The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.
Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.
Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

- Summary: While driving my 2001 Sequoia SR5 with only 74,750 miles on freeways at speeds between 55 and 65 mph, the SUV's braking system activates unexpectedly and without cause. The VSC check engine lighting and warning sound illuminate. My SUV veered to the right, the steering wheel vibrated, and it went into a skid when the brakes were abruptly engaged, causing it to skid. My SUV abruptly decelerated as if it had lost power. This situation was hazardous for other vehicles who could not tell if they were applying the brakes due to the absence of visible brake lights to prevent a collision. Fortunately, I responded defensively and avoided collisions with other vehicles and roadside obstacles. This issue is a safety concern; if it occurs at the wrong moment, a tragedy can be avoided. I've seen more than a hundred complaints from other proprietors and a completed NHTSA investigation. Sequoia models from 2001 and subsequent years were recalled for the same issue. Before a life is lost, Toyota must address this issue in all model years.

I turned the truck off and on, and all the lights cleared; however, the lights turn on again when the vehicle is cold. Once it warms up, and you turn the car on and off, the clear. No codes on the scanner. Forums say this happens regularly with this make, model and year, but no one is sure what it is. Everything from emissions, to the brake sensor to the yaw rate sensor.

- Summary: Frame Replacement needed: I took my 2001 Toyota Sequoia (45,515 miles; always garaged) in for an Emissions & Safety Inspection. I was notified the excessive rust on the frame has cause damage to the lines for the brakes/bubbling on the lines, fuel line, power steering fluid lines and, eventually, other undercar items may soon fail. It is recommended that due to the excessive rusting/premature frame rotting, the SUV should be decommissioned and off the road. Toyota dealership actually suggested that it might be necessary for me to sign a waiver in order to take the vehicle out of the dealership. The waiver was to hold Toyota harmless should something result as a result of the defect. I was shocked at the request/I declined. Stated the severe rusting is from the front to the rear of the frame. Research shows the Toyota Corporation is fully aware of the excessive rusting on the Toyota Sequoia SUVs however no remedy has been in place to resolve the issue for current owners. I am advised to replace the fuel lines (approximately $1700 for parts and labor), however, upon replacement the excessive rusting to the frame may damage the other lines in the vehicle and the frame will need to be replaced as well (about $10,000). The 2nd technician stated he has done work on 20+ year old SUVs a lot, none with anywhere near this type of premature rusted frame. Stated he couldn't believe how bad it is. Said it flakes apart when you touch it anywhere. He stressed that I should not have my octogenarian mom, and 1st grader in the vehicle. This is our family vehicle. The 2001 Sequoia SUV was built on a tundra frame which had a structural recall (NHTSA action number: pe09049) for frames built in 2000 and 2001. The Sequoia was left out of this recall; a 2012 Spray Option was offered for the frame (I was told by "Israel" today / Brand Ambassador Department). I never received the notification. No dupport from Toyota. The frame, fuel lines need replacement. Pls help!

- Summary: Recently I took the vehicle in to investigate a clunking noise. I was informed by the shop that the frame had completely rusted through, causing the rear stabilizer arm to become detached. I also had a front stabilizer link fail twice in a year, presumably from the frame excessively flexing. Upon further investigation, I came to learn that Toyota is quite aware of this very issue, they’ve issued recalls where insufficient measures may have been taken to temporarily stop the rusting, and that many many other Sequoia owners have the same exact problems that I’m having, and Toyota refuses to take responsibility for this premature failure and provide some sort of relief. Given the frequency and number of complaints, I’m kind of shocked that NHTSA hasn’t banned these vehicles from the roadways. Seems like a serious accident waiting to happen. It’s not like the facts are in question in this case. There must be hundreds or thousands of examples. If you do a web search for “2001-2004 toyota sequoia rust corrosion on frame” you’ll find a bunch of examples, as well as accounts of Toyota’s numerous refusals to stand behind their mistakes. I still have the vehicle, and would gladly help you with any investigation. I did have part of the frame welded just so I could limp it back home to WI. I towed it on a trailer. It runs great, and is in very good condition, which is why this is all such a shame.

When you first buy this SUV, you might think it's too big, but after a short amount of time, you'll love its size, comfort, power, and ride. The Sequoia is a safe SUV to drive and is easy to maneuver in traffic. Its pick-up is great, too. I highly recommend buying another Sequoia.

I love this SUV! It was ahead of its time in 2001. The ride is so smooth and the comfort is unmatched. The leather seats are very comfortable and I love the DVD system. I'm a sucker for accessories and this one is loaded out! The only problem I've had, or the previous owner had, was that the back latch and window motor had to be replaced. Overall, I'm very satisfied!

