1999 Buick Park avenue problems
The Buick Park Avenue is a full-size car built by Buick. The nameplate was first used in 1975 for an appearance option package on the Electra 225 Limited. It became an Electra trim level in 1978 and its own model starting in the 1991 model year after the Electra was discontinued.
There were two generations of the Park Avenue that were manufactured in the United States until 2005. In 2007, the nameplate was revived on a large Buick sedan built by Shanghai GM for the Chinese market based on the Holden Caprice from the WM/WN range. The nameplate is derived from the affluent New York City boulevard, Park Avenue.
Electra Park Avenue (1975–1990)
1975-1976
Park Avenue first appeared as an appearance package on the 1975 Buick Electra Limited. It included similar seats to the Cadillac Sixty Special, optional full center console, Buick 455ci V8, posi-traction, 15-inch rallye sport wheels, rear automatic leveling, optional leather, optional Air Cushion Restraint System, remote mirror with thermometer, and automatic climate control. The 1976 cars were largely the same except for some styling revisions and added emissions systems.
1977-1984
Park Avenue, previously an appearance option package, became an official trim level on the Electra in 1978. Cosmetically, a different grille and redesigned tail lights were the only notable cosmetic changes that year but 1979 brought a redesigned, flat front end and a subtly different taillight treatment featuring a Buick crest and bisecting horizontal silver line. A more extensive redesign occurred for the 1980 model year.
1985-1990
Park Avenue remained the top trim on the Buick Electra, it was redesigned along with the rest of the Electra line, moving to the heavily downsized front wheel drive GM C-Body. It featured a Buick 3800 V6. The coupe version was discontinued in 1987. For 1989, Buick introduced the Park Avenue Ultra trim level. The Ultra was an upgrade to the Electra Park Avenue trim and featured a standard leather interior with dual 20-way power front seats designed and manufactured by Lear Siegler and styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign; lower-body accent exterior paint treatment; distinctive thick-padded french-seamed vinyl top with limousine-style rear-window surround (available only on Ultra); simulated burled elm trim on the doors and instrument panel; unique aluminum wheels; anti-lock brakes; chromed B-pillar moldings; specific grille and tail lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel; electronic instrumentation; padded glove-compartment door and unique interior door panel trim. The Park Avenue Ultra carried a higher base price than Cadillac's Sedan de Ville. The Park Avenue Ultra did not gain much popular recognition, however, until the following generation of Park Avenue where the "Ultra" badge offered even more features.

Common 1999 Buick Park avenue problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1999 Buick Park Avenue, several common problems have been identified:
- Unstable Handling on Rough Roads: Some owners experienced instability while driving on rough roads, particularly in areas with poor road conditions like NYC and NJ. The car felt unstable, especially when encountering bumps or turning on uneven surfaces, leading to concerns about control and safety.
- Defective Gas Gauge: Buick Park Avenue models, including the 1999 version, have been reported to have issues with the gas gauge. Owners noted that the gauge malfunctions when the fuel level drops below half, sticking in place or bouncing, causing uncertainty about the actual fuel level in the tank.
- Starting Issues: Some owners faced difficulties starting their 1999 Buick Park Avenue intermittently. Despite having a new battery and a relatively recent alternator, the car would crank repeatedly before eventually starting, leading to frustration and uncertainty about the root cause. Suggestions ranged from issues with the starter, ignition switch, fuel filter, to a potentially failing fuel pump.
- Soft Rear End: After replacing the front struts, some owners noticed that the rear end of the car felt soft. This softness in the rear end was attributed to a failing air pump, which was challenging to locate for repair, impacting the handling and overall driving experience.
These common problems reported by owners of the 1999 Buick Park Avenue highlight various issues ranging from mechanical noises and handling concerns to fuel gauge inaccuracies and starting difficulties. Addressing these issues promptly and accurately is crucial to maintaining the performance, safety, and reliability of the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-12-26
- VIN: 1G4CU5217X4
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE. I OWN A 99 BUICK PARK AVENUE ULTRA THAT HAS ABOUT 65,000 MILES ON IT AND IS WELL MAINTAINED. THE CAR IS ONLY UTILIZED ABOUT 6 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR SINCE WE ARE SNOW BIRDS HAVING RETURNED FROM THE EAST 2 MONTHS AGO. LAST EVENING AS I DROVE NORTH AND UP ONE OF THE LONG HILLS ON THE TOLL RD 73 IN ORANGE COUNTY, CA I EXPERIENCED THE SUDDEN AND TOTAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER WHILE TRAVELING BETWEEN 65 AND 70 MPH. ALL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS, HEADLIGHTS, DASH LIGHTS ETC STAYED ON AND APPEARED NORMAL. FORTUNATELY THE TRAFFIC WAS SUCH THAT I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, STOP AND TURN ON MY HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS. I SAT FOR A MOMENT AND THEN TRIED TO RESTART THE ENGINE. THE CRANKING APPEARED NORMAL AND THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY STARTED AND THE ENGINE PARAMETERS, TEMPERATURE, VOLTS, ETC APPEARED NORMAL. I WAS SURPRISED TO SAY LEAST BUT WE DECIDED TO START MOVING AGAIN AND PROCEEDED TO DRIVE PRETTY MUCH AT NORMAL SPEEDS WITHOUT A HICCUP THE 20 MILES LEFT TO GET HOME STAYING IN THE RH LANES FOR THE MOST PART. GETTING BACK INTO THE FAST MOVING STREAM OF TRAFFIC WAS SOMEWHAT HAZARDOUS IN AND OF ITSELF. PRIOR TO THIS SUDDEN FAILURE THERE WAS NO WARNING OR CHANGE IN PERFORMANCE. THE ONLY CAVEAT TO THAT IS THAT IT SEEMS LATELY THERE HAS BEEN A MINOR BUT NOTICEABLE SAG OR HESITATION WHEN STARTING TO ACCELERATE WHILE IN DRIVE AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. *TR
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

