2014 Toyota Highlander problems
The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.
Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.
The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

Common 2014 Toyota Highlander problems
The Toyota Highlander is known for its reliability, but like any vehicle, it can develop problems over time. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners of the 2014 Toyota Highlander, based on search results:
- Excessive Wind Noise: Some 2014 Toyota Highlander owners have reported hearing loud squealing and whistling noises from inside the cabin at high speeds. This may be due to the side mirrors or loose door moldings.
- Trim Gap on the Passenger Side: Many 2013-2016 Highlander owners, including the 2014 model, have reported a whistling wind noise in the passenger area at high speeds (usually starting at around 40 mph). While the culprit hasn’t been officially pinpointed, many found that replacing the chrome trim solved the problem.

- Tailgate Not Opening or Closing: Some owners have reported issues with the tailgate not opening or closing properly, which can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty sensors or mechanical problems.
- Moldy Smell From Vents: Some 2014 Toyota Highlander owners have reported a moldy smell coming from the vents, which can be caused by moisture buildup in the air conditioning system.
- Infotainment System: Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including difficulty connecting to Bluetooth and other connectivity issues.
- Head Bolts: Some owners of the 3rd generation Toyota Highlander have reported issues with the head bolts, which can cause engine problems if not addressed.
It's important to note that these issues are not universal and may only affect a small percentage of 2014 Toyota Highlanders. If you're considering purchasing a used Highlander, it's always a good idea to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic to identify any potential issues.

It was impossible to see so we pulled over and waited for the rain to stop. After analyzing the issue the motor had failed. We contacted Toyota for a replacement motor. What we found: No wiper motors are available from Toyota, no aftermarket parts are available. We ordered a motor from Gladstone Toyota but after a couple of weeks began calling. What I was told: no wiper motors are available and there is no release date for when they will be. I began calling around and found that some dealers (TRD Shop) have over 200 on back order and only 80 were released last time they made them. where we are today: We have a vehicle made by Toyota that is unsafe to operate due to the fact the wipers don't work We replaced the wiper switch $232.00 but that only allowed the rear wipers to function further inspection verified the front wiper motor failed in conjunction with the switch that controls the rear wipers. I contacted Toyota engagement center and reported the issues. case #230106000756 they told us they would have a parts specialist contact us no later than 01-09-23 that never happened ans on 01-10-23 I contacted them to let them know we haven't heard anything. They have yet to reply or contact us regarding our back order. We purchased the vehicle new from Gladstone Toyota all maintenance done there. Issue is the vehicle is unsafe to drive in Oregon in the middle of winter, Parts are not available to repair Toyota unwilling to reply or see what they can do for us using their online engagement website.

- Summary: rear tailgate door non-functioning. auto door button does not work and door cannot be opened manually. serious safety issue if car in accident and side doors won't open. checked by dealer in dec. 2020, and they knew about problem and not covered under warrranty. toyota knew about problem in march 2016 and issued service bulletin T-SB-0023-16 which clearly states problem and how to fix in 8 pages.; and only covers 2014/2015 highlanders under warranty. no warning lights; tailgate failed in dec. 2020. vehicle only inspected by toyota dealer in roseville, CA. if Toyota is willing to fix some highlanders, why would they exclude others out of warranty? - Summary: While driving the vehicle, the rear pane of the vehicle's moon roof spontaneously shattered into pieces. The moon roof has two basic components - the soft cover that lies under the glass moon roof and the 2-pane glass moon roof. Had the soft cover not been closed, the glass shards would have rained down upon the driver and passengers in the vehicle. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by an insurance adjuster, but there are numerous reports of this same problem occurring in other Toyota Highlanders on the internet. This issue appears to be being ignored by Toyota despite numerous reports across several model years of the vehicle. There were no warning signs of any kind issued by the vehicle before this occurred. This condition poses a serious threat to health and safety and should be addressed immediately by NHTSA.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-06

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

From Toyota's own service Bulletin T-SB-0023-16: "Some 2014 – 2015 model year Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles may exhibit a condition in which the Power Back Door is inoperative or stops during operation. In some cases this condition may be associated with cold weather."

For example, the door will not open properly causing hands, fingers, and other object to get jammed in the doorway when trying to close it manually or when the door closes automatically without warning. It also does not close properly when the hatch is not working properly which could potentially be an issue while traveling where objects could fall out of the vehicle and injure other drivers. There are several articles online reporting the issue and will only be fixed if the vehicle is under warranty. Many of these vehicles are out of warranty due to their age. There was no prior warning other than a beeping noise when the door would not close properly.

