The Buick Park Avenue is a full-size car built by Buick. The nameplate was first used in 1975 for an appearance option package on the Electra 225 Limited. It became an Electra trim level in 1978 and its own model starting in the 1991 model year after the Electra was discontinued.

There were two generations of the Park Avenue that were manufactured in the United States until 2005. In 2007, the nameplate was revived on a large Buick sedan built by Shanghai GM for the Chinese market based on the Holden Caprice from the WM/WN range. The nameplate is derived from the affluent New York City boulevard, Park Avenue.

Electra Park Avenue (1975–1990)

1975-1976

Park Avenue first appeared as an appearance package on the 1975 Buick Electra Limited. It included similar seats to the Cadillac Sixty Special, optional full center console, Buick 455ci V8, posi-traction, 15-inch rallye sport wheels, rear automatic leveling, optional leather, optional Air Cushion Restraint System, remote mirror with thermometer, and automatic climate control. The 1976 cars were largely the same except for some styling revisions and added emissions systems.

1977-1984

Park Avenue, previously an appearance option package, became an official trim level on the Electra in 1978. Cosmetically, a different grille and redesigned tail lights were the only notable cosmetic changes that year but 1979 brought a redesigned, flat front end and a subtly different taillight treatment featuring a Buick crest and bisecting horizontal silver line. A more extensive redesign occurred for the 1980 model year.

1985-1990

Park Avenue remained the top trim on the Buick Electra, it was redesigned along with the rest of the Electra line, moving to the heavily downsized front wheel drive GM C-Body. It featured a Buick 3800 V6. The coupe version was discontinued in 1987. For 1989, Buick introduced the Park Avenue Ultra trim level. The Ultra was an upgrade to the Electra Park Avenue trim and featured a standard leather interior with dual 20-way power front seats designed and manufactured by Lear Siegler and styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign; lower-body accent exterior paint treatment; distinctive thick-padded french-seamed vinyl top with limousine-style rear-window surround (available only on Ultra); simulated burled elm trim on the doors and instrument panel; unique aluminum wheels; anti-lock brakes; chromed B-pillar moldings; specific grille and tail lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel; electronic instrumentation; padded glove-compartment door and unique interior door panel trim. The Park Avenue Ultra carried a higher base price than Cadillac's Sedan de Ville. The Park Avenue Ultra did not gain much popular recognition, however, until the following generation of Park Avenue where the "Ultra" badge offered even more features.

I WAS ADVISED TO TAKE IT IN TO A GM DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED YET THE ONLY THING I WAS TOLD BY A TECH THERE WAS THAT THEY HAD SEEN THIS PROBLEM BEFORE BUT NEVER IN MY TYPE VEHICLE. WELL I KNOW OF TWO OTHERS WITH RENDEZVOUS AS WELL AS RAINIER AND LE SABERS. I WENT ONLINE AND FILED A COMPLAINT ON THE BUICK WEBSITE AND STILL HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED WITH A SOLUTION. I FEEL THIS IS A FACTORY DEFECT AND SHOULD BE REPAIRED AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. ESPECIALLY IF BUICK HAS SEEN THIS PROBLEM IN SEVERAL VEHICLES. EVEN WITH POSSIBILITY OF THIS BEING DANGEROUS TO MYSELF AND MY CHILDREN, IT IS NOT EVEN AFFORDABLE FOR A SINGLE PARENT LIKE ME TO HAVE IT REPAIRED.   • Summary: DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS OR AT AN IDLE, KNOCKING NOISES CAME FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP FOR INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC DETERMINED THE ENGINE MOTOR MOUNTS WERE WORN AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE ENGINE MOTOR MOUNTS WERE REPLACED BY THE INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP.

  • Summary: A LEAKING FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR ON 2002 BUICK PARK AVE COULD HAVE CAUSED A FIRE OR EXPLOSION WHICH MAY RESULT IN A FATAL ACCIDENT OR INJURY. FUEL WAS LEAKING OUT OF THE VACUUM PORT OF THE PRESSURE REGULATOR. GM NO LONGER USES THE PART NUMBER 17113660 WHICH WAS LEAKING ON MY VEHICLE. THEY HAVE REPLACED IT WITH PART NUMBER 12583236. I PLAN TO REPLACE THE LEAKING FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR WITH A NEW ONE AND WILL KEEP THE OLD ONE FOR INSPECTION. *JB

ALSO HAS A PROBLEM WITH A REAR PUMP THAT HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. 36,400 MILES A/C QUIT AND WAS REPAIRED UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY PURCHASED THROUGH OUTSIDE COMPANY. ALSO FOUND BOTH CV BOOTS LEAKING WHICH AREN'T COVERED.

