2010 Jeep Patriot problems

The Jeep Patriot (MK74) is a front-engine five-door compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep, having debuted with the Jeep Compass in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show for the 2007 model year. Both cars, as well as Dodge Caliber shared the GS platform, differentiated by their styling and marketing, with the Patriot exclusively offering a four-wheel drive system, marketed as Freedom Drive II.

The Patriot was manufactured at Chrysler's Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant alongside the Compass. Although the model was still selling well even as it was essentially unchanged as it entered its 11th model year, production ended with the 2017 model year.

Design

In the U.S. the Patriot uses either the 2.0 L or 2.4 L World gasoline I4 engine. Both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive are available. The Patriot features two four-wheel drive systems both of which are electronically controlled.

The standard four-wheel drive system is called Freedom Drive I. This is a full-time Automatic 4WD that directly drives the front differential carrier from the transmission output and is exclusively front-wheel drive whenever 4WD is not commanded by the powertrain control module or the driver. The transaxle supplies power to the rear drive unit via a driveshaft that is in constant mesh with the front carrier. The driveshaft joins the front transaxle through a small, fixed ratio gearbox which Jeep refers to as the Power Transfer Unit. The driveshaft is suspended by a centrally mounted carrier bearing and delivers torque to an assembly at the rear of the vehicle Jeep refers to as the Rear Drive Unit. An electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch located inside the rear drive unit variably couples this driveshaft with a pinion gear that drives an open differential carrier and delivers power to the rear wheels. The clutch coupling force is sufficient to supply up to 100% of available engine torque to the rear axle. A driver accessible control located between the front seats allows the driver to command a locked 4wd mode that simulates the behavior of a fixed center coupling on a conventional 4WD vehicle. In both the default operating mode and the driver selected 4WD mode, the operation of this clutch is computer controlled and it will disconnect and revert to automatic operation above 35 miles per hour. To prevent static driveline windup the powertrain controller will vary the force of clutch engagement while the vehicle is traveling on a curved path, using input from a steering angle sensor.

An optional four-wheel drive system called Freedom Drive II is based on Freedom Drive I and operates similarly, however in combination with a unique CVT transmission it is capable of a 19:1 gear reduction simulating a low range usually found in vehicles with dedicated transfer cases. This 19:1 "crawl" ratio is achieved with a much lower (numerically higher) ring and pinion ratio compared to non Freedom Drive II vehicles and permits the driver to optionally hold this initial ratio for enhanced control at very low speeds.

Freedom Drive II is part of an equipment package including several other enhancements intended for use on more difficult terrain and Jeep Patriots with this package bear Jeep's "Trail Rated" badging.

All Jeep Patriots include an enhanced traction control system that operates on both driven axles (4WD models) or on the front axle only (2WD models) to supply torque to all four wheels effectively and without a locking or limited slip differential. This system is branded BLD by Jeep and operates by applying braking force to a wheel on either (driven) axle if that wheel is measured spinning faster than the other wheel on the same axle. BLD remains in effect even if the driver selects the traction control off option.

The 2.4 L GEMA I4 is an option for the 4X2 model Patriot.

For Europe and Australia, a 2.0 L (1968 cc; 120 cid; 140ps) Volkswagen-manufactured diesel engine is fitted along with a 6-speed manual gearbox. All EU cars are fitted as standard with four wheel drive and a version of the Freedom Drive System that tuned differently from the U.S. versions, but with similar capability to FDII with brake traction control and three switchable electronic stability control and traction control settings for on or off-road use.

