2002 Honda Passport problems
The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.
The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.
In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common 2002 Honda Passport problems
The 2002 Honda Passport, while known for its overall reliability, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Transmission failure: The automatic transmission in the 2002 Honda Passport may start acting up around 100,000 miles, struggling to go into the right gears and eventually failing to transfer power to the wheels. A transmission rebuild or replacement may be necessary to fix this problem.
- No-start issues: The 3.2L V6 engine in the 2002 Honda Passport can suffer from no-start issues at any time. When this happens, the engine won't turn over, but the accessories will still work. Replacing the battery and starter could help, but it's not a guaranteed fix. Oil leaks, including at the head gasket, can cause the engine to tick and knock, potentially leading to engine seizure if left unrepaired.
- Frame rusting: Exposed parts of the frame on the 2002 Honda Passport can become covered in road salt, leading to extensive rusting. If left unaddressed, the frame could break apart, potentially totaling the vehicle. This issue is not unique to the 2002 model, as the 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 models also experienced significant frame rusting.
- Brake problems: The 1999 Honda Passport, in particular, has been reported to have a significant number of brake problems, including extended stopping distances, faulty brake equipment, and the antilock brakes activating for no reason or not working at all. These issues have been reported to persist even after taking the vehicle in for repairs.
These common problems should be taken into consideration when purchasing a 2002 Honda Passport. While the vehicle is generally reliable, these issues can lead to costly repairs or even render the vehicle unsafe to drive if not addressed promptly.
What is the most common problem with Honda Passport?
Brake-related problems are amongst the most commonly reported 2022 Honda Passport problems. These issues can include squeaking or grinding noises, premature wear of brake pads, or brake pedal pulsation. Problems can arise due to worn brake components, contaminated brake fluid, or improper brake system maintenance.
Does Honda Passport have transmission problems?
The 55-page complaint says that the apparent defect plaguing the ZF 9HP transmission in 2016-2022 Honda Pilot, 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey, 2019-present Honda Passport and 2020-present Honda Ridgeline vehicles can produce rough and delayed shifting; loud noises during shifting; sudden, harsh accelerations and decelerations ...
How long will a Honda Passport last?
The 2021 Honda Passport lasts around 250,000 miles, with some minor transmission software and stereo system issues reported.
What is the reliability of the Honda Passport?
The 2024 Honda Passport has a predicted reliability score of 85 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1HGEM22952L
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 2002 HONDA CIVIC COMPLETE LOSS OF ENGINE POWER BRAKING GOING 15 MPH. CAUSING PROPERTY DAMAGE. THIS COMPLETE LOSS OF ENGINE FAILERE HAS BEEN REPORTED TO DEALERS AND BEEN SEEN IN MANY WEB FORUMS. THIS TIME MY SON WAS DRIVING WHEN THE ENGINE FAILERE LIGHT CAME ON AND BRAKES WENT OUT TURNING A CORNER. NO AIR BAG WAS EVER DEPLOYED WHEN HE HIT THE CURB AND SIGN WHICH SHOULD HAVE AS HE HIT A SIGN AND TREE STRIPPING THE FRONT BUMPER OFF AND CRUSHED THE RADIATOR INTO THE ENGINE. NO AIR BAGS WEAR EVER DEPLOYED. EVEN THE POLICE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THAT AND QUESTIONED IT . IT HAPPENED IN THE CITY OF HURST TEXAS. IN THESE FORUMS MANY DRIVERS HAVE EXPERIENCED LOSS OF ENGINE FAILERE AND BRAKES IN SOME CASES. HONDA JUST PUT OUT A RECALL ON 1998-2000 FOR THE ENGINE IGNITION SWITCH SHORTING OUT CAUSING ENGINE FAILERE. I SUGGEST THEY INCREASE THAT RECALL TO 2002 POSSIBLY. ALSO I READ WHERE THE ELECTRICAL LOAD DETECTOR IS GETTING WET AND SHORTING OUT CAUSING THE SAME THING IN SOME CARS. IN ONE CASE I READ THAT THE VACUMM HOSE TO THE BRAKE BOOSTER MAY BE BAD. PUMPING THE BRAKES CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STALL. SO ANY CASE I THINK HONDA HAS A SAFETY ISSUE WITH ENGINES STALLING WHILE CONSUMERS ARE DRIVING. MY SON WAS LUCKY HE WAS ONLY DRIVING 15 MPH WHEN IT HAPPENED . IF HE WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY IT COULD HAVE BEEN A LOSS OF LIFE. THE VEHICALE IS IN THE BODY SHOP GETTING FIXED AND AFTER THAT WILL BE DRIVEN TO HONDA FOR AN ENGINE CHECK. I HOPE THE COMPUTER CODES TELL US SOMETHING BUT I THINK HONDA NEEDS TO RESEARCH THIS CLOSLY.