  • Summary: DT: THE DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD HER SHE NEEDS NEW BRAKES. LAST YEAR ON 4-20-04 SHE BROUGHT IT IN TO HAVE THE OIL CHANGED AND COMPLAINED ABOUT A PULSATION IN THE BRAKES. THEY TOLD HER THAT BOTH FRONT AND REAR BRAKES WERE GONE AND THEY REPLACED THEM AT NO CHARGE. ON 5-4-05. SHE IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH HER BRAKES. THE SERVICE MANAGER,TOLD HER THAT THE BRAKES WERE GONE AGAIN. THEY TOLD HER THAT IT WAS AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE AND WOULD NOT BE COVERED. *NM..ON APRIL 20, 2004 CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR AN OIL CHANGE, AND TO CHECK FOR PULSATION. SHORTLY AFTER CHECKING VEHICLE MECHANIC INFORMED CONSUMER THAT BRAKES ROTORS/PADS MALFUNCTIONED, AND REPLACED THEM. HOWEVER, BRAKES CONTINUED TO FAIL, AND CONSUMER ASKED FOR AN INVESTIGATION OF THE PROBLEM SINCE VEHICLE WAS NEW. *AK *SB

  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE EMERGENCY TRUNK RELEASE HANDLE MAY BE INSTALLED OR FORCED OUT OF THE PROPER POSITION.
  • Consequence: IF THE CABLE IS OUT OF THE PROPER POSITION, IT COULD INCREASE THE FORCE REQUIRED TO ACTIVATE THE EMERGENCY TRUNK RELEASE HANDLE AND A PERSON TRAPPED IN THE TRUNK MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RELEASE THE TRUNK LATCH USING THE EMERGENCY TRUNK RELEASE HANDLE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL SECURE THE EMERGENCY TRUNK RELEASE CABLE TO ENSURE THAT THE EMERGENCY TRUNK RELEASE HANDLE OPERATES PROPERLY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 19, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-800-521-7300.

    I've had to make 14 trips to the repair shop. However, the dealership has been awesome throughout the process. On the other hand, I have had some issues with GM. Unfortunately, they have not been returning my calls. Eventually, they did provide an extended warranty at no cost, but I never received anything in writing to confirm it. Thankfully, the dealership was able to print off their computer records to show the warranty. So far, they have made repairs to the doors, transmission, heads up computer, trunk leak, and on-star programming. Additionally, they fixed the key release, lock/unlock buttons, and door panel that kept coming off. The engine has been racing and running rough during start-up, but hopefully, there won't be any more issues in the future!

    I had a difficult experience with my Buick. The brakes have been problematic since the time of purchase, and despite having had over 5 brake jobs, the issue has not been resolved. Additionally, I experienced a major backache after sitting in the driver's seat for just 20 minutes. When I contacted the factory representative, they were not very empathetic and even suggested that my body was built weird. I have had to deal with more maintenance problems, and my car has spent over 20 days in the shop in just 5 months. Unfortunately, I have had similar experiences with other Buicks in the past, so I have decided to look for a different brand. Thank you for your understanding.

    I love the classic body style of a Park Avenue. The spacious and comfortable interior makes me feel safe and secure on the road. UPDATE: I love how spacious this car is and how it floats like a speed boat down the interstate. The seats are extremely comfortable and do not hurt my back. This classic car feels and rides the same as a Cadillac. The cost of regular maintenance is a lot less with the 3.8 series 2 when compared to Cadillac's North Star engine. Same body platform as the Cadillac DTS. The steering wheel column gear shift, pull-out headlight knob, and the 55/45 bench seats are some of my favorite features. The extra leg room, wider seats, and lots of cargo space for storage make it even better. The overall length of the vehicle looks classy and elegant.
