Toyota Sequoia 2017 problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.

Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.

Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.

As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

Common Toyota Sequoia 2017 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Toyota Sequoia 2017, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  • Premature Front Lower Ball Joint Wear:
    • The front lower ball joint in certain 2017 Toyota Sequoia SUVs has been reported to experience premature wear. This can result in hard steering and even loss of vehicle control if the ball joint separates from the knuckle. Toyota issued a recall in early 2007 to address this issue.
  • Airbag Deflator Module Chemical Imbalance:
    • In some 2017 Toyota Sequoia vehicles, there have been reports of a chemical imbalance in the passenger front airbag inflator module. This imbalance can lead to excessive pressure during airbag deployment. Toyota initiated a recall to replace the affected modules.
  • Unprompted Activation of the Vehicle Stability Control System (VSC):
    • Owners of 2017 Toyota Sequoia SUVs have encountered issues with the VSC system activating without prompt. This can cause the brakes to engage unexpectedly, leading to the car shaking and jerking to the side. In 2010, Toyota recalled over 50,000 Sequoia SUVs to address this problem.
  • Frame Rust:
    • The frame of some 2017 Toyota Sequoia SUVs is susceptible to rust and corrosion, particularly in the undercarriage. Moisture can penetrate the frame, causing severe rust issues. Toyota extended the rust perforation warranty and offered free repairs for affected vehicles.
  • Transmission Problems:
    • Earlier models of the Toyota Sequoia were known to experience transmission issues. These problems can be costly to repair, with potential costs reaching up to $3,500 for transmission replacement or rebuilding.
  • Faulty Oxygen Sensor:
    • Reports have surfaced regarding defective oxygen sensors in 2017 Toyota Sequoia models. This issue can trigger the check engine light, indicating potential sensor malfunctions and requiring diagnostic attention.

These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the Toyota Sequoia 2017 have faced. Addressing these concerns promptly and through proper maintenance can help ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.

  • VIN: 5TDYY5G11HS

  • Summary: ON JULY 12, 2017, I HAD BACKED UP MY 2017 TOYOTA SEQUOIA TO A FAMILY MEMBER'S HOUSE AND THEN PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK, BUT LEFT IT RUNNING. MY THREE CHILDREN REMAINED INSIDE THE VEHICLE, SEATED AND BUCKLED. I EXITED THE VEHICLE TO WALK TO THE BACK AND PUT A BOX IN THE BACK AND WHEN I TURNED AROUND, THE VEHICLE HAD SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND WAS SPEEDING AWAY. THE VEHICLE STRUCK A SMALL SECTION OF TREES ON THE RIGHT SIDE, WHICH POPPED THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR OPEN. THE VEHICLE THEN CONTINUED ON UNTIL IT RAN THROUGH TWO FENCES AND INTO THE WOODS BEHIND THE NEIGHBOR'S HOUSE, WHERE IT STRUCK OTHER TREES AND CAME TO A STOP. UPON CATCHING UP WITH THE VEHICLE, THE ENGINE SOUNDED AS THOUGH IT WAS STILL REVVING AND WAS DIGGING RUTS INTO THE GROUND. I OPENED THE DRIVER'S DOOR AND FOUND THE GEAR SHIFT JUST SLIGHTLY OUT OF PARK, WHICH IS NOT WHERE I LEFT IT. I HAD TO FORCEFULLY PUT IT BACK INTO PARK BY HITTING IT AND THEN TURNED THE KEY OFF. THE MOTOR WOUND DOWN WITH A HIGH PITCHED WHINING NOISE. I THEN UNBUCKLED ALL THREE OF MY CHILDREN (AGES 11, 9, AND 5) AND GOT THEM OUT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED IN THE FRONT END AND PASSENGER SIDE BUT NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THERE HAD BEEN TWO OTHER INSTANCES OF TROUBLE WITH THIS VEHICLE PREVIOUSLY THAT TOYOTA HAD STATED THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THE FIRST WAS APPROX 2 WEEKS AFTER PURCHASE WHERE IT WOULD LOSE POWER WHILE DRIVING AND THEN SUDDENLY GET IT BACK AND SURGE. THE SECOND OCCURRED IN MARCH 2018 AND THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY DECELERATE WHILE ON CRUISE CONTROL, EVEN WHEN THERE WERE NO VEHICLES IN FRONT, AND THEN SUDDENLY REACCELERATE. NEITHER TIME TOYOTA COULD PINPOINT A CAUSE OR FIX FOR EITHER BUT THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY WORKED AFTER THEY CHECKED IT OUT. THE EDR REPORT COLLECTED BY TOYOTA CONTAINED A LARGE AMOUNT OF INCORRECT DATA, SUCH AS THE VEHICLE ROLLING OVER WHEN IT DID NOT AND OTHER INFO.