This Highlander is a fantastic choice for a reasonably priced midsize SUV. I'm glad to hear that the maintenance has been minimal and that you're happy with how it's holding up. It's a great car for both short and long trips, with excellent comfort and convenience.
-
I've been driving my 3rd generation Toyota Highlander 2014 LE Plus AWD for 2 years now and I must say, it's been a reliable vehicle. However, the fuel economy hasn't been as great as I had hoped. When I first bought it, the sticker suggested it would get 20 mpg combined, but after 2 years of combined city and highway driving (almost always with the green Eco sign on), my best average is 15.6 mpg, which is a bit disappointing. Additionally, I've had a few minor issues with the rear-view camera malfunctioning and the car key getting stuck a couple of times, which can be frustrating. Overall though, I still enjoy driving my Highlander and appreciate its reliability.
-
The Highlander's visibility is limited, especially to the rear and passenger side. The backup camera screen can be difficult to see during the day and night, which can be distracting. Additionally, the rear window is designed more for style than safety, which can make it challenging to see cars directly behind you. The blind spots can also be problematic when changing lanes, especially at night or during rainy weather. While the Highlander may not be the easiest vehicle to drive, there are options available such as blindspot and front collision sensors that can improve safety. It's important to drive safely and maintain control of the vehicle at all times. Lastly, there may be some issues with the audio system, but these can be resolved with proper troubleshooting. Overall, it's important to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions when driving the Highlander.I just let it alone and it just starts working again after a few minutes. However, I do wish that the designers of the Highlander had included blindspot detection. Despite this, I still enjoy my Highlander.

It's such a pleasure to drive this car, it feels luxurious without being pretentious. Although the ride was a little choppy at first, it handled beautifully. After six months of owning it, I decided to replace the factory-installed tires with Michelin Premier LTX tires, and it made a big difference! The ride is now very smooth, and it handles better in wet road conditions. Overall, it's an absolute joy to drive!
-
If you're looking for a comfortable SUV ride with excellent longevity, this is the vehicle for you.

After months of researching the 3-row SUV market and test driving about 10 different vehicles, I confidently purchased the 2014 Highlander. At first, I loved everything about it - it was comfortable, smooth, quiet, and fun to drive. However, I recently encountered some issues with starting the car, which has been frustrating. Despite my efforts to turn off all automatic dome lights and keep everything off when I turn it off and until I start it, the car still won't start. While this has been a disappointing experience, I am confident that the issue can be resolved. Overall, I still believe that the 2014 Highlander is a great vehicle and I stand by my decision to purchase it.

I recently purchased a Toyota Highlander XLE AWD 2014, but unfortunately, I encountered an issue just two weeks after my purchase. Whenever I step on the brake and release it, I hear a strange noise coming from behind. I took it to my Toyota dealer, and they informed me that this is a common issue with all the Toyota cars on the lot. Despite this setback, I still believe that Toyota is a great brand and I would recommend it to others. Thank you for your attention.

We have a Volvo XC70, Honda Accord, Mustang, and now a Highlander with 7 seats. Although it doesn't quite measure up to the others, it's still a good car. The interior is nice, but not quite as luxurious as the Volvo. It drives well, but it's not as exciting as the Accord or Mustang. As an SUV, it's not the most agile car out there. The front of the car looks great, but the rear is a bit odd. The JBL stereo initially had some issues with muddy sound, but after some tinkering, I discovered a setting for 'surround sound' that was affecting the audio quality. Once I changed it to 'stereo,' the sound quality improved significantly. However, the sound still seems to be concentrated in the dashboard, so you need to adjust the fader to get sound from all around. Overall, the Highlander is a competent and quiet car, but it may not be the most exciting choice out there. That being said, it's still a reliable Toyota!

The Toyota Highlander has a known issue with its VVT-i system, which has been documented in a service bulletin since 2009. Unfortunately, Toyota has not taken any action to address or redesign the problem, resulting in a 17-hour service at $90 per hour. While this issue has not been deemed a safety concern, it is still a frustrating problem for owners. In addition, the vehicle's size may be a bit overwhelming for some, and the interior can feel cramped. The seats are not the most comfortable, and the fuel mileage could be better. However, the Highlander's interior is well-appointed and of good quality, and the seat warmers are a nice touch. The vehicle's off-road performance is not great, but it performs adequately on the road. Loading a child into the vehicle can be a bit challenging due to the narrow door openings. The voice recognition system could use some improvement, but the backup camera works well. The Highlander's transmission can experience some lag at low speeds, but it is generally reliable. While there are some drawbacks to the Highlander, it is still a decent vehicle overall. If you are considering purchasing one, it is important to weigh the pros and cons and decide if it is the right fit for you.

I purchased my 2014 Highlander Limited in 2017 at 52,000 miles and had no issues at all for 3 years. We took great care of the vehicle, with regular maintenance and oil changes. Unfortunately, during a 3 hour road trip, the engine suddenly failed just before reaching our destination. Despite the unexpected incident, I was able to pull over safely and avoid any accidents. After spending over $9,000 on a full engine replacement and upper manifold, I was disappointed to learn that Toyota denied any responsibility for the issue. Although I have owned multiple Toyota/Lexus vehicles, this experience has left me feeling let down. Given that the vehicle was well-maintained and only 6 years old with 102,000 miles on it, I had hoped for a better outcome. I will be exploring other options for my next purchase.
