The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.
Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.
Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

- Summary: The rear door latch for the lift gate malfunctioned and wouldn’t release. The power motor for the lift gate continued to work, trying to lift the rear gate. The result was bending the left gate hinge and hinge mounting area. The gate latch was corroded, but is supposed to be protected from the elements! The lift gate had to be taken apart from the inside with a number of parts having to be damaged/destroyed to open it as there was no other way to release the rear door latch (no manual release). The dealer didn’t have the rear door latch in initially in stock when I needed it because they’ve never replaced one for corrosion until now. The damage occurred after I left the dealership, but before I could get the part ordered and scheduled back in the dealership. Toyota has provided $400 of “goodwill” for what turned out to be a $1,400 repair for an item that shouldn’t ever need to be replaced!

APPARENTLY IN PRODUCTION THEY USE A SILICONE WHERE THIS ATTACHES TO THE HEAD AND IN MANY CASES THEY DID NOT GET ENOUGH SILICONE. RESEARCH HAS SHOWN ME THAT MANY, MANY OF THESE HAVE THIS ISSUE AND THAT WHEN THE VEHICLE IS FAIRLY NEW THAT TOYOTA WILL STAND BEHIND IT IN LIMITED CASES. MY VEHICLE HAS 150,000 MILES ON IT SO THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO STAND BEHIND IT AND CLAIMED TO NOT BE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. I HAVE CONTACTED SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS AND ALL OF THEM STATED THEY WERE WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE AS MINE HAS STARTED TO LEAK, IT DOES SO ON TO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND HAS A STRONG BURNING SMELL EACH TIME I DRIVE EVEN IF ONLY A SHORT DISTANCE. AFTER A BRIEF PANIC OF YELLING AND SCREAMING AS MY 6 YR OLDS WAS HEAD GETTING SMASHED THE 2YR OLD LET GO OF THE SWITCH AND THEN THE DRIVERS SWITCH COULD BE OPERATED TO LOWER THE WINDOW. - Summary: I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2012 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. SINCE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE HAS HAD IDLE/ACCELERATOR PROBLEMS, ERRATIC PROBLEMS WITH EXCESSIVE TRANSMISSION DOWNSHIFTING, RACING, SURGING, AND FLUCTUATION OF ENGINE RPM'S, MAKING THE VEHICLE DIFFICULT TO STOP SAFELY. WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT EXPLAINED TO ME THAT IT WAS A NEW VEHICLE AND IT NEEDED TIME,??ONE THOUSAND MILES,?? FOR THE ENGINE TO BREAK IN. THEIR INITIAL SOLUTION TO MY VEHICLE'??S PROBLEM DID NOT RECTIFY ITSELF. I HAVE HAD TO RETURN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP 2 TIMES FOR REPAIR. THEY STATED THAT THEY HAVE CONFIRMED MY CONCERNS WITH THE VEHICLE BUT IT COULD NOT BE REPAIRED. THAT IT IS A DESIGN CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE, THAT'S THE WAY THEY ACT, AND THAT IT HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH FUEL-CUTTING OR TRANSMISSION SHIFTING. HE FURTHER STATED THAT HE FORWARDS HIS REPORT TO TOYOTA ENGINEERS AND IF THERE ARE ENOUGH COMPLAINTS THAT THEY WILL RE-WRITE AND UPDATE THE SOFTWARE FOR THE VEHICLE. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2012 Toyota Sequoia.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain JTEKT power steering gear assembly service parts for 2007-2021 Tundra and 2008-2022 Sequoia, part numbers 44250-0C160, 44250-0C131, 44250-0C170, and 11250-0C121. The power steering gear assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in an oil leak.
- Consequence: An oil leak may cause a sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the power steering gear assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 17, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 21TH01.

- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2008-2022 Sequoia and 2007-2021 Tundra vehicles. The power steering gear assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can result in an oil leak.
- Consequence: An oil leak may cause a sudden loss of power steering assist, increasing the risk of a crash.

