The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.

Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

- Summary: While driving on a highway at about 60 mph, my vehicle made a loud grinding noise while the steering felt very difficult to control and then the VSC TRAC and TRAC OFF lights both came on. I got off the highway and pulled over to a parking lot to inspect the vehicle, but I did not see anything that would cause the vehicle to do that. After a few minutes, I restarted the vehicle and while driving on local roads to get home, the same thing happened again. I was extremely worried for the safety of my wife and children in the vehicle. After reading a few Toyota owners threads online, this seems to be a very familiar pattern with these Toyota Sequoias, and I strongly believe that this will result in very serious injuries or possible deaths if Toyota does not issue a recall to fix the problem causing such dangers for drivers. - Summary: Rack and pinion rusted out and had to be replaced. It cracked in the middle of the highway and left me inching to safety. Never fully recovered 186k, frame is fully rusted and will not pass inspection due to faulty oxygen sensors and excessive rust and corrosion. Will need to replace exhaust to input a new sensor at 4k Vechicle is fully operable and functional but cannot pass inspection without the safety of rust treatment or replacement It’s a great vechicle but unfortunate that the 2002 series is left out of the recall . There are a lot of early generations that have these issues and although the trucks are reliable and have a long life , are undriveable because they can’t pass inspection. Please consider extended the rust recall to 2001-2003 Sequoias. This was my grandfathers truck and really would like to keep his memory in the family and drive my grandfathers truck as it still runs perfectly but has on going issues with rust and frame issues . There was an extended warranty for 2002 Sequoias that expired in 2014. This is a point where most Sequioas weren’t experiencing this issue. Dealership or recall will not honor and denied any claim for rust It is unfortunate because I am now disabled and love my Sequoia so much and was hoping to drive to appointments and gain my health back. It has become more than I am able to afford to fix an entire frame of the vehicle. It’s evident that early generations all that his issue but has not been honored for repair. I’ve repaired things over the years with hopes to pass inspection and now have insight as to what the real issue is. The excessive rust and damage to the frame.

- Summary: The left rear frame broke away from rear sway bar. I was just leaving my house when I heard a thunk. I noticed the problem when I turned onto the faster road as I accelerated the whole backend moved right, pushing the front end left (into oncoming traffic). Letting up on the accelerator cased the reverse to happen, the back end swung left and the front turned right. So, glad it happened slower streets and not the highway. There was a limited service recall on this model to coat with a rust proofing paint and we had the service done in 2012. This failure would have probably killed someone if it had happened on the freeway or cloverleaf. These vehicles should be either repaired by Toyota or off the road.

These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. Lexus' numbers for this recall are JLI, JLJ, and JLK.

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, or replace the air bag assembly that includes an alternate inflator, free of charge. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag. The recall began on July 13, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-762-2737. Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our 2002 Sequoia Limited that we bought from a previous owner in December 2018. It had 99,000 miles on it at the time. I have to say, this car is a beast! It handles even better than our previous 2004 4Runner and rides like a dream - almost like a Camry. The only downside is the mileage, which isn't great, but that's to be expected with a V8 engine. On the bright side, we hardly even notice when we're pulling our trailer thanks to the power of the V8. Overall, we're really happy with our purchase and would definitely recommend this car to others.

This is a must buy for a family. It's very quiet, reliable, and comfortable. You won't even feel it when it's moving.

If you're in the market for a big SUV, this is the one for you! We've looked at all the others (and you know who they are), but none of them compare to this car. The quality is excellent throughout, and it has better passenger room than any of the domestic models. While we haven't tested its towing capabilities with anything larger than an ATV or lawnmower, we're confident you won't be disappointed. We would definitely buy it again!

I have previously driven Toyota Land Cruisers, but when it came time to purchase a new vehicle, I opted for the more affordable Sequoia instead of paying $65,000 for the new Land Cruiser. I was pleasantly surprised with the Sequoia's better performance and fuel efficiency. While some people may complain about minor issues with the vehicle, I believe that these are just small details. Overall, the Sequoia is an excellent SUV and I highly recommend it. And don't forget to consider purchasing one soon, just in case there are any changes to regulations in the future.

Your Sequoia sounds wonderful! You made a great purchase in April 2006 when it had 36,000 miles on it. Since then, you have only had to pay for oil changes and tire rotations every other oil change. With 83k miles, you have only had to purchase a battery and will be purchasing tires this winter for the first time. Gas can be expensive when driving a V8, but you cannot purchase a more reliable SUV. The Sequoia rolls smoothly on the freeway and is very classy and stylish. It is perfect for a family of five, providing comfortable rides. When purchasing an SUV, it is important to do your research, and with the Sequoia, you will be satisfied.

It's great for long drives and very comfortable. Although, I was surprised by the quality of the interior trim pieces as they kept falling off. Unfortunately, I had to do a $2200 front brake job due to poor quality in original materials. I've owned several Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans and this SUV didn't quite meet my expectations. The gas mileage and power were also not up to par. However, I appreciate the smoothness of the original engine. Thank you Toyota!

The lift gate window motor malfunctioned shortly after the warranty expired. Additionally, I have had to replace all the interior door handles, which have broken off at a cost of $100 each. The vehicle has also experienced constant brake problems, with an average cost of $500 for each repair, which is required about once a year. In total, I have spent approximately $4000 on repairs due to the poor build quality of the vehicle.

The Sequoia is unfortunately not a vehicle I can recommend with confidence. Despite having less than 10,000 miles of easy driving, our own Sequoia has been in the shop three times now for a broken AC. While there is a technical service bulletin on the AC problems, indicating that it is a known issue, the service department has been unable to identify the root cause of the problem. This has been a true disappointment, especially given the price point and Toyota's reputation for quality. Unfortunately, it seems that our experience is not unique, as another person we know with a Sequoia has had the same issues. It appears that this may be a fairly widespread problem that Toyota needs to address.

I had a negative experience with my Toyota truck. The 4WD broke the first time I used 4WLow in deep snow, and the dealer accused me of abuse. However, I was able to get it resolved by going to another dealer who took mercy on me. The Toyota help center was not helpful, and it took two months to resolve and repair. Additionally, I have experienced issues with the brakes and windshield. Overall, I learned a lesson and would recommend considering American full-sized SUVs instead.
