1998 Buick Park avenue problems
The Buick Park Avenue is a full-size car built by Buick. The nameplate was first used in 1975 for an appearance option package on the Electra 225 Limited. It became an Electra trim level in 1978 and its own model starting in the 1991 model year after the Electra was discontinued.
There were two generations of the Park Avenue that were manufactured in the United States until 2005. In 2007, the nameplate was revived on a large Buick sedan built by Shanghai GM for the Chinese market based on the Holden Caprice from the WM/WN range. The nameplate is derived from the affluent New York City boulevard, Park Avenue.
Electra Park Avenue (1975–1990)
1975-1976
Park Avenue first appeared as an appearance package on the 1975 Buick Electra Limited. It included similar seats to the Cadillac Sixty Special, optional full center console, Buick 455ci V8, posi-traction, 15-inch rallye sport wheels, rear automatic leveling, optional leather, optional Air Cushion Restraint System, remote mirror with thermometer, and automatic climate control. The 1976 cars were largely the same except for some styling revisions and added emissions systems.
1977-1984
Park Avenue, previously an appearance option package, became an official trim level on the Electra in 1978. Cosmetically, a different grille and redesigned tail lights were the only notable cosmetic changes that year but 1979 brought a redesigned, flat front end and a subtly different taillight treatment featuring a Buick crest and bisecting horizontal silver line. A more extensive redesign occurred for the 1980 model year.
1985-1990
Park Avenue remained the top trim on the Buick Electra, it was redesigned along with the rest of the Electra line, moving to the heavily downsized front wheel drive GM C-Body. It featured a Buick 3800 V6. The coupe version was discontinued in 1987. For 1989, Buick introduced the Park Avenue Ultra trim level. The Ultra was an upgrade to the Electra Park Avenue trim and featured a standard leather interior with dual 20-way power front seats designed and manufactured by Lear Siegler and styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign; lower-body accent exterior paint treatment; distinctive thick-padded french-seamed vinyl top with limousine-style rear-window surround (available only on Ultra); simulated burled elm trim on the doors and instrument panel; unique aluminum wheels; anti-lock brakes; chromed B-pillar moldings; specific grille and tail lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel; electronic instrumentation; padded glove-compartment door and unique interior door panel trim. The Park Avenue Ultra carried a higher base price than Cadillac's Sedan de Ville. The Park Avenue Ultra did not gain much popular recognition, however, until the following generation of Park Avenue where the "Ultra" badge offered even more features.

1998 Buick Park avenue recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1998 Buick Park avenue.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3800 V6 (L36) ENGINES AND CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, THE REGULATORS HAVE A MUCH HIGHER THAN USUAL RATE OF FUEL LEAKS. A LEAK CAN ALLOW FUEL TO ENTER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD THROUGH A VACUUM LINE. IF THE ENGINE DOES NOT START WHEN CRANKED, THE FUEL FROM THE LEAKING REGULATOR AND A MISTIMED SPARK CAN CAUSE A BACKFIRE.
- Consequence: THE BACKFIRE CAN RUPTURE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE RUPTURE OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CAN DISPLACE A FUEL LINE, PULLING AN INJECTOR OUT OF PLACE, AND CAUSING A FUEL LEAK AND POSSIBLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS WITH IMPROVED DIAPHRAGMS. THE RECALL WILL BE CONDUCTED IN PHASED MAILINGS. PHASE 1 BEGAN ON JUNE 30, 2004, AND PHASE 2 BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:WEBBING
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE FRONT SEAT SHOULDER BELTS THAT MAY TWIST, ALLOWING THE WEBBING TO BECOME JAMMED IN THE RETRACTOR.
- Consequence: WHEN THE SHOULDER BELT WEBBING BECOMES JAMMED IN THE RETRACTOR, THE BELT MAY BE UNUSABLE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR THE PRESENCE OF UPDATED FRONT SHOULDER BELT BEZELS AND WHERE NECESSARY, INSTALL NEW FRONT SEAT SHOULDER BELT OPENING BEZEL KITS.

