Buick Park avenue problems

buick logo

The Buick Park Avenue is a full-size car built by Buick. The nameplate was first used in 1975 for an appearance option package on the Electra 225 Limited. It became an Electra trim level in 1978 and its own model starting in the 1991 model year after the Electra was discontinued.

There were two generations of the Park Avenue that were manufactured in the United States until 2005. In 2007, the nameplate was revived on a large Buick sedan built by Shanghai GM for the Chinese market based on the Holden Caprice from the WM/WN range. The nameplate is derived from the affluent New York City boulevard, Park Avenue.

Electra Park Avenue (1975–1990)

1975-1976

Park Avenue first appeared as an appearance package on the 1975 Buick Electra Limited. It included similar seats to the Cadillac Sixty Special, optional full center console, Buick 455ci V8, posi-traction, 15-inch rallye sport wheels, rear automatic leveling, optional leather, optional Air Cushion Restraint System, remote mirror with thermometer, and automatic climate control. The 1976 cars were largely the same except for some styling revisions and added emissions systems.

1977-1984

Park Avenue, previously an appearance option package, became an official trim level on the Electra in 1978. Cosmetically, a different grille and redesigned tail lights were the only notable cosmetic changes that year but 1979 brought a redesigned, flat front end and a subtly different taillight treatment featuring a Buick crest and bisecting horizontal silver line. A more extensive redesign occurred for the 1980 model year.

1985-1990

Park Avenue remained the top trim on the Buick Electra, it was redesigned along with the rest of the Electra line, moving to the heavily downsized front wheel drive GM C-Body. It featured a Buick 3800 V6. The coupe version was discontinued in 1987. For 1989, Buick introduced the Park Avenue Ultra trim level. The Ultra was an upgrade to the Electra Park Avenue trim and featured a standard leather interior with dual 20-way power front seats designed and manufactured by Lear Siegler and styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign; lower-body accent exterior paint treatment; distinctive thick-padded french-seamed vinyl top with limousine-style rear-window surround (available only on Ultra); simulated burled elm trim on the doors and instrument panel; unique aluminum wheels; anti-lock brakes; chromed B-pillar moldings; specific grille and tail lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel; electronic instrumentation; padded glove-compartment door and unique interior door panel trim. The Park Avenue Ultra carried a higher base price than Cadillac's Sedan de Ville. The Park Avenue Ultra did not gain much popular recognition, however, until the following generation of Park Avenue where the "Ultra" badge offered even more features.

Latest negative Buick Park avenue car reviews

  1. Marvin Tillman 2025-04-17

    Vehicle year: 2004

I traded a 1998 Park Avenue, which I loved. However, I have been very disappointed with this 2003. The ride is extremely rough and the vibration is terrible. My dealer has replaced all four tires, which has improved the drive a little bit, but it still does not have the smooth ride that my old one had. Unfortunately, I am looking to trade and it probably will not be for another Buick!

  2. Caleb Hansen 2025-04-13

    Vehicle year: 1992

This car is mechanically sound. However, I am disappointed to say that the front seats are very uncomfortable. If I had known about the seat construction, I would not have purchased the car. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there is no support under the seat other than some wire stretched across two pipes and a thin piece of foam placed on top of the wires. The same goes for the back of the seat as well.

  3. Lew Koss 2025-04-02

    Vehicle year: 1997

We went from an S-class Mercedes to this car and we find it much roomier, more comfortable, and far better on gas (28-29 mpg highway driving.)

  4. Hiram Olson 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 1996

Firstly, if you're searching for a stylish and sporty car, this may not be the best option for you. However, if you're looking for an affordable car to drive primarily on weekends, run errands, and take your furry friend along, then this car is definitely worth considering. I purchased mine for $4400, including tax, with 104K miles on it. The previous owner was an older gentleman, so the car was in great condition. It has decent fuel efficiency (low 20s), incredibly comfortable seats and ride, a smooth and powerful engine, and power features galore. It has been very reliable and all for a very reasonable price.