- VIN: 1G4CW52K6X4

THE ENGINE WAS RACING. I TRIED EVERYTHING TO AVOID OTHER TRAFFIC AND STOP OR SLOW DOWN THE CAR WHILE TURNING THE AUTO TO THE ADJACENT LANE. THIS INCLUDES SHIFTING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION TO NEUTRAL AND PARK, APPLYING BRAKES, APPLYING EMERGENCY BRAKES AND FINALLY SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE. THE AUTO MOVED TO THE RIGHT LANE AND FINALLY CAME TO A STOP WITH LITTLE CONTROL OF STEERING. I WAITED FOR A FEW MINUTES AND STARTED THE ENGINE AGAIN AND SHIFTED INTO FIRST GEAR TO GET AWAY FROM TRAFFIC. AUTO STARTED UP AGAIN BUT ENGINE NO LONGER RACED. I SHIFTED INTO THIRD AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME SAFELY ABOUT 6 MILES AWAY IN A NORMAL MANNER.ITS BEEN A GREAT CAR, AND THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. *JS

THE NEXT DAY I COULD NOT START MY CAR, THE BATTERY WAS COMPLETELY DEAD. I WAS LATE FOR AN IMPORTANT MEETING. LATER I FOUND OUT THAT WHEN THE ENGINE IS OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION, ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CAR CONTINUED TO BURN, AND THAT WAS THE CAUSE BATTERY DISCHARGE. I STARTED RESEARCHING MY PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THAT MANY PEOPLE FACED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. YOU CAN CHECK GOOGLE ASKING 'SIGNAL FLASHER PROBLEM BUICK PARK AVENUE 1999' , 'LEFT TURN ALWAYS ON BUICK PARK AVENUE 1999' ETC. ACCORDING MY ESTIMATION, AT LEAST THOUSAND PEOPLE MET THIS PROBLEM THE CULPRIT IS 'TURN SIGNAL HAZARD FLASHER UNIT'. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THIS UNIT HAS A BUILT FACTORY DEFECTS AND IT IS DANGEROUS, THIS UNIT UNNECESSARILY MISLEADS OTHER DRIVERS, AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HAZARD FLASHING. I BELIEVE THAT GM SHOULD REPLACE THIS UNIT AT ALL BUICK PARK AVENUE 1997-2005. FACTORY DEFECT IS OBVIOUS AND THE BUYER DOES NOT HAVE TO SUFFER BECAUSE OF THE SHORTCOMINGS OF ENGINEERS. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-10-24
- VIN: 1G4CW52K0X4
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: PLASTIC INTAKE MANIFOLD FAILURE OCCURRED ON 1999 BUICK PARK AVENUE WITH APPROXIMATELY 45,000 MILES. COOLANT LEAKED INTO THE ENGINE AND RESULTED IN A MISFIRE CODE IN MULTIPLE CYLINDERS. SYMPTOMS EXPERIENCED BY THE DRIVER WERE A ROUGH IDLE AT START FOR 30 SECONDS, AND THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT WOULD COME ON, SOMETIMES STAYING ON AND SOMETIMES EXTINGUISHING AFTER 15 SECONDS. THE CAR WAS IMMEDIATELY DRIVEN FOR SERVICE. THE DEALER INITIALLY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A COMBINATION OF DIRTY FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM (CLEANED REGULARLY, BUT STILL NEEDED TO BE CLEANED AGAIN TO CONVINCE DEALER TO RULE OUT THIS PROBLEM). WHEN PROBLEM PERSISTED IN CYLINDER #6, THE PROBLEM WAS THEN DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY FUEL INJECTOR WHICH WAS REPLACED. WHEN THE PROBLEM PERSISTED, IT WAS NOTICED THAT COOLANT HAD GOTTEN INTO CYLINDER #6 IN SMALL AMOUNTS AND CAUSE A MISFIRE. DEALER THEN DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS THE PLASTIC INTAKE MANIFOLD. WEB SEARCHING REVEALS THAT THIS IS A CHRONIC PROBLEM AS THE DESIGN WAS CHANGED FROM METAL TO PLASTIC. HOWEVER, THERE ARE NO CURRENT RECALLS ON THIS ISSUE. COST TO REPAIR IS APPROXIMATELY $1,700. *TR