I bought this car because I wanted a big luxury car that could fit my wife and all 4 of my kids if necessary. It's great for cruising on interstates and handles curvy roads pretty well too. The car is very spacious and comfortable, with a large trunk. Surprisingly, it also gets great gas mileage, around 27-30 on the highway. It has served me well as a luxury car for business driving, as well as for family trips. The car is reliable with no mechanical or engine problems, and gets good gas mileage for its size.

It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! It sounds like it's been a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to drive, with excellent mileage and performance.
-
This is actually the fourth Park Ave. that I have owned! I have already driven 145,000 miles on this car and I am currently shopping for another one just like it. It is such a sporty and comfortable car, and I have only experienced a few minor problems in the four years that I have owned it. Therefore, I would highly recommend a Park Avenue Ultra to any consumer who is looking for ultimate comfort, reliability, and styling.
-
I remember buying my first Buick Ultra back in 1992 and driving it for five years until it was unfortunately involved in an accident. Despite the setback, I couldn't bear to part with it because I loved the body style so much. The Ultra I have now is just as fantastic as the previous one, and I make sure to keep up with all the maintenance to ensure it stays that way. In my experience, owning a Buick Ultra has been a pleasure, and I can't imagine driving anything else. If and when I decide to purchase another vehicle, I'm almost certain it will be another Buick Ultra.

Hello! This is a great car! It's large, comfortable, and powerful. It has very good serviceability, although the belts could be improved. It has excellent reliability, having gone 143,000 miles without any major issues.

Although this car has had its fair share of issues, the transmission and radiator have been reliable. Some components have been replaced multiple times, but the car has been well-maintained. There have been some leaks and issues with the headlights, alternators, steering pumps, fuel pumps, fuel senders, plastic intake manifold, water pump, dash relays, and air conditioning controls. Unfortunately, the rear defogger is currently not working and the fuel gauge is out again. Overall, it may not be the best option even if it's offered for free.
Candido McGlynn 2024-10-22
The car has a sleek design, but unfortunately, GM has not taken responsibility for the damage caused by plastic intake manifolds in the 3800 engines. The class action lawsuit only offers a small compensation of $50, which is insufficient unless the entire engine is replaced. This has led to many customers choosing other brands. Despite these issues, the car has good fuel efficiency, getting 30-40 mpg on the highway. It has also undergone several repairs, including the alternator, battery, power steering pump, transmission parts, warped rotors, intake manifold, and intake manifold gaskets, which have unfortunately started leaking again for the third time. The ashtray and passenger seat controls have been replaced, and the wipers have been erratic. The car has also had problems with rough upshifts, but the dealer has been unable to identify any issues. Additionally, the rear air shocks and front strut mounts are in need of replacement, and the serpentine belt required the engine mount to be pulled. Overall, it is a nice ride.

If you own a '97 Park Avenue that is approaching 75,000 miles, please be aware of some potential issues. I purchased mine new and opted for an extended warranty, but unfortunately, after the warranty expired, I experienced some problems such as cracking paint, malfunctioning cruise control, broken door handles and window switches, and a faulty gas gauge. I reached out to Pitre Buick before the warranty expired, but unfortunately, I did not receive the assistance I was hoping for. When I contacted Buick directly, they were unable to offer any help and suggested that I purchase a new car. It's important to keep these issues in mind when considering a Park Avenue with high mileage. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

For those seeking a reliable and trouble-free driving experience, I would recommend considering other options. While I have a fondness for these larger vehicles and have been driving them for 30 years, my recent experience with this particular model has been less than satisfactory. Despite regular maintenance, I encountered several issues, including significant engine work, starter failure, and electrical problems with the transmission. Additionally, the CD player has not functioned since 1998. It is my opinion that potential buyers should be aware of the potential for large repair bills, particularly in the early stages of ownership, and should consider alternative options such as the Avalon, Saab, or older Lexus or Q-series Infiniti. It is important to note that the Gran Touring suspension may mitigate some of these issues, but I cannot personally recommend this vehicle based on my experience.

The issues experienced by others were also present in my vehicle. The engine was found to be damaged due to a mixture of melted oil and anti-freeze. Upon replacing the engine, it was discovered that the motor sensors had been snapped and glued back on. Additionally, the paint on the trunk is peeling and spreading, and the bug shield on the hood is peeling due to the plastic wrap. The sunroof is also warped and closes 1/4