Hello! I am writing this review after 9 years of ownership. I just wanted to share my experience with our Toyota Sequoia. It has been nothing less than the perfect big SUV for our active family. We have taken it to many lakes, deserts, mountains, and favorite off-road camping spots, as well as on long summer trips. It has hit the 100,000 miles without a single mechanical problem or incident. We are so impressed with its performance! This vehicle is a pleasure to drive on and off road, and the comfort level is only surpassed by the Land Cruiser, which we also own. However, our Sequoia is king for hauling our gear, bikes, and all the equipment we take on family outings. We tow our boat about three times a week over hilly terrain and our Sequoia does it with no effort at all. It is simply the best SUV! Thank you for reading my review.

Hi there! I was in search of a vehicle that could tow a 2 horse trailer on a budget of $10K. Luckily, I found a used Sequoia with 89K miles in Oct. 2008. The dealer had done such a great job detailing it that it was hard to tell it wasn't a new car. Although it had 90K miles on it, I checked it over and bought it. I immediately changed all the fluids and made sure all maintenance was up to date. This motor needed a new timing belt at 90K, which I got done, and I also changed the plugs (which might have been the originals). The gas mileage computer showed the previous owner got 14 mpg, but I'm happy to report that I'm getting 18 overall! It's been 1 1/2 years since I bought it and I haven't had any issues with it at 110K miles. It pulls the trailer great and has a lot of room. Overall, it's been a great used vehicle for me!

It's great to hear that you're interested in this SUV! It's a reliable vehicle that's also fun to drive. The iForce 4.7 V8 engine really roars when you push it, and it's perfect for off-road adventures. Plus, it's not a high-maintenance car, so it can last you for years. I've even added 20-inch Falken rims to mine, and it performs like a monster on grass and dirt!

To begin with, I would like to acknowledge that I have owned 4 Toyota vehicles in the past, all of which have been perfect. However, I have had some issues with my Sequoia that have been quite frustrating. Firstly, I have had to replace the brakes and rotors twice. Secondly, while on vacation in Florida, the transmission made a clunking sound and eventually died out on the freeway, requiring a replacement at only 20,000 miles. Lastly, at 30,000 miles, the engine light came on and I needed a new catalytic converter. Despite these issues, I still have faith in Toyota's quality and hope to have a better experience in the future.

I really value quality and reliability above all else, including price, features, and comfort. After doing my research and considering my own experiences, I was convinced that Toyota was the best choice for me. That's why I decided to purchase my third Toyota, the Sequoia, with high expectations for a long-lasting vehicle. However, after 100,000 miles and five years of dealer-only scheduled maintenance, I have to say that I'm very disappointed. Here's a list of the issues I've had, in reverse chronological order: transmission failure at 100,000 miles, brakes replaced five times (even with a total system replacement at 60,000 miles), fuel gauge failure at 80,000 miles, dashboard ignition key receiver failure at 70,000 miles, dashboard drive gear LED out at 70,000 miles, and oversensitive traction control that grinds at 50,000 miles. Unfortunately, my experience did not meet my expectations of Toyota's quality.

This vehicle was a great purchase, and has served us well with an average of 11,000 miles per year. Although we did experience an issue with the air conditioner last summer, which cost $2500 to repair, there was unfortunately no recall, only a service bulletin. Despite this setback, we received no help from the dealership. Additionally, after 52,000 miles, the suspension is now wearing out, which will cost $500 to fix. As a daily driver truck used by my wife, it is important to note that maintenance costs should be factored in when considering the initial cost of the vehicle. However, I still believe in the quality of Toyota and would recommend purchasing an extended warranty for added peace of mind.

The car has some issues that need to be addressed. The rattling noise is quite noticeable and the fold-up seats do take away from the cargo capacity. Unfortunately, the JBL radio and speakers are not functioning properly, which is quite disappointing. Despite repeated trips to the dealer, the service manager was not able to fix the issue. Additionally, the interior fit and finish are average, and there is already a wear-hole on the side of the leather seat. The car also hesitates on acceleration after a sharp turn. Overall, I am very disappointed with the quality and service provided by Toyota. I hope they take steps to improve their products and customer service. Lastly, I was charged $40 for a rental car, which was an unexpected expense. I hope Toyota takes responsibility for their shortcomings and makes things right for their customers.

I bought a first model year Sequoia brand new. It handles great in snow, thanks to its high road clearance and 4-wheel drive, which can get you through any weather condition except icing. The front and second row seats are comfortable for adults, while the third row seats are more suitable for kids. Although I have had some issues with reliability, I still think Toyota makes great vehicles, especially considering the price point of just under 50K. Unfortunately, I did experience some problems with the brake and throttle computers, which took a while for Toyota to repair. Additionally, my 4-wheel drive recently stopped working, and I have had to spend about $3,500 a year for the last two years on repairs. However, despite these issues, I still find the Sequoia to be a great car. While the interior creature comforts could be improved, overall it's a solid choice.
