2002 Toyota Sequoia problems

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.

Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.

Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.

As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

Common 2002 Toyota Sequoia problems

The Toyota Sequoia, a full-size SUV introduced in 2001, has been a popular choice among Toyota fans. However, like any other vehicle, the Sequoia has its share of problems. This article will focus on the common problems reported by owners of the 2002 Toyota Sequoia.

  • Transmission Failure: Transmission issues have been reported in earlier models of the Sequoia, and the 2002 model is no exception. Transmission problems can be quite expensive to fix, with repair costs potentially reaching as high as $3,500 due to the need for replacement or rebuilding of the transmission system.
  • Cracked Manifold Gasket: Another common problem in the 2002 Toyota Sequoia is a cracked manifold gasket. This issue can lead to engine failure and even death at as early as 100,000 miles.
  • Faulty Oxygen Sensor: Many 2002 Toyota Sequoia owners have reported problems with the oxygen sensor. A faulty oxygen sensor can cause the check engine light to illuminate, which can be frustrating since it can indicate various issues.
  • Rust Issues: The 2002 Toyota Sequoia has been reported to have rusting problems, particularly in the SUV's large metal frame. The frame's susceptibility to rust and corrosion can cause the vehicle to rust out relatively quickly.
  • Rear Wiper Stop: Some 2002 Toyota Sequoia owners have reported issues with the rear windshield wiper, which may not stop when it is supposed to.
  • Dome Lamp Flickers or Stays On: Another problem reported by 2002 Toyota Sequoia owners is the dome lamp flickering or staying on, which can be a nuisance and potentially a safety hazard.
  • Tick Noise from Lower A-Pillar Area Over Rough Road Surfaces: Some owners have reported a ticking noise from the lower A-pillar area when driving over rough road surfaces, which can be distracting and annoying.
  • Vehicle Pulling to One Side: Some 2002 Toyota Sequoia owners have reported that their vehicle pulls to one side, which can be a safety issue and affect the driving experience.
  • Unintended Power Rear Window Activation: Another problem reported by 2002 Toyota Sequoia owners is the unintended activation of the power rear window, which can be a safety hazard and potentially lead to accidents.

In conclusion, the 2002 Toyota Sequoia has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of. These issues include transmission failure, erratic VSC traction control system, cracked manifold gasket, faulty oxygen sensor, rust issues, rear wiper stop, dome lamp flickers or stays on, tick noise from lower A-pillar area over rough road surfaces, vehicle pulling to one side, and unintended power rear window activation. While the Sequoia is generally a reliable full-size SUV, these problems can affect its durability and longevity. Therefore, potential buyers should carefully consider these issues before purchasing a 2002 Toyota Sequoia.

WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-17
  • VIN: 5TDZT34A02S
  • Components: WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My vehicle has randomly been flashing vbs/abs/traction control lights. Sometimes nothing happens other than the flashing lights. Other times I’ll be driving & when going around a curve my car makes a beeping noise (sounds like the abs noise activated) & I’ll feel a pulsing under the brake & hear a grinding sound. It doesn’t allow me to brake effectively. Another time I was coming to a stop behind a car at a red light. It was clear as day, roads weren’t wet & I couldn’t have been going over 10 mph. When hitting my brakes, my steering wheel kind of glided back & forth for a sec and it felt like my tires “floated”in the same motion as wheel until it stopped.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-13
  • VIN: 5TDBT44A02S
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Component/System Failed: The frame of my 2002 Toyota Sequoia has severely rusted, resulting in a gaping hole. It is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: The rusted frame jeopardizes my safety and renders the vehicle unsafe for use. Confirmation: A mechanic has confirmed the rust issue. Manufacturer Inspection: Toyota has not inspected my Sequoia’s frame. Warning Signs: There were no warning lamps or messages related to frame rust prior to the failure; it became evident during my recent inspection. The gaping hole in my Sequoia’s frame is not due to normal wear and tear but rather Toyota’s poor manufacturing practices. Shockingly, Toyota issued a “limited service campaign” for similar rust issues in other vehicles, but I was never informed. This lack of transparency is unacceptable. It is clear that Toyota’s decision to implement a limited service campaign, rather than a comprehensive recall, reflects a blatant disregard for the safety and satisfaction of its customers. By prioritizing cost-cutting measures over ethical responsibility, Toyota has failed to uphold its duty to consumers and the people who sustain its business. Toyota’s actions have revealed a disturbing trend of prioritizing profits over people. The company’s failure to adequately address known issues with rusted frames speaks volumes about its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. Despite numerous complaints and documented cases of frame rust, Toyota’s response has been inadequate. I urge Toyota to take immediate action. Inspect and replace my Sequoia’s frame promptly. Prioritize consumers over profits. Restore my faith in the brand that I once trusted.