We're sorry to hear about the issues you've had with the sonar sensors on your Sequoia. We understand how frustrating it can be to experience problems with your vehicle, especially when you've been a loyal Toyota customer for 17 years. We appreciate your honesty in sharing your experience with us. We want to assure you that we take all customer concerns seriously and strive to provide the best possible service. We're glad to hear that the dealership was eventually able to diagnose and fix the issue with the sensors. We understand that safety is a top priority for you and your family, and we want to make sure that your vehicle is equipped with the best possible safety features. We hope that you'll continue to enjoy your Sequoia and that you'll consider Toyota for your future vehicle needs. Thank you for your feedback and for choosing Toyota.Toyota's take? You should always abide by state driving laws if you don't feel safe, and you should never rely solely on your sensors. Thank you, Toyota! Although I could have paid less and not gotten sensors, I appreciate the added safety features. I have always been a loyal Toyota customer and I hope to continue driving their cars. However, I am disappointed with this experience and I hope Toyota can address this issue in the future.

Firstly, it's worth noting that the Toyota model doesn't offer a choice of engines, unlike the Ford Eco Boost and BMW x5 turbo charged engines which are known for their fuel efficiency. However, I have found that my Toyota gets around 10-12 MPG, which is not as efficient as some other models. In terms of safety technology, some Toyotas may not come with features such as Blind Spot monitor, collision avoidance, and GPS systems that are easily visible. However, I opted for the Platinum Series which includes all the safety features I was looking for, as well as AC seats. It's important to note that the Platinum Series does not offer a second row bench, making it a 7 passenger vehicle instead of the advertised 8. While the lease program for Toyotas may be more expensive than some other brands, I have found that the safety features and overall quality of the vehicle make it worth the investment. The Navigation system may not be to everyone's liking, as it is located 6 inches to the right of center and can be difficult to read in bright sunlight. However, I have found that the touch pad and back up camera are useful features, and I have adapted to the location of the Navigation system over time. While the voice controls may not be perfect, I have found that with a bit of patience they can be useful. Overall, I have enjoyed my Toyota and appreciate the safety features and quality of the vehicle.

I recently traded in my 2014 Toyota Sequoia with only 7000 miles for a 2014 Suburban. Although I know that trading it in one year was not a financially wise decision, I am much happier with the Suburban. The Sequoia is easy to handle and turns and parks like a much smaller car, but unfortunately, it has some downsides. The steering wheel hurts my shoulders on long drives, there are a lot of blind spots, there isn't much headroom, and the small size of the gas tank is a problem. Additionally, the Sequoia actually gets worse gas mileage than the Suburban. All in all, most of my complaints are about the comfort, and I believe that this car may work fine for a shorter driver but not for tall drivers.

  4. Nick Welch 2024-08-01

The third row can be a bit of a tight fit, and unfortunately there isn't much space left in the back even for a cooler. Additionally, it's worth noting that the Camry and other vehicles in this price range tend to include more standard safety features than this one does, and there isn't even an option to add them on. Lastly, the running boards are quite narrow - more like toe boards.

  5. Jamal Gorczany 2024-06-17

I really wanted to love this vehicle because of its spaciousness and comfortable, plush seats. Unfortunately, we've experienced some issues with vibrations while driving on the highway, even after trying everything we know to fix it. The controls are also a bit far away, which adds to the discomfort. Despite our love for Toyota, we have decided to part ways with this car after only a year. Thank you for understanding.

Positive Toyota Sequoia 2017 car reviews

  1. Rey Mayer 2024-04-23

Air ride is really nice and easy to access!

  2. Brando Kuhic 2024-04-17

There is nothing to dislike about the Sequoia. The turn radius is so tight and smooth, and the gas mileage for a big SUV is excellent.

  3. Keshaun Kunde 2024-03-17

I have a 2011 Chrysler 300 and I absolutely love my adaptive (radar-based) cruise control. It was a must-have when getting my wife's new SUV. However, I have noticed that the laser version in this Toyota can be a bit finicky. It sometimes refuses to engage, drops out randomly (especially when driving into the sun), or continues to drive almost right into the back of the car ahead regardless of follow distance. In contrast, the adaptive cruise control in my Chrysler just works and works great! Additionally, I find the infotainment system in the Sequoia a bit difficult to navigate. I also dislike that the side detection is just a silent light in your mirror. In my Chrysler, when I turn on the blinker, it audibly beeps at me if it detects something. Overall, the Sequoia is a decent car, but I do find myself getting annoyed with some of its features, especially considering its higher cost compared to my 5-year-old Chrysler.

  4. Marcos Becker 2024-02-09

You made an excellent choice with the Sequoia! It sounds like it was the perfect fit for your needs. It's great to hear that it provided a comfortable ride for all 8 adults and had plenty of storage space. Towing can be a hassle, but it's wonderful to hear that it was easy and sure with the Sequoia. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