1999 Buick Park avenue recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1999 Buick Park avenue.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3800 V6 (L36) ENGINES AND CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, THE REGULATORS HAVE A MUCH HIGHER THAN USUAL RATE OF FUEL LEAKS. A LEAK CAN ALLOW FUEL TO ENTER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD THROUGH A VACUUM LINE. IF THE ENGINE DOES NOT START WHEN CRANKED, THE FUEL FROM THE LEAKING REGULATOR AND A MISTIMED SPARK CAN CAUSE A BACKFIRE.
- Consequence: THE BACKFIRE CAN RUPTURE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE RUPTURE OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CAN DISPLACE A FUEL LINE, PULLING AN INJECTOR OUT OF PLACE, AND CAUSING A FUEL LEAK AND POSSIBLE FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS WITH IMPROVED DIAPHRAGMS. THE RECALL WILL BE CONDUCTED IN PHASED MAILINGS. PHASE 1 BEGAN ON JUNE 30, 2004, AND PHASE 2 BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE BRAKE BOOSTER TO PEDAL ASSEMBLY ATTACHMENT NUTS MAY BE LOOSE.
- Consequence: IF THESE NUTS ARE LOOSE, THE BRAKE PEDAL MAY BE LOW, THE ASSEMBLY MAY BE LOOSE, THE BRAKES MAY NOT RELEASE, AND IF THE NUTS BACK COMPLETELY OFF, BRAKING MAY BE LOST. ALSO FUME AND WATER INTRUSION TO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT CAN OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MISSING BRAKE BOOSTER TO BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY NUTS AND TIGHTEN ALL FOUR (4) NUTS TO SPECIFIED TORQUE.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH INCORRECT FRONT BRAKE ROTOR, BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY, BRAKE PADS, AND CALIPER MOUNTING BRACKET ON EITHER THE LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE.
- Consequence: A VEHICLE WITH THIS CONDITION CAN PULL TO ONE SIDE DURING A BRAKING MANEUVER. IN ADDITION, VEHICLE STOPPING DISTANCE COULD BE INCREASED.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT FOR CORRECT BRAKE PARTS AND REPLACE ANY INCORRECT ROTORS, CALIPER ASSEMBLIES, BRAKE PADS, AND CALIPER MOUNTING BRACKETS.

Got 33.9 mpg on the interstate and 21.8 mpg in town. The ride is incredibly smooth, it feels like I'm sitting in my living room. I haven't had any problems with it, and it's definitely the best car I've ever owned.
-
Excellent service! The vehicle is comfortable for five passengers and has excellent gas mileage.
-
This car is great! It has gobs of torque off the line and a comfy interior. Although the engine is a bit coarse compared to Japanese makes, it's not offensive. I did have to repair the seat motors on both front seats, which cost me $1400.00, but overall it's a very quiet car and drives very nicely. I especially like the Heads up display and the tire pressure monitor, which I'm sure saved my tire after I found a nail by letting me know before it went flat and driving on it. These are great safety features. I do wish it had Stabilitrack and side airbags, but the huge trunk is a major plus. I really, really love the Concert III sound system - it really rocks! The only downside is that I can't select CD from the steering wheel, but I can select am/fm. If you buy this car, you'll be happy!

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your third Park Avenue! It's great to hear that it gets good gas mileage and handles well. Just a heads up, it does require premium fuel. It's wonderful to hear that you've had few maintenance problems. I understand that you're planning to trade it in for a new 2005 Park Avenue Ultra since GM is discontinuing the model. It's always tough to say goodbye to a car you love, but I'm sure the new one will be just as great and serve you well for many years to come. The Park Avenue Ultra is truly a fantastic car, and it's a shame to see it go. Best of luck with your new purchase!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Park Avenue! It sounds like it has all the features you need for a comfortable ride, especially on long trips. It's great to hear that you've been able to put so many miles on it without any major issues. Even the small glitch with the electronic odometer doesn't seem to have dampened your enthusiasm. And it's fantastic that you're getting such good gas mileage, well over 30 mpg on the highway. It's also reassuring to hear that the car handles so well on curves and hills at high speeds. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This car has had several issues with its windows, air conditioning, heating, sunroof, auto seat, and transmission. Despite being under factory warranty, I had to fight to get these issues fixed, and even then, they were not resolved properly. The mechanic has identified a transmission problem, but the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge it. As a top-of-the-line car, this is unacceptable. However, I have decided to trade it in for an import. While I want to support American labor, I cannot compromise on quality.

I recently purchased this car for my wife and it has proven to be a great choice. Despite its reputation as a more traditional vehicle, we were able to find one with low mileage and well below market value. We were primarily drawn to the car's overall value, and it has not disappointed. While it is true that these cars can depreciate quickly, we were able to take advantage of this and get a great deal.