- Summary: Southeast Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 and 2010-2013 Toyota Tundra, 2010-2012 Rav4, 2012 Toyota Sequoia, 2010-2011 Toyota Corolla, 2010-2011 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, 2010-2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser, 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2010-2013 Toyota Venza, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, 2010-2013 Toyota Tacoma, 2011-2012 Toyota Sienna, 2012 Toyota Prius, 2013 Scion FR-S, 2011 Scion XD, 2011 Scion XB, and 2012 Scion TC vehicles. These vehicles were sold with labels that were outside the allowable one percent of accuracy of actual weight added. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
- Consequence: An inaccurate label could lead to owners overloading their vehicles and tires. An overloaded vehicle can result in a tire failure which may result in a vehicle crash, personal injury, or property damage.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners and provide a corrected label with instructions concerning its installation. A small group of the affected vehicles will need additonal remedies which are still being developed. The recall began on May 28, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
- Summary: Southeast Toyota Distributors, LLC (SET) is recalling certain models interspersed through model years 2009 through 2013 as follows: model year 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and RAV4; model year 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser, and Highlander Hybrid; model year 2010-2013 model year Corolla, Sienna and Tundra; model year 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza; model year 2012 Prius V; and model year 2010-2012 Sequoia. During modification by SET to include accessories such as leather seat covers, seat heaters or headrest DVD systems, these vehicles may not have had the passenger seat occupant sensing system calibration tested. Without passing the calibration test, the occupant sensing system may not operate as designed.
- Consequence: If the front passenger seat occupant sensing system is out of calibration, the front passenger airbags may not deploy or they may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This could increase the risk of personal injury during the event of a vehicle crash necessitating airbag deployment.
- Remedy: Southeast Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will test the sensitivity of the occupant detection sensors, and recalibrate them as necessary. The recall began on March 21, 2013. Owners may contact Southeast Toyota at 1-800-301-6859.

This car is amazing! It comfortably fits my wife, two kids, and all of our family vacation gear. The driving experience is fantastic, with plenty of power and room. Although the mpg could be better, we still managed to get 17 mpg on the highway and 15 in town. We don't tow anything, but it feels like we could with all the horsepower and great ride. However, I do have one issue - the navigation system. Toyota should be ashamed of it. I previously owned an Acura with a navigation system and expected them to be similar, but I was wrong. It's frustrating, counter-intuitive, and far from user-friendly. In short, I highly recommend the Sequoia, but I suggest skipping the navigation system. You won't regret it!

This is a great SUV! Our main goal was to have a towing capability of 7000lbs while still having an interior (eliminating the need for a truck). All SUVs in this category have great front seats and comparable 2nd rows, but the 3rd row in this one was the best by far. Gas mileage can be all over the map around town, but with a little effort, you can achieve 16-17 mpg. Keep in mind that there is a substantial push after getting off the gas, so speed is key to achieving better mileage with a vehicle of this size. It's worth noting that for 2011, getting in and out of 4WD occurs below 45mph, which was resolved in later models.

My 2010 Toyota Sequoia has a smooth, quiet ride, plenty of power, and great handling. As a satisfied customer on my third Toyota, I can confidently say that this vehicle is top-notch. However, the factory JBL navigation system leaves much to be desired. It locks out essential features when the vehicle is in motion, making it difficult to use. To ensure the best navigation experience, I recommend purchasing an aftermarket NAV and backup camera.

After researching various options, it seems like the Toyota Sequoia would be a great fit for larger families like yours. The build quality is excellent and the space, comfort, and performance are top-notch. With room for 8 adults and plenty of cargo space, it's a great choice. I also appreciate the standard features like the power moonroof, rear seat digital climate control, and XM radio. Overall, I highly recommend the Toyota Sequoia for families in need of a spacious and reliable vehicle.

We also found that the maintenance costs added up over time. We had some trouble with alignment, which caused abnormal tire wear after a couple of rotations. I have to admit, this purchase was a compromise for me. Although I wasn't initially sold on the new, larger interior, we decided to take a chance on this vehicle to accommodate our family and pets, especially considering our love for our 2003 Limited Sequoia. However, there are a few things that I would like to address. Firstly, the size of the vehicle can make it difficult to park, despite the improved turning radius. Secondly, the interior finish is not up to par, with cheap plastic materials used throughout and uncomfortable seats. Lastly, I miss the cargo space in my 2003 Sequoia, as the self-storing third row reduces the amount of available space. Overall, I believe that this vehicle has its pros and cons, and it may not be the perfect fit for everyone.

Taken as a whole, this is a great vehicle, and great looking too. However, it could benefit from a few more features (see below). Additionally, the dash panels could be improved as they are made of a cheaper plastic. Overall, it's a fantastic car!

We recently purchased a 2011 Toyota Sequoia. Unfortunately, we have found that many of the most important functions of the navigation system, radio, media system, etc. are inaccessible while the car is in motion. We understand that this may be a safety feature, but it has made it difficult for us to use the car as we had hoped. We believe that it is important for car makers to prioritize both safety and usability. Despite this issue, we still appreciate the many great features of the car and hope that future models will address this concern.
