2001 Buick Park avenue problems

buick logo

The Buick Park Avenue is a full-size car built by Buick. The nameplate was first used in 1975 for an appearance option package on the Electra 225 Limited. It became an Electra trim level in 1978 and its own model starting in the 1991 model year after the Electra was discontinued.

There were two generations of the Park Avenue that were manufactured in the United States until 2005. In 2007, the nameplate was revived on a large Buick sedan built by Shanghai GM for the Chinese market based on the Holden Caprice from the WM/WN range. The nameplate is derived from the affluent New York City boulevard, Park Avenue.

Electra Park Avenue (1975–1990)

1975-1976

Park Avenue first appeared as an appearance package on the 1975 Buick Electra Limited. It included similar seats to the Cadillac Sixty Special, optional full center console, Buick 455ci V8, posi-traction, 15-inch rallye sport wheels, rear automatic leveling, optional leather, optional Air Cushion Restraint System, remote mirror with thermometer, and automatic climate control. The 1976 cars were largely the same except for some styling revisions and added emissions systems.

1977-1984

Park Avenue, previously an appearance option package, became an official trim level on the Electra in 1978. Cosmetically, a different grille and redesigned tail lights were the only notable cosmetic changes that year but 1979 brought a redesigned, flat front end and a subtly different taillight treatment featuring a Buick crest and bisecting horizontal silver line. A more extensive redesign occurred for the 1980 model year.

1985-1990

Park Avenue remained the top trim on the Buick Electra, it was redesigned along with the rest of the Electra line, moving to the heavily downsized front wheel drive GM C-Body. It featured a Buick 3800 V6. The coupe version was discontinued in 1987. For 1989, Buick introduced the Park Avenue Ultra trim level. The Ultra was an upgrade to the Electra Park Avenue trim and featured a standard leather interior with dual 20-way power front seats designed and manufactured by Lear Siegler and styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign; lower-body accent exterior paint treatment; distinctive thick-padded french-seamed vinyl top with limousine-style rear-window surround (available only on Ultra); simulated burled elm trim on the doors and instrument panel; unique aluminum wheels; anti-lock brakes; chromed B-pillar moldings; specific grille and tail lamps; leather-wrapped steering wheel; electronic instrumentation; padded glove-compartment door and unique interior door panel trim. The Park Avenue Ultra carried a higher base price than Cadillac's Sedan de Ville. The Park Avenue Ultra did not gain much popular recognition, however, until the following generation of Park Avenue where the "Ultra" badge offered even more features.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-19
  • VIN: 1G4CW54KX14
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: A 2001 BUICK PARK AVENUE WAS PURCHASED ON APRIL 27, 2014. IT RAN GOOD UNTIL SEPTEMBER 19, 2014. ON THAT DAY MY SON WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE. SUDDENLY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER ON A SIDE ROAD. HE WAS ABLE TO START IT AFTER HAVING TO PULL OVER WITH NO LIGHTS, POWER BRAKES OR STEERING. I TOOK IT FOR A TEST RIDE AND IT DID THE SAME THING. WE GOT IT HOME AND FAILED TO REPAIR IT BY OURSELVES. WE TOOK IT TO A REPAIR GARAGE AND THEY SAID THE PROBLEM WAS THE MAF SENSOR. THE TECHNICIAN SHOWED ME HOW TO TAP ON THE ENCLOSURE (WITH A SCREWDRIVER) WHICH HOUSED THE PART AND THE ENGINE WOULD SPUTTER AND MISS. AFTER INSTALLING A NEW MAF SENSOR IT NOW RUNS FINE. WE LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE HISTORY AND IT NEEDED A NEW MAF SENSOR TWO OTHER TIMES. ONCE AT 9/2013 AND ANOTHER AT 6/2012. IT IS SURPRISING AND SHOCKING THAT THE FAILURE OF THIS PART CAUSES THE ENTIRE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN, CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION. A BRAND NEW MAF SENSOR FROM THE BUICK DEALER COSTS $430 WHICH IS OBVIOUSLY GEARED TOWARDS SELLING TO REPAIR SHOPS VS. DO IT YOURSELF MECHANICS. THIS RIDICULOUS HIGH PRICE HAS CREATED A MARKET FOR CHEAPER MAF SENSORS WHICH MAY OR MAY NOT BE OEM PARTS. THE PART REMOVED WAS A DELPHI SENSOR WHICH ONLY LASTED ONE YEAR. GM HAS GOT TO COME UP WITH A SOLUTION TO THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY PROBLEM. IT IS PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK. SIMPLY BUYING AN AUTHENTIC GM PART IS NOT ENOUGH BECAUSE IT STILL EVENTUALLY FAILS AND THE CAR TOTALLY SHUTS DOWN, WHICH IS UNACCEPTABLE. A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET REVEALS OTHERS WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. *TR

