2009 Toyota Sequoia problems

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.

Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.

Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.

As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

Common 2009 Toyota Sequoia problems

The Toyota Sequoia 2009, like any other vehicle, has its share of common problems based on complaints from its owners. Here are some of the issues that have been reported:

  1. Power Steering System Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the power steering system, which can be caused by manufacturing flaws. These problems can lead to recalls, as was the case with the 2008-2022 Sequoia models.
  2. Seat Heating Mechanism Issues: There have been reports of the seat heating mechanism short-circuiting or damaging the seats, potentially causing injuries or even setting the car on fire. This issue has led to two active recalls related to this problem.
  3. Power Windows Issues: Toyota Sequoia owners have reported problems with the power windows, specifically with the sliding electrical contacts inside the doors not being lubricated properly, leading to short-circuits and melting of the power window master switch. This issue has also led to recalls for certain model years.
  4. Exterior Lighting Issues: Some owners have reported issues with the high-beam indicator turning on and off erratically, which seems to be caused by a defective headlight relay that needs to be replaced.
  5. Door Locks Issues: A 2011 Toyota Sequoia owner reported issues with the electric door latches breaking, which can cause problems with the door locks.
  6. Driver's Side Power Window Master Switch Failure: Some second-generation Toyota Sequoias have a driver's side power window master switch that can fail, allowing debris and moisture to get in and cause the switch to short circuit and melt. Toyota has addressed this issue by having its dealers either apply more lubricant to the switch or replace the switch circuit.
  7. Premature Front Lower Ball Joint Wear: The front lower ball joint in some first-generation Sequoia SUVs contains a design flaw that leads to premature ball joint wear. This issue can cause hard steering and even loss of vehicle control if the ball joint separates from the knuckle.
  8. Airbag Deflator Module Chemical Imbalance: In some first-gen Toyota Sequoia vehicles, the passenger front airbag inflator module doesn't have the right chemical balance and may create too much pressure that will cause the airbag to deploy improperly. Toyota has issued a recall to replace all affected Sequoia vehicles' modules.
  9. Unprompted Activation of the Vehicle Stability Control System (VSC): Sometimes the VSC in first-gen Sequoia SUVs will engage unprompted, causing the brakes to engage and the car to shake and jerk to the side.
  10. Frame Rust: The frame in first-gen Sequoia SUVs is not entirely rust-proof, which can cause severe rust on the frame and undercarriage. Toyota has agreed to extend the rust perforation warranty and fix the undercarriage on some affected Sequoia vehicles for free.
  11. Faulty Oxygen Sensor: Many reports of the 2001-2004 Toyota Sequoia models' defective oxygen sensors, which can cause the check engine light to illuminate.
  12. Transmission Problems: Earlier models of the Sequoia were reported to struggle with transmission issues, which can be pretty expensive to fix.

It is important to note that these issues do not affect all 2009 Toyota Sequoias, and some of these problems have been addressed through recalls or technical service bulletins (TSBs). When considering purchasing a used vehicle, it is always a good idea to research its history, including any recalls or TSBs, and have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-05-23
  • VIN: 5TDBT48A63S
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS RUST ON THE FRAME AND THE FRAME WAS ROTTED OUT FROM THE DRIVER SIDE TIRE AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. THE CONTACT NOTICED SPOTS WHERE HOLES MAY START TO DEVELOP THROUGHOUT THE FRAME. THE CONTACT CALLED TOYOTA OF KALAMAZOO (5850 STADIUM DR, KALAMAZOO, MI 49009, (269) 375-1000) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED BECAUSE THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN A RECALL. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-11
  • VIN: 5TDBT64A19S
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: FOR THE 2ND TIME IN 4 YEARS, THE AIR INTAKE PUMP/VALVES HAVE MALFUNCTIONED. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED IT WAS COVERED UNDER TOYOTA'S EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT COVERED THIS FOR 10 YEARS/150,000 MILES, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST. I JUST TURNED 156,000 MILES, AND TOYOTA DOESN'T WANT TO COVER IT- THEY ALSO SAID EVEN IF I WAS UNDER 150,000 MILES THEY WOULDN'T COVER IT BECAUSE THEY'LL ONLY COVER THE REPAIR ONE TIME (UNLESS IT FAILS AGAIN WITHIN 1YEAR OF THE REPAIR). THE REPAIR COSTS $2,000+- AND IS OBVIOUSLY NOT A PERMANENT FIX. THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW THAT ALTHOUGH RELATED TO EMISSIONS, CAN BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE REDUCES ITS POWER TO 50% ONCE THIS ERROR CODE IS TRIGGERED. CONSUMERS DESERVE A PERMANENT FIX OR WARRANTY FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE IF THIS DESIGN FLAW CAN'T BE CORRECTED, EITHER THAT OR A REPAIR COST THAT IS SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN $2,000. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN STARTING AND OPERATING- A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AS WELL AS OTHER LIGHTS.

