2014 Toyota Sequoia problems
The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.
Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.
Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

Common 2014 Toyota Sequoia problems
The Toyota Sequoia 2014 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:
- Power Window Master Switch Failure: Some second-generation Sequoias, including the 2009 model, have experienced issues with the driver's side power window master switch. Debris and moisture can enter, causing the switch to short-circuit and melt.
- Vehicle Stability Control System (VSC) Issues: Unprompted activation of the VSC system can cause the brakes to engage, shaking and jerking the vehicle to the side. Toyota recalled over 50,000 Sequoia SUVs to address this issue.
- Rust Issues: Many Sequoia owners have complained about the SUV's rusting problems, particularly its frame. The large metal frame is very susceptible to rust and corrosion, causing the SUV to rust out quickly.
- Transmission Problems: Earlier models of the Sequoia were reported to struggle with transmission issues, which can be expensive to fix, with repair costs potentially reaching $3,500.
- Faulty Oxygen Sensor: Many reports of the 2001-2004 Toyota Sequoia models' defective oxygen sensors have been made, causing the check engine light to illuminate.
These issues highlight the importance of regular maintenance and inspections for Toyota Sequoia owners to ensure the longevity and reliability of their vehicles.

- Summary: 1.THE WINDSCREEN CANNOT RESIST TINY PIECES OF STONE-LIKE DEBRIS OF ABOUT .001CM DIAMETERS THAT SOMETIMES FALL FROM BIGGER TRUCK AND TRAILER AHEAD OF YOU. I HAVE A PROBLEM OF THE DESCRIPTION ABOVE (MY WINDSCREEN HAS A TINY DEFORMATION AS A RESULT OF UNSUSPECTED CONTACT WITH SUCH ROAD HAZARDS) OF WHICH I CALLED TOYOTA AND FILED A COMPLAINT. I WAS TOLD TO TAKE MY CAR TO DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION, THEY CONCLUDED THAT THEY WILL NOT COVER IT BECAUSE IT'S EXTERNAL FACTOR. THIS CAR IN QUESTION IS LESS THAN 12,000 MILES WHEN IT OCCURRED. I HAVE OTHER CARS I HAVE DRIVEN FOR MORE THAN 10-13 YEAR UNDER SIMILAR CONDITION WITHOUT INCIDENT. 2.RECENTLY I NOTICED MY GPS AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM WAS FROZEN UP OR RESTART IN THE MIDDLE OF MY TRIPS. WHEN IT FROZEN I WOULD BE UNABLE TO ADJUST THE VOLUME OF THE RADIO OR TUNE OFF OR ON. THE GPS WILL RESTART AND RE-ROUTE ME TO UNDESIRED DESTINATION. THIS HAS BEEN FRUSTRATING FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. 3.THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR IS MALFUNCTION; EVEN IF MY TIRE PRESSURE IS AT A RECOMMENDED LEVEL IT WILL STILL DISPLAY THE NOTIFICATION.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-29
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5TDDW5G17ES
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: FRONT AND REAR PARKING ASSIST SONAR FAILED TO WORK. THE SONAR FAILED TO GO OFF BEFORE HITTING A 4 FOOT TALL PARKING POLE ON PASSENGER FRONT BUMPER. CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE FRONT BUMPER. TWO DAYS LATER A DIFFERENT DRIVER BACKED INTO A 5 FOOT TALL TRASH CAN ON BACK DRIVER BUMPER. AGAIN, THE SONAR DID NOT GO OFF. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SAID THEY KNEW IT WAS FRUSTRATING, BUT THEIR BEST ADVICE WAS JUST TO DRIVE IT LIKE WE DIDN'T HAVE SONAR. WE EXPLAINED WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE FOR IT'S SAFETY DEVICES. HAVING SMALL CHILDREN, SONAR WAS A BIG PART OF OUR PURCHASE DECISION. WE JUST HAD TO KEEP TAKING IT BACK OVER AND OVER. AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIP 8 TIMES TELLING THEM THE PARKING SONAR DOES NOT WORK, THE SENSORS FINALLY STOP WORKING AND WOULD NOT TURN ON. WE IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP SO THEY COULD SEE THE SONAR WHEN IT WAS MALFUNCTIONING. PRIOR TO THIS, IT WAS INCONSISTENT. THIS TIME, IT COMPLETELY STOPPED WORKING.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-03-03
- VIN: 5TDBW5G19ES
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: 2014 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR/5 I JUST LEASED THE ABOVE VEHICLE. IT IS THE THIRD TOYOTA PASSENGER VEHICLE THAT I HAVE OWNED AND/OR LEASED. THIS VEHICLE HAS A PROBLEM THAT POSES A SERIOUS THREAT TO LIFE AND LIMB OF THOSE WHO OPERATE IT AS WELL AS OTHERS ON THE HIGHWAY AND NEARBY. THE PROBLEM IS THAT INSTRUMENT PANEL IS SO BADLY LIGHTED IN THE DAYTIME THAT DURING BRIGHT DAYLIGHT HOURS WITH THE INSTRUMENTS BEING SHADED BY THEIR LOCATION WITHIN THE PANEL THEY CANNOT BE READ. THIS IS A TERRIBLE DISTRACTION TO THE DRIVER WHO IS TRYING TO CHECK INSTRUMENTS WHILE ALSO DRIVING THE VEHICLE. ONE REALLY NEEDS TO USE A FLASHLIGHT TO SEE SPEED, HOW MUCH FUEL IS IN THE AUTO AND TO CHECK ON OTHER FUNCTIONS SUCH AS OIL, ENGINE TEMPERATURE, RADIO TUNING AND OTHER ITEMS REFLECTED IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. SORT OF LIKE ?TEXTING? WHICH OCCUPIES AND DEMANDS ONE?S ATTENTION WHILE TRYING TO ?SEE? THE CONDITIONS REFLECTED BY THE INSTRUMENTS ON THE PANEL, RATHER THAN CONCENTRATING ON OTHER TRAFFIC, ROAD AND OTHER CONDITIONS. THIS IS THE THIRD TOYOTA I HAVE USED OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS AND THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN PRESENT IN EACH OF THE VEHICLES, THOUGH WITH THE ABOVE MODEL THE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE RATHER THAN BETTER. TOYOTA SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO "FIX" THIS PROBLEM BEFORE SOMEONE HAS BEEN INJURED OR KILLED?WHICH HAS PROBABLY ALREADY HAPPENED. *TR