The Patriot won the 2007 Green 4x4 Award and the 2008 4x4 of the Year in the UK.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-25
  • VIN: 1J4NF2GB4AD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: ANYTIME RAINFALL IS EXPERIENCED, A HUGE LEAK OCCURS COMING THROUGH THE FRONT DOME LIGHT. IT APPEARS THIS LEAK IS CAUSED BY A DEFECT WITHIN THE DRAINAGE TUBES ATTACHED TO THE SUNROOF OF THE VEHICLE. EVERY TIME THIS HAPPENS, 8OZ-12OZ OF WATER COME SPLASHING DOWN ONTO THE CENTER CONSOLE FROM THE FRONT DOME LIGHT. THIS CAUSES POTENTIAL DAMAGE TO THE CARS RADIO AND POWER SOCKETS BELOW, AS WELL AS A HUGE VISUAL INTERFERENCE WHILE DRIVING. EACH TIME I AM DRIVING DURING RAINFALL OR SHORTLY AFTER, I MUST HOLD A CATCHING DEVICE (A CUP, ETC) TO CATCH THE WATER MANUALLY WHILE IT IS FALLING FROM THE CEILING, WHICH IMPAIRS MY ABILITY TO DRIVE SAFELY. THIS SEEMS TO BE A CONSISTENT PROBLEM WITH JEEP PATRIOTS 2007-2017 AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE. THIS LOOKS TO BE A MANUFACTURE DEFECT. JEEP (CHRYSLER) DOES NOT COVER REPAIRS OR REPLACEMENTS FOR THIS PROBLEM.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-12-21
  • VIN: 1J4NF2GB4AD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER

I GOT OUT OF WORK AT 8 AND THE ROADS WERE BAD AS I WAS GOING DOWN JEFFERSON RD MY CAR STARTED SLIDING SO I JUST LET THE CAR GO BECAUSE I COULDN'T STOP IT IS INEVITABLE. SO MY CAR HIT THE DITCH BY THE CHURCH. I WAS PARANOID BUT I KNEW I WAS FINE SO I WAS ABLE TO TAKE MY CAR OUT OF THE DITCH AND I GOT DOWN AND CHECKED IT AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE BUT THE RADIATOR WAS LEAKING MY COOLANT. SO I GOT IN MY CAR AND DROVE CAREFULLY AND SLOW UNTIL I GOT HOME. I GOT MY RADIATOR FIX BECAUSE IS THE ONLY CAR THAT I HAVE TO MOVE AROUND. I TOOK MY CAR TO GET CHECKED OUT BECAUSE I WAS SCARED THAT SOMETHING ELSE MIGHT HAVE BROKE. I TOOK IT TO BUDGET TIRE WHERE THEY TOLD ME ABOUT ALL THIS STUFF THAT I NEED IT FIX WHICH I KNEW I DIDN'T NEED THEM FIX BECAUSE I GOT MY CAR FIXED BEFORE WINTER HIT SO I TOLD THEM THAT I WAS GOING TO GET A SECOND OPINION SO I TOOK IT TO TUFTS AUTO SERVICE. THEY CHECKED MY CAR WHILE I WAS THERE AND SHOWED ME THAT NONE OF THE THINGS THAT BUDGET TIRE SAID IT WAS WRONG WAS WRONG. THEY SAID EVERYTHING WAS FINE EXCEPT THE SUBFRAME. THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD COST AROUND 2500 TO GET IT FIXED WITH THEM BUT THAT TOLD ME THAT I COULD GET A RECALL BECAUSE OF SAFETY. MAIN REASON WHY I TOOK IT TO GET CHECKED OUT WAS BECAUSE OF SAFETY REASON. I DIDN'T WANT TO COST AN ACCIDENT SO I WANTED TO TAKE EVERY PRECAUTION THAT I NEED IT. THEY TOLD ME TO CALL THE JEEP DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY SHOULD BE A ABLE TO DO A RECALL SINCE IS A HAZARD DRIVING IT LIKE THAT. I TALKED TO THEM AND THEY TOLD ME THAT I HAD NO RECALL FOR MY CAR. I BOUGHT MY CAR FROM MY FRIEND. I HAVE INSURANCE AND EVERYTHING IS UP TO DATE.

Negative 2010 Jeep Patriot car reviews

  1. Bennie Gaylord 2024-10-01

I purchased the 2.0 lt automatic with CVT and experienced some issues when driving at slow speeds. However, I have found that the transmission can be a bit jerky when decelerating and re-accelerating around 10-15 MPH. Additionally, I have noticed a slight hesitation when starting the car, particularly on colder days around 30-40 degrees or when parked on a hill. On the positive side, the stereo is fantastic for the price and the aux input is a great feature. While an additional power outlet would have been appreciated, the current one is sufficient. I have noticed some squeaking in the rear suspension, but overall, for the price, this is a decent SUV. However, there is room for improvement in the controls for temperature, which feel a bit cheap and don't always seem to get the setting right.

