2013 Toyota Sequoia problems

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.

Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.

Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.

As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

Common 2013 Toyota Sequoia problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2013 Toyota Sequoia, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Rust Issues: Many owners have complained about the SUV's susceptibility to rust and corrosion, particularly in the frame, leading to rapid rusting of the vehicle.
  2. Transmission Problems: Earlier models of the Sequoia have been known to experience transmission issues, which can be costly to repair, often requiring transmission system replacement or rebuilding.
  3. Faulty Oxygen Sensor: Reports indicate that models from 2001 to 2004 may have defective oxygen sensors, triggering the check engine light and causing frustration due to the various potential implications.

These issues highlight some of the challenges faced by owners of the 2013 Toyota Sequoia. Rust problems can compromise the structural integrity of the vehicle, while transmission issues can lead to significant repair costs. Additionally, a faulty oxygen sensor can affect the vehicle's performance and trigger warning lights, necessitating timely attention to prevent further complications.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • VIN: 5TDJY5G18DS
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: 2013 Toyota Sequoia Limited (108,000 miles) Rear lift gate around latch was not designed correctly to allow moisture out. Our vehicle is in pristine shape other than the rear lift gate latch. By the time you notice it, it’s too late and unfixable. I’ve seen these get so bad from doing internet research some people hold the door down with straps because the structural integrity is gone and the lift gate can’t be latched and could fly open. The ironic thing about this is it’s obvious Toyota has a problem. Toyota charges $750 - $1000 for a new unpainted lift gate, however NO dealer in the United states can tell you when you’ll receive it because it’s on a nationwide backorder. We purchased this from a Non-Toyota dealer September 2022 and did not (or even think I had to look for it) notice this until spring 2023.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-15
  • VIN: 5TDDW5G15DS

  • Summary: Due to a latent defect, Toyota's chrome lug nuts swell such that the lug wrench no longer fits the nuts. Owners confronted with flat tires are stranded on roadsides, potentially out of cell phone range, because they are unable to change the tire. I personally was stranded at midnight due to this defect. I alerted my Toyota dealership in Peoria, Illinois. They said they were aware of the issue on Sequoias and Sienas and that the could not keep enough lug nuts in stock. Toyota has provided no formal notice to owners of this latent defect and safety hazard. Both the Toyota dealership and Toyota care refused to provide without charge replacement lug nuts.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-02-20
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: FLEX FUEL MODELS OF THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 5.7 ENGINES HAVE AN ISSUE WHERE THE ENGINE'S COMPUTER THINKS THERE IS E85 FUEL (OR AN ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION THAT IS MUCH HIGHER THAN ACTUAL) IN THE SYSTEM WHEN THERE IS NORMAL 10% OR LESS GASOLINE ACTUALLY PRESENT. THIS CAN CAUSE ROUGH COLD STARTS/IDLE, POWER LOSS, SUDDEN RPM/POWER DROPOUT, MISSING, AND LESSENED FUEL ECONOMY, ETC. (DIFFERENT SYMPTOMS FOR DIFFERENT TRUCKS). MY SEQUOIA HAS NOW BEEN IN THE SHOP TWICE FOR THE SAME ISSUE RELATED TO THE ENGINE NEEDING RE-CALIBRATION AND THERE IS NO ASSURANCE IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN. ,MY SEQUOIA WILL NOT START, WHEN IT DOES IT RUNS VERY ROUGH AND SENDS OUT A BLUE CLOUD OF EXHAUST. JUST WENT IN AGAIN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN ON NOVEMBER 12,2014 - 9 MONTHS AFTER THE FIRST ISSUE. *TR

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-05-01
  • VIN: 5TDZY5G18DS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THERE IS A PROBLEM WITHIN THE SHIFT LOCK. MY CHILDREN WERE IN OUR NEW 2013 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WITHOUT THE KEYS IN THE CAR AND WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL, THEY MOVED THE SHIFT LEVER OUT OF PARK POSITION AND INTO NEUTRAL. THE CAR ROLLED INTO THE STREET AND WAS ALMOST HIT BY A PASSING CAR BEFORE MY 10 YEAR OLD PUSHED THE SHIFTER BACK INTO PARK, BRINGING THE CAR TO A LURCHING HALT. WITHOUT A KEY, OR A FOOT OR THE BREAK, OR PRESSING ANY BUTTON, THE TRANSMISSION WILL EITHER ENGAGE A DRIVE GEAR OR NEUTRAL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A BACKOVER OR ROLL-AWAY CRASH. TOYOTA OF PLANO SAYS THERE IS NO RECALL. FURTHER, THEY SAY IT IS NOT EVEN COVERED BY THE STANDARD WARRANTY OR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT I PURCHASED WITH THE VEHICLE. TOYOTA (CORPORATE) IS SAYING THE SAME THING, THAT IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM/ISSUE. *TR

Negative 2013 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

  1. Darrin Turcotte 2024-11-17

Taken as a whole, this is a great vehicle, and great looking too. However, it could benefit from a few more features (see below). Additionally, the dash panels could be improved as they are made of a cheaper plastic. Overall, though, it's a fantastic car!

