontinued in 1987. For 1989, Buick introduced the Park Avenue Ultra trim level. The Ultra was an upgrade to the Electra Park Avenue trim and featured a standard leather interior with dual 20-way power front seats designed and manufactured by Lear Siegler and styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign; lower-body accent exterior paint treatment; distinctive thick-padded french-seamed vinyl top with limousine-style rear-window surround (available only on Ultra); simulated burled elm trim on the doors and instrument panel; unique aluminum wheels; anti-lock brakes; chromed B-pillar moldings; specific grille and tail lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel; electronic instrumentation; padded glove-compartment door and unique interior door panel trim. The Park Avenue Ultra carried a higher base price than Cadillac's Sedan de Ville. The Park Avenue Ultra did not gain much popular recognition, however, until the following generation of Park Avenue where the "Ultra" badge offered even more features.

ON JUNE 4TH WAS ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL WITH RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS FOR THREE DAYS IN THE TELEMETRY UNIT FOR RESPIRATORY DISTRESS. ON JUNE 10, 2011, I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC AND HE DISCOVERED A PIN HOLE LEAK IN THE PLASTIC FUEL RAIL ON THIS CAR. MY MECHANIC SAID THIS IS A HIGH PRESSURE FUEL RAIL AND GM MADE THIS OUT OF PLASTIC THAT FAILED. HE SAID THE CAR IS CAN NOT BE DRIVEN THAT WAY IT IS AND THAT THE PART NEED TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS NOT AVAILABLE PER THE GM DEALERS. HE ALSO TOLD ME THIS PART MAY BE UNDER A RECALL NOTICE AND THAT I SHOULD CHECK IT OUT. HE SAID IT WAS A WONDER THE CAR HAD NOT CAUGHT ON FIRE SINCE THE ENTIRE ENGINE WAS COVERED IN GASOLINE FROM THE LEAK FROM THE FUEL RAIL. I CONTACTED A BUICK DEALERSHIP CALLED GRAND AUTO, INC. IN THORNTON, CO AND TALKED WITH THE PARTS DEPARTMENT AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT. I TALKED WITH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT MANAGER NAMED BRIAN VAUGHN AND HE AND THE PARTS DEPARTMENT SAID THERE WAS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THIS PART AND THEY REFUSED TO EVEN LISTEN TO ME CONCERNING THE ISSUE. I LOOKED ON THE NHTSA WEB SITE AND FOUND MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS SAME PART THAT I HAVE. THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER RECALLS ON THIS YEAR AND MODEL CAR BUT GM NEVER NOTIFIED THE OWNERS ABOUT THE RECALLS UNTIL THEY HAD CLASS ACTION LAW SUITS AGAINST THEM. I NOW RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS ISSUES BECAUSE OF THIS DEFECTIVE PART.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-09-01
- VIN: 1G4CW52K3V4
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,STRUCTURE
- Summary: MY VEHICLE IS A 1997 BUICK PARK AVE WITH 140,000 MILES. I'M THE SECOND OWNER. MY IN-LAWS WERE THE ORIGINAL OWNERS. I GOT THE VEHICLE FROM THEM IN 1999 WITH APPROXIMATELY 9000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THEREFORE, I KNOW THE COMPLETE CAR CARE HISTORY OF THIS VEHICLE. YESTERDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2008 MY GRANDDAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THIS CAR AND SHE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO LOST OF STEERING CAPABILITIES. NO ONE WAS INJURED NOR BODY DAMAGE DUE TO HER LOW SPEED WHEN THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE TOW TRUCK OPERATOR INDICATED THAT THE ENGINE CRADLE SPLIT INTO PIECES DUE TO RUST AND THIS CAUSED THE STEERING TO FAIL SINCE THE STEERING RACK IS MOUNTED TO THIS ENGINE CRADLE. THE RUST THROUGH OF THIS THE ENGINE CRADLE (OR ENGINE FRAME) WAS CONFIRMED BY THE REPAIR SHOP TODAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2008. THE REPAIR SHOP INDICATED THAT THE 1997 BUICK PARK AVE'S HAD A STEEL ENGINE CRADLE AND THAT THE MOISTURE AND SALT GETS CAUGHT WITHIN THIS BOX FRAME DUE TO IT'S POSITION DIRECTLY BEHIND THE WHEEL WELLS. THE REPAIR SHOP INDICATED THAT 1998 PARK AVE'S( AND AFTER) HAVE ALUMINUM ENGINE CRADLES BUT THAT THE 1998 PART WILL NOT FIT THE 1997 BUICK PARK AVE. THE ONLY REPAIR IS TO FIND ANOTHER USED ENGINE CRADLE FROM A 1997 BUICK PARK AVE WHICH COSTS APPROXIMATELY $400 TO $500 JUST FOR THE USED PART. THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE IS TO BUY A NEW ENGINE CRADLE FROM A GM DEALERSHIP FOR APPROXIMATELY $1200 TO $1400. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS ENGINE CRADLE IS A VERY CRITICAL PART OF THE FRAME OF THE CAR AND SHOULD NOT RUST THROUGH WITHIN 10 YEARS. ALL OF THE STEERING CONTROLS ARE MOUNTED TO THIS PART AND WHEN THIS ENGINE CRADLE FAILS ALL STEERING CAPABILITIES ARE LOST. PLEASE REVIEW THIS WEB SITE FOR THE SAME PART FAILURE BY OTHER 1997 BUICK PARK AVE OWNERS (HTTP://WWW.ALLWORLDAUTO.COM/COMMENTS/1997_BUICK_PARK_AVENUE_COMMENTS_AND_COMPLAINTS_C42-256-1997-312-1.HTML. *TR