  2. Claud Hodkiewicz 2024-09-16

The vehicle has several issues that require attention. The body and suspension have rusted, and the transmission chugs at times, making it slow to get up to speed. The dealership has attempted to repair the transmission, but it has not been successful. Additionally, the vehicle has required two sets of brakes in just 20000 miles. The electrical system is also problematic, with the 4-wheel drive engaging without warning and the ABS lights coming on. The engine also knocks until it is warm. These issues require immediate attention to ensure the vehicle is safe and reliable.

  3. Maximo Herman 2024-05-15

The Patriot is an affordable option, but as with most things, you get what you pay for. Unfortunately, the CVT can be quite jerky at low speeds, and the four-cylinder engine can sound like a diesel until it warms up. Jeep has stated that the jerking is considered normal and they are not currently working on a fix. Overall, the Patriot is a good option for those seeking affordable transportation, but it may not provide the most refined ride.

It sounds like there are a few things that need attention, such as rust issues, an engine code, and front alignment. However, it's great to hear that it runs strong and smooth!

All ball joints and transmission issues have been resolved, and the electric issues have been fixed. The vehicle is now in excellent condition and ready for use.

I traded my 2009 Sentra SR for this amazing Jeep and I couldn't be happier! It feels so big and safe, and it's incredibly quiet and smooth. The engine can be a bit noisy when it's cold, but once it's up to operating temperature, it's absolutely fine. This is my first Jeep and I'm blown away by the quality of the interior, paint, and fit/finish - it's miles better than the Sentra. The CVT is also a huge improvement - the Sentra used to moan, but this Jeep is a dream to drive. I love everything about it - the ride, the ride height, the adjustable seat, the interior color, and the wheels. It's a seriously good-looking vehicle! I think of it more as a wagon than an SUV, and on my last trip, I got an impressive 26 MPG. I'm hoping it gets even better as the motor breaks in. I'm also loving the heated seats, satellite radio, and remote start - they're such great features! I'm really looking forward to enjoying this Jeep for a long time to come!

I really enjoyed this vehicle! It was fantastic in soft beach sand and snow, and for its size, it worked perfectly. I do have a few suggestions to make it even better, though: a pocket holder in the rear seat, an eyeglass holder in the roof, a larger fuel tank, better horsepower, and more than just 2 cup holders in the back and rear seating area.

This is a fantastic Jeep product! I have the manual transmission, 4X4 FDI drive model, and it drives like a dream. The engine is incredibly responsive (especially with the manual transmission), and the 4X4 performs just as well as I would expect from a Jeep. On the highway, I get an impressive 29-30 mpg, and in town, I get 23-25 mpg (although this may differ for automatic transmissions). The Freedom Drive I is an AWD/4WD drive system that detects traction loss under normal driving conditions and transfers torque to where it is needed. The 4WD system is a 50-50 system that is perfect for light off-roading. If you're a serious off-roader, then you may want to consider the FDII or even better, the Wrangler.

This is a fantastic jeep! I've owned 3 grand Cherokees in the past, but this one is my favorite. I was considering a Liberty, but the Patriot's price and mpg are so much better. It's such a smooth and enjoyable ride!

I recently purchased an optic green sport model with 4x4 and FDI. I have just broken the first 1000 miles and I am really enjoying the new updated interior with illuminated cup holders, more comfortable headrests and round chrome accent air vents. Although our adventure didn't start the way I expected from a brand new vehicle, as I had to wait 10 days for a dealership to fix an A/C line that was leaking freon that had to be ordered from the factory in Detroit. However, other than that, I must say that this is a great vehicle for its price. I absolutely love the autostick option, which is very handy when driving on mountain roads. I also find that there is not that much road noise as described by editors. The turning radius is great, making maneuvering a breeze. Even though the interior is all plastic, it is pretty durable.
