2000 Honda S2000 problems

honda logo

The Honda S2000 is a front-mid engine open top sports car that was manufactured by Japanese automobile manufacturer Honda, from 1999 until 2009. First shown as a concept car called the SSM at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, the production version was launched on April 15, 1999, to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary. The S2000 is named for its engine displacement of two litres, while "S" stood for "sports" carrying on in the tradition of the S500, S600, and S800 roadsters of the 1960s.

Several revisions were made throughout the car's production life, including changes to the engine, gearbox, suspension, interior and exterior. Officially two variants exist: the initial launch model was given the chassis code AP1; though cosmetically similar, the facelifted version, known as the AP2 in North America and Japan, incorporated significant changes to the drivetrain and suspension. Production of the S2000 ceased on August 19, 2009.

The Honda S2000 was notable for its exceptional specific power output of about 124 hp per litre, or about two horsepower per cubic inch, the highest of any mass production, naturally aspirated engined car, until 2010.

The S2000 has since become a legitimate modern classic car, having seen a significant appreciation in price for valued examples in good condition. In the JDM community and the car community as a whole, the most sought-after models are special edition productions such as the CR (Club Racer) in the USA market; the standard AP1 and AP2 models have achieved collectible status as well.

Common 2000 Honda S2000 problems

The Honda S2000, produced from 1999 to 2009, is a highly regarded sports car known for its high-revving VTEC engine and well-balanced chassis. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. In this article, we'll discuss some of the most frequently reported issues across various model years, based on owner complaints and expert analysis.

  • Steering Wheel Lock-Up: In the 2001 model year, some owners reported that their steering wheel locked up later in the car's life, typically around 80,000 miles. The cause of this issue is not entirely clear, and there is no known fix. This problem is considered severe due to the potential safety risks it poses.
  • Excessive Gear Grinding: One minor inconvenience issue reported across all S2000 model years is excessive gear grinding, particularly when the car is exposed to cold temperatures.
  • Excessive Noise from Wheel Bearings: Another common problem across all S2000 model years is excessive noise from wheel bearings, which can be a sign of wear and tear that may require replacement.
  • Engine Misfiring: Some S2000 owners have experienced engine misfiring, which can be caused by vacuum leaks or other issues affecting the air-fuel mixture .
  • Rust: Rust is a common problem with older Hondas, including the S2000. It is essential to check the underside of the car, particularly if you live in an area where salt is used on roads during winter months .
  • Transmission Issues: Some S2000 owners have reported difficulty shifting when cold, as well as grinding when shifting gears. Regularly changing transmission fluid and ensuring it is at the correct level can help prevent these issues.
  • Differential Oil Leaks: Differential oil leaks have been reported in some S2000s, which can be caused by worn or damaged seals. Regularly checking the differential oil level and condition can help identify and address this issue early on.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems, such as intermittent hesitation during hard acceleration and issues starting the car after a spin-out at the track, have been reported in some S2000s. These issues may be addressed through technical service bulletins or other repairs.

In conclusion, while the Honda S2000 is a highly regarded sports car, potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when evaluating specific model years and individual vehicles. Regular maintenance, such as frequent oil changes and checking fluid levels, can help prevent or address many of these issues.

2000 Honda S2000 engine

What is the common issue with S2000?

As idle / hesitation / kangerooing / misfire problems and misfires seem to be a common problem on the S2000, and indeed on most cars, I thought I would construct a thread to aid people in diagnosing their problems.

Does the S2000 have a good engine?

The S2000's crown jewel, however, is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine pumping out an incredible 240 horsepower at 8300 rpm and revving to an 8900-rpm redline. This content is imported from Third party.

How long do S2000 engines last?

Keep the car maintained, drive mostly on the highway and most modern engines will last 200K + miles, and an engine as stout as the F20C usually much longer than that.

Which Honda S2000 is best year?