  • Summary: DRIVING DOWN THE EXPRESSWAY, THE CAR JUST SHUT OFF. MY DAUGHTER WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT WRECKING (LUCKILY), IT WOULD NOT RESTART, WE HAD THE CAR TOWED. THE CODE READER INDICATED A PROBLEM WITH THE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM. IF YOU CLEAR THE CODES, OR DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, THE CAR WILL START. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. MY DAUGHTER HAS LEARNED HOW TO CLEAR CODES WITH A CODE READER, BUT THIS IS UNSAFE. THE DEALER SAYS THEY HAVE NOT HAD A RECALL ON THIS, BUT IT SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE THE OTHER IGNITION SWITCH PROBLEMS ON THE OTHER GM VEHICLES. THEY NEED TO BE RECALLED!! *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-08-07
  • VIN: 1G4CW54K614
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON 4 SEPARATE OCCASIONS AND WHILE TRAVELING AT SPEED AROUND 50-65 MILES PER HOUR MY CAR WOULD JUST SHUT OFF. I WOULD LOOSE POWER STEERING AND IT WOULD BE HARD TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS ON A MAJOR FREEWAY AND HAD TO PULL OVER AS CARS WOULD JUST DRIVE BY AT 60 MILES PER HOUR OR FASTER. I THINK IT IS RIDICULOUS THAT MY CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AND IF I OR MY FAMILY WOULD HAVE BEEN HURT OR KILLED I AM SURE GM WOULD ADD MORE CARS TO THE RECALL. WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO WAIT FOR A TRAGIC INCIDENT TO HAPPEN. I TOOK MY CAR TO A SHOP AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT IS WAS THE IGNITION ISSUE DUE TO THE PK3 SECURITY SYSTEM GM HAS ON THIS CAR. *TR

UPON EXAMINATION OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT THE ENTIRE INTAKE MANIFOLD HAD EXPLODED OFF OF THE ENGINE AND THERE WAS FIRE DAMAGE TO WIRING AND HOSES. NEITHER THE DEALER OR GM RESPONDED AT ALL TO A BBB COMPLAINT. CONTACTS WITH GM ITSELF WERE TOTALLY FRUITLESS WITH A PERCEIVED ATTITUDE OF "WHO CARES" ABOUT YOUR PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE WE MANUFACTURED, SINCE YOU PAID FOR IT IN FULL. Negative 2001 Buick Park avenue car reviews

  1. Thaddeus Hodkiewicz 2024-06-24

I had a difficult experience with my Buick. The brakes have been problematic since the time of purchase, and despite having had over 5 brake jobs, the issue has not been resolved. Additionally, I experienced a major backache after sitting in the driver's seat for just 20 minutes. When I contacted the factory representative, they were not very empathetic and even suggested that my body was built weird. I have had to deal with more maintenance problems, and my car has spent over 20 days in the shop in just 5 months. Unfortunately, I have had similar experiences with other Buicks in the past, so I have decided to look for a different brand. Thank you for your understanding.

  2. Vince Roberts 2024-02-24

I've had to make 14 trips to the repair shop. However, the dealership has been awesome throughout the process. On the other hand, I have had some issues with GM. Unfortunately, they have not been returning my calls. Eventually, they did provide an extended warranty at no cost, but I never received anything in writing to confirm it. Thankfully, the dealership was able to print off their computer records to show the warranty. So far, they have made repairs to the doors, transmission, heads up computer, trunk leak, and on-star programming. Additionally, they fixed the key release, lock/unlock buttons, and door panel that kept coming off. The engine has been racing and running rough during start-up, but hopefully, there won't be any more issues in the future!

Positive 2001 Buick Park avenue car reviews

  1. Odell Kuvalis 2024-11-26

Initially, I had trouble with the computer indicating that my 'door was ajar', which it wasn't. However, after that problem was corrected, I have had no problems with the car. It gives great mileage for a large car, with 31 mpg on a recent trip and an average overall of around 28 mpg. I have the grand touring feature, which provides excellent steering and cornering.

  2. Kennedi Luettgen 2024-11-21

I really enjoy the car for its spacious interior and trunk, as well as its smooth ride. While I do think the seats could use some improvement, there are plenty of adjustments available. I have owned two Buick Ultras in the past and unfortunately experienced transmission problems with both. However, the warranty covered the repairs and I appreciate that. I do believe that GM could benefit from putting more emphasis on quality parts. After comparing various options, I have found that the Buick offers unbeatable value for the price. Additionally, I am thrilled to mention that my current Buick has all of the latest features and I am thoroughly enjoying them.

  3. Alfonso Cummerata 2024-11-18

I've owned over 40 cars, and this Buick ranks near the top. I purchased it 6 months ago when it only had 20K miles, and now with 42K miles on the car, I'm still amazed that I get between 35 - 40 mpg on the highway. Although there have been a few minor issues with dash squeaks/rattles, overall it's been a great experience.

  4. Dewayne Crist 2024-10-02

I bought this car used with 20,000 miles on it from a rental place. It has been almost perfect. The only problem I had was an electronic door lock switch falling inside the door. However, as a rental, you can be sure it got rough use. Now, with 35k miles on it, I have never done anything but scheduled maintenance.

  5. Rolando McDermott 2024-07-25

The first time we drove the car out, even before finalizing the deal, the brake warning light came on as we drove home on a Saturday evening. We only went 2 miles from the dealer. After taking it back for repair, several weeks later another warning light came on, telling us that some other sensor was alerting us with the bells and light. We took it back to the dealer, but unfortunately, they did not have the part. However, they took one off of another new vehicle in order for us to be able to drive the Buick.