I TRIED IT AGAIN THE NEXT MORNING AND THEN HAD IT TOWED TO MY MECHANIC WHERE HE DISCOVERED THAT IT WAS 'LIQUID LOCKED BECAUSE ANTIFREEZE HAD LEAKED INTO A CYLINDER AND WOULD NOT ALLOW THE PISTON TO MOVE UP. I AM LOOKING AT 2500 DOLLARS FOR REPAIRS AND A WEEK TO GET THE PARTS AND DO IT. THERE ARE TSB'S OUT ON THIS PROBLEM AND IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM. I FEEL I SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM AND GM SHOULD SHOULDER THE COSTS FOR THE REPAIR BECAUSE IT WAS CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE GASKET. *TR

Positive 1997 Buick Park avenue car reviews

I bought this car because I wanted a big luxury car that could fit my wife and all 4 of my kids if necessary. It's great for cruising on interstates and handles curvy roads pretty well too. The car is very spacious and comfortable, with a large trunk. Surprisingly, it also gets great gas mileage, around 27-30 on the highway. It has served me well as a luxury car for business driving, as well as for family trips. The car is reliable with no mechanical or engine problems, and gets good gas mileage for its size.
-
Most replacement parts are considerably cheaper than those of other vehicles. If you're a big shopper, this car is great due to its spacious trunk. All controls are easy to find and operate. Although it doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Additionally, it is built very well with steel. This is the best vehicle I've ever owned out of four.
-
I'm so glad I bought this vehicle! Despite its high depreciation, I got a fantastic deal on a loaded, luxurious sedan in perfect condition with low mileage.

Hello! This is a great car! It's large, comfortable, and powerful. It has very good serviceability, although the belts could be improved. It has excellent reliability, having gone 143,000 miles without any major issues.

With 3 children, we needed a spacious car but didn't want a minivan. We found this car with 86000 miles and although we encountered some minor issues, it has been a comfortable ride overall. The accuators on the a/c went out and would not blow through the vents, which cost $500 to fix. Additionally, the window switch broke and cost $200 to repair, while the radiator leaked and required a $250 fix. Lastly, the harmonic balancer went out and cost $175 to replace. Despite these issues, we appreciate the comfort of this car, which was designed for long-distance driving and offers good gas mileage and power.

This vehicle has excellent potential and is comfortable and quiet. It has decent acceleration, good handling (with touring suspension), and an honest 30 MPG on the highway. It also has room for six people in comfort. However, the mechanicals are not as robust as they should be. The brake rotors have had to be replaced twice due to warpage, and a water pump failed at only 32000 miles (which is disgraceful). The power window switch has also failed once and is currently not working again. Additionally, the moisture sensing wipers have never worked properly, but they are not essential. Unfortunately, the oil pan gasket is currently leaking, and it will cost $375 to repair. I do know three other people with the same engine and oil pan problem. Despite these issues, I would still buy another one as nothing else in the domestic market compares.

I have owned three Buicks, all of them LeSabres. Unfortunately, my latest purchase has required significant repairs, including a new engine due to a faulty plastic manifold plenum used by GM. Additionally, the car has experienced issues with the window switch, water leakage, rotor warpage, and various other components. Despite these challenges, I have taken proactive steps to address each issue and ensure the car is in top condition.

Although this car has had its fair share of issues, the transmission and radiator have been reliable. Some components have been replaced multiple times, but the car has been well-maintained. There have been some leaks and issues with the headlights, alternators, steering pumps, fuel pumps, fuel senders, plastic intake manifold, water pump, dash relays, and air conditioning controls. Unfortunately, the rear defogger is currently not working and the fuel gauge is out again. Overall, it may not be the best option even if it's offered for free.

The Buick car boasts top-of-the-line features, but the interior plastic could benefit from higher quality materials. Despite this, the car has proven to be reliable and has not caused any major issues. It is worth noting that purchasing an extended warranty has provided added peace of mind. Any necessary repairs have been completed at a cost of between $3500 and $4000.

If you own a '97 Park Avenue that is approaching 75,000 miles, please be aware of some potential issues. I purchased mine new and opted for an extended warranty, but unfortunately, after the warranty expired, I experienced some problems such as cracking paint, malfunctioning cruise control, broken door handles and window switches, and a faulty gas gauge. I reached out to Pitre Buick before the warranty expired, but unfortunately, I did not receive the assistance I was hoping for. When I contacted Buick directly, they were unable to offer any help and suggested that I purchase a new car. It's important to keep these issues in mind when considering a Park Avenue with high mileage. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