  5. Foster Cole 2025-03-19

    Vehicle year: 1998

I recently purchased this car from a friend who took great care of it. It looks brand new both inside and out. Unfortunately, within two months of owning it, I experienced a few issues. The door lock button popped inside the door, the transmission failed and cost $1975 to rebuild, the ash tray broke and won't stay closed, and the volume button on the steering wheel only functions some of the time. Additionally, the self-leveling feature has failed and I am concerned about the cost to fix it. Overall, this car has the potential to be wonderful if it was better built. As someone who has owned many GM cars over the years (including my beloved 84 El Camino), I am disappointed that this will be my last one.

Although there was one minor issue in the 1st year, it's fantastic that it was fixed by the dealership with just one visit. The ride is very smooth, which must make driving a pleasure. It's a shame to hear about the weak front door lock plastic button bracket, but it's great that you were able to replace it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I recently purchased the P.A.Ultra with touring package (used) after owning a similar older Park Ave, which I grew to love. I must say, this car is an absolute dream! The fuel injection gives it amazing power and the touring package makes handling very tight and responsive. It truly is a TOTAL driving experience with a great sound system, luxurious comfort including walnut interior trim, leather seats, power everything, sunroof, and more. This car is a testament to what American engineering can produce when it wants to. I truly hope that the new model Buicks can carry on this fine tradition, but I must admit, I would be surprised. This is a real car!

Driving our 2003 Buick Park Avenue is an absolute pleasure. We have a full view of our surroundings when maneuvering in traffic, thanks to the lack of blind spots. Even on bumpy roads, we enjoy a comfortable ride. In comparison, our Lexus has a blind spot and we feel every bump, so we truly appreciate the smooth ride of our Buick. The body integrity is top-notch, as there are no rattles. Currently, we are facing an issue with a damaged rim and the dealer is having trouble getting replacements. Despite this, we still believe that this car is fantastic and we hope that Buick brings back the Park Avenue.

The Buick Park Avenue is undoubtedly one of the most elegantly designed large American luxury cars. Its beautiful curved lines and understated features make it a rolling sculpture that could have been created by Jaguar or Italian experts. In contrast, modern Cadillacs have lost the concept of the big American luxury-liner by trying to compete with German luxury/performance brands, resulting in ugly, boxy styling with hard angular lines. However, Buick has nailed it down right in every category with the Park Avenue. This car is a true American luxury-liner that offers a big floating ride and lush comfort, which is what truly great American luxury cars are all about. The large V6 engine, although a dated pushrod design, supplies ample torque around town and decent highway cruising, making it powerful enough to get you around in style. The trunk is cavernous and can hold major groceries, while passengers can totally relax in the big bench seats like a limo. The stereo is adequate, but aftermarket upgrades can significantly improve the quality. The Buick Park Avenue is a bygone masterpiece of cruising on the open sea that is now basically extinct, which is a crying shame. If you want total old-fashioned American luxury and don't care about racing with Euro cars, then the Park Avenue is the perfect choice. However, it is important to note that this car is not without its problems. The Park Avenue is a reliable car with a smooth 4-speed transmission that gets the job done. While some components, such as the intake manifold, may require repairs over time, this is to be expected with any vehicle of its age. It is important to note that aggressive driving can accelerate wear and tear on the car. Additionally, it is recommended to avoid the Ultra models with a supercharger, as they are not optimized for the old school motor design. Overall, the Park Avenue is a classic piece of Americana that may not be suitable for everyone, but is a great choice for those who appreciate its unique charm and reliability.

You're so lucky! Your neighbor had this car sitting in his garage for almost six years and sold it to you for only $850 cash. It's in pristine condition with only 92000 original miles. You replaced the fuel filter and put on new tires, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. You've done typical maintenance stuff like new brakes and a new battery, but overall, this Buick has been a dream to drive. In fact, you've owned three Buicks in your life and all three have been reliable and comfortable vehicles. It's hard to beat Buick when it comes to American passenger cars, dollar for dollar!
