Toyota Sequoia problems

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.
Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.
Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

Common Toyota Sequoia problems
The Toyota Sequoia, like any other vehicle, has its share of common problems that have been reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Premature Front Lower Ball Joint Wear: Some Sequoia models have been reported to have premature front lower ball joint wear, which can cause hard steering and even loss of vehicle control if the ball joint separates from the knuckle. Toyota has issued recalls for some Sequoia models to address this issue.
- Airbag Deflator Module Chemical Imbalance: Some Sequoia models have been reported to have issues with the airbag deflator module chemical imbalance, which can cause the airbags to deploy with too much pressure. This issue has been the subject of recalls and investigations by the NHTSA.
- Unprompted Activation of the Vehicle Stability Control System (VSC): Some Sequoia models have been reported to have issues with the VSC system, which can cause the brakes to engage suddenly and the vehicle to shake or jerk to the side. This issue has been the subject of recalls and investigations by the NHTSA.
- Frame Rust: Some Sequoia models have been reported to have issues with frame rust, which can weaken the vehicle's structure and potentially lead to accidents. Toyota has agreed to extend the rust perforation warranty and fix the undercarriage on some affected Sequoia vehicles for free.
- Transmission Problems: Some Sequoia models have been reported to have issues with the transmission, including transmission failure and issues with the torque converter. These issues can be expensive to repair and potentially lead to accidents.
- Faulty Oxygen Sensor: Some Sequoia models have been reported to have issues with the oxygen sensor, which can cause the check engine light to illuminate and potentially lead to issues with the vehicle's emissions system.
It is important to note that not all Sequoia models will experience these issues, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, it is important to be aware of these potential problems and address them promptly if they do occur. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these issues and ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

The Sequoia has been a reliable and comfortable vehicle for long trips. Although it did not meet my expectations of Toyota's high quality standards, I still appreciate its performance. I made the mistake of not looking at other SUVs before purchasing it. There were some quality issues that I encountered, such as the glass breakage sensor not working, the gear indicator lights burning out, and the rear window needing to be fixed twice. Additionally, the rear door handle broke during a ski trip, making it impossible to open the hatch. The OEM tires were also not up to par, causing the car to feel misaligned. Toyota initially denied these issues, but the dealer eventually admitted that others had experienced the same problems. The issues were resolved with a set of Duelers. Lastly, within the first year, the driver's window started sounding like it was going to fall out. Despite these issues, I still find the Sequoia to be a comfortable and reliable vehicle for long trips.

This vehicle is truly one of the best full-size three-row SUVs out there. It's a unique SUV that I've had the pleasure of driving all over the country, from the Midwest to the Pacific and back. It's always been comfortable, spacious, powerful, and reliable, making every trip a breeze. I've never had any major problems with it, and it has never let me down. As time goes on, my Sequoia will continue to rack up the miles, but I know it will remain the reliable workhorse that it is. This is something that can't be said for other SUVs like the Escalade or Navigator, which, while good SUVs, can be questionable in terms of reliability in the long run. I believe that the way I've maintained my Sequoia since 2008 is a big reason why it's still around today. I even use 87 octane (regular fuel) in it, and it runs like it's brand new. Just doing normal maintenance can keep your car running for a long time. In my opinion, this is the best three-row full-size SUV out there, and even with the SR5, it has held up strong and reliable.

I bought my Sequoia two months ago {9/2010} and it has exceeded my expectations. The acceleration is excellent, and it has great maneuverability for a 6,000 pound truck. The passenger room is also great, and the build quality is consistent with Toyota standards {we have owned GM, Lexus, Nissan, and Toyota}. Although the seats in a Chevy Tahoe LT we rented for vacation were more comfortable, I am still very pleased with my choice since the overall quality, acceleration, and long-term expected durability of the Sequoia are unmatched. When you're spending over 50k in this class, it's important to be confident in your decision.