While driving on a curved road, the vehicle made a grinding sound with flashing VSC off and Trac off lights, as it pulled violently to the right and almost ran off the road with my two children in the back seat. I do understand that many first generation Sequoia owners have reported similar incidents and that there were no recalls, however, I think this is a serious enough issue that will cost innocent people their lives. I was able to pull a reading from the OBD2 and it says there is a fault with the Yaw Rate Sensor. Please help before this causes someone's death. STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-14
  • VIN: 5TDZT34A52S
  • Components: STEERING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While driving on a highway at about 60 mph, my vehicle made a loud grinding noise while the steering felt very difficult to control and then the VSC TRAC and TRAC OFF lights both came on. I got off the highway and pulled over to a parking lot to inspect the vehicle, but I did not see anything that would cause the vehicle to do that. After a few minutes, I restarted the vehicle and while driving on local roads to get home, the same thing happened again. I was extremely worried for the safety of my wife and children in the vehicle. After reading a few Toyota owners threads online, this seems to be a very familiar pattern with these Toyota Sequoias, and I strongly believe that this will result in very serious injuries or possible deaths if Toyota does not issue a recall to fix the problem causing such dangers for drivers. Please investigate the matter to save lives. Thank you!

STEERING,SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-19
  • VIN: 5TDBT44A82s
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Rack and pinion rusted out and had to be replaced. It cracked in the middle of the highway and left me inching to safety. Never fully recovered 186k, frame is fully rusted and will not pass inspection due to faulty oxygen sensors and excessive rust and corrosion. Will need to replace exhaust to input a new sensor at 4k Vechicle is fully operable and functional but cannot pass inspection without the safety of rust treatment or replacement It’s a great vechicle but unfortunate that the 2002 series is left out of the recall . There are a lot of early generations that have these issues and although the trucks are reliable and have a long life , are undriveable because they can’t pass inspection. Please consider extended the rust recall to 2001-2003 Sequoias. This was my grandfathers truck and really would like to keep his memory in the family and drive my grandfathers truck as it still runs perfectly but has on going issues with rust and frame issues . There was an extended warranty for 2002 Sequoias that expired in 2014. This is a point where most Sequioas weren’t experiencing this issue. Dealership or recall will not honor and denied any claim for rust It is unfortunate because I am now disabled and love my Sequoia so much and was hoping to drive to appointments and gain my health back. It has become more than I am able to afford to fix an entire frame of the vehicle. It’s evident that early generations all that his issue but has not been honored for repair. I’ve repaired things over the years with hopes to pass inspection and now have insight as to what the real issue is. The excessive rust and damage to the frame.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
  • VIN: 5TDBT48A22S
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The left rear frame broke away from rear sway bar. I was just leaving my house when I heard a thunk. I noticed the problem when I turned onto the faster road as I accelerated the whole backend moved right, pushing the front end left (into oncoming traffic). Letting up on the accelerator cased the reverse to happen, the back end swung left and the front turned right. So, glad it happened slower streets and not the highway. There was a limited service recall on this model to coat with a rust proofing paint and we had the service done in 2012. This failure would have probably killed someone if it had happened on the freeway or cloverleaf. These vehicles should be either repaired by Toyota or off the road.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2010-2016 4Runner, 2003-2006 Tundra, 2003-2013 Corolla, 2009-2010 Corolla Matrix, 2004-2005 RAV4, 2002-2007 Sequoia, 2011-2013 Sienna, 2008-2012 Scion xB, 2008-2009 Lexus IS-F, 2007-2012 Yaris and Lexus ES350, 2010-2017 Lexus GX460, 2002-2010 Lexus SC430, 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2015 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles. These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. Lexus' numbers for this recall are JLI, JLJ, and JLK.
2018-12-12
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2002-2005 Lexus SC and Toyota Sequoia, 2003-2005 Toyota Corolla and Tundra, and 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, or replace the air bag assembly that includes an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began January 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371, Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. 2015-05-13
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag. The recall began on July 13, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-762-2737. NOTE: This recall supersedes recall 14V-312 in its entirety.

