2016 Toyota Sequoia problems
The Toyota Sequoia is a full-size SUV manufactured by Toyota mainly for the North American market since 2000 for the 2001 model year, being derived from the Tundra pickup truck. It is the second largest SUV ever produced under the Toyota brand, after the Japan-exclusive, military-focused Mega Cruiser.
Previously manufactured at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana in Princeton, Indiana between 2000 and 2021, and then in Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, Texas since 2022, the Sequoia is the first vehicle from a Japanese marque in the popular mainstream full-sized SUV class in North America, and initial planning done by first-generation Sequoia chief engineer Kaoru Hosokawa aimed the Sequoia directly at the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and other full-size SUVs.
Up until the 2021 model year, the Sequoia was slotted between the mid-size 4Runner and the premium Land Cruiser in the North American Toyota SUV lineup. With the discontinuation of North American sales of the Land Cruiser from the 2022 model year onward, the Sequoia became the flagship SUV in Toyota's North America lineup.
As of 2021, the Sequoia is sold in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It is offered in left-hand drive only.

This car is fantastic! It's easy to drive, comfortable, and reliable in any type of weather. I absolutely love it.
-
Love my Sequoia! It was such a great purchase. I bought it used with 60k miles and it had everything I needed and more. It pulls my Rockwood trailer like a dream, I barely even notice it's there.

I have a 2011 Chrysler 300 and I absolutely love my adaptive (radar-based) cruise control. It was a must-have when getting my wife's new SUV. However, the laser version in this Toyota frequently refuses to engage, drops out randomly (especially when driving into the sun), or simply continues to drive almost right into the back of the car ahead regardless of follow distance. It's nothing like the 'it just works and works great' of my Chrysler. Additionally, I find the infotainment logic difficult to navigate, and I dislike that the side detection is just a silent light in your mirror. On my Chrysler, when I turn on the blinker, it audibly beeps at me if it detects something. For the most part, the Sequoia is okay, but I'm just constantly annoyed with how much worse it is on some things, especially considering it cost nearly double a 5-year older car...
-
There is nothing to dislike about the Sequoia. The turn radius is so tight and smooth, and the gas mileage for a big SUV is excellent.

When looking for a dealership, it's important to do your research. You may be surprised to find that some dealerships charge thousands more than they should. If a dealership claims to be charging only invoice and making only a small profit, be wary - this is often a tactic used to gain your trust. In my experience owning several 4Runners, a Tundra, and 2 Sequoias, I have found them to be incredibly reliable. I personally wouldn't recommend spending money on an extended warranty, as they can often be a rip-off and unnecessary. Unfortunately, when you bring your car in for service, it's common for mechanics to try and sell you on additional services. It's important to be aware of this and only agree to necessary repairs. Don't let them pressure you into spending more than you need to.

Firstly, it's worth noting that the Toyota model doesn't offer a choice of engines, unlike the Ford Eco Boost and BMW x5 turbo charged engines which are known for their fuel efficiency. However, I have found that my Toyota's gas mileage is not as good as I would like, and I find myself having to stop at gas stations more frequently. In terms of safety technology, I have noticed that some models of the same year offer more advanced features such as Blind Spot Monitors, Collision Avoidance and GPS systems that are more user-friendly. I opted for the Platinum Series to get all the safety features and AC seats, but unfortunately, this meant losing a second row of seats. It's also worth noting that there is no option for a second-row bench, and the Platinum is now a 7 passenger vehicle, not 8 as advertised. The lease program for Toyotas can be quite expensive compared to other brands such as Lexus or Mercedes, which offer similar vehicles for $400 less per month. While the Navigation system is not the best, it is still functional, although it is located 6 inches to the right of center, closer to the passenger than the driver. The print can be quite small, and the touchpad can be difficult to use while driving, especially with the Florida sun glare. However, I have found that the voice controls can be useful, although it may take a few tries to get it to understand. Overall, while there are some drawbacks to the Toyota model, I am looking forward to exploring other options in the future.

The extra foot between the bumpers, compared to the 4-runner, was too much for me. Although the interior was largely a step down from previous year's, the v-8 had a lot of power and delivered great acceleration. However, road noise was high.

Ok - I started with a much longer review, but ran out of space. If you are looking for a car that will make you feel slightly cool and powerful and take you out of the 'mini-van world', then this may be the right vehicle for you. However, if you are like me and value aesthetics, performance, and amenities, you may be disappointed with this over-priced vehicle for the masses.

I recently traded in my 2014 Toyota Sequoia with only 7000 miles for a 2014 Suburban. Although I know that trading it in one year was not a financially wise decision, I am much happier with the Suburban. The Sequoia is easy to handle and turns and parks like a much smaller car, but unfortunately, it hurts my shoulders on long drives, has a lot of blind spots, doesn't offer much headroom, and has a small gas tank. Additionally, the Sequoia gets worse gas mileage than the Suburban. Overall, most of my complaints are about the comfort, and this car may work fine for a shorter driver but not for tall drivers.

We're glad to hear that the dealership was eventually able to diagnose and fix the issue with the sensors. We understand that safety is a top priority for you and your family, and we want to make sure that your vehicle is equipped with the best possible safety features. We hope that you'll continue to enjoy your Sequoia and that you'll consider Toyota for your future vehicle needs. Thank you for your feedback and for choosing Toyota.Toyota's take? You should always abide by state driving laws if you don't feel safe, and you should never rely solely on your sensors. Thank you, Toyota! Although I could have paid less and not gotten sensors, I appreciate the added safety features. I have always been a loyal Toyota customer and I hope to continue driving their cars. However, I am disappointed with this experience and I hope Toyota can address this issue in the future.