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE FLOOR MAT BECOMING STUCK UNDER THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. UPDATED 01/27/16*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED ATTEMPTS TO UTILIZE THE BRAKE WERE MET WITH A HARD BRAKE THAT APPEARED FULLY ENGAGED INTO THE FLOOR BOARD. Negative 2009 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

  1. Albin Fahey 2024-08-15

In January 2008, we traded our 2002 Suburban for the Sequoia. As a family with three kids and three dogs, we were thrilled with the automatic third row and hatch. It's a dream to drive and park. Unfortunately, within six months, the A/C started to smell like mildew. Despite multiple visits to the dealership and calls to Toyota (we purchased the extended warranty), we were disappointed with the customer service. We experienced a constant clicking noise under the cage, the hatch didn't close properly, and the dealer couldn't solve any of the problems. Additionally, the navigational system cut off when driving, making it impossible for passengers to enter information. We found our TomTom to be better designed.

  2. Julien Kreiger 2024-01-11

The power option for folding the third row seats is great! If Toyota could apply that same option to the second row seats, it would be outstanding. As someone with a knee injury and three large dogs, adjusting the second row seats can be difficult. A power option would be a huge help in this situation. It's important to consider those with disabilities, even if we don't personally experience them.

Positive 2009 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

  1. Rashawn Jerde 2025-01-07

This is a great ride even on rough roads. The 4WD allows me to go anywhere with ease. It's perfect for travel and always reliable. I previously owned a Land Rover and the only thing I miss is the heated front windshield. Although the interior has more plastic than my 06, it's still a great SUV for the price. The seats in my 06 are more comfortable for a small person, especially on the passenger's side.

  2. Sage Wunsch 2025-01-02

We were considering a mini-van, but we wanted a larger 4wd vehicle. After looking at all the full-size SUVs, we decided to purchase the Sequoia through a broker with only 15,000 miles. It's an SR5, but it's loaded with almost every option available. Although the mileage is not great, if you can overlook that fact, you will absolutely love this SUV. It accelerates as well as, if not better than, my Mercedes E320. Even with 5 full-size guys and 5 bikes, my 6'3

  3. Martin Hammes 2024-11-17

Take your time and look at all locations. If you're planning to buy, consider going to a credit union as you will get a better deal on interest rates. Avoid financing through a dealership. If you're thinking of buying a vehicle, rent it first and do your homework. Go online and check it out. When at a dealership, make sure you know what the four boxes mean. Don't believe the salesman, as they are only looking for profit. By doing my homework, I saved over $6000 on my vehicle. I am grateful to Edmunds and carbuying.com for teaching me how to buy a vehicle. One more important thing, don't spend more than 40 minutes in a dealership. I remember one dealer had me there for more than 2 hours. They came up with a price on a plain piece of paper, showing the discount. I got up and walked out when I realized they were only interested in making a profit. The next day, I went to another dealership and was out of there within 40 minutes. I saved $6000 and drove off the lot with the vehicle paid in full. I even got free rugs and years worth of oil changes. The other dealership called me for three days, but I told them I had already made a deal. This was the best car buying experience of my life. I will never get burned or taken advantage of again. Sincerely, Larry.

  4. Kip Koch 2024-10-08

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you traded in your beloved Odyssey for an SUV that could accommodate your family of six and tow your 4,500lb boat. The Sequoia with 5.7L has plenty of power and even more torque. It accelerates better with the boat in tow than my 2002 Tundra V8 did without the boat. The ride is good for an SUV, but it's definitely not as smooth as a minivan. The ergonomics are pretty good, but the cups and controls are hard to reach, even with my long arms. I really like the high ride height and visibility. The middle and back rows easily fit passengers who are 6 feet or taller, with leg-room to spare. It averages 16-17mpg, which is good for a large SUV in town with this much power.

  5. Clair Swaniawski 2024-09-29

The new Sequoia has significantly less headroom and the seats cannot be adjusted down. The gas tank cover lock and side moulding strips have been dropped, which is a questionable decision. Additionally, the gas mileage is much less than advertised. Despite these drawbacks, the Sequoia is still a great truck that offers a comfortable ride. However, it may be worth considering whether to keep the old Sequoia. It is important to not get caught up in the hype and make an informed decision based on personal needs and preferences.