Negative 2002 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

  1. Adrian Bosco 2025-01-07

I purchased the SUV with 69,000 miles, as my wife had been urging me to get one. Despite the initial issue with the rear window motor, I had confidence in my decision due to the high ratings on Edmunds and the fact that it was a Toyota. However, I was disappointed when the transmission failed at 82,000 miles while my wife was driving. While this experience was frustrating, I remain confident in my ability to make informed purchasing decisions in the future.

It's great for long drives and very comfortable. Although, I was surprised by the quality of the interior trim pieces as they kept falling off. Unfortunately, I had to do a $2200 front brake job due to poor quality in original materials. I've owned several Toyotas, Hondas and Nissans and this SUV didn't quite meet my expectations. The gas mileage and power were also not up to par. However, I appreciate the smoothness of the original engine. Thank you Toyota!

  3. Gabriel Runolfsdottir 2024-11-03

The lift gate window motor malfunctioned shortly after the warranty expired. Additionally, I have had to replace all the interior door handles, which have broken off at a cost of $100 each. The vehicle has also experienced constant brake problems, with an average cost of $500 for each repair, which is required about once a year. In total, I have spent approximately $4000 on repairs due to the poor build quality of the vehicle.

The Sequoia is unfortunately not a vehicle I can recommend with confidence. Despite having less than 10,000 miles of easy driving, our own Sequoia has been in the shop three times now for a broken AC. While there is a technical service bulletin on the AC problems, indicating that it is a known issue, the service department has been unable to identify the root cause of the problem. This has been a true disappointment, especially given the price point and Toyota's reputation for quality. Unfortunately, it seems that our experience is not unique, as another person we know with a Sequoia has had the same issues. It appears that this may be a fairly widespread problem that Toyota needs to address.

  5. Tyrell Yost 2024-09-04

I had a negative experience with my Toyota truck. The 4WD broke the first time I used 4WLow in deep snow, and the dealer accused me of abuse. However, I was able to get it resolved by going to another dealer who took mercy on me. The Toyota help center was not helpful, and it took two months to resolve and repair. Additionally, I have experienced issues with the brakes and windshield. Overall, I learned a lesson and would recommend considering American full-sized SUVs instead.

Positive 2002 Toyota Sequoia car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with our 2002 Sequoia Limited that we bought from a previous owner in December 2018. It had 99,000 miles on it at the time. I have to say, this car is a beast! It handles even better than our previous 2004 4Runner and rides like a dream - almost like a Camry. The only downside is the mileage, which isn't great, but that's to be expected with a V8 engine. On the bright side, we hardly even notice when we're pulling our trailer thanks to the power of the V8. Overall, we're really happy with our purchase and would definitely recommend this car to others.

  2. Delbert Harvey 2024-10-13

This is a must buy for a family. It's very quiet, reliable, and comfortable. You won't even feel it when it's moving.

  3. Sidney Veum 2024-10-07

If you're in the market for a big SUV, this is the one for you! We've looked at all the others (and you know who they are), but none of them compare to this car. The quality is excellent throughout, and it has better passenger room than any of the domestic models. While we haven't tested its towing capabilities with anything larger than an ATV or lawnmower, we're confident you won't be disappointed. We would definitely buy it again!

  4. Lyric Haag 2024-10-06

I have previously driven Toyota Land Cruisers, but when it came time to purchase a new vehicle, I opted for the more affordable Sequoia instead of paying $65,000 for the new Land Cruiser. I was pleasantly surprised with the Sequoia's better performance and fuel efficiency. While some people may complain about minor issues with the vehicle, I believe that these are just small details. Overall, the Sequoia is an excellent SUV and I highly recommend it. And don't forget to consider purchasing one soon, just in case there are any changes to regulations in the future.

  5. Akeem Watsica 2024-08-21

Your Sequoia sounds wonderful! You made a great purchase in April 2006 when it had 36,000 miles on it. Since then, you have only had to pay for oil changes and tire rotations every other oil change. With 83k miles, you have only had to purchase a battery and will be purchasing tires this winter for the first time. Gas can be expensive when driving a V8, but you cannot purchase a more reliable SUV. The Sequoia rolls smoothly on the freeway and is very classy and stylish. It is perfect for a family of five, providing comfortable rides. When purchasing an SUV, it is important to do your research, and with the Sequoia, you will be satisfied.