Overall, great truck! Congratulations on your first Toyota. I'm glad to hear that the gas mileage exceeded your expectations, with 19.5 on the highway and 17 around town, even with the aggressive Firestone Destination AT tires. The ride is smooth and the room is amazing, not to mention the unparalleled storage space. It sounds like you got a great deal at the Toyota dealer in Auburn Mass, and I'm thrilled to hear that you're happy with it. Enjoy your off-road adventures with those Firestone Destination AT tires!

This car is amazing! As a mom of two boys who play basketball and travel for baseball, it's the first vehicle that can carry all of their equipment and still have room to spare. The luxury of the Platinum level will spoil you and your family, making small weekend trips to the baseball field and long vacation runs to the beach a breeze and more enjoyable for everyone!

You made an excellent choice with the Sequoia! It sounds like it was the perfect fit for your needs. It's great to hear that it provided a comfortable ride for all 8 adults and had plenty of storage space. Towing can be a hassle, but it's wonderful to hear that it was easy and sure with the Sequoia. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

When looking for a dealership, it's important to do your research. You may be surprised to find that some dealerships charge thousands more than they should. If a dealership claims to be charging only invoice and making only a small profit, be wary - this is often a tactic used to gain your trust. In my experience owning several 4Runners, a Tundra, and 2 Sequoias, I have found them to be incredibly reliable. I personally wouldn't recommend spending money on an extended warranty, as they can often be a rip-off and unnecessary. Unfortunately, when you bring your car in for service, it's common for mechanics to try and sell you on additional repairs. It's important to be aware of this and not let them pressure you into spending more money than you need to.

Ok - I started with a much longer review, but ran out of space. If you are looking for a car that will make you feel slightly cool and powerful and take you out of the 'mini-van world', then this may be the right vehicle for you. However, if you are like me and value aesthetics, performance, and amenities, you may be disappointed with this over-priced vehicle for the masses.

We recently purchased a 2011 Toyota Sequoia. Unfortunately, we have found that many of the most important functions of the navigation system, radio, media system, etc. are inaccessible while the car is in motion. We understand that this may be a safety feature, but it has made it difficult for us to use the car as we had hoped. We believe that it is important for car makers to prioritize both safety and usability. Despite this issue, we still appreciate the many great features of the car and hope that future models will address this concern.

We're sorry to hear about the issues you've had with the sonar sensors on your Sequoia. We understand how frustrating it can be to experience problems with your vehicle, especially when you've been a loyal Toyota customer for 17 years. We appreciate your honesty in sharing your experience with us. We want to assure you that we take all customer concerns seriously and strive to provide the best possible service. We're glad to hear that the dealership was eventually able to diagnose and fix the issue with the sensors. We understand that safety is a top priority for you and your family, and we want to make sure that your vehicle is equipped with the best possible safety features. We hope that you'll continue to enjoy your Sequoia and that you'll consider Toyota for your future vehicle needs. Thank you for your feedback and for choosing Toyota.Toyota's take? You should always abide by state driving laws if you don't feel safe, and you should never rely solely on your sensors. Thank you, Toyota! Although I could have paid less and not gotten sensors, I appreciate the added safety features. I have always been a loyal Toyota customer and I hope to continue driving their cars. However, I am disappointed with this experience and I hope Toyota can address this issue in the future.

I recently traded in my 2014 Toyota Sequoia with only 7000 miles for a 2014 Suburban. Although I know that trading it in one year was not a financially wise decision, I am much happier with the Suburban. The Sequoia is easy to handle and turns and parks like a much smaller car, but unfortunately, it has some downsides. The steering wheel hurts my shoulders on long drives, there are a lot of blind spots, there isn't much headroom, and the small size of the gas tank is a problem. Additionally, the Sequoia actually gets worse gas mileage than the Suburban. All in all, most of my complaints are about the comfort, and I believe that this car may work fine for a shorter driver but not for tall drivers.