What a fantastic work of craftsmanship! Great car!

My white Passport has been a great car since I purchased it in December. It has lots of power, luxury, and rugged good looks. I also considered the Isuzu Rodeo (which is the same car), but ultimately chose the Passport because of my positive experience with the dealer. Overall, I would rate this car a perfect 10!

This has been an excellent vehicle for you and has provided good transportation through a heavy snow season. The 4-wheel drive on the fly performed well and was easy to use by just pushing the button. You have not experienced any major mechanical problems. We are thrilled to hear that you are a satisfied customer!

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your silver 2001 LX model! It's great to hear that you haven't had any problems with it in the 18 months you've had it. When you mentioned that the ride was a little squishy, I was worried, but it's great to hear that it was an easy fix with just a little bit of air in the tires. It sounds like you've really put your SUV to the test, camping with it, driving it around town, and even loading it up with lumber! And I have to agree, it looks great too! I'm not sure why Edmunds has been so critical of this SUV, but it's clear that you've had a great experience with it. Thanks for sharing!

This car has made me frustrated on numerous occasions. On two different occasions, it randomly shut off while I was making a turn. I had to get the transmission fixed because it was leaking fluid. The SUV doesn't use oil properly. This thing has just left a bad taste in my mouth, but I'm so glad I just sold it. Hopefully, I'll get my reliable Toyota 4Runner for Christmas.

I strongly advise against purchasing ANY Passports. Despite having the key slot jamming issue fixed by the dealer, the power window has failed to work over 50 times, even on days as mild as 50 degrees F. Additionally, the gas mileage is only around 13 to 14 miles per gallon.
Grover Crona 2024-08-16
I recently purchased a vehicle, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing a rough ride. I can feel every bump in the road, and one time, when I went over some railroad tracks, I was concerned that the car might fall apart. I went back to the dealership to discuss my concerns, but they informed me that the ride is supposed to be that way. They did offer to exchange the vehicle for another one, but at a cost of $8,000, which I found disappointing. Overall, I am dissatisfied with my experience and do not plan to purchase a Honda again.
Justen Volkman 2024-06-26
Honda's decision to market the Isuzu Rodeo under their own brand was a misstep that unfortunately damaged their reputation. As a loyal Honda customer, I had high expectations when I purchased my Passport (which is essentially an Isuzu Rodeo), but was disappointed to discover its lack of reliability and uncomfortable ride. Despite this setback, Honda remains a reputable brand with many other reliable models to choose from.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to address a few issues that you may have encountered with your vehicle. It seems that the engine oil consumption may be a bit of a problem, as you may need to add or get a complete oil change every 2 and a half months. Additionally, the brakes and drive belt can be a bit costly and difficult to fix. You may have also noticed that the CD player has a tendency to eat CDs, which can be frustrating. Lastly, the location of the fuse system can be a bit aggravating to work on, and the spare tire and crane can be a bit of a pain in the neck. I hope this information helps, and please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns!