Vehicle year: 2014
I test drove this car back in 2008 and absolutely loved it. Finally, in July of 2014, I decided to purchase one for myself. The steering is steady and solid, and the interior space is excellently utilized. Even the 3rd row seats can fit adults comfortably. The engine is powerful and the driving experience is truly enjoyable. The instrument panel design is great, both intuitive and functional. Simple fixes, such as changing light bulbs, can be done easily by yourself. The visibility from inside the car is good in all directions. I am not a car enthusiast, but I absolutely love driving this beast. I would highly recommend this car to anyone. The only thing I would change is to make adjustable suspension a standard feature. Otherwise, this car is simply amazing!

Congratulations on your first Sequoia after 12 years and 2 expeditions! I'm glad to hear that you are pleased with it so far. I completely agree with you that the platinum is overpriced when you compare the few extra options you get. Your limited with options of navigation and woodgrain interior on the dash sounds like a great choice. I understand that having the fold flat 3rd row is important, which excludes GM. It's great that you decided to spend a little more to get a better quality interior, as that was one of the few complaints you had with the expedition. I hope that you will have better resale value as well. The luxury feel of the interior and smooth ride sound amazing. It's good to know that you were able to find your LTD, even if it was in another state. LTDs can be hard to find or nonexistent in some areas. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

We have been loyal Toyota fans for many years and have purchased four new Toyota vehicles in the last decade. Historically, they have been very reliable. However, we did experience some issues with our $55,000 Sequoia Limited (4WD) that we purchased in 2010. Unfortunately, we have spent over $5,000.00 in repairs on the Sequoia between 2010-2015. The combo GPS/radio failed just out of the warranty period and we had to have it rebuilt. Additionally, the brakes on this vehicle have always had major problems, causing the rotors to hot-spot and/or warp, resulting in an alarming steering wheel shimmy. The alternator went out at just under 70,000 miles and we took it to Toyota for repairs. We were told that both the timing chain cover seal and pan seal were leaking and this is what caused the alternator to fail. The Toyota Dealer held us for ransom - indicating that they wouldn't warranty the new alternator unless we had the timing chain cover & pan seals replaced! Ultimately, (after the dealer had the vehicle for nearly 2 full weeks) the repair cost was > $4,100.00!!! We believe that Toyota should take pride in their vehicles and make good on the seal repairs since clearly there is some sort of problem with their vehicles leaking from multiple seals at less than 70,000 miles. Unfortunately, we were unable to get Toyota to return our calls. The service representative told us that the Sequoia was made in Texas and that they aren't nearly as reliable as Toyota's made in Japan. We have been loyal Toyota customers for many years and hope that Toyota will take our feedback into consideration. We bought our first new Toyota Longbed truck in 1984 for $5,800.00 and have always appreciated the quality of Toyota vehicles.

I leased the vehicle recently, but unfortunately experienced repeated failures with multiple safety sensors such as rear cross traffic, blind spot, active cruise control, and front collision radar. Despite this setback, I am confident that the dealer will work with Toyota to resolve the issue. While this experience has been disappointing, I remain optimistic about Toyota's reliability and look forward to a positive resolution.

We were excited to purchase a 2023 Sequoia for our growing family, but unfortunately, we've had some issues with it. At 10,000 miles, the hybrid system malfunctioned and the car broke down as we were leaving town for a 10-day road trip. Toyota provided a Corolla for our road trip and took the entire week to try and figure out what happened. Although it's now fixed, the car is unusually clunky when it switches from gas to hybrid engine. Additionally, the brakes squeal terribly every single time they are applied. Toyota has said they are aware of the issue but they do not have a fix, assuring us that the brakes are completely safe. We understand that this is a brand new car and it's disappointing to have these issues. We've asked Toyota to repurchase our car, but they've refused saying that the car and its parts are “performing as designed.” We wanted to share our experience as a warning to prospective buyers. We hope that Toyota will address these issues soon. Thank you for taking the time to read our story.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Sequoia. I've had it for a little over two years now and it's been great for my family of five. However, I have gone over my manufacturer's warranty by 15,000 miles and have already had to pay over $2,000.00 in repairs. Luckily, I purchased the extended warranty so I didn't have to pay out of pocket. But, I am a bit worried about the long-term costs of owning this vehicle. Despite this, I still really enjoy driving it. My most recent issue was with the fuel pump at 45,000 miles, which cost over $600.00 for the part alone at the dealership. That doesn't even include labor. Thanks for listening!