  2. Kenneth Orn 2024-07-17

We recently purchased a 2011 Toyota Sequoia. Unfortunately, we have found that many of the most important functions of the navigation system, radio, media system, etc. are inaccessible while the car is in motion. We understand that this may be a safety feature, but it has made it difficult for us to use the car as we had hoped. We believe that it is important for car makers to prioritize both safety and usability. Despite this issue, we still appreciate the many great features of the car and hope that future models will address this concern.

  3. Arely Bahringer 2024-05-28

I have to admit, this purchase was a compromise for me. Although I wasn't initially sold on the new, larger interior, we decided to take a chance on this vehicle to accommodate our family and pets, especially considering our love for our 2003 Limited Sequoia. However, there are a few things that I would like to mention. Firstly, the size of the vehicle can make it difficult to park, despite the improved turning radius. Secondly, the interior finish is not up to par, with cheap plastic materials used throughout. Additionally, the seats are not very comfortable. Lastly, I miss the cargo space in my 2003 Sequoia, as the self-storing third row reduces the amount of available space. Overall, I still appreciate the features of this vehicle and hope to get used to its size soon.

  4. Armand Dicki 2024-01-08

Hey there! If you're considering buying a car, you might want to take a closer look at some other options. We had a Toyota and unfortunately, we had some issues with visibility and handling. We also found that the maintenance costs added up quickly. We had some trouble with alignment, which caused abnormal tire wear after a couple of rotations. Just wanted to share our experience with you. Let me know if you have any questions!

Positive 2013 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

  1. Tyson Rippin 2025-01-06

This is my second Toyota SUV and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed! We previously owned a 2000 Land Cruiser which was also amazing. After trading our Lexus GX470 for the Sequoia, we are back to Toyota and we couldn't be happier. The Sequoia is perfect for our family as it is spacious enough to accommodate kids and strollers. The towing capacity is also fantastic, which is a huge plus. It's amazing how you no longer have to buy an Escalade or something similar to tow 10,000 pounds. GM, watch out! Although I have a few complaints about the Sequoia, such as the lack of a front middle parking sensor and personalized settings for the front seats, it is still an overall great truck.

  2. Abel Berge 2025-01-01

Congratulations on the new additions to your family! I can understand how important it is to have a reliable and spacious vehicle that can accommodate everyone comfortably. After researching various options, it seems like the Toyota Sequoia would be a great fit for larger families like yours. The build quality is excellent and the space, comfort, and performance are top-notch. With room for 8 adults and plenty of cargo space, it's a great choice. I also appreciate the standard features like the power moonroof, rear seat digital climate control, and XM radio. Overall, I highly recommend the Toyota Sequoia for families in need of a spacious and reliable vehicle.

  3. Tatum Wisoky 2024-11-28

I recently traded in my 2011 Honda Pilot (yes, a 2011) for a slightly used 2010 Sequioa Platinum. I made this decision mostly for the towing capacity, but I also love the styling of the Sequioa. Although I love the overall SUV, there are a few cons to consider if you don't need the towing capacity. The seat layout is inconvenient with the Platinum captain seating in the back. The Nav/Audio system has an overly complex touchscreen interface. For example, to change stations to the next preset (without using the steering wheel controls), you have to switch to 'audio' mode. The handling is good for a 3 ton truck, but it can still be shaky at high speeds and subject to wind. If you're looking for a luxury tank, then this is the one for you!

  4. Lane Lynch 2024-11-17

I'm glad to hear that you owned a '04 Sequoia Limited and were interested in seeing what improvements they would make. It sounds like they have made some great changes! The interior has been brightened up and all switches are now well displayed at night. The third row seats have been simplified and can now lay flat with just the touch of a button. Additionally, getting out of the third row is now much easier with a release on the back of the second row. It's great to hear that the interior has been upgraded to be first class.

  5. Myron Goodwin 2024-11-05

Traded in a Nissan Armada that I loved for the new 2010 Sequoia. While I could have saved $4,000 with a rebate on the new Armada, after I test drove the new Toyota Sequoia I had to have it. It is simply the best large SUV on the market now. It handles almost like a car, rides great, and gets better EPA than my Armada. You should definitely consider buying it - you won't regret it!