The Honda S2000 is an excellent sports car option. If you want to purchase a used version for your life, we recommend the 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, or 2009 selection.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-06-11
  • VIN: JHMAP114XYT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE HONDA S2000 IS A MANUAL SHIFT CAR. THE MAP SENSOR ON THIS PARTICULAR CAR ADJUSTS WHEN NEEDED TO CONTROL AIR INTAKE OF THIS CAR. DURING SHIFTING AT HIGH SPEEDS, THE CAR WOULD COMPLETELY STALL AND SHUT OFF, DUE TO SOME TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH THIS SENSOR. ON DOZENS OF OCCASIONS, I WAS IN ATLANTA RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND THE CAR STALLED. THIS WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, AND I AM LUCKY THAT I OR NOBODY ELSE WAS HURT. LUCKILY I AM GOOD WITH A STICK SHIFT AND NEW TO PRESS THE SHIFT PEDAL AND COAST TO A SAFE PLACE WHERE I COULD RESTART THE CAR. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY EXPLAINED TO ME THAT IF THEY HAD A WARRANTY ON ALL PARTS OF THE CAR THEY WOULD GO OUT OF BUSINESS. BECAUSE OF THE APPROXIMATELY $900 REPAIR FEE, I SOUGHT HELP ON THE FORUMS OF THE LARGEST S2000 FANSITE. ON THE FORUMS SECTION OF THIS SITE, THERE ARE LITERALLY DOZENS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE REPORTED THE SAME PROBLEM. IN FACT, THERE IS A SECTION ON THE FORUM CALLED THE "MAP WACK", A PROCEDURE WHERE YOU TAKE A HAMMER AND WACK THE MAP SENSOR TO GET IT TO WORK PROPERLY. I AM OUTRAGED THAT THEY HAVE RECALLED MY BACK TAIL LIGHTS BECAUSE THE PAINT COLOR FADES, YET NO SUCH RECALL EXISTS FOR A DEVICE THAT CAN STALL AN S2000 AT ANY SPEED. I ENDED UP GETTING A NEW THROTTLE BODY AND SENSOR AND THE PROBLEM HAS NOT RESURFACED IN 2 YEARS. HOWEVER, I AM OUTRAGED THAT I HAD TO PAY FOR A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. I ONLY LABEL THIS AS A DEFECT BECAUSE THERE ARE LITERALLY DOZENS AND EVEN HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AS MINE ON THE S2000 FANSITE. *JB

Negative 2000 Honda S2000 car reviews

  1. Vern Osinski 2024-11-14

The 2000 and 2001 models have unfortunately experienced a series of electrical and mechanical issues, including oil starvation, oil consumption, ECU failure, spark plugs backing out, and serious issues with bent valves. While some of these issues may be attributed to driver error, many are due to quality control and design issues. It is important to note that some of these problems can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Additionally, it has been reported that Honda is starting to deny valid warranty claims for technicalities. It is worth noting that engine repair can be extremely costly due to the lack of aftermarket parts and low quantities. For more information and testimonials, please visit s2ki.com.

  2. Pierce Johnston 2024-09-17

I recently purchased a Honda convertible, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. The convertible top ripped and is quite loud on the freeway, causing me discomfort. Additionally, I had to pay $2000.00 to fix a broken valve, which was not covered under warranty. I also had to replace the xenon bulb three times. Despite these issues, I appreciate the car's appearance and performance, but I believe there is room for improvement in terms of reliability.

  3. Bill Mann 2024-08-23

This car is fun to drive but not when it is sitting in the driveway with a need of major engine repair. The reason, the early years have a bad flow of oil. Not quite sure why but apparently the Europeans caught on to this and fixed the problem early on. This car sucks oil. Honda dealerships need to tell people this when purchasing. Honda also needs to make others aware of this situation. Low oil in any engine is a bad thing. Especially when the oil light never comes on to warn the driver.

Positive 2000 Honda S2000 car reviews

  1. Westley Hane 2024-11-20

This car is a blast to drive! It demands your full attention with its responsive handling and engaging gearshifter. I also own an old 911 and this is the closest thing I've found to driving it. While I wish it had a bit more power at the line, I believe the 2004 2.2 liter model is supposed to address that. Additionally, I'm in the process of upgrading the stereo speakers to produce a fuller sound. The 2000 model only had door speakers, which are partially blocked by your legs.

  2. Armando McDermott 2024-11-14

Driving my car is my favourite part of the day. This car has everything you could ever want in a sports car: great handling, power, a 9k redline, a convertible top, new technology, and much more. It also gets an average of about 25mpg. Below 6k rmps, this car is extremely fun to drive and still has enough power to get you where you need to go. Above 6k rmps (VTEC), it's like a roller coaster ride. The car rockets forward as you watch the digital speedometer climb. When the rev limiter lights up, you know it's time to shift for another 3k rmps of powerful, head-jerking, adrenaline-inducing fun.

  3. Sage Armstrong 2024-11-06

This car broke in well at 15,000 miles. I call it 'Songbird' for its sound. The more I drive it, the more I like it. Don't be afraid to buy one with some miles on it. Don't listen to the naysayers, just drive it.

  4. Ariel Williamson 2024-10-25

In 2000, I was on the hunt for a sports car. I test drove the new Lexus, Audi GT, and Boxter before getting behind the wheel of the S2000. From the moment I started driving it, I was hooked! The S2000 had everything I was looking for - speed, go-kart handling, and reliability. As someone who spends 50% of their time in England, I knew I had to have this car. I was lucky enough to find a 1999 Red S2000 with only 1500 miles on it. The previous owner, a little old lady, thought it was too hot for her and kept it in her garage. The winding backroads of England were made for this car, and I have had an absolute blast driving it! Three years later, I now have two S2000's (for the price of one Porsche) and I couldn't be happier. Not a single complaint to be had!

  5. Carlo Spencer 2024-10-06

The Honda S2000 is everything in one package - affordable, stylish, and a hell of a lot of fun to drive.
